SPRING LAKE

We went into this blind as a last-minute destination but liked the idea of a hotel in the middle of Soufriere, St. Lucia, a tiny fishing village of roughly 7,000. The hotel itself was very quiet, even though retail was on the first two floors. There were a total of five flights of stairs to get to the rooms at the top. The rooms were average (but clean) but the view was spectacular. Well worth the extra $15 or so a night extra over the street side. Water pressure was great in the shower. We had a tiny fridge and a microwave. Only one set of dishes for a room with 2 double beds though. As usual, when traveling outside the U.S., there were no handtowels or wash clothes so bring your own!

The hotel staff are nothing but exceptional. So friendly and helpful.
Although showing its age, the hotel is clean and safe.
There is LIMITED FREE PARKING on the street and the ATM is not on site (3 ATM within a 1 minute walk).
The rooms are all on the 4th floor and there is no elevator so if you have mobility issues, this wont be the hotel for you

Event though I am an Austrian, I write in English language, since German language is useless in St. Lucia and the automatic translation is usually not easy to understand.

The hotel is situated one block away from the waterfront, and opposite a little park with a very nice old church. The rooms are on the second floor of the building, there is no escalator. You get help carrying your luggage upstairs. The lady at the reception desk was very friendly, explained the hotel and a bit of the vicinity. My room, facing to the church side, was very large, to twin beds, a balcony, TV, bathroom was ok.

There are restaurants and bars in the close vicinity, offering breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks. The backdraw of this central location is that during night once in a while some stoned people yell to one another. Walk to a nice beach about 20 min or go with a snorkeling tour. There is no bike rental anymore, I think nobody wants to climb up roads up to 20% steep. Travelling by bus very cheap, the bus station is just next to the church, the buses usually start when filled up, I always had good luck. Travelling to Castries is about 1-1:15 h, to the Hevanorra international airport about 1:30.

I kicked this hotel for the location alone. There are many nehative reviews but I took the chance. The hotel is aged but it was spotless when I was there. The big 'hiccup' was that they advertise 18 rooms spread over 4 floors. The truth is all the rooms are on the 4th floor and there is NO ELEVATOR. If you have mobility issues, this is not the hotel for you!
Other than that, everything worked, staff were amazingly friendly (and helpful) and I would not hesitate to return.
After hours, there is security for the hotel and room access is restricted to main stairs only

This hotel is one on the worst on the planet. I would never recommend it. The hotel is dirty smells terrible. Stayed 9 days there. No hot water, no elevator. Management kept making excuses about the hot water. The floors looked like it hadn’t been mopped in years. Do yourselves a favor. Stay away from that place. They won’t even consider a partial refund despite the inconvenience. No security the main door stayed open so anyone can come up to the floor. My daughter saw a homeless man trying to open doors. There are beautiful places to stay in Soufriere but that is definitely not one of them.

The Hotel has two fronts, one two the sea and a huge air conditioning for KFC directly under your window, terrible noise from 8 am to 1 am. We moved two the other front, view two the church, but noise was even heavier: the bells of the church ring at 5 am for 10 minutes, than beginns the traffic, cars are using their horns... We did'nt sleep much there.

Loved it there !!! It was just perfect! My husband and I wanted to visit the site attractions in the south so we decided to search for hotel that is not pricey and we came across this hotel. We thought we’d give it a try and boy were we pleased. From a warming welcome to a great spacious room that is so clean I can sleep on the floor lol which was a plus plus for my husband and I. We got the downtown view which is so beautiful. On a morning we would have breakfast in the private balcony overlooking the hills , it was so refreshing. We visited the Diamond waterfalls which is like 15 minutes away . We also visited the drive in volcano, piton waterfalls, sugar beach , Tet Paul nature trail and Gros piton. All of which is near the hotel. You simply take a bus which is a right next to the hotel to visit these site attractions. This hotel is basically in the heart of everything. Drugstores, supermarkets, bakeries , retail stores all a few steps away! The staff at the downtown hotel is very friendly and professional; they attended to all our needs. I definitely enjoyed the south of the island better than the north. My husband and I are already planning to here again next year ! It was definitely an amazing trip!

The Downtown is literally in the heart of Soufriere. The staff is very accommodating, kind, thoughtful, and friendly. It feels more like a Bed and Breakfast than a hotel. We had the option of upgrading to an ocean view but stuck with our first choice of city view and had the perfect balcony view of the town square. It was fantastic to sit and watch the city start and end their days from there. Each room had a balcony, microwave, television, electric kettle, a mini fridge, cups, plates, silverware, and air conditioning unit. If you are looking for an inexpensive way to truly see the town, this is it. You are a 5-10 minute walk from the closest sandy beach, a 10-15 minute walk to the famous Botanical Gardens and Diamond Falls, and right next to the piers and water front. I highly recommend it!

++ Excellent location (bus stop, supermarket, beach, nightlife, restaurants)
+ Nice View from room (ocean view given)
+ Large room
+ Multiple English T.V channels
+ Reception staff gave good directions

-- No Safe in room. Wallet missing it would seem after visiting hotel (Did not take it out with me), not certain if hotel is responsible but they did not let me check the CCTV myself. Staff also called us at 8 in the evening to see if we are there...they claim this was a security check but the next night they didn't do this. All our previous places we stayed with were, friends and they confirm we didn't leave it there.
-No Do Not Disturb Sign
-No Please Clean Sign

Response from travel041, Manager at The Downtown Hotel
Responded Jan 13, 2016
Whilst we appreciate constructive criticism, we do not take kindly to reviews which are malicious. We were informed of the incident and we attended to it immediately. We have never experienced any loss of items in our seven years of service. We have cameras on each floor and a security on the premises 24/7. Management thoroughly checked the cameras on three occasions in which we discovered that no one entered your room. Our receptionist informed us that you left the room after she called to ensure that your needs were met before she left. Since we do not have nightly room service and the extra keys are kept in a safe in the main office , no one would have access to your room which you were informed. Management thoroughly searched your room for any signs of forced entry in which there were none. We urged you to retrace your steps to the places you went and we even offered to visit these places to find out if your wallet was left on the property. When asked where you visited the night in question , you were unable to provide a response. You then informed management that you were with some friends that night. Since there were no signs of forced entry , no one had access to your room , it is therefore not management 's fault if you happen to lose any items outside of the property. However, despite this, we will always try our best to help in any way that we can. Upon follow up, you expressed that you friends informed you that you did not leave the wallet in their company. This therefore implies that you were not sure if you left the wallet in your room to begin with. We strive to ensure that the needs of our guests are met and exceeded , this is why we over and beyond to guarantee this. Our receptionist normally calls before she leaves to check if anyone needs any anything. Since you expressed your displeasure with being called, she decided not to call. Normally, when guests do not want any room service or do not want to be disturbed they either write a note on the cards given which are placed in the bag on the door or they call reception. There were options provided to you which you did not utilize. Secondly, all room amenities were provided such as cutlery, towels, shower gel etc. It is very disappointing when a guest expressed displeasure in their stay , which is why we strive to do better and to improve our services. However, when the displeasure expressed is clearly malicious, we make it a point to ensure that it is not repeated and will not be tolerated as it is a reflection on our image.

Well. You get what you pay for. We had to call someone to change the ac temperature. They didn't have remotes for all rooms.

Do you want a fridge in your room? Yes please, do you have one? No.

Someone wrote that you should request a room in the back because of the noisy street. The closest bar behind the hotel has a wall of speakers so that didn't help.

Friendly staff!

Thank you for taking time out to inform us of your stay at The Downtown Hotel! It is very displeasing to know that you did not enjoy your stay. Upon arrival, you requested that you would like a fridge in your room , you were informed that the one that was suppose to be placed in your room was faulty and so had to be removed to be fixed. However, since we were fully booked at the time , you would be receiving one the following day. You expressed that this would be fine but checked out the very next day. Notwithstanding this, we do apologize for the inconvenience caused as a result. The Sea/Piton view is relatively quiet as expressed by majority of our guests. Occasionally on weekends, there are bar functions, however, it does not go on all night. Most of our guests have not expressed an issue with this as they enjoy mixing with the locals and experiencing the culture of Soufriere. However, we understand that people are different and so would require different needs and wants. Although our location is superb and convenient since are a few steps away from everything , many people would enjoy all its perks. Our staff is world renowned for their superb hospitality and professionalism. We are pleased that we were able to make you feel welcome and at home despite your other grievances. We again apologize for inconvenience. The Downtown Hotel aims to meet and exceed needs and wants of every guest, therefore we will look into measures to ensure that with respect to this aspect , every guests stay is improved.

I booked through expedia or any 3rd party travel website. I would go to bookings . com expedia etc and put downtown soufriere and check to see competitive pricing.

It would probably be around $20 (maybe less if you can sweet talk them). Haggling is the real deal there. I also recommend Anse Mamin, a beach north of Anse Chasnet. Take a car to Anse Chasnet and walk all the way to the other end of the beach where you'll see a walkway around the cliff. Follow that walkway to the best beach you'll ever visit. Hardly anyone there and the best burgers!

It's over an hour's trip. We'd hired a car in Rodney Bay so used that to get back to the airport. The most economical way is probably by bus, but if you have luggage you will have a problem as the buses are only mini van sized and are invariably full. I'm not sure if they run from inside the airport grounds. A taxi will be quite a lot of money, not sure how much, but to Rodney Bay it's around 80USD for the same time / distance. When you get to Soufriere there are mini vans running around but don't appear to keep to a timetable and seem to leave when they have passengers. A taxi to some of the more outlying resorts around Soufriere can cost around 50 US from the town centre.

Yes, I think it is called Hummingbird Beach. The snorkeling there isn't that exciting, but fine for swimming and lounging on a beach - great view of the Pitons.

My suggestion would be to grab a cab to these resorts I'm not familiar with the hotels you refer to, but most are up n he hills and away from the downtown, maybe a fifteen or twenty minute cab ride.
