The Sanctuary at Grand Memories Varadero earns high marks for its attentive staff and prime beachfront location, with guests often praising its vibrant Cuban atmosphere and a plethora of engaging activities. While some visitors find the hotel to offer good value, others feel it doesn't justify the cost, citing outdated rooms and maintenance issues. Despite the lively entertainment, noise levels can detract from tranquility. Cleanliness generally receives positive comments, although inconsistencies in housekeeping are noted.

My sister and I really enjoyed our stay at Sanctuary Varadero a week ago. It was my second time to this resort, and seventh time to Cuba. Last April my husband and I had a fun week there. It was nice to see some familiar faces again, especially Karl, manager at the Sanctuary restaurant who does such a wonderful job – my sister and I had several delicious meals there and the service at the Gala dinner and Italian night were especially was outstanding. We loved our prompt morning room service deliveries of amazing cappuccinos by the friendly staff and we loved the mimosas at breakfast too, and the fact that sparkling wine flows freely at Sanctuary! For lunch we discovered the Diamond Club section classy outdoor seating area at the Grand Memories Buffet, where we enjoyed the great selection of food, and would highly recommend it! Very nice to sit outside at the nicely set-up tables. Jesus was our favourite server there – so friendly and refilled our wine glasses without hesitation! Dinner at the Asian restaurant was also very nice. The beach was beautiful as always and there are more palapas this year in the Sanctuary section - so great to see this improvement! The staff do a very good job of making sure only Sanctuary guests use the Sanctuary beach area which is greatly appreciated. We were happy to get a room on the third floor in one of the buildings I had requested through email – thank you Sabine! It was very clean and we could see the pretty ocean over the mangroves when standing on the balcony, however, the heavy patio doors are extremely difficult to slide open and close, so for two ladies it was a big struggle every day to get out on the balcony – wish they would be greased so they slide easily. The liquor dispenser included Havana Club amber rum which definitely was a plus – my favourite! We enjoyed it to the last drop! Our butler Mario introduced himself the morning after we arrived and sought us out every day he was working to ask if we needed anything and if everything was okay - such a nice young man! Daily maid service was thorough and friendly and Lydaisy brought us the robes we asked for and the colas every day and even face cloths! The only disappointment was that before leaving for the airport I was questioned by the lady at reception and then our maid, who joined us at reception, about a missing blanket from the closet in our room. Although they quickly believed that we never saw a blanket in the closet, it was a sad way to end our stay. A policy should be in place where every item in the room is accounted for by staff when guests check in to prevent this kind of mistake when guests leave. It didn’t ruin our trip though. I still think this is one of the best resorts in Cuba and would recommend and hope to return.

This was our 4th vacation to the Sanctuary at Grand Memories in the last 3 years and this time was just as amazing as the 1st.

The management and staff at the Sanctuary at Grand Memories are defiantly exceptional. The Director Residente Asier Moliner is constantly walking around checking on everything making sure that the resort is running smoothly and pitching in where needed. The food and beverage manager Karl is very informative, professional and goes above and beyond greeting guests and making sure that you are served promptly from breakfast to dinner at the Ave Del Paraiso restaurant.

Our butler Mario was great. He was very helpful in making any changes to our dinner reservations, taking care of any other requests we had for our room and also checking in with us frequently making sure everything was going okay and to see if there was anything else he could do for us.

The rooms, beach, pool and the grounds are spotless. The beach area at this resort is very well maintained and beautiful and you can always find a chair at the beach or pool. All of the staff at the resort work very hard and long hours but yet they are always smiling and extremely friendly. Aguedo the gardener does a great job maintaining the grounds and is often seen making little handmade gifts for the guests, which is very nice touch. The snack bar staff were efficient and Roxana and Barbie standout with their friendless and service always offering to bring your food or drinks over to you rather than have you stand there at the counter and wait.

The food at all the a la carte restaurants were delicious. The Ave del Paraiso and Gourmet were the best and the lobster and beef tenderloin was excellent. The option to have room-service or the a la carte’s for breakfast, lunch and dinner was very nice. The service and drink quality at the beach and lounge bars was also very good. The lounge bar also has a different live band playing each evening starting around 9pm.

If you are looking for a relaxing vacation look no further, this resort has it all, its truly a 5 Star Cuban Resort!

We are so impressed with the Sanctuary at Grand Memories, management and staff that we are sending our parents there in March.

Thanks again for another memorable vacation!!!

This was the first trip to Cuba for myself and my husband I am so glad we choose to stay at the Sanctuary at Grand Memories everything was wonderful we will be back again for sure.
I'll start with our butlers Able and Juana (sorry if I spelt it wrong) they were both amazing Juana met us when we arrived gave us a tour to explain the layout and was quick to book our dinner reservations and was even able to change on to an earlier time when asked. Able was always waiting when we came downstairs in the morning asking if there was anything he could do for us whatever we asked of both we got. Juana even found out information for my husband for church on Sunday. Great service from both.
Karl the food and beverage manager was very friendly and outgoing he came to our table everytime we ate in the Sanctuary restaurant asking how everything was what types of things we had been doing with our days and offering great suggestions. I also noticed how wonderful and appreciative he was to his staff this to me is a sign of a great leader! Kudos to you Karl.
Liosdani (Leo) in the sanctuary bar was amazing quick service always with a huge smile it only took a day before we would walk in and depending on the time of day he knew what we wanted.
Liset was our room service person so friendly and the room was very clean everyday she made sure I had extra water in my room everyday and also put one in the fridge for me too.
Johan one of the drivers was awesome always showing just at the moment we were hoping to find a ride up to the big house.
I would highly recommend this resort to anyone and we are very much looking forward to coming back

We did go up to the main house buffet a couple times Buganville and had the most amazing service from Sandra as you might see in another review the day we were leaving I saw a customer crying as she hugged her goodbye. Sandra you are an amazing person!
I also want to mention Johan the driver he always turned up at just the moment we were hoping for a ride up to the main resort when heading for dinner. Thank you so much

I just returned from a 5-day vacation at the Sanctuary with a colleague and I highly recommend it. The beach is situated on a beautiful stretch of the peninsula and that was my number #1 priority. The staff are fantastic. Gretchen and Jose were our personal concierges and they were attentive without being intrusive. Thank you both!

Traveling to Cuba during this time was relatively easy. You do not need proof of a PCR test to get in (proof of vaccination is enough) and the resort has the clinic available where you pay $30 and get the results the next day. The test must be administered 72 hours before your return your return to Canada. The lineup for the test took about 40 -45 minutes. If you keep in perspective that you are in Cuba and this minor inconvenience is the price to pay, then you'll be fine.

I felt very safe at Sanctuary. Covid protocols were being followed. Staff were serving food at the buffets (we were not handling the food ourselved) and we were sanitizing our hand when arriving at the restaunts and wearing masks when walking around in indoor common areas.

The rooms are wethered and need repairs, but the bed and pillows were so comfortable-many people commented on how well they slept. I have traveled to Cuba over 20 times over the years and the people who work on the resort are consistently warm and friendly. The food is very limited even in the best of times. Wifi availability was free ( you were given 3 hour "cards" at a time, but you could ask for more. I spent very little time on the internet.) If you can appreciate traveling again after two years, and understand that Cuba has limited resources available (exacerbated by Covid and the American embargo on goods), then you will have a fantastic time.

If you must have ketchup with your fries, you will be sorely disappointed and may want to consider visiting another country.

Sanctuary has a beautiful beach and the staff are wonderful. This resort is a great choice. I would return here without hesitation.

We stayed at the Sanctuary at Grand Memories Varadero for our first ever trip to Cuba in early Jan, based on a recommendation by friends who had visited there a couple of years ago. Overall, we had mixed feelings.

First the good. Although everyone we met at the resort were very nice, we have to give a shout out to a few who went above and beyond during our stay. Carl, the Food Services manager at Sanctuary's private restaurant was amazing. He was very informative and always took the time out to talk to us and answer any questions we had. We also want to give a very, very big Thank You to Thalia at the Sanctuary restaurant. Thalia was absolutely amazing and we would always try and sit in her section at the restaurant. Not only was she friendly and great at her job, but she took the time out to talk to us every night just about everyday life in Cuba. She was such fun and definitely made our dinners much more enjoyable and memorable. Lastly, Roxanna and Barbara from the Sanctuary Snack Bar (by the pool) were were also fantastic!

Now for the not so good. We had the unfortunate luck of staying in Building 35. I believe other people on Trip Advisor had also mentioned their dis-satisfaction with Building 35 and now I know why. Our room was horrible! The washroom was dark and old, the shower was dirty and moldy and we saw a couple of big roaches/beetles! The mini bar fridge was so loud that it woke us up at night every time the motor turned on. Our biggest issue however, was the dampness in the room, No matter what we tried, every morning we would wake up and our pillows and sheets would be so damp, as if they were just washed and hung to dry. The dampness got into everything and made our clothes smelly as well.
Another thing that was not great was the fact that people were saving the lounge chairs by the Sanctuary pool every morning by 8am. There was not a person in sight at 8am by the pool, but almost every single lounge chair had a towel on it.

I overheard a couple of people saying that they had been to the Sanctuary a couple of years ago and that it had gone downhill since then. I would have to agree. Although I would give the people and service a 5 star, the resort itself would only be a 3 or 3.5 at the most.

This was our second visit to the Grand Memories and our first visit to the Sanctuary as we we're the bride and groom to a wedding party of 15. At first arrival there was a bit of confusion as to where we all had to check in. Do not got to the main reception as the Sanctuary has their own reception. Go there to check in. Our room was a junior suite with all the comforts of home. The next morning we met with Thais to go over the plans for our beach ceremony. Thais was very professional and well prepared with details pertaining to our ceremony. The next day we also met with Yamaisi. From that moment and the days to follow we were treated like royalty. Yamaisi and Thais went out of their way to provide with us with special dinner plans for us and all our guests. A day before or so before our ceremony we were treated with a heart shape cake for us to enjoy in our room, and at the foot of the bed were to hearts with red and white flower pedals linked together. On the day of the ceremony the shuttle drivers picked my wife and I up in seperate rooms at different times and drove us to the beach where our ceremony was held. Yamaisi performed the ceremony and did a super job. Our reception was held in the Cuban restaurant by the beach. The food and the service was superb. The next morning we were treated to a special breakfast in our room.Overall this was a pleasant and very accommodating experience and I would definitely recommend this resort to any couple interested in tying the knot.

This was my second time traveling to Cuba. My first experience was not the greatest which made me never want to go back but gave it another shot since I had a good group of people to join with. ( 8 in total ). The Sanctuary was an excellent choice of hotel from others we were looking at. Upon checking in, we met our first butler "Adrian", whom showed each one of us our rooms and explained everything about the resort and where to find most things ( we arrived late so it was pretty dark to give us a full tour ). They have a 24hr bar located right on site that plays nightly music ( the guy singing and playing the piano was amazing ). It never got super crowded where you'd be waiting long for a drink. Service was fast. I'll give a double thumbs up to "Jescus" for remembering my drink order I always wanted. On our second day we had a different butler "Norvi" who went above and beyond our expectations. What ever we needed, for example more towels, room fridge to be refiled and even the liquor dispenser in the room to be replaced with new ones, he got it done! He was very kind and pleasant. The butlers are always walking around the resort making sure everyone is good and seeing if anything is needed which I loved. If you ever needed to find something or get something, they're there to help you. If I return to Cuba, I will definitely be staying at this resort again. Its super close walking distance to the beach which the Sanctuary has its own beach area ( no kids ). The pool area was never rowdy with it being an adults only hotel, and the pool area had decent entertainment and I could always get a chair to tan for the day. The food is ok, but you cant have high expectations when going Cuba. If you needed your lobster fix, they have few restaurants on the strip that have it, although abit expensive ( 23cuc ) for what you get, but it was tasty.

Visited February 1st to 8th. This was our second time at the resort and we brought another couple back with us because we enjoyed it so much the 1st time.
The rooms are still in need of an upgrade but the service has only gotten better.
We ended up in a room in block 30 which we were worried about as last time we were in 34 facing the water but as it turned out it was just as tranquil. You get more noise from the resort next door than you do from Grand Memories.
Butlers Renier and Melitza were amazing, and it was great to see Hanoy still there after 3 years and he is amazing as ever.
Breakfast and lunch being in the Sanctuary was perfect, the bacon at breakfast crispy and always available, the servers have great memories for your preferences and the Food and Beverage Manager was always available, but I really wish supper could be there nightly as well. The main buffet was extremely busy. Usually at this time of year both buffets would be open but only one was during our stay.
We did not enjoy the Gourmet à la Carte whatsoever to be honest. The Italian was good, but we did 2 nights in the Sanctuary restaurant.
There was no lack of seating at the pool or beach and the entertainment team always had something on the go.
Amporo (spelling may be off) took care of our room for the week and she was amazing. Always something cute left on the bed, took care of any special requests and saw us off with a big hug. We had requested King sized beds which couldn't be accommodated but she made the most of our pushed together doubles.
If there were updated rooms, supper in the Sanctuary and extended wifi (to have a private check in at home instead of facetime on the lobby for all to hear) this resort would be beyond perfect. As it is, it is a slice of heaven that we will likely return to again in the future because of the service.

We were very pleased with the overall experience of our 7 day all inclusive holiday at the Sanctuary. This was our 2nd trip to Cuba and first at this hotel. I don't think I would go anywhere else. One bonus was we were able to use all the facilities at the neighboring hotel Grand Memories but found that pools and buffet were to busy for our liking so we stayed close to the Sanctuary with the exception of the a la carts restaurants which we enjoyed. Everything was clean and the food was better than expected. Our maids cleaned the room daily and were very pleasant and accommodating with requests. Also one of the benefits was we did not have to wait for anything, from past experiences at another hotels we found lines up getting omelets, specialty foods and drinks frustrating but not here, staff were pleasant and tried to please. The atmosphere was perfect for people who want to relax around the pool without party animals jumping around and being rowdy. We are younger and enjoy having a good time but enjoy it around like minded adults. We meet a lot of people throughout the week and will have friends that last for a life time. The number one benefit of staying at the Sanctuary was the benefit of a butler. Our butler was Norvi who was amazing. He had a great personality and was one of the happiest people I meet on our holiday. Would recommend him "10 out of 10". Our friends had other butlers with similar experiences. For everyone deciding on where to go in Cuba you can't go wrong here a touch more money but once you see the benefits I'm sure anyone would agree. I'm sure there's a few small things that could be better but the good over shadowed them, We will be back in 2021!!!

The check in was very good it was dark and we could not see the grounds properly, we had a issue with our door on our room wouldn't lock it could be opened without the key very unsecure, eventually we was told we would have to wait until the next day before we could be changed to a different room, the rooms are clean and tidy. this did happen but took some time the next day, i also reported a light on the stairway to 2 butler's it took me to speak to a manger to get this fixed, the grounds are immaculate, the staff are mainly friendly. the beach needs some tidying we do not smoke and it is littered with cigarette buts, i actually walked on a dink tin which was all rusty this could have been nasty, if the staff on the beach concentrated on keeping the beach clean and tidy instead of selling people there money for a higher rate than the banks and cigars it could be better, as for the food it is very poor for al-o-carte and very limited on variety of food far better choice at the main buffet in grand memories. on our way home the meals on the plane was better than the meals we had in our entire stay at this hotel, it isn't the food is bad it is that is cooked and prepared incorrectly, i did speak to the chef and the management about this, now as for the drinks on arrival no vodka or gin a couple of days later they run out of whisky, brandy, and red wine so drinks are very limited, i also spoke with management about this, what you get a drink in is a shambles I had a beer in a ice cream sundae glass and a whisky in a coffee glass, the main bar in Grand memories served all there drinks in plastic cups, as for the toilet facilities it was rather hit and miss if there was any toilet roll or soap to wash your hands with, many didn't have any way of drying your hands after washing them, now for disabled facilities there are many ramps for disabled access which is good, but then you come to disabled toilets right across the site these are not at a serviceable standard many issues and one i feel should be closed for maintenance, disabled access to the beach and beach bars is none existent, now for the pool areas i see some issues here also glasses being served round the pool this is a no no an this is a accident waiting to happen, the over flow grid from the pool the covering should be flush to the floor this is also a accident waiting to happen. one pool in grand memories had a green substance on the walls in the pool i feel this should not have been open to the public in its current state, now for security in the sanctuary i only ever seen then once at night . i requested them to remove some people from the pool i have also spoken with the management about this, there is definitely room for improvement at this hotel, the service in the restaurants in general is very poor slow and when you do get your food it is generally cold or not what you asked for. we was so disappointed with it after reading the reviews on here and the TUI brochures all though the management did listen and try to make it memorable Luz and Johana tried very hard.
but our memories of the Sanctuary at Grand memories are not the memories we was hoping for

The tip works in the following way, you give it when you consider it, either because they provided you with good service or because you want to give it, the currency in which you give it is also your decision, you can give it in any currency you choose. you are currently using either Cuban, Candience or American pesos

Food shortages are very bad there. They just received potatoes yesterday for the first time this year. Powder milk, Kraft dinner, jello, anything along that line. Candy is also a big thing. Hope this helps
