My friend and I stayed at this resort March 23 - 28, 2014. This was my third time staying at the Catalonia Royal Bavaro. My previous two stays were great so we decided to go back. The stay started out fine, our room was ready...More
The stay was wonderful. From beginning to end the service was great. Always treated with a smile. The staff always tried to meet your requests. The dinner options were very good. Excellent choice for a relaxing vacation with your partner.
We loved our trip!!! We definitely want to go back in the years to come. I loved being on the Royal side, it made me feel a little more important and it was definitely more quiet and calm. So if you wanted a more upbeat...More
Our visit to Catalonia Royal Bavaro started out a bit rocky but it did improve. We arrived on Tuesday afternoon around 1 and were not yet able to check into our room. We had some lunch at Thalassa and then booked some excursions and other...More
Overall our experience here was massively let down by the poor standard of food available. With the many options that they have at the hotel you would think at least one of them would offer a decent quality of food. On our first visit to...More

Honestly you hardly get anything for your money. We were upgraded half way through our holiday because there was an issue with our air con so can compare both. The room is slightly different, (there's a white drape on the bed, the bathroom is open plan but has exactly the same amenities and the room is about a foot in length more but you loose this from the balcony) aside from that the rooms are identical. All amenities in the room are the same, although I would say the wifi was better in the privilege room. You get 10% off spa treatments. There's supposedly a 'preferential seating' in the sea blue restaurant but it made no difference at all when we were there. There are no different areas anywhere on the Royal side for privilege guests. There's a privilege beach bar at the opposite end of the Catalonia Bavaro resort but the 'upgraded' drinks that are advertised here are exactly the same as what's available at the Royal side anyway. The privilege section of the beach is on the family side with children. There's a privilege section at the buffet at the Catalonia Bavaro but honestly the buffet isn't great so I'd be surprised if you end up eating there much. You are also meant to get a late check out room but when flying back to the UK, flights usually leave in the afternoon so it isn't something you would make use of.
Personally I don't think it's worth it but it's up to you if these 'extras' are enough to justify the cost.

"We upgraded to "privilege" and we had a nice room."
