As others have noted, it you like big, fancy all-inclusives, the Boiled Frog probably isn't for you. But if you like a homey atmosphere in a quiet location at the end of a gorgeous, expanse of beach with relaxed hosts who offer everything from home-cooked meals to information to make your stay wonderful, you'll likely enjoy the Boiled Frog. I spent 8 nights here while attending a conference in Gros Islet and want to take my husband back for a vacation sometime soon. After travelling for almost 3 months, the home-cooked meals were a treat, the freedom to eat breakfast whenever I was ready was so welcome, and the sunsets with a glass of wine, chatting with very friendly hosts was the perfect end to another day in paradise. The wifi was the best I'd had in 3 months, plus there were electrical outlets to charge laptops, tablets etc on the veranda. I only wish I'd had more time to chill in a hammock reading a book.

CANADIANS Danielle and Steve Unruh felt they were being boiled alive in their jobs as health and safety advisors to the oil industry.

When they sent each other drawings of their ideal place to live, both doodles depicted a house by the sea fringed by palm trees.

The light bulb moment illuminated the way to the pair establishing the aptly-named Boiled Frog Guesthouse, near Castries, on sunny St Lucia.

For many people, holidaying in the Caribbean means an all-inclusive resort with all the associated pampering you fancy.

What Danielle and Steve offer Is a bed and breakfast by the sea, with the option of dining with them and their family at night should you wish.

Arriving at the Boiled Frog feels more like arriving at a friend’s home.

Danielle and Steve greet you with a smile and introduce you to sons Alex, Sasha, little smasher Kieron and Zeus the friendly dog.

You walk, via the sprawling ocean-facing deck, to either a self-contained cottage or one of two large bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.

You grab a beer already chilling in the fridge, you hear the waves swooshing on the sand, see a huge illuminated cruise ship crawling by on the horizon and the relaxation begins.

We spent what must be one of the laziest two weeks of our lives at the Frog, and we loved it.

Mostly all we did was take long beach walks alongside the clean, crashing surf of Choc Bay, throw down the sarongs, lap up the 30C heat and cool off in the waves.

The only decisions were whether we turned left or right in the morning, which book to read next, or if we could have a private skinny dip, which was normally “oh yes”.

Having flown all that way from the UK, we did hop on one of the abundant island minibuses and do the tourist bit to the marina and fort at Rodney Bay, as well as to Soufriere in the shadow of the islands famous Piton twin peaks.

We also took in scenic Marigot Bay, marvelling of the hilltop holiday homes belonging to the likes of Oprah Winfrey and boxing champ George Foreman.

But we really were lazy on this trip, which was designed to be a battery charge away from an England on the cusp of another chill winter.

We breakfasted around 7am, helping ourselves to fresh coffee, juice, muesli and toast.

We sometimes had family dinners and enjoyed lovely homemade bread, pasta, Frog burgers, steak and lobster (lobster which two local spear fisherman had caught that very day).

Sometimes we walked the 15 minutes along a busy main road to dine at the Wharf bar and restaurant , where owner’s daughter Liza bent over backwards to make us feel at home and kept to cold beers coming with gusto.

And that was about it.

Plenty of people told us to keep out wits about us for theft, but plenty of people strolled by us on our deserted stretch of beach and every one was polite and civil.

It is a fact of life that you have to keep your wits about you everywhere in the world, even your home town.

Frog gardener Sylvester, who came with the property when it was bought, did appear with a machete now and again – in order to offer us coconuts from the palm tree or golden apples which we chomped on with thanks.

All in all we had restful days capped by interesting chats during family dinners or down at the pub.

The room was clean, the food was great, and hosts Danielle and Steve were on hand to solve the slightest problem should it arise.

Danielle’s parents, Dave and Barbara, turned up for Christmas and enriched the family scene.

Even Zeus the dog smiled for a photo, almost.

We would thoroughly recommend the Boiled Frog to any fellow traveller who feels they are getting a bit boiled by life’s pressures, and fancies the same kind of break.

It you stay there, when the interested locals ask you which hotel you are staying at, you will undoubtedly tell them the same as we did: “We aren’t in a hotel, we are staying with friends.”

Having searched the whole of the Caribbean on Trip Advisor for a beach-front B&B with wifi and great reviews, we came to the Boiled Frog and were not disappointed. We originally expressed an interest in the Cottage with its own kitchen but it was booked out so we had the Stew instead and were well pleased. We swapped the reduced room price for allowing Danielle to cook for us most evenings and decided that that was the much better and lazier option!

Her menus are now published for the week ahead and you can eat with her and her family and any other interested guests up to 5 nights a week if you wish. The food is just a main course served at 6.30pm but is excellent quality, often with seconds and wine is there for you to help yourself to as well, all for under $20US a head.

The Stew has a large low window behind the bed-head so you can draw the curtains in the morning and lie there watching the gentle waves lap the shore under the coconut trees. The room is very spacious and the bed enormous. Fridge and bottle-opener provided but bring your own hair drier.

You have a room key and also a key that fits the padlocks on all the gates around the property. There is a tall perimeter fence and full height gates into the building. Outside the bedrooms is a large covered veranda with tables, chairs, hammocks etc where you can spend your days/evenings and meals are served. Ask Danielle to mix you up a two litre container of rum punch to keep in your fridge for pre-supper drinks etc. She will do it for not much more than the cost of the ingredients.

Breakfast is a help-yourself affair whenever you like from the main fridge out in the veranda, typically ham, cheese, fruit and cereals with breads and bagels, coffee and various fruit juices.

Just below the veranda is a lawn with a gate leading straight out onto the beach. It is rocky at this point so folks normally turn left or right to get to sandy sections. There are reefs generally around so best to come with swimming shoes anyway just to be sure. The beaches to the left and right both have overhanging trees that provide shade from the sun if you wish. People clean the beaches at least weekly. A few locals do walk along the beach and sometimes come for a swim but most of the time you are likely to have it to yourselves.

What to do? The location is on the main road just north of Castries, on the 1A bus route. There is a supermarket 3 mins away just over the road and the Wharf restaurant 15 mins walk up the road for the nights you want to eat out. 10mins beyond that is the modern Megaplex 8 cinema showing all the latest films for a cheap entrance price. Listings are on the internet. Take the bus down into Castries or north, but don’t bother with Rodney Bay which is a waste of time. One small overpriced mall and no easy access to the waterside marina.

Go to the end of the bus line to Gros Inlet on a Friday night for street food and drink. If you get there early it can look a bit run-down and intimidating, but it gets more lively and full of tourists from 7.30 onwards.

In summary, if you want something different from and way way cheaper than an expensive resort hotel and you like beach space and travelling on local buses, then the Boiled Frog is for you. Book early though!

Let me start off by saying that all the other ratings on this site are entirely accurate. Danielle and Steve are fantastic hosts, couldn't have been more welcoming, and are great ambassadors to St. Lucia. They also cook delicious dinners!! They were extremely organized in preparing for our arrival and were great in terms of communication prior to arrival. Once we were there, they had great suggestions for places to go and really went the extra mile to help us find off the beaten path beaches and make dinner reservations.
The guesthouse was very comfortable with a kitchen, living area, air conditioned bedroom and bathroom, and great for a couple. We stayed for 8 nights total.

We did however have some very serious issues while staying here that I think are only fair to present to other travelers so that people may make informed decisions about where they're staying. While we were staying at the cottage, it was broken into in the middle of the night. The property is adjacent to a public beach and has a wire fence up with no additional security (barbed wire, motion detector light, etc.) Several large men hopped the fence and we woke up to a loud bang one night as they broke the iron security gate in the cottage. Next thing we knew they were in the living room robbing our place. It was actually terrifying because there was no escape from the bedroom, and if they had been armed or wanted to they could have easily come through the bedroom door and killed us. Luckily my fiancee was able to scare them off after they stole some electronics from the living room and my cash from my wallet. We feel so fortunate that nothing worse happened because it easily could have.

We woke up Danielle and Steve and they were very sympathetic, and even offered us a machete to keep at our bedside, but what was troubling was that they told us that this was not the first time robbers had hopped the fence. It was the first time anyone had broken into the guesthouse; in the other incident things were stolen from their yard. I was surprised to hear they hadn't done anything to beef up their security since that event. As kind and sympathetic as they were about the incident, when it came time to check out, we weren't even offered a discount. I had to ask to be compensated for a night's stay and the $120 that had been stolen from me, which I also found surprising.

Overall, I would not stay in this property again because of the security issues. I am well aware that there are security issues throughout St. Lucia, but there are things that business owners can do to prevent incidents such as this from happening. I know that Steve and Danielle are working on this now, but I only feel it's right to let other travelers know so that they can make an educated decision.

We have just returned to the UK after spending 2 weeks being spoilt rotten by Danielle & Steve at the Boiled Frog. We arrived as guests & departed as friends.

The cottage is basic but is clean & comfortable. It's great being able to eat breakfast alone with the provisions provided in the fridge. We dined daily seated under the gazebo at the end of the garden overlooking the beautiful, deserted beach. Access to the beach is direct from the garden & one is able to walk all the way to Castries if so desired. If that is too much exercise then the regular 1A bus service runs from the end of the drive! The well stocked super market is a 2 minutes walk.

We hired a car for most of our stay & found it very useful for going out for dinner in the evening & for exploring this beautiful island. However, 5 nights a week D cooks & believe me it is worth staying in to enjoy her varied & delicious meals. She is a really fantastic chef & we enjoyed many evenings in her & Steve's company chatting over a few glasses of wine.

Re the previous report about security issues, we had no worries at all. Since the break in Steve has installed additional lighting to act as a deterrent, so much so that we had to ask for darker curtains!! If you lock the doors properly then there is no way to enter the cottage illegally so I reckon that the previous guests were careless.

We can't recommend the Frog highly enough. D & Steve really are the most wonderful friendly hosts & went the extra mile to make us feel very much part of their lovely family.

We'll be back!

My husband and I spent the first part of our Honeymoon here. We couldn't have asked for anything more. The owners organised a taxi there for us and had the fridge filled with drinks for our arrival. The location is fantastic- right on the beach with a great terrace and garden for lounging in hammocks and a supermarket and restaurant/bar in easy walking distance, the town of Castries a bit more of a walk. Danielle, Steve and the boys make you very welcome and Danielle is a fantastic cook. We had 3 lovely meals there- even including both meat and vegan options to suit us both! Excellent value for money too. We hope to return one day!

If your concept of a perfect vacation is tourist packed beaches, the sound of sea-doos buzzing off shore all day long, and staying in a multiplex condo unit housing 500 other travellers which required you to remortgage your house in order to afford, then The Boiled Frog is not for you. The Boiled Frog is a place you go to feel at home with friends and family offering all you need for a fabulous vacation: start your day off with fresh coffee or tea and a walk along the beach (usually comes with "Good Mornings" from a few locals also enjoying a morning walk); next, returning to have a breakfast of island fruit, yogurt, bagels, cereal, etc, etc...your choice; after breakfast you pack your day bag to head off on an excursion which Danielle or Steve has helped you book for and usually are available to drive you to the rendezvous point; return at the end of the day for a shower-off and maybe a second beach-walk at sunset, after which you either join the family for an amazing dinner (Celiac friendly and soooo good!) or head off to another establishment (so easy to access) for good eats; then finally when your evening is done and the lights are turn off, you fall asleep (in your clean, spacious, and cool room) to the sound of tree frogs and surf. Basically, The Boiled Frog allows you to enjoy all of what St. Lucia has to offer, while at the end of the day escaping to a serene hideaway in paradise. Whether a solo traveller like myself or travelling with companions, The Boiled Frog will give you the true escape that vacations are meant to provide. So I ask, why would you stay anywhere else?

There is not much I can add to the positive comments already left on this site, except to echo them. Staying at the Boiled Frog really is like staying with family or friends: I have never been at a hotel or guesthouse like it. The location is convenient, and the hosts very friendly and welcoming, and always ready with advice on how to use the local buses, where to go, what to do etc.

I should also mention the option (on most evenings) of eating dinner with the family, prepared by Danielle. These were uniformly excellent, in fact probably the best cooking we had on the island (and that includes the impressive Wharf restaurant, 10 minutes walk up the road). Add to that, the very reasonable charges for room (and a small extra for dinner) and it all adds up to amazing value. The only problem with people wanting to stay there will be the small number of guests that they can take. My advice is to consider advance booking if you want to stay there from now on, given the high ratings it is getting on Tripadvisor.

We have just done a three-island tour and after reading all the reviews chose the Boiled Frog for our stay in St Lucia. We have had a great time at the three islands we stayed in but it was in the Boiled Frog that we really relaxed and chilled out.
Our hosts Danielle and Steve were brutally honest about the pros and cons in St Lucia, but we found nothing but kindness from all the people we meet.
I would recommend St Lucia and especially the Boiled Frog to all travellers who like a bit of adventure.
Thank you Danielle and Steve for a fantastic week.

Thanks to Danielle, Steve, and the boys our move to Saint Lucia was painless. We thought about Saint Lucia but had almost ruled it out due to not being able to find much on day to day living. We received an email and Danielle answered numerous questions and concerns. We booked our week and the Boiled Frog was everything we could ask for.. The Boiled Frog is close to everything, situated on the beach front, no crowds. You can choose to dine with the family Danielle is a fantastic cook . We have now been on island for two months and enjoying retirement. Thanks again for making our dream come true.

"I don't really think you could go wrong with any of the rooms. The Cottage is ideal if you want complete independence with its kitchen, living room and bedroom. The Reef is in between the kitchen and the other room (I forget the name) but I never heard any noise coming from either. The third room has a south-facing window that overlooks the grounds, but with air conditioning would still be comfortable. There are three family dogs on the property, but Danielle and Steve are conscientious about keeping them away from visitors if they are not comfortable with the animals - they are well behaved and fun to watch wrestling and playing with each other."
