Sadly I only stayed one night and should have stayed two or three nights. It is a place that feels like home everyone seems connected in community together. I felt safe, free to be myself and like I belonged. The room was clean and comfortable and you really don't stay there long in the room as the public space is the living room of the guest house with everyone hanging and chatting together by the pool or hut tub or roof top deck area.

The hospitality was incredible and they really go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and part of the family. I never felt like I was a nuisance and from the moment I stepped in the gate I was made to feel important and like I mattered.

The owners hang out with you and you get to know them. The staff and managers treat you like friends and it is the safest place to be your true authentic self while enjoying the tropical life of Puerto Rico.

I can't say enough wonderful things about this place and I can't wait to return.

Just back from a relaxing 8 night stay. The guesthouse is super relaxed and friendly, with a small pool, spacious hot tub and second floor deck. Staff chef is amazing, with made to order breakfast/brunch + afternoon bbq twice a week, and always vegan /vegetarian options. Don’t miss the awesome guava cream cheese spread/dip!

Great location, beach a block away and even better beach a 10 minute walk. Isla Verde is a 15-20 minute walk, with a more spacious beach and lots of wonderful restaurants. Bus or Uber to Old San Juan or other parts of the city is quick and cheap.

Not sure about those recent negative reviews: our towels were big and fluffy, and daily housekeeping was offered. It’s not a 5-star resort, it’s even better, like staying as a houseguest with a wonderful friend. We met great guys from all over.

The people of San Juan were uniformly friendly and chill. Go with a fun, relaxed attitude and you’ll have a great time.

Stayed 5 nights in this exceptional place. Rob (owner) made me feel at ease for giving a tour on my check - in day. It was informational as he explained to me the san juan area and what things and places i can explore. It was my first time to do solo travel in a caribbean area and this place makes my stay more feel like safe and comfortable. Issy and thig make sure that we have everything we need. Kevin(chef) made a stunning home-cooked brunch on weekend and his hummus is a must try. I stayed in twin room, it was comfortable and budget friendly. If you are lucky to find availability, explore their fabulous rooms because they have different themes which is co cool and it is really a massive room. I met a lot of awesome and beautiful people along the way because of this place. Their BBQ Saturday party is a must try cuz it was an awesome experience. Dont forget to enjoy and relax by the pool and soaked yourself with other guys in their massive jacuzzi. Overall, i cant thank enough Rob and His husband for letting me stay in the wonderful place. This place is worth your money! You wont regret booking this place! Dont forget to book a massage with jonathan😎🏳️‍🌈

We stayed here after a cruise for the weekend. For us it was a mixed experience. First the good. The owner and the staff are super friendly. The location of the hotel is an a gated community which really felt extra secure. The rooms and bathrooms were clean. For the stuff we didn’t care so much for: the place feels very much like a make shift place and honestly feels a bit run down. The breakfast/ brunch was underwhelming (although prepared with love) and served on a bunch of plastic dishes that felt a collection of hand me downs. We skipped that for our second day. The room was not cleaned on Saturday - we just got fresh towels but when we got back from our daily excursion into the city the bed was not made and we just found the towels. Again we feel a bit bad to leave this mixed review. For the price we paid we could have definitely stayed in a nicer place. But closing again on a high note: the staff was very nice and tried to be helpful. It was just not what we expected otherwise.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re glad to hear you appreciated our friendly team, secure location, and cleanliness—those are aspects we work hard to prioritize! That said, we’re truly sorry to hear some elements of your stay didn’t meet your expectations. We aim to provide a cozy and inclusive boutique-style experience, but we understand that our eclectic and homey atmosphere may not resonate with everyone. Your comments about the breakfast and room service are especially helpful, and we’ll be taking a closer look at how we can elevate these areas while maintaining the personalized touches we’re known for. We genuinely value all feedback, as it helps us grow and improve. Thank you for giving us a chance and for ending on a positive note about our staff—it means a lot to us. If you ever decide to visit again, we’d love the opportunity to make your experience a better one. Warm regards, Rob & the Coqui del Mar Guesthouse Team

First, the good things. A nice welcome basket of snacks was provided after we arrived. There's a tasty brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. There's a fridge where you can purchase alcohol instead of running out to a liquor store. There are bikes for guests to use to get around. The staff sends helpful text messages about what is going on around town each day as well. All of those were nice services to have during our stay. All the other guests who were there, seemed to love it. That was not our experience.

The main complaint is that very little attention is being paid to the upkeep of this place.

Everything was dirty. . .from the sand, twigs, and dirt in the milky-water hot tub, to the common-area fridge, to the walkways that should be sprayed down so your feet don't get filthy/muddy walking around the property.

The small (and cold) plunge pool is surrounded by so much furniture, that it leaves very little room to navigate around the pool area, especially if there are people gathering. We didn't find it comfortable at all and spent our days at the beach instead.

Nobody seems to be tending to the plant life, which is plentiful on the property, but most of which is either dead, dying, or neglected as if it is a detail not worth caring about.

Similarly, the flags, curtains and drapes all around the property are faded, weathered and torn as if nobody cares about them either. It shows a lack of upkeep and care.

There's a beautiful mango tree in the yard, and the staff is not picking the fruit off it. On two occasions we were almost hit by falling mangos while sitting near the tree. We asked the staff about falling mangoes, but were flippantly told that it wouldn't really hurt if we got hit by one. (We also wondered why they weren't being picked and used for brunch?)

Our room was basic and we're very glad we didn't pay for one of the more expensive rooms. At the prices they are charging at Coqui Del Mar, they can afford to provide quality, matching towels or matching dishes or anything that hints at cohesion in this place. The quality of the furniture, linens, dishes, etc. is like somebody went to the Marshall's clearance aisle.

We grabbed a couple bikes to ride to the store one day, but got outside the gate and then realized one had a flat tire. We went back inside the gate, back to the hotel, and got a different bike. But this goes back to my point about the lack of upkeep at Coqui Del Mar.

We travel a lot and stay everywhere: campgrounds, Inns, BnB's, and nice resorts. Coqui Del Mar feels more like an expensive hostel than a gay resort. If you're looking for a similar experience to the clothing optional hotels in Palm Springs, Fort Lauderdale, Key West, etc., you should adjust your expectations.

Thank you Ridney for taking the time to leave us a review. We're sorry your experience with us failed to meet your expectations. Even tho we do not advertise ourselves as a 5-star hotel or resort, we are always trying to find ways to improve and offer a better experience to our guests and we can see that we let you down. Our prices can fluctuate greatly and in high season prices can be much different than in our low season, but very competitive to other options in the area. We appreciate your comments on what was lacking and what we could do better. And we agree that a few areas were not meeting our goals of a premier gay guesthouse experience. You'll be happy to know that we ordered a newer, larger jacuzzi with a bigger filter prior to your stay, but it takes a while to get things delivered (Jones Act). It's coming soon! We also are building a roof protection over the jacuzzi to avoid the mangos, leaves, mango flowers, etc from overwhelming the jacuzzi. We are also very happy to have found a passionate gardener that can help us keep the tropical life looking its best. (He also teaches Naked Yoga so that's a nice plus). You must have arrived at the beginning of Mango season but we are definitely pointedly using fresh mangos in our daily breakfasts and brunches (mango smoothies, mango salads, etc). On our vacations we go out of our way to stay at gay-owned properties, partly to learn what can be adapted to our own place, and partly because we enjoy the smaller, more intimate experience offered, plus to support queer-owned businesses. We are constantly working to improve the guest experience. At the same time, we are not a boutique hotel nor a high-end resort. We offer a more personal experience with many free extras and will continue to tweak and refine this. Again, thank you for pointing out some of the areas where we are falling short and for pointing out those areas you enjoyed (the welcome baskets, free vegan-friendly breakfasts, and brunches, the up-to-date queer info, etc). Our entire team is disappointed whenever we disappoint our guests and we all are on board to do better.

Pros:
The owners and the staff are very friendly and helpful.
The dog, Coquito, was the highlight of the B&B.
The beach is a two-minute walk from the B&B.

Cons:
The pictures on the website are deceiving. I’m thinking the room we stayed in hadn’t seen an update since they opened, although the bathroom seems to have been updated somewhat recently. There was one antiquated nightstand that had three draws where you could store your belonging. There was also a makeshift unit attached to the wall where you could store clothing.

We were there for 5 days. Two of those days there was no room service provided. The first day without room service I was told by the staff that they were preparing for two birthday parties. I told them that was not a problem. The preparation for the birthday parties consisted of a cake that they bought at a bakery. The second day they just didn’t show up. By the time we left there were 3 large bags of trash in the bathroom. When I’m paying over $250 a night for a room, I don’t think I should have to dispose of
my own trash.

For the five days we were there we were never provided a towel change. We were also never provided fresh sheets. Normally I wouldn’t require my sheets changed if I’m staying for five days but the floors are tile and tracking sand into the room after spending time at the beach is inevitable. By the time we
left there was as much sand on the sheets as there was on the floor. Finally on our last day I found a broom and swept the room myself. I did bring this to the attention of the owner who offered me a bottle of champagne to compensate us for our discomfort. I declined.

There is a BBQ on Saturday. My partner is a vegetarian so I asked if there would be vegetarian options which I was assured there would be. The first course arrived which consisted of baked beans, mac and cheese and hummus (small portions at best). The second course was pork ribs and brisket. The third course was smoked chicken. My partner walked away hungry.

The community refrigerator…if there is a health department in Puerto Rico someone needs to contact them.

For what we paid at Coqui Del Mar, we expected more.

Hello and sorry to hear that we let you down. Daily housekeeping is required by our staff, and I apologize this did not get done during your stay. Getting overlooked once is not ok, and twice is definitely not acceptable. We have reiterated to our team how important this is to each guest and we have changed how each member tracks their tasks and responsibilities. Our prices are very competitive with other similar hotel offerings, but we offer much more, such as a freshly cooked daily breakfast with vegan options, weekly barbecues, a pool and a jacuzzi, and other conveniences that many others charge for. We understand that getting overlooked two days in a row does not compensate for the other amenities, and we apologize. Please contact me directly at robertvillacres@gmail.com and we can continue the conversation.

Coqui del mar is a nice property conviently located to everything and Rob is a fantastic host. I think the are really trying their hardest. They have a great chef Alexi and a beautiful house pup Coquito. This was our experience... I will say for the same price you can get newly painted and remodeled rooms, and a more consistent level of service...

We came into PR for 10 days to tour the island. We wanted to flank our stay at the coqui del mar in hopes of meeting new and interesting people along the way. Upon arrival, we were walked into a room (our room) that someone else was being allowed to stay in, so we had to postpone an already late check in while they cleaned the room, etc. There is no respect for the quiet hours, and no enforcement either. If you are looking for a place to get away for a little rest and relaxation, this isn't it. All of the guests were laughing the first Sunday because we went from listening to the song "to the class of 1999 on repeat to gospel" it almost became comical - almost. The next weekend we were able to check in seemlessly, but the room had not been cleaned as a toothbrush we had left in the cabinet WAS STILL IN THE CABINET. The next weekend was much better and the crowd was better as well.

Most concerning to the group I was with, was staff was not diligent about wearing masks, did not ask us to show proof of vaccination, and do not enforce the masks in communal areas, so if you are concerned about covid, you might want to keep those things in mind. 15 people waiting for a brunch that is only served 1 hour in a room that is 12x12 doesnt make for the safest environement.

I will say again their cook Alexi was the best part of the trip by far. He made wonderful and healthy breakfasts every day. Also bring your own coffee, because the coffee service is NEVER on time, which was a huge dissapointment for someone who loves to watch the sunrise.

Brian, Sorry that your experience at Coqui del Mar was not the five-star experience that we are accustomed to providing. For the first weekend you visited, inclement weather forced us to abruptly move brunch indoors. We are now actively working to provide additional covered outdoor and indoor brunch opportunities to protect the health and safety of our guests. We apologize for the late-night noise experienced in your room during the weekend. We have quiet hours posted, but understand that a better effort is required to shield our guests in the Tropical Cabana suite, which is located close to our second swimming pool. We are really sorry that the coffee service wasn’t available at sunrise during your stay. A technical malfunction with our coffee machine has since been resolved, and we are once again able to provide strong, full, 100% Puerto Rican coffee early every morning. Regarding the music selection, we’re truly sorry and understand that Dolly Parton — much as we love her — might need a better explanation for some of our brunch guests. We believe cleanliness is the most important part of hospitality and our normal standards were not met. I've met with our cleaning staff and do not expect this oversight again. As of August 16th, Puerto Rico requires all guests and employees of hotels to be vaccinated for COVID-19, and there are additional requirements for staff to wear masks. We’ve implemented new policies and procedures to ensure these mandates are practiced for the foreseeable future. Thank you for acknowledging Alexis - he loves what he does and we are lucky to have him. We always provide at least 2 vegan options and always a tropical/Puerto Rican touch. And of course, the unlimited mimosa brunch included. On behalf of the staff and team at Coqui del Mar, I would like to extend a warm welcome to come back and give us another opportunity to demonstrate our personal 5-star hospitality.

Well this is the easiest 5-star review we’ve written. Rob and V are gems and made our stay exemplary. The vibe they create is a true community. As we’re a little older and need our afternoon siestas, they were able to move us from the pool adjacent room to a quieter room away from the action. They were more than accommodating to our veg*n diets and provided plenty of plant based options at the meals. Made lots of new friends as well that we will definitely see again. We don’t usually return to the same place twice but I can see us coming back here.

• Gay owned/operated, all welcome
• Clothing optional
◦ Have met some wonderful straight naturalists as it is rare to find clothing optional in San Juan
• Variety of room types, some with kitchens
• Weekend brunches are special
• Daily breakfast
• Owners are both trained chefs
◦ Many cookouts
◦ if they suggest a place to eat, don’t hesitate
I’ve been 3 times, and will definitely go back. The owners and staff are excellent It’s not the most elegant place in San Juan, but it is well maintained and they are always changing things up. I’ve gone with friends, and solo. Guests tend to be laid back, and often will get together to go out.
Their tours are excellent.

There are a few, we had the Red Room, it was near the area where they make breakfast. We didn't have any issues with noise. The room is small, but comfortable, complete with 'toys' (we didn't tie each other to the cross, but it was there if the mood strikes). It does have a Bidet as part of the toilet, which we did use. The red room does have an in-room bath.

Hello. As our check out time is 11am and then we need a few hours to properly clean and prepare the room, our check in time is 3pm. Even so, if the room is ready early guests are welcome to it at that time, even 7am. You would just need to check with us the night before. Lastly, we always accommodate luggage drop off. Thank you.
