We just returned from a week at the Sugar Beach Condos in St. Croix USVI. The place was very nice.
The view from the room could not be beat. We had read some negative reviews of this location (near the projects, seagrass on the beach, etc.) There is seagrass, but they pick it up off the beach every day. We swam and snorkeled right off the beach. We also went to other beaches, (notably Cane Bay,Sandy Point and Buck Island) but if you want turquoise water and swaying palms, Sugar Beach is fine. As for the projects, they aren't THAT close and they are well kept. We drove through daily and never had a problem. All the locals we encountered were extremly kind and helpful. All the food we ate was fantastic. We did the normal Breezes, Domino Hut, Cheeseburgers in paradise, Island House, Mermaids at Bucaneer, Sunset Grill, etc. The last night we went to the Lobster Reef near Cane Bay. Great food, right on the water, no crowds....really local flavor...even some high schoolers with a jazz band were playing.
I would go back...that said, WARNING....Warning...We had been told that the area near Fredrickstad was dangerous. We never had a problem there. Our problem was on East End. Our rental car windows were broken out and all our belongs stolen while we were enjoying the view from the little beach below Point Udall. The police never made it out to us after even 1.5 hours and 3 phone calls. We finally started driving back into town and passed them at a gas station getting a snack! We learned from the police that the nearest station to East End is in Christianstad and they don't have enough police to patrol all the neighborhoods out that way, much less Point Udall. We learned too late that you are supposed to leave your rental car windows down and the doors unlocked and take ALL your valuables with you. Locking them in the glove box or truck will do you no good as the criminals will just break in there also. We had this misadventure on the 2nd day of our vacation and by the time we left the island we felt like it was a wonderful place if you follow a few simple safety rules.
1. Don't stop anywhere if you are the only vehicle around. We all like an uncrowded vacation, but there is safety in numbers.
2. Buy the rental car insurance. (I know most of the time it is a rip-off, but on St Croix it is essential.
3. Leave your non-essential valuables at home and keep necessary ones on your person.
4. Never leave your belongings unattended on the beach.
Just some basics.

The only negative event in the above review had nothing to do with Sugar Beach! It's a shame that we got just 3 stars and a scary title, but other than that, the review is terrific.

Sugar Beach Condo resort was a great bargain at $98 a dollars a night. It was less than 5 minutes from the main town of Christiansted, where everything is happening.

The place itself had all the amenitites including a fully stocked kitchen, a cooler and ice packs to take to the beach, a full sized refrigerator, a nice living room, entertainment center and more. The pool was very nice and the beach was just outside our patio door.

We did some of the best snorkeling on the island at our place, as well. We saw stingray, lobster, flouder and plenty of colorful fish. Don't miss the tirepark that is lined up with Smuggler's Cove (a restaurant) Just swim out a bit.

There are no restaurants at the resort but as I mentioned Smuggler's Cove it to the left and Breezes is to the right. Both are within walking distance. Other must-visit restaurants include Savant, Dunngan's, Divi's Caribbean Buffet (Thursday nights)and the Case Place.

Avoid Fredericksted. There is nothing going on there at all.

This was our first visit and we are going back next year. The grounds are neat and well maintained. The pool is large, with wet bars and built alongside a picturesque historic sugar mill. The beach is large and cleaned every morning.Accomodations are well appointed with fantastic views of the Caribbean..especially sunrises. The staff is friendly, accessible and helpful..from the maintenance staff to the manager, Steve. Resturants are within walking distance; groceries 5 minutes away and Christiansted is 10 minutes away with shops, resturants and water views. Can't ask for more.

I had high expectations for sugar beach condo, which is why I reserved for my honeymoon in oct '13. My family and I were placed in unit 116, and immediately I felt like I did not get my money's worth. Before reserving, customer service was so friendly and assuring, even insisting it was rental ready, but upon getting the keys I realized that I must have been given a unit that they were not supposed to rent out, but they did anyways. The condo had 2 bedrooms and we were in charge of putting up our own curtains. I did not complain because that is not a difficult task, however, some of the windows would not open or close. The balcony was locked the entire stay because staff could not find the key ( the front desk agent tried to convince me that all balconies were locked down due to safety concerns, but im pretty sure that was an excuse). There were 2 old televisions, one with cable, the other was probably there for display. The phone did not work. There was material to finish renovating stuffed behind the couch. No hot water in the bathroom, and the part that really ticked me off was that the air conditioning did not work. We called the security gaurd, since it said to do so as he was the only one still working, but the phone that was provided was disconnected so I sent a family member to get him. The security gaurd was very nice and helpful, and he advised us that the ac had tripped, and that in the morning we would be moved to a better condo and given an extra night to male up for the night ahead of us. We all slept on a mattress in the dining area because that was the only cool fan. The next morning, we went to the office expecting to get a key to our new condo, and we were told that we had to remain in the condo we were in and that we were not being given the extra night. So we paid almost $150 to sleep on the floor in an uncomfortable condo. The customer service rep who had seemed so sweet and helpful before we had reserved had become unhelpful and gave an attitude until I said that I would speak with the boss about being unsatisfied. I asked for a refund for the final day, but was told that I would not be able to, so I waited for the repair man to fix the ac half an hour later. I am disappointed because I did look forward to this little getaway, but I feel like my family was treated poorly. I tried to call to speak with the manager, but unsprisingly, i still haven't spoken to her.

Response from Resort_Team, Manager at Condo Hornblowers at Sugar Beach Resort
Responded Oct 24, 2013
Thank you for your valuable feedback. I share your concerns, and we are indebted to you for bringing these issues to light. I did not want to let your review go unacknowledged. Let me start by apologizing for the Desk Agent who made the reservation based upon your having seen the room and verifying that it was acceptable before completing the rental agreement on Oct.11. It is unfortunate that you did not inform her that there were 3 adults and 2 children in your party. Had she known that, a different unit would have been recommended - one that could better accommodate the number in your party, insuring that everyone was comfortable. The front desk clerks are granted rate flexibility with that particular unit, which is why you were able to receive the condo for such a special rate (the average rack rate for a similar condo is $100 more per night). Secondly, I sincerely apologize for you not being able to access the balcony. A Desk agent was sent down to assist you with this, however you were not in the unit at the time. Security is a priority here at Sugar Beach and of course we did not want to leave the balcony gate unlocked without you in the unit. As for the AC, it was working the entire time, only the settings were incorrect. A staff member made the needed corrections the next morning and then followed up with the AC technician to confirm that indeed the AC was working properly with no problems. The Security Guard does not work in the rental office and should have not misled you with that statement nor do we accept the unhelpful behavior of the Desk agent towards you – we are in the process of correcting that problem now. Finaly, on Monday morning the Reservation Manager went to visit 116 to address your concerns but unfortunately you had already departed. Please call us directly if you wish. It is not the precedent of this resort to have anyone go away feeling treated poorly, I hope that you will give us a chance to make amends and personally discover the "sweetness" of Sugar Beach that our many guests can attest to enjoying.

We stayed at Sugar Beach Condos Christmas week of 2004. There was just a very small TV no surround sound system. The bed was so unconfortable that we tried sleeping sideways on it but still woke up with terrible backaches. The beach was filled with sea mess and the water had the stuff floating all throughout it. The worst was we stayed there for one week and were told via their website that we would have cleaning done two times for our stay. Not once did a maid come to clean our place or change the sandy sheets on the lumpy bed.

The location is in the "projects" neighborhood of St. Croix but we did feel somewhat safe. I did not like the bars on the windows of the patio, felt like we were in jail. These bars are on all the condos. When I asked about the bars, prior to arriving, I was told they were there for hurricane protection. Well, after seeing other condos on other parts, safer, of St. Croix I realized they, the bars were there for security not hurricanes.

When I complained about the housecleaning and the bed I was not given a satisfactory answer other than I should have called about the housecleaning before we checked out...same with the bed.

We have been to St. Croix several times and I highly suggest staying at a place called the Tamarind Reef Hotel. Much much nicer and much better snorkeling, much better.

The snorkeling at Sugar Beach, the reef is a long swim in sea grass water...too far compared to Tamarind Reef.

I would not stay at Sugar Beach again, even at a deeply discounted price.

I would like to respond to the 1 star review we received entitled "Beware! Not all condos have TV system". Only one of our 41 rental units has a TV with surround sound. That owner does their own advertising for that unit which they market as "Theater on the Beach". Nowhere in the Sugar Beach literature or ads do we state that all condos have surround sound. Secondly, the reviewers stayed in one of our more popular units and it has been rented steadily for the past year. We have not had 1 complaint about the king bed. I personally talked to the very next guest in that unit, and asked if the king bed was comfortable and they sais it was "great". When I explained that the previous guest complained bitterly about the bed on the day they checked out, I received the following interesting comment. "Sounds like they cleaned their plate and then told the waiter that the food was no good." Since we recieved no complaints until checkout day, and therefore were not given a chance to react to them, I can only conclude that their primary motivation was to try to chisel some money off the rental. (There are other inaccuracies in the review as well but, in the interest of brevity, I will not respond to them all.)

My wife and I spent five great weeks in St Croix at the Sugar Beach Condos. The facility was secure and manicured and the staff was always responsive and courteous. It has a private beach and pool. Every unit looks out upon the water and the views are framed by palm trees and the city of Christiansted off in the distance. While a car would be the best way to get around, the units are only a couple of blocks from a work-out club, two supermarkets, fast-foods and a video rental. We ate in, grilled by the pool, danced to reggae music at night in town and snorkled in the nearby waters. The unit was air conditioned but the cool sea breeze each night obviated the necessity of it. The available wifi at the pool also made work away from home almost a pleasure. I would recommend it to everyone, but I fear they might take my reservation for next year.

I would like to share my experience at Sugar Beach Condos with the rest of the "cyber-world" since it was absolutely a dream come true. I spent 2 x 2 weeks (August and December 2004) at Sugar Beach (always in unit #306), which I love.

The location is a dream (and I live on the Beach in San Diego, CA), so we have decided to pack up and move to St. Croix. Honestly.

Steve and his staff were just absolutely a pleasure to deal with and so very professional. My total experience was so positive that I wish that I would have discovered this island sooner.

The Cruzans are polite and very friendly people and I enjoyed spending time in some local places, away from the three-to-five-star hotels.

We will soon be living there and I am very much looking forward to it and I hope that all of the tourists that complain that their room does not have a "surround sound" should stay at home.

Greetings from California.

We spent 10 days at the Sugar Beach condominiums in the unit known as Caribbean Blue. We had a wonderful and memorable time. The condo was very nicely furnished and very well maintained, completely stocked with anything and everything you'd ever need (except food, of course). The staff were very friendly and helpful and the common grounds were very well maintained. There was a free "get acquainted" barbecue on Wednesday that was very enjoyable and gave us a chance to meet some wonderful and friendly neighobrs. The water just off the beach IS full of short seagrass (NOT seaweed, big difference!!) but wearing watershoes made it totaly tolerable. There's a reef off-shore, and some interesting small fish sightings just off the beach when snorkeling.Convenient location. Went for many day-time walks around the neighboring comunity. Felt quite safe and secure. Most likely would not go for such a walk after dark, though.Beautiful 24 hour breeze though the condo made A/C totally unnecessary. Slept with the patio doors open every night, listening to the sounds of nature! And you got to see the Seaplane land and takeoff on the water almost directly in front of the complex several times every day.All in all, a very nice condo in a great complex in a very good location.

I understand our unit is owned by a couple who is elderly and ill. That is no reason for the unkempt filthy and dangerous situation we faced for $300 a night. Broken closet doors falling on you, sharp objects left in bath mat cut my foot, no battery in fire alarm, black mold in spots, leak from ceiling leaving wet slippery spots on tile floor, electrical switches taped so you wouldn't use them and which emit hot electrical smell if flicked, hot water heater does the same, internet did not work even when switched on, when phone worked it was too scratchy to use, holes in wall where pictures once hung, patio doors corroded and can't shut or lock, counters stained, air conditioner doesn't really work to bring temp below 77. I could list another ten or more items, but you get the picture ...and I do have pictures. This is the first negative report I have ever posted. The cost per night is ridiculous. I am sure there are better units here but believe many are occupied in the winter by owners. The HO association members and others we have met are really lovely, friendly and helpful, but the electrical issues and non working fire alarm put all at risk and I cannot in good conscience leave this unreported.

Hi Kathie We are sorry to hear you encountered a few issues with your unit. Our units are always inspected before check in by a Supervisor and if certain items were overlooked I do apologize the General Manger was aware of your concerns and he is handling your review very serious he will take the appropriate measures. We have also forwarded your list of issues to our maintenance department and I can assure you this has since been corrected. Our high speed internet was tested and worked in our pool area and rooms but it is hard to get connections in the beach area sometimes. With regards to the price for the one bedroom suite you rented, is intended for 2 people. In your case you received a great value for your group. We definitely offer great value to our guests providing them fully equipped oceanfront units. Again, thank you for letting us know where to improve , we hope you give us a chance to serve you in the near future.

Stayed at "Hornblower" for 12days. in April 2005. Very nice I would highly recommend this condo.

The condominium is three levels but "Hornblower" is located on the ground floor, about 20feet from the water. Since there is a coral reef located about a half mile from shore for great snorkeling, it creates very gentle wave on shore.

The beach is a great sand beach that's raked every morning.

The grounds of the complex is groomed daily also. The manager really needs to be complemented on what a wonderful job he does.

Restaurants are on either side of the complex within walking from unit.

"Hornblower" -------------------------- has all you could ask for, full kitchen, two bedrooms each with full bathrooms. New tv dvd, stereo, fans and whole house air conditioning.

From what we heard from one of the condo owners was that they lost power which should be restored by Nov and some damage to the brick wall surrounding the pool.

Sadly, I have to agree with Bsimpon8. If I had the option to do it again knowing what I do now I would not stay there again. I saw a roach also which at first I did not realize it but the more I see comments on here it must have been. I don't have them at home so I certainly don't want to have them when I'm spending a lot of money to stay somewhere on vacation! I also see the comments about bedbugs. I'm now wondering if that is why I was so itchy when I was there & it would always start up when I went to bed. Gross! We rented our unit through Home Away so it was not directly through Sugar Beach. The unit itself was just "ok". I wish I could give you a recommendation of another resort or somewhere else to stay, but quite honestly nothing there looked fantastic. St. Croix is not one of our favorite places we have been. We go to a different Caribbean island every year & would not go back here. Turks & Caico's and Grand Cayman are very nice. Good luck with wherever you go & enjoy your trip. Hope this helped.

After all of our concerns including live and dead cockroaches, blood and soil stained sheets, no snorkel gear, no supplies and an overall filthy condo, the new management, Ben and the owner told us there was nothing they could do. I have been in vacation rental properties my whole life and I can say with certainty that myself and my family have never experienced anything like that. And it was most definitely unit 103. All I know is that the owner could have done almost anything to make us happy, we didn't even request anything...we just wanted to receive some sort of restitution, in some form, even a damn apology would have went a long way, but she did absolutely nothing!

If you go to the front desk they will call you a cab, they are very helpful and friendly. The cab fare from the condo to Christiansted was $10.00-$12.00 depending on what the driver wanted to charge. We did not feel comfortable renting a car but we are older so it depends on how brave you are if you want to rent and drive on the wrong side of the road!
