We were really surprised by this hotel as we didn’t expect such high quality from its 3 star rating. Charming bungalow rooms, direct access to the beautiful beach, swimming pool, cool cocktail bar, amazing buffet restaurant with high quality cuisine (really amazing considering it’s an all-you-can-eat type), staff super helpful and nice. There’s really no negative note from our stay, except perhaps (but I’m making an effort to find some negative points) the fact that they only provide one towel per person in the room —when you would expect a hand towel + a shower towel. And one suggestion: the reception should staff up when big groups arrive (they can anticipate arrivals by checking plane schedules) to speed up the check in process. But besides that small detail, super nice stay, super place, much recommended!

We stayed here for 3 days after our cruise and we lived the hotel. It is on the beach and the grounds (garden) are a paradise with tremendous attention to details. Bungallows are well kept,clean and big. Only thing we did not like:dinner and the fact that we were forced to book dinner when we reserved the room . Please discard this mandatory dinner or change the dinners, this restaurant is the only negative thing about the hotel

Keep in mind it’s a 3 star to start but for us it was great! We stayed in the adult section which gave us access to a second restaurant for supper. The room was good. The grounds are beautiful. We love the breakfast especially, the croissants. The supper buffet was OK. The other restaurant was quite good, but you have to make reservations and order your food in the morning before, the beach is spectacular. Definitely rent a car if you’re willing to drive around because there’s many beaches to see and you can easily get to the grocery store and pick up some basic necessities for very cheap eating is expensive and drinks but buying snacks and water at the grocery store helps a lot. There’s a small shop across the hotel if you don’t have a car. And you can walk down the street to a nice area with restaurants and shops. There’s also another beach further down on the left that was very nice. We visited multiple beaches around the southern part of the island and this beach is one of the best ones. It’s French speaking with many tourists from France. Bring bug spray.

We went to Restaurant Bodlanme at Bambou Hotel. The location right on the beach is very nice. But this is the only nice thing about this place. The food was absolutely horrible and uneatable, we sent the full plates back, there was not even a question why and of course we had to pay for everything. The service was lausy as well, we asked for ice cubes which never came.

Wow...so different from any French Island we have ever been to. Staff are not helpful or friendly at all. Just everyone seems so weird and distant. This is a beautiful sunny and gorgeous island why are the people unfriendly!!!! This is a service industry and there is no service to speak off. DON'T STAY HERE

Hotel Bambou. We stayed at the hotel Bambou in L’anse Mitan for 2 weeks in July.
The Hotel:
The Hotel is about 25 min from Le Lamantin airport and a taxi ride will cost you about 55 Euros. The hotel is a 2 star as stated by the front entrance and is of mostly wooden construction. My opinion is that it is the best hotel in the area for your money. The rooms are mostly little duplex bungalows (there is a 3 story apartment style building as well) laid out in a tropical garden filled with banana trees. There is a restaurant at the sea side besides the small beach. We where allowed a breakfast and a dinner since our stay was purchased as a “Demi- Pension” (more on food later). Not all bungalows are equal, sure they all have air conditioning, small fridge, hair dryer and safe, but some are quite old and in need of repair, at least from the outside. When choosing a room, I would recommend one between # 8 to #16 and/or #21 to 24 and/or 101 to 104, in my opinion. The duplex bungalows do have a door inside that allow you to join both rooms if you are traveling with a larger family etc. The walls are thin and do not have insulation so if your neighbor snores, talks, laughs, moans etc, you will hear them. Night time brings a symphony of noise in the form of little frogs. These frogs start “singing” at about 6:00 pm and stop around 6:00 am. It can be quite unsettling if you are not accustomed. I recommend ear plugs (good ones as not all earplugs are created equal). If you can’t wear earplugs than you should try until you get used to it. Perhaps try them at home for a few nights before traveling. It has been a lifesaver for me in many situations. Guests range from older retired couples to groups of teenagers on summer break. We did see a few small dogs. Why do people need to bring their dogs to hotels, beaches etc. Do your fellow humans a favor and leave the dog at home. Our room had 3 outlets for those who need to recharge their electronics. You will need an adaptor as Martinique has the French outlets. The front desk will greet you with a “Ti Ponch” or a “Planters” Rum Punch on arrival. The front desk speaks some English. Just remember to speak slowly (not loudly!) and avoid using colloquial English slang. We found all the staff friendly and helpful throughout the stay. Most people in Martinique will great you with a “Bonjour” or “Bonsoir”, even strangers.
The lobby is NOT air conditioned and if you are seated in there you can expect a few insect bites (mosquitos and sand flies). The WIFI is supposed to work all over the hotel grounds but I found I could only use it in the lobby. We did have quite a few power outages throughout our stay. If the power is out, be sure to tell the lobby as (of course) you’re A/C and fridge will not work. Our phone never did work although they tried to fix it.
They will offer you a TV remote (for a deposit) but I found I did not need it, (turn TV on by hand) after all there are about 8 French channels that you probably won’t want to watch.
The Beach / Pool
There is a pool and they do supply beach towels. The beach is small and there are about 4 Palapas for shade. There are many beach chairs available. There is a “water sports” shack under a large mango tree and guests are entitled to use pedal-boats, kayaks etc. The only problem with the beach (apart from the scarcity of shade) is that the kid that operates the “water sports” has all his buddy’s there sometimes and they play with a soccer ball. The beach is small and you do risk getting hit by the ball. Management take note! Tell them not to play ball on the beach. They also monopolize one of the rare beach palapas and generally disturb the peace with horse-play. If you drag your beach chair down a bit, you can avoid the disturbance.
Note: Beach, pool and restaurant are accessed through gates. These gates require you to enter a pin number.
The Food.
The food is fresh and cooked in “Creole” style. I found it tasty and satisfying. Beverages will cost you. We drank water at dinner and the water is excellent. By the way, the water in Martinique is potable from any tap. Breakfast is simple, breads, fruits, juices, some cereal, coffee, jam, butter. We bought a sirop from the “8 a 8” (Huit a huit) down the street (point du bout) that you mix with water and that way we always had cold drinks available to us to take to the beach etc.
The Location
The hotel is located in L’anse Mitan across from Fort de France. We found the location excellent as you can simply take the ferry right on the beach next to the hotel (ask lobby for ferry schedule) to get to Fort de France. Ferry costs 6.50 euros for round trip (remember to keep the tickets for the return!). You can probably last about a week without a car, after that you will need to rent a car to get to other parts of the island. If you don’t rent a car then really you should choose some other destination as your holiday. The island has great roads, perhaps the best in the Caribbean. You can walk to Point du Bout where there is a little area of shops, restaurants and a small marina. There is also an Avis rent a car office and 2 other agencies. Shop around for rental car, prices vary. There is parking in front of the hotel as well as around back near the restaurant. Do rent a car! You need to see the rum distilleries, the Rocher du Diamant etc. You will not appreciate Martinique without a rental car.
Conclusion
Martinique is a beautiful island. The flora and fauna are amazing! I was disappointed in the fact that the tourism industry is not very developed. 98 % of the tourists come from France. Where is everyone else? Yes it is expensive and there is much better value available elsewhere in the Caribbean. Martinique need to promote more (not just to the French) and develop more hotels (not just French owned ones!). Attract more international tourists and franchises this will bring down the prices and break the French monopoly. Remind me again why they have the Euro in Martinique????
Would we go again? Yes, if the price is right.

We ended up at the Hotel Bambou when our reservations at another place in Anse Mitan fell through. We stayed in their bungalows, which are like something out of Munchkinland--little streets of cottages with weird roof angles and all knotty pine inside. Where do they get knotty pine in the Caribbean??
The place was full of French tourists--old and young, families, honeymooners, retired folk. We were literally the only Americans in the place. It was not a chichi crowd, just regular folks on holiday.
Everyone was lovely to us and we had a blast, especially at the poolside punch party. They know how to make some potent Planter's Punch!!

I was hesitant on my arrival as the reviews posted to TripAdvisor were varied - and while my review will be comprehensive - the short version is this place it totally acceptable - the grounds are spotless! The staff (for the most part) are friendly and helpful. Our bedding was comfortable. Our dining experience was acceptable. It was not gourmet but it was not inedible. the Dinners were varied and delightful. Breakfast was basic. Being near the public beach has it's pros and cons - it was difficult the first day to determine which sun loungers were for BAMBOU and which were owned by the Jetski operator next door. The close proximity to the ferry is a bonus if you plan to go to Fort de France- but it is not really a nuisance if you dont plan on using it. There is an unpaved parking lot in between the New section and the original building. A Small market across the street can cover all you basics - beer/wine/liquor/snacks. And the location cant be beat - a short walk to Creole Village. I recommend Bambou - and now for the more indepth review - keep reading.
We stayed here for 10 days for my birthday - we had the meal plan (breakfast and dinner) -we had the Jr Suite in the new section - it was LOVELY - the private pool was a treat as there were no small children in this area- you had a view of the beach and your room was only a stone's throw away. We had friends who were staying in the bungalows in the 400 area and they were quaint rooms with all the amenities. The benefit to the suite is the private pool, a complimentary bottle of water, larger bathroom and a large balcony. To enter the "new area" your keycard must be properly validated. There is a beach entrance from the private pool area - so you do not have to walk back through to the other side of the resort. We had room 712 - top floor on the end near the pool. SO our Sunset views were stupendous. The kingsize bed was conformtable albeit a little low. the room was outfitted with a TV, safe, two sitting chairs - two nightstands and one large "dresser". there was a coffee pot with complimentary coffee/tea pods, a MIni Fridge and an iron/Ironing board. The bathroom had double sink vanity - rain showerhead - was equipped with a hair dryer. my only room criticism - is there is no real dresser for your clothing...and the closet area has no door. The last point iks the ice machine - there is no ice machine in the new section -so you must walk to the main part of the resort near reception. this is not earth shattering but it would be nice to have an ice machine in the new section.
The Private pool was delightful and there is an outdoor shower for rinsing off any sand from the beach. There are a limited number of sunloungers at the pool and a handful of umbrella's so be mindful if you are not going to be utilizing this area all day - dont leave your personal items there to monopolize the seating/availability. The pool is not heated but is refreshing with a beach view. At night the pool has lights that change color - so it's very inviting for sunset and after hours time. (very romantic). My only criticism of the pool is limited seating- and the gated fencing with the "dolphin" motif which provides security for this section of the resort. I think it would be prettier with just the fencing and not the dolphin motif. it would provide a clearer view of Fort De France and the sea. Reception - we arrived later in the evening and the front desk staff were very friendly and inviting. They advised that dinner was served until 10 and provided us with instructions on how to get to our room. the Lobby was clean and "tropical theme". While I speak French - my partner did not - but he had few issues communicating with the staff at reception. They are had a strong command of English. We were issued Beach towels for the week and told that towels could be exhchanged Monday/Wed and Friday. The ice machine and laundry service is near the front desk. The Wifi works best in the lobby - we had some difficulty utilizing it in our room - but that could be attributed to our VPN requirements for work.
The dining experience. AS noted above Breakfast was pretty basic - buffett style- Scrambled eggs, Scrambled eggs w Ham, Bacon, Sausage, baked goods, yogurt, cheese slices, ham slices - fresh fruit - cereal and coffee. Surpisingly - there is complimentary rum in a wooden keg available in the AM! There are two coffee machines - that make Cafe Au Lait, Capuccino, coffee long and Tea - The baked goods are outstanding - the Bread and the Chocolate croissants - yes we gained some weight indulging in these every day. They have an incedible Habanero pepper sauce out for breakfast and dinner that is to die for if youi like hot stuff (and I do!!), The Dinner options are listed each day on a wall outside the lobby - but overall the dinner's are fine - there is an assortment of Hot food items - salad options - MORE BREAD!! and a dessert station. We had no issues finding something we liked to eat each night. There is a Live lobster tank to purchase lobster by the Kilo - we did not partake -as we are scuba divers and well....leave the lobster alone :-) There is entertainment at night that is really quite delightful. The view of the beach from the restaurant is lovely as well. On the eve of my BDAY my boyfriend had arranged for my friends and I to have CHampagne and a cake - the hotel arrange for a very cute cake - please refer to pics. Criticism of the dining experience. Service can be a challenge - in the sense of getting a server to bring you a pitcher of water or ordering a cocktail or wine with dinner. There is a Bar - so we ordered our own until one evening we were told there were servers. The Coffee/tea machines are covered at night so if you want coffee or tea - you have to flag down a server and there is an associated cost. My biggest disappointment - dont try to bring anything back to your room - the serving staff will literally chase you and take the food out of your hand. I tried to take a croissant and a banana as a snack after a dive and took it as I was walking out - I was chased down by the restaurant reception desk and chastised for taking the item - THERE IS A SIGN indicating you cannot take items - but in truth I assume that meant PLATES of food - not a croissant or a Banana. this just came as a shock to me - AND there are no coffee cups to take coffee to go - as a "northerner" we like our coffee... LOCATION - the location was spot on for our purposes - we utlized the Ferry one day - and walked to Creole Village a number of times - we became regulars at the market across the street because the price for French wine was so reasonable we spoiled ourselves - and the meat and cheese selections are the market are decent. They also sell rottisserie chickens - so we packed a few picnic lunches as I noted we are divers and ate lunch between dives. We had no issue with mosquitos - My overall experience was wonderful - if we return to Martinque we would definately stay at Bambou - and we would definately stay in the Suites. We likely would NOT participate in the meal plan again since there are so many Patisseries at which to puchase a croissant or bread and cheese. And I must lastly note that my experience was totally enhanced by the precense of the most beautiful cat - I dont know if this cat is owned by the staff or a nearby family - but this little guy was so sweet and gentle and a number of the other guests were enjoying his presence. I didnt see any bugs or vermin and cats help with that maintenance!!!! I would return just to see this little guy!!

Hotel Bambou. Our second trip!! Be sure to read my the previous report from last year as it contains a greater overview of the trip.
We stayed at the hotel Bambou in L’anse Mitan for 2 weeks in July 2012 I reserved a room a few months ahead (see recommended room location in my other review). Calling Hotel Bambou from overseas will be an exercise in patience! They seem to place the number “0” in front of the phone number and the whole lot is confusing. You will need an operator to help and sometimes they don’t know. I managed to get a call through after several tries. Patience: Calling the front desk will not help you make a reservation. They will tell you to call the reservation number!!?? All manner of transactions seem to be overly complicated all over the island. This is a result of the French system. They removed some of the old shacks (rooms) in the centre of the compound and are now building several new duplex bungalows. Actually, all the rooms on the main compound are duplex
Rooms: The room was fine. We had room #10 great location. Clean and comfortable. Your AC will be off when you get your room so you will have to be patient as it will take about half hour for the room to cool. We found 25 degrees C to be a sufficiently cool setting (especially when it is 35 degrees outside!). The beds are a bit on the firm side but no complaints. As mentioned before, the frogs start to sing at about 6:20 pm and do not stop until 6:00 am. It will take a few nights to get used to. I always travel with earplugs so it did not bother me one bit.
Food The food is generally good. The package we had (demi- pension) entitled us to breakfast and dinner. The food is served in buffet style and features different dishes every night. I am not a picky eater and was able to find something satisfying every night. Local dishes as well as local deserts (like flan au coco) tend to be featured. I would have liked to see more local fruits during the breakfast buffet. Especially when I see that the local markets are full of exotic local fruits. You would think that the hotel would make sure that it had local fruits every day. Drinks must be purchased separately. The water is fantastic and is served in pitchers. By the way the water is potable in the hotel room and by extension, water is potable in most places on the island.
Bugs? The rooms are not sealed tightly. There are gaps under the doors etc so some insects may get in. If you leave your room door open, the chances are that some insects will fly in. That being said there were (almost) no mosquitoes during the time we were there (July). If there are any, they tend to come out at sunset. There is a great mosquito repellent sold across the street, see the section below regarding the Shops / Convenience store.
LOBBY: The lobby is open so there is no a/c. If you sit in the small booths in the lobby, you will get bit at any time of the day or night by tiny sand flies or “no-see-ums”. They do have a computer terminal (with a European key-board) there with internet connection (the lobby also has WIFI).
Walk / Hike: You can walk to the Point du Bout to the marina and a couple of nice swimming coves. There are also a few shops and rental car places there. You can walk through the bush and get to Anse a l’ane. The walk takes Half an hour. Use google maps to see the path. Anse a l’ane has nice beach-side bistros where you can rest, drink and eat after your hike.
Shops / Convenience store. When you stand at the lobby entrance and look towards the street you can see two shops. If the doors are open, so are the shops. You can see the doors from the lobby. One is located straight ahead and the other is to the left 2 buildings over where it says something like ” Fish restaurant” I believe. The one straight ahead has some souvenirs, rum, postcards, some toiletries and mosquito repellent. I purchased a small bottle of this repellent that claims to be a Eau de cologne as well!! It comes in a clear glass spray bottle and I must say it came in handy. The store to the left (fish restaurant) has more items in it. Again rum, cold drinks, pop, coffee, etc. It is more of a real convenience store. Hours of operation?? Martinique has funny French hours so the joke for us was that the hours are simple, whenever you need the service it is closed. I went in the morning or late in the day and found them open.
Beach The beach is small and the water quality is fair to good when compared to other caribbean islands. The few palapas on the beach are always busy, so unless you have one of these, there is no shade. The small beach can by quite busy as people come from town for some beach time. Chairs are there for the use of guests so if you cannot find one, ask the people at the water sports shack and they will get you a reclining beach chair right away. There is a small snack bar on the beach beside the water sports. Some young locals play football soccer on the small beach (annoying) so you run the risk of getting hit by a ball. This has not changed from last year. Again perhaps management can forbid football in front of the hotel so tourists can sun in peace.
Conclusion: Be sure to reserve your room. A car is essential for getting around and seeing the beautiful island and getting the most out of your holiday. Ferry boat that docks right next to the hotel is super handy for seeing the capital city across the bay. There are not many English speaking tourists on the island. As mentioned in my other report, the tourist infrastructure is 30 years behind. Some may find this as an attraction. The island is modern, with shopping malls and high end establishments available but none of the international franchises available. The island is strictly “franco-centric” to a fault. The French flag flies everywhere even though the island has its own flag! The island is expensive and they use the Euro. (The EURO!!! What the…?!). Will we go back? Perhaps in a few years. But the island has a long way to go (infrastructure) if it wants to capitalize on a modern, world class, tourist industry.

I was not actually staying at the Hotel Bambou but was in Anse Mitan for 6 weeks and observed it. It was during October/November 2002 and definitely off season. Except for the hotels on Point du Bout business appeared pretty dead. And then there was the Hotel Bambou. People were being bused in there continuously, mainly middle aged or older French. And they all seemed to be having such a great time. They were out on the beach early in the morning and late at night, they could be heard talking and laughing in the restaurant in the evening. Even now, everytime I think of the place I smile.

There are standard rooms and bungallows and superior ones. Standard may be in the main building (gran Kay, unrenotaved) or bungallows in the garden.
