At Hotel El Palacio, our goal is to provide a comfortable, enjoyable place to stay in Puerto Plata. We offer an alternative to the big resort hotels. Whether you are visiting for business or pleasure, you will find a second home at Hotel El Palacio. The Palace hotel is a family hotel in the center of the city of Puerto Plata. is installed in an old building from 1920, completely renovated keeping the old air in combination with the modern. The first level has a store of European antiques of the highest level. A stay at Hotel El Palacio does not only include excellent service and great comfort. You also get to experience the rich history of the building (free of charge). Let's go back to the start. This marvelous building was constructed in 1920 by a Spanish architect, in assignment of Mr. R. Bents, spouse of Mrs. Ferrari. Mr. Bens owned one of the biggest sugar cane plants of the Dominican Republic. Unfortunately he lost a lot of his wealth after WOII, forcing him to sell the premises. Over the next years, the building was occupied by the first Banca Reserva of the Dominican Republic, a hospital and finally some small gift shops. At this point in time, the building suffered from immense decay. We didn't want to let a beautiful building like this go to waste. So we decided to completely renovate it to its original state. After a couple of years of hard work, we are proud to present the result to all our guests. At Hotel El Palacio, our goal is to provide a comfortable, enjoyable place to stay in Puerto Plata. We offer an alternative to the big resort hotels. Whether you are visiting for business or pleasure, you will find a second home at Hotel El Palacio.

This hotel was our savior in the midst of so many extremely expensive hotels that would only take minimum of 2 nights with reservations.
Hotel El Palacio welcomed us with no previous notice and for 1 night. They’re rate was quite reasonable and their focus was for us to have a relaxing and pleasant stay. The rooms are spacious and clean. They’re conveniently located in downtown Puerto Plata.
Our Hosts Stan & Marian (not sure of the spelling) were accommodating, caring and hands down amazing people. They went the extra mile for us and made our stay more enjoyable with their kindness. They cooked a delicious breakfast for us, which included 6 different type of fruits, best scrambled eggs I’ve had. It was a pleasure to have met them and their beautiful dog 🐾
Highly recommend this place

My husband and I were traveling to Puerto Plata and wanted to avoid the "all inclusive" genre of hotels. We came across El Hotel Palacio online and the idea of staying at a boutique hotel in the middle of Puerto Plata was very appealing. We could not have been more surprised and pleased with what we found. A gorgeous, meticulously rebuilt historical building with the privacy and affordability we sought. Marianne and Stan, the proprietors were welcoming, friendly, helpful and tremendous hosts. Our room with 10" high ceilings was spectacular and only outdone by the personal chef on premise whose meal presentation beat most fine restaurants that we frequent. We rented a car and felt very safe with the parking due to the security staff.

The last three weeks I have been able to stay at Hotel El Palacio. During my vacation I got a very positive impression of the hotel, the staff and the owners, a Dutch couple. The reception by the owners is warm. The hotel is very well organized. The rooms are clean and attractively decorated. It is cleaned daily. Each room has been individually decorated.

The hotel is in excellent condition. It has been completely renovated by the owners and furnished with antiques and fine paintings from the antique shop next door, also owned by the owners of the hotel. The owners feel very involved with the condition and maintenance, which ensures that the hotel feels like if it is brand new. The rooms are equipped with WiFi, air conditioning, television, in addition to a private toilet and private shower. Decor is very attractive thanks to the personal attention of the owners. It features a patio terrace where you can sit in the shade. Also a small pool for cooling off.

The breakfast and the food in the hotel is excellent. The chef can prepare both local and international food. Very nice to also occasionally taste the local cuisine! All the food is fresh and the breakfast is very extensive. The owners will make you feel at home and that you do not run short. I also got a lot of tips from the owners where to eat and what sites in the Dominican Republic are worth visiting. Also tips to get the local price, which saved me a lot of money.

The hotel is in a prime location. Within walking distance of the square in the center of town. Also within walking distance of the fortress on the beach and the promenade of the city. Many restaurants and other amenities are within walking distance, such as a bicycle and car rental, a bank, a pharmacy and a 10-minute walk from a large supermarket. The owners speak all possible languages and are always willing to help you find your way.

The combination of the beautiful hotel, delicious food, the hospitality of the owners and the staff made me really have had an excellent holiday. I can warmly recommend El Palacio to anyone looking for a good hotel or stay during a vacation in the Dominican Republic. The price quality ratio is excellent. In hindsight very glad that I did not book a resort but this hotel in the heart of the city. Thanks for the great holiday and I'll definitely be back!

Prior to our arrival, communication with the hotel had been difficult, then it was all apparent when we arrived - the hotel is for sale!

The maintenance man was just leaving when we arrived and was surprised to see us having not been told of our arrival. He did the best he could to make the beds and get the rooms ready as this was not usually his domaine. My room had an old pair of shoes that were left in the closet, no soap and the sheets were like sandpaper. There is a big hole in the ceiling in the reception area as the top floor has never been finished!

When the owners finally showed up, Stan try to blame it on me as I had sent a message a few days prior inquiring about the 27 pools nearby. I had indeed put the wrong date in my text, to which I replied that he should have checked his reservations. The owners have obviously checked out!

What a great find for our first trip to the DR! We had two nights here before staying a week at a nearby (hideous) resort and I settled on this hotel due to the previous reviews- thank you other TA reviewers you didn't steer us wrong! The owners are amazing and when I called from the airport to ask the best way to get to town they sent a taxi to get us. They and their small staff honestly are the reason this place is so great! They will give you tips on restaurants and shopping, and will negotiate with the taxi drivers so you don't have to! They even pressed my capris for me! The hotel itself was gorgeous, with original tiles and soaring ceilings- it felt like what I always thought old Havana must have been like before 1959. The owners said that when they bought it that it was basically a shell that they have lovingly renovated. Our room was very comfortable and had a large bathroom attached with a shower and two sinks. The in-room A/C was very welcome after a day of wandering the shops and historical areas nearby. There was even a plunge pool on the comfortable patio (where an amazingly delicious breakfast is served), but we didn't use it. This is the place to stay when visiting Puerto Plata!

Traveling in the Dominican Republic last year, our first stop was at the lovely, historic Hotel El Palacio in the city of Puerta Plata. This unique hotel has been beautifully restored by the owners, Stan and Marianne. The lobby was so pretty, and our room with its high ceilings, big windows and comfortable bed was just what we needed after our travels. The bathroom was large and perfectly accommodating. The best part of the hotel was the large terrace at the back, which overlooked the city. The pleasant breeze and Marianne's beautiful, colorful plants made it the perfect spot to have our breakfast every morning. Stan was the cook, and he made a wonderful breakfast every day. He even made us a local dish one morning and everything was delicious! Besides their wonderful hotel and breakfasts, they were so helpful in directing us to places to see and eat in the area. They accompanied us to see the place where Columbus first landed, and the experience with them was so much fun! The Hotel El Palacio is centrally located, and Stan and Marianne made it feel like we were staying in the home of old friends. We highly recommend it!

Our group was pampered on our trip to DR. Our experience was much more like staying with good friends who wanted nothing more than for us to be happy. For example, Stam (the proprietor) drove me all over town to find a particular soccer jersey for my son. The outdoor sitting area constantly has a cool breeze that comforts after a hard day of work. Their knowledge and experience of the area brings you to safe and tasty local cuisine. In addition to their kindness to us, the Dohmens pour out generosity to the local Dominicans through donated food and other forms of charitable loving kindness. If I have to need to visit Puerta Plata again, there is no where else that I would prefer to stay.

This is the crazy, gorgeous hotel that sums up what I love about this country and the mix of talented, visionary ex-pats who see beyond the ruins of historic buildings that might otherwise have been left to rot. When Stan and Marianne brought this building it had no roof, had been empty since the 50's and had 6 inches of bird poop protecting the incredible original tiles. Simply amazing, go there.

I have visited this small hotel for several months while working in Puerto Plata, so I recommended it for the quiet ambience, good service directly from the European owners and comfortable rooms. The location in the Historical Center is perfect for short visits to the area and for businesses as it is very close to the waterfront and most of the restaurants, stores and museums in the area.
