Multiple screenings at airport security, presumably looking for drugs. Otherwise quite efficient with current small travel numbers. Approx 40 min from airport with a private transit. Hotel checkin was easy, but very few people here due to covid. Upgraded to Selection for better wifi and beach waiter. Only 2 restaurants with very limited hours (average food). Cocktails & coffee/cappuccino are great. Buffet above average. Rm minifridge only has water, cola & 1 beer per service. Bed is hard but good sheets & pillows. Elevator is VERY slow, so if busy I would not have wanted 9th floor. Sunwing rep only here 1 hr per day and not very useful. Satellite tv is low def, channels: 3 US, CTV national, 1 Asian, 2 Russian, many Spanish including ESPN for NA sports. Lots of cover at the beach but very little by the nice pool. Upgrade gave me more wifi but its format is terrible. Constantly cutting out and requiring repeated cumbersome logins with frequent calls to front desk for resets. Liked how it was easy to avoid cigarette smoke, but again it wasn’t busy. Covid PCR test is $40 Cdn, and told to just show up, not book ahead as not busy. Spa Massage is very reasonably priced, with a Selection discount of 20% it’s about $60 for 50min. When you do exchange currency use the beach staff, as they give up to 40 CUC for $1 Cdn (in town only for 17, at spa only 24). Also cheaper cigars there, though I can’t speak to the quality. Weather has been good though cool and windy today. Price for the week on a Sunwing sale with the upgrade & insurance was $1200. Flight times were very good at 9am departure (5+hrs due to a stop in Cuba), and a 3:30pm direct return flight. Staff friendly and helpful. For the price I’d definitely return!

The vacation was enjoyable, the room was clean and elegant, and the main buffet food was amazing even though repetitive. It took some time to figure out the open hours for each restaurant, luckily, there are QR codes everywhere. The New Year’s Eve dinner featured a lobster, otherwise it was marginally different from the everyday menu. On January 1 I took a catamaran tour. The passengers included a few married couples of the different ages and several young charming girls who sunbathed on the catamaran net. Mind there were no snacks on the board, but the lobster dinner was good. A huge rat finished my 5$ pina-colada while I looked the other way and made a lady climb the table. When a lady complained to the waiter about the rat, they say that they know but they are so tasty. Some say it was a possum. There is daily entertainment and sports near the hotel pool, yoga, tai-chi, water polo, salsa etc. I even got one nightly ‘professional’ Cuban salsa lesson with a dancer (no lessons on Tuesdays, New Year Eve and days around). Wednesday is a dance with dancers event. Occasional live music was fine. `Disco Retro night` started with one salsa song, one merengue, one bachata, followed by reggaeton and timba, but it was fun. The one dollar US banknotes tips are gladly accepted , but not Canadian loonies or toonies. Chocolate worked fine as a gift too. There was no coffee in the room, only tea bags, do not forget mosquito repellent and sunscreen - those available at the hotel or town shops although very expensive. The clientele is mostly Russian, German, Canadian and Cuban. The free WiFi was limited to 5 hours per day, which was ok with me, though I did not immediately understood that I should call reception next day to get next 5h. Serge

Eleven nights at the Blau Varadero as a solo traveller. An all-inclusive resort isn't usually my kind of place but with Covid I thought that I'd be safe and I discovered a great hotel/resort. With numerous restaurants, activities and entertainment available you could easily spend your whole time in this resort. The location is perfect with access to the beach via a wooden bridge through the 'jungle'. The beach was very safe without any hustlers, so I was happy to leave my possessions on the sun bed whilst in the sea. The food was good and staff friendly, with a special mention to the waiter Ernisto who is a credit to the hotel. Lots of other solo travellers so it's easy to make friends here. Wi-Fi isn't great but is free and available throughout the hotel, including the beach bar. If you play tennis they have two excellent courts with floodlights. My only criticism would be the lifts. You often have a long wait and it might be worth requesting a room on one of the lower floors. I was on the fifth floor which had good sea views but was easily accessible by stairs to the third floor (reception). The guidance I received was to wear face masks when close to other people so when ordering at the bar, going into the restaurant or in busy communal areas. The staff all wore masks. Lots of hand sanitiser available and a resident doctor if you need a pre-departure test.

My eighth stay at Blau and with all the craziness in our world today, this is the place to escape it. The hotel is always welcoming, the staff are extremely friendly and the entertainment/sports crew are on-point always. Around the pool, there's much to do if you desire to....or like me....just lay back and enjoy the sun and sounds. One staff, Yusnaby, in particular goes over and above to ensure you are greeted with kindness each day and to ensure you have everything you need to enjoy your day. She's full of energy and brilliant to chat with. A bonus to my stay. A huge plus are the beach beds...they are huge and clean and perfectly placed. Tops Hotel for sure.

Stayed here as a solo traveller and was not the only one. Quickly found a community of friendly faces and felt the staff went over and above to be friendly, especially little touches like remembering your drinks order. Food was fine for the usual all inclusive standard and they hosted some special Christmas events which stepped things up a notch. Well equipped gym and direct access to the beach. Room was bright and airy. Only complaint perhaps was slow lifts- but you can always take the stairs!
