Detailed Reviews
The hotel is clean and safe and the beach is beautiful and not too busy. The breakfast included is excellent and both the beach and more formal restaurants have a nice variety of offerings. Also convenient is a playground right next to the main restaurant which is nice for those traveling with children. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful to respond to any needs. I would definitely stay here again.

I came to Blue Jack Tar after a very unpleasant stay in a nearby property, and I really regretted I dis not book it for all my stay in Dominican Republic.
The difference between this hotel and others is easy to sum up: in Blue Jack Tar they know what “service” is.
Rooms are perfect: very nice, large, clean and cared in every detail, from boiler and choice of teas, to covid safety set including masks, hand sanitizer, to a perfect courtesy line in the bathroom… congratulations to the house keeper!!!
Beach beds are fantastic, restaurants too and restaurant prices are very reasonable.
In the mess of crowded and low level all inclusive of the area, this hotel is a rare pearl!

My husband to be and I stayed for a night in a beautiful two bedroom apartment on the bottom floor with a Jacuzzi tub outside it was amazing! Pool is beautiful and the beach was nearby. We had two bottles of wine delivered to our room as well as a morning breakfast so we could be alone. In the evening we enjoyed some of the most amazing food at the restaurant on site. We will most definitely be back thank you for the amazing time

While very peaceful and relaxing, this was not nearly what we expected. The beach is everything that was promised. Beyond that, most of the videos and photos on the website are actually of brand new luxury condominiums being sold on the same property. We felt duped. Just make sure you look very closely at what you're booking (versus all the other options being promoted on the website). The "hotel" itself is a series of 2-story bungalows that date back several decades. It's old, but clean and reasonably well-maintained. And it falls very short of the exciting videos and photos featured more prominently on the website.

We arranged a cab and guide to go to the resort, turned into a private excursion. Loved it for a beach resort day pass.
The resort is older but nice enough from what we could see. We had a lovely day bed on the beach, SO comfortable, a waiter from the Kite Bar and Grill and our guide to take great care of us. The restaurant had WiFi and clean bathrooms. There's a little area of vendors next to it, and the beach vendors were not too bad. Lunch was ok, great service at the bar/restaurant.
Guessing the pool complex is off from the beach near the rooms, so that's not included. didn't matter, beach was lovely. Saw some folks wind surfing, it's nice and quite and almost secluded. Just wish there was a rinse off shower somewhere in the area.
TOTALLY would go back.

This is an old, outdated and pretty dirty place. As some of the reviews pointed out (and I wish I would read them more carefully) the pictures are misleading. Definitely not worth the price, and no way this is a 4 star place. Max 2. Glad it’s only a short stay here.

Great location excellent staff but the rooms need to be totally revamped. Everything looks and is past its usefulness. Breakfast is excellent. The resturant offers lots of choices and the food is very good. Very close proximity to the golf course. Easy access to the beach.

This is a difficult review for me to write, because the staff of this hotel is very good. The problem is that this hotel has some serious deficiencies, and is definitely not for everyone.
The good things: Nice room, very nice staff, good (single) restaurant, and strong free wifi.
The bad things:
1) This sprawling complex is really a real estate development with a relatively small hotel attached. There is no large central lobby, rather a tiny check-in office with (usually) only one person manning the desk. The rooms are located in a series of two-story bungalows. Mine contained eight rooms.
2) I booked this hotel specifically because only breakfast is included. That is, I like to visit nearby restaurants. In fact, there are very few choices, because most of the neighboring hotels are all inclusive, and there are few nearby restaurants. The hotel itself has only one restaurant, which was very good.
3) The hotel is isolated, and a round-trip cab fare to Puerto Plata (ten minutes away) is $35 dollars. There is a public bus that will take you to centro (a "B" on the front).
4) The hotel does not offer the following basic hotel services:
a) Local calls from the room. They must be made from the lobby.
b) No currency conversion. A member of the staff will take you to the nearby small mall, which is outside the complex, by golf court.
c) No stores (only at the mall)
d) Small pool that was covered by bugs. I swam in this pool every day, and I became good friends with the same bugs each day. A long-time Canadian visitor told me that he preferred to swim in the ocean, because of the bugs.
e) The wifi is not password protected, so one should be careful about accessing sensitive information.
This trip, I am in DR for four weeks, so five nights was no problem for me. I was very comfortable, but I spent $35 dollars per day for cabs, because I ate dinner or lunch almost every day in Puerto Plata. My concern is that others should know that this is a non-traditional hotel, before they decide to spend their long awaited vacation here.
If you are a recluse, a writer, or a criminal hiding from the authorities, this is an ideal hotel for you.
Because the beach is north facing, the strong north easterly trade winds make the water a bit choppy. I swam in the ocean every day, and I recommend that you walk to the eastern point of the bay. There is better protection there from the wind. There is no high surf on this bay, in spite of the wind, because there is a shallow entry.
