The Grand Aston Varadero offers a polarizing stay, with its prime location garnering both acclaim and criticism, especially regarding beach quality and noise levels. Service quality fluctuates, combining commendable staff interactions with instances of sluggish service and communication hurdles. While many guests consider the hotel to provide good value, some feel their expectations are not met. The vibrant atmosphere, marked by dynamic entertainment, is occasionally marred by inconsistency. Room opinions are divided, highlighting modernity and upkeep issues alike. Amenities generally receive praise, though not without notes on occasional service delays. Cleanliness levels are similarly varied, with some guests satisfied and others disappointed.

This is a beautiful new resort with what seems to be discounted opening prices.

The beach is picturesque with huge winds and waves but should not be compared to Varadero beaches on the other side of the channel. It is not that type of beach (smooth powdery sand and calm ocean) but is style very sttractive.

The rooms are modern and in new condition.

The food is plentiful by Cuban standards (Eggs every day) but little variety.

Booking for the a la Cartes was easy if you don't follow the crowd who lines up at 7:30 am. Go any time after that.

No problem getting a pool chair or beach chair if you go down at a reasonable time (9 am). Cabanas are very few and are all gone by the night before. if you are trying to snag 3 or 4 chairs in a row well then adjust your time accordingly.

The animation staff were very energetic and engaging.

The front desk staff could not communicate in English so they avoided eye contact and simply checked your ID and handed out room keys. No explanation of how to get to the room, how to connect to Wifi, where the buffet and restaurants were, hours etc. They did not want to talk to you at all.

The porter was there right away to take you bags to your room but if you declined, he vanished without answering any questions you had.

Bar service and drink quality were average to poor. They seemed like assembly line workers not engaging bar staff. The frozen drink machines were just used as mixers, no slush or ice.

Our room had no toilet paper for the first two days.

Towels and linens were never changed in 7 days.

Rooms were swept/mopped with a towel but never vacuumed. Under the beds looked like it was never touched since the opening of the hotel in Dec.

They ran out of coffee for 4 days and counting.

They ran out of beer for one day and counting.

The only elevator on block one was out of order for two days.

WiFi was very spotty if it worked at all. No guarantee you could connect with the same device in the same location at any given time.

Ocean View rooms on the 1st or 2nd floor were not worth the extra charge as you just saw the roof of the building.

You always get what you pay for so be aware of the short comings that accompany a low price.

Cuba Cuba And Cuba
If you want a luxurious holiday with all the the goodie’s pay double and go somewhere else. This is Cuba at a bad time in history so do your research and make a choice. This resort is trying to do the best they can with what they have available to them. And they do a good job. The food was acceptable and we always got fed. We went to town on a short bus ride away and food was cheap and flavourful. We had ocean views that were beautiful day and night. The staff were mostly friendly and working on there English for our convenience not there’s. We really should try to learn more Spanish if we plan to truly enjoy the Caribbean. I would like to acknowledge one staff member in particular. His name is “Yayo” and he is a leader in the entertainment group. He is well spoken in many languages and is very helpful when we inquired about activities on site and around the town. He kept us entertained and even got me up dancing in a
Competition That as the finalist of our group I took home the prize of a great bottle of Cuban Ron. And I’m still recovering lol. Go Jose go lol. For those of you that were there the first week of February I was John the dancing fool from Ontario Canada that got the whole place on there feet dancing and laughing at the lobby party. In closing we were happy with the room cleaning, enough elevators and stairs to get where you needed, beach bar made the best piña coladas, bring a yeti with you for your convenience and to cut down on cups in the garbage. Beach was ok but you were only a $5 all day bus ride away from “Varadero”with the best beaches in the Caribbean. We will definitely be back maybe not to the Aston but we will come back to visit the staff that we had a close connection with. Cheers to all

Very nice, new hotel. After taking a tour through Varadero it was clear this is in the newest area and is in a lot better shape than many of the other hotels. The beach area has a bit of rock and seaweed but they must have dug out big sections as even the next door resort is way worse! The rooms were clean, shower pressure and hot water always. The buffets, restaurants, lobby, bars, pool area all feel clean and brand new. The staff were great, very hard working, work long hours and provide great service but it was clear on many occasions they are understaffed. Longer wait times for food at al a cartes, tables stayed dirty at buffets and at peak times it could be hard to find a clean table, long lines for the grilles and omletes etc, and long wait times for drinks at almost all bars most of the time. That being said some good tips early and often would have the staff helping you out faster when they could. Buffet food wasn't horrible but wasn't amazing, you could usually find enough to get a dinner going. Not a lot of fresh vegetables or fruit options but this was our first time in Cuba and during a nationwide food shortage so may not just be Grand Aston. Al A Carte restaurants took a bit to book and you have to be up at 9am to get in line for up to 30 minutes. But we were able to book 3/3 times. The Al A carte food was delicious and a huge step up in quality to the buffet. The sports bar has great drinks and had NFL football, NBA etc on TV (no NHL on that we saw). Nightly shows were pretty good, seen better but seen worse at other resorts. No actual stage area apart from between the two pools outside so in rain there would be no show. They mixed in some violin, guitar, pianos and singing in the lobby bar, all of which were great! Pools were very big and our first few days it was very easy to get a chair at almost any time of the day, plus they have several day beds. As it got busier and if at full capacity they may run out of pool chairs. Overall probably 4 out 5 experience and I think this would improve if the food shortage situation improves.

This hotel was the worst. Service is utterly none existing, no towel , no toilet paper not water in suits, beds got fresh linens only once in 7 days, we did exactly as they said yet we didn't get bed sheets replaced and blood stained , even our rooms were not cleaned for day and we had to keep complaining for anything to get done. We met a family of 6 that left resort to another resort to try to salvage their vacation at an added expense of 4k dollars. Management did not care , air canada rep at hotel did not care.
Sorry but it seems that these positive reviews are fake, not what we experienced at all.

This was brand new hotel with low price and high customer rating on their website.
The hotel design is nice.
The rooms are spacious and beautiful but:
- They did not have flat sheets under comforter which is the basic of the hygiene (I do not believe that they wash comforters every time the guests are changed). They had them in ocean view rooms but that luxury was not available for standard room.
- In 10 days they replaced bottom sheets (on the mattress) once and we had to wait 3 days because they did not have them.
- In bathroom we had only bath towels for 4 days, smaller – hand towels we got after 4 days.
Food was not so bad as in other Cuban hotels last year. It was good enough, but you had to wait in long line if you wanted barbecued meet. We had eggs only 4 out of 10 days and the line was to long that we did not even try to get them
There was no white wine (only one day we got it). Selection of other drinks was good but mojito was hard to get.
To book a la carte restaurant you had to wait in line for more that 1 hour every day and food was terrible. Not worth of time lost to book. They are below any expectations.
There were only I think 28 palapad at the beach and around 80 beds. That was not enough for the hotel with 500+ rooms. We had to get to the beach before 7:00 am to reserve our place in the shade.
The beach is around 2 km long but it is impossible to walk on it.
The sand is soft and you can not walk on it. It is not comparable to Varadero beach.
To enter and get out of the water was hard because of rocks in the water and sand dunes.
To summarize, we would not go there even for lower price.

We had a great time! Would Highly recommend for a calm resort.

The Food: Omelets or fried eggs every morning with fresh eggs. Chicken breast cutlets for lunch. Pork Chops and assorted beef cuts for dinner. There was always options for food and all of it was tasty. We found the food seasoned good enough. The snack bar always had a few options never the whole menu but once you caught onto that and tried the options they were good. Buffets were mostly the same every meal but there was no shortage. A La Carte- Italian restaurant is a must! Best meal we had. The Cuban restaurant was okay. We only got two A la Carts for our 6 night stay but hear the Japanese restaurant has lobster and it was great.

The rooms were clean and beds were comfortable. We always had fresh towels and had our bedding changed when we put the tent card on the bed.

The pools are a good temperature and were clean. If you need an umbrella just ask the guys in the grey shirts and they will hook you up.

The beach was good. Its not the white sand like other parts of Cuba but it is walkable and there are plenty of chairs and umbrella huts down there. It gets pretty breezy down there but it was very enjoyable.

The entertainment staff work hard to get you to join in Stretching, Dancing, Pool Exercises, sand court volleyball during the day. The lobby offers a different type of live music in the lobby every night and at 930pm there is a show out by the pool. After the show ends at 10:30 there is dancing till 11 up on the stage then you can go to the lobby bar, sports bar, snack bar or your room for the night. It is very quiet after 11pm. No disco club but you can go into town for 5USD.

All things considered, it was a good stay. If you want sun, good drinks, nice pools, and good for Cuba food... I would book this resort. Just remember if you are looking for nightlife this isn't the resort but there is always a place to get a drink and hangout.

Don't stay here!!
Love the Varadero area will go again but this hotel should be ashamed of it's self.
The people in charge of this place need a wake call. My husband and I stayed here between Feb 22 2024 and Feb 29th 2024.
Our main complaint is the lack of cleaning everywhere. No soap in any of the common area bathrooms.
Our room looked good but when you look closer you see OH it has NOT been cleaned. Our room was not cleaned for the entire week.
The sink was plugged when we arrived to our room took 3days to get that fixed, never got fresh towels and yes we asked and we tipped. They smile says yes then nothing.

I very much enjoyed my stay at the Ashton. Especially nice being a new resort and the rooms are beautiful. This is a very clean resort and the staff works hard to keep it that way . The staff here is young a lot are new but very friendly and efficient. I tip a bit every where I go and never wanted for anything. Food , the food was good , well seasoned and of good variety. There are shortages in Cuba so I travel with a few items to make my meals more like home . For this resort I recommend table syrup, peanut butter and your choice of condiments. I bring a variety of take out packages. Having Cuban ice cream every day was fabulous! The burgers in the snack bar were really good too. The big hit at this resort is the coffee bar . Their frozen drinks are delicious, frozen lemonade is a must try . Beach , the beach is beautiful but the water was a little deeper than expected lol small shelf at the beaches edge getting in and about five feet out it was four feet deep already . Most days were wavy it was fun . There are rocks but they are large and flat no need for water shoes water is so clear you can see where they are . There’s also a plaza a five minute walk from the resort (to the left walking out) you can buy beer groceries and toiletries ect . There’s also a great little restaurant around the corner of the plaza with a chalkboard menu in the window . It’s in Spanish but fortunately a friend could read it and five of us had lunch and fancy drinks all for 28 dollars American!! Oh , I forgot to mention there’s a large orang cat that suns on the rocks outside the lobby of the resort around dinner time . The guests have named him Garfield. I don’t think he has many teeth left but did appreciate a couple slices of ham from the buffet . He looks very content. I go to Cuba often and I would put this resort in my top five .

Hotel does not meet expectations. We are presently staying 10 days and are considering returning home early. The food is totally sub par. I am not a foodie expecting European or Canadian 5-star standards but they're not able to meet the strict minimum. They ere often missing eggs for breakfast and Variety is non existent, the same buffet items everyday.

On a positive note, the building is new and very clean. The pool is also really nice but the beach is NOT like the Varadero peninsula where you get a white silky sand. At this location the sand is granular and has many tiny broken sea shells along the shoreline which make entry into the water quite difficult but once you're in it's nice.

Having been to Cuba many times in the past, I would recommend spending a little more money at one of the other properties on the peninsula.

This was truly a trip that filled my heart! I will miss cuba, the people, and the culture so much! I truly was touched by ever single staff member that took the time to talk to us, tell us about the culture, their lives, and how kind and passionate each one was!!

Gardeners: Oscar and Karel thank you for working so hard gardening and keeping the grounds so clean and put together, you guys work so hard and it shows. Everyday I would see these too working really hard and even on the hot days they would still be working as hard as they were the day before. Oscar taught me some Spanish and always made sure to stop what he was doing to say hi with a big smile! Karel picked me a flower everyday and at the end of our trip he gave every women in our group a beautiful flower! These too men are so passionate about their job and talented at what they do! They will for sure be missed.
Osmel and omar were also gardeners and were outside working hard everyday! They are very friendly and always make sure to smile when you go by! The resort would not be what it is without the gardeners working and keeping the grounds well kept!!🙌🏻🤍

Entertainment: Kevito, Rosanna, Enrique, and Duan, thank you for dancing with us every day and showing us the Cuban moves!! You all were amazing! Kevito thank you for teaching me the merengue and salsa!! You were always up beat, high energy and had so much passion for what you do!!! These songs will be stuck in my head for a while and I’ll be dancing in Canada to them☺️

Snack bar: Cheylin and staff you were amazing!!! Thank you Cheylin for always briging us the best ham and cheese sandwiches, drinks, and being the best high energy waitress!

Overall the staff at this resort are very passionate, are there to make sure your stay is a good one and overall have your best interest at heart! One tip I would give anyone going to Cuba and this resort is that you are in a different country and that have different ways of doing things than we do, so being patient and immersed in the culture, the food, the people and and the way that they do things is how you’re going to have an amazing trip!
