Roger and Claudia's Inn was better than we expected. I looked long and hard for the perfect honeymoon spot, and after reading all of the excellent reviews I decided to book at Carrington's. Saying that I was pleased with my choice would be an understatement.
From the moment we arrived, Roger and Claudia made us feel as though this was our home. Our room was filled with ballons, rose petals, champaigne, and a fresh boquet of flowers from Claudia's garden. The view from our balcony (Flamboyant) was better than the pictures indicated.
We rented a car, which is a MUST if you want to truly enjoy all that St. Croix has to offer. We explored the island and beaches by day, then enjoyed the warm breezes on our balcony by night.
Claudia has great breakfasts in the morning, and you will never go away hungry. The inn was excellant, the island was breathtaking, but Roger and Claudia make Carrington's Inn a gem. Here are some of the highlights from our trip that I would strongly recommend to anyone visiting St. Croix:
Dining:
Duggan's Reef = the best on the island for local lobster. The Irish Whiskey Lobster is the best dish you can get anywhere.
Tutto Bene = the best Italian food on the island
Rumrunners = the best overall dining experience (casual). Fresh seafood, very reasonable prices, and great local drinks, all with a view of Christansted Harbor.
Cheeseburgers in Paridise = some of the best burgers anywhere on planet earth; great laid back atmosphere
** You don't have to go to all the fancy resturants to get great food.
Beaches:
Sandy Point = words cannot describe this beach; its well worth the effort getting there
Shoy's Beach = close to Christansted, excellent snorkling, and hardly anyone ever there
Entertainment:
Buck Island = the one MUST do trip while you are there
Drive the North Shore = the most beautiful drive we have ever taken; stop by "off the wall" for the best beach bar anywhere (try the caribbean fried oysters)
Barbecue on Hotel on the Cay = great local food and entertainment (Tuesday night only)
I next went to Frangipani, located off of the pool. It was smaller than Flamboyant and lacked a view, but was comfortable and pleasant. I would really recommend one of the rooms with a view if possible, but if you stay in Frangipani you can still enjoy the view from the open air lving room terrace.
The breakfasts were over the top. I have stayed at many B and B's before, but have never seen such a spread! Each day started out with Cream of Wheat (my grandmother would have been pleased), which was just an appetizer. The main course changed daily, and I really can't say which one I liked best. I enjoyed talking with Claudia, Roger and the other guests over breakfast, swapping travelers tips and getting the inside scoop from the Carringtons.
I bought a Rotary Club raffle ticket from Claudia, and hope that I win so that I can return to Carringtons right away. Otherwise I will have to start saving for a return trip to this quiet oasis in paradise.
That got me excited (especially considering the price!) so I booked the trip. We were both so thrilled with Carrington's Inn I have to say I thank God I found this website!
No review about Carrington's is complete without mentioning Roger and Claudia the hosts - from our experience they make the stay more than worthwhile! They are exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable about St Croix and gave us valuable insight into what we should (should not!) do on the island. They make some of the best breakfasts I've ever eaten and are fun simply to converse with!
Carrington's is small, quiet, clean, has great views of Christiansted and the pool is SO refreshing after a long day's sightseeing! The rooms were very tidy, the frig in our room had drinks in it (all week!), and the bathrobes were very comfy! Almost too many details to remember! We stayed in the Ginger Thomas room like one of the other reviews mentioned and it was fantastic.
We both HIGHLY recommend Carrington's Inn on St Croix - especially if you need a quiet, relaxing get-away with personal service. You'll get to meet some wonderful people (hi Jim and Wanda!) and have a great time I promise!
Do plan to rent a car - the Inn is about a mile from town and the roads are narrow and don't afford walking or bicycles very safely (in my opinion!). Oh, and don't forget to say "good morning" or "good afternoon" as soon as you walk into a local store! ;)
Thanks Roger and Claudia - we had a honeymoon we'll never forget!
I arrived around 9 pm. Everything was shut down and dark. I rang the doorbell and knocked for over 10 minutes. Finally, other guests came in from a grocery run and were very kind and let me in, and said they would get Rodger for me. He appeared in the kitchen and handed me keys and opened up a tiny room on the ground fllor next to the kitchen and across from the pool. It had no TV, and was basically just big enough to fit a bed inside and a small dresser. There were two windows that looked out to the courtyard with the pool - but with people walking by and the kitchen right there I had no sense of privacy at all. I mentioned that I was only in that room for one night - as Claudia had said I would move up to one of the nicer rooms. He was immediately rude about it, saying "No. No way. All booked up. Nope, this is it."
He then geave me a tour and said breakfast started at 8:30 am. I said I had to be at a meeting at 8:00, and he said "oh well, guess you'll miss breakfast." [A bed and breakfast that only starts after 8:30 am? With no offer of anything else to a guest who can't make that??]
I went back to my room, and realized it was incredibly hot. One tiny air conditionaer hung high on the wall, but with no control. I asked one of the other guests and they said they had a remote to turn the air down, and we looked everywhere, but couldn't find one. I called Rodger, and asked if therewas a way to turn the air doen, because it was really hot. Here's the conclusion to this: Rodger couldn't care a bit about my comfort and let me know that. "No." is all he told me, then proceeded to argue with me about what time I was suppose to arrive, and that is why the room was hot. I told him he was not hospitable and that I was not happy with the room or his attention to it. He hung up.
After a few minutes he called back to tell me that I should leave, because I had a problem with "his people." I felt extremely uncomfortable and unsafe and so called another hotel (Caravelle-- see my review) and left. When I handed him the key, I asked if he would check the room so we could agree that it was untouched - he said "Oh, you just take what you want, man!" At that point, I realized I was dealing with un unstable person and left. My co-workers were shocked at my experience as they have stayed there and had a great time - I however will never give those people my business again, and hope that they realize they have a reputation to uphold - it is unconscionable to drive away a single feamale late at night from your hotel with a hostile attitude and reception like that. NO BUSINESS RUNNING A B&B!
Beware - looks like these people are unpredictable.
We stayed in one of the three rooms with a king-sized bed and a view (looking north-east) of the city of Christiansted and the harbor beyond. THE VIEW alone is a good reason for considering this inn for your vacation: the blue-green waters of the bay, dotted by white, anchored boats; red-roofed buildings in town and lush islands in the distance. Although our room – the Morning Glory – doesn’t have a balcony, we liked being in the room on top (it’s situated over the Periwinkle) with a beautiful vaulted ceiling. I estimated our room to be about 24’ x 24’ with windows all along the north-east and -west walls. Part of the room is divided off for bathroom and closet space. The Periwinkle and the Flamboyant are the other two rooms with king beds and THE VIEW. There are also two smaller rooms with queen beds just next to the pool with windows facing south.
We had a ceiling fan in our room that we seldom used because of the almost constant tradewinds that reminded us we were on an island. There’s an air conditioning unit, small refrigerator, coffee maker, and a room safe and the comfortable bed is enveloped in a lace curtain (that I opened on my side because of my too-frequent nightly visits to the huge, tastefully decorated bathroom). The house seems to be well-maintained and is surrounded by beautiful flowers, and the rooms are cleaned every day – our housekeeper, Linda, does a fantastic job.
As mentioned in previous reviews, Claudia and Roger have perfected the Art of Breakfast: Creative menus, perfectly prepared food, fresh fruit, good coffee (juice and tea also available), pleasant conversation, and good advice when asked. We enjoyed meeting and talking with Jon and Jessica, Hugh, Dick, Karen, Larry, Jim and Suzanne. And we all thought that Claudia’s “Crucian Toast” with (I’m guessing now) rum, brown sugar, vanilla, nuts and cinnamon was a standout.
Claudia made our taxi arrangements from the airport in advance (a very nice, dependable man named Douglas who reminded us to drive on the left and to be careful pulling out at intersections). We had also made advance arrangements with Judi of Croix to rent a Toyota Yaris which turned out to be a perfect car for the two of us to explore the island. We enjoy snorkeling and had brought our own equipment so that we could check out all the good spots. We also took Big Beard’s catamaran to Buck Island (highly recommended and if you go early in your stay, you may be able to take advantage of their half-price special for another trip out), and we took the sea plane to St. Thomas and a ferry to St. John one day – St. John’s is beautiful but be careful with your schedule – it so happens that they regularly cancel scheduled ferries for apparently no reason (or at least we couldn’t find anyone who could tell us – we learned to get used to it with the ferries).
We recommend taking a day to explore Christiansted – park in the free public lot on Strand St. (next to the Best Western hotel - off Queen Cross). There are a lot of neat shops and jewelry stores – such as IB Designs on Company St. [----] Stop in the National Park visitor center located in the building built in 1856 as the Scale House – the lady there is very friendly and helpful and is a wealth of good information about the history of the island (as are many of the National Park staff). Tour Fort Christianvaern – built around 1749 ( it’s a self-guided tour but very interesting ) - see more about the historic district at [----].
As far as the restaurants, we honestly didn’t have a bad meal – it all depends on your expectations (do a little research first) – and some are gourmet-worthy in quality but also price. We ate at the Paradise Café (outstanding fresh fish); the Fort Christian Brew Pub -we ate here most often – good sandwiches (“awesome” burgers) and on Thursdays, they serve PITCHERS of micro-brew for $5.00 (I can’t even get that in Columbus); Kim’s (reasonably –priced and good); Savant (expensive but worth it – romantic atmosphere, very good food – try the red curry chicken or spicy squid); Salud (good but also expensive); Bacchus - our most expensive meal but we also had perhaps the most memorable desserts (key lime pie and bread pudding )we’ve ever had; Harvey’s (open for lunch only but you’ve got to go and try the truly local cuisine – we didn’t go wrong with the stewed goat and the pot fish). But the most fun we had during a meal was at Chicken Charley’s Roadhouse east of town. The evening we were there a pianist named Charles Lindbergh was featured, and he played a wide variety of standards and showtunes and offered to accompany my wife as she sang “Can’t Help Loving That Man of Mine.”
This was our first experience at a bed and breakfast for one of our vacations (We’re long-time travelers but first-time B&B’ers). Carrington’s offers very much to the tourist who is looking for a closer connection – with other travelers and with the wonderful people who are fortunate enough to live where we visit – all too briefly.
The owners Roger and Claudia were very nice and super helpful with hints and advise about St Croix. The location of the Inn on the Island couldn't be better. The room we stayed in was called 'Periwinkle' it was huge and beautiful! The service given by the maid was great and way more than was expected. Fresh flowers, complimentary soda and towels for the beach were just a few of the nice touches that really made us feel well cared for. The hosts Roger and Claudia went way above and beyond to make us feel welcome, My wife and myself were treated like good friends as well as honored guests. We have traveled twice a year on vacation for the last fifteen years and we both agree this is the one place we would most like to stay again.
P.S. The breakfast was so good with such a wide variety of choices we skipped lunch every day and spent the savings on dinner at the high end restaurants in town. The food on St. Croix i better than on many other islands we have visited.
The rooms are meticulously clean, the beds and bedding were clean, comfortable and the location way up on Hermon Hill is quiet and relaxing, with an amazing view of Christiansted harbor. The Periwinkle, Flamboyant & Morning Glory rooms are the best, because they overlook the harbor and ocean, and are larger. We stayed in 'Ginger Thomas', and it has a pool/hillside view, but it was still nice. The room size was good, it had a cieling fan, little desk, AC, phone, clock, but could have used a chair to lounge in (but thats just me being nitpicky) and the bathroom was huge, bigger than our room, and had a huge closet, walk-in shower, coffee maker, little fridge, large vanity, ceiling fan, tile floors. The walls were white and the bedrm was mint green, gauzy curtains & miniblinds on the windows, and the color scheme is pastels and calming. No tv in our room, but there is a big, new, awesome flat screen JVC lcd hdtv in the common area (but we didnt watch tv that much!), which overlooks the harbor, has a small balcony, and is open to the pool area.
All the rooms are centered around the pool, which is about 20 X 10, and very refreshing, and has a nice lounging area with chaises overlooking the harbor. The kitchen, dining and sitting area are located inside the main building on the other side of the pool, and it was very nice to look out towards the pool while we had breakfast there every day, cooked by the very good cook and most gracious host Roger, Claudia & their helper Linda. They made sure we had our fill. The food was very good. One day we had the rum soaked french toast, which was good, once we had eggs, sausage & fruit, another was oatmeal, omelets, fruit. They serve fresh brewed coffee, and have tasty fruit juices and fresh fruit, delicious breads and bagels, and yogurts every day.
The only drawbacks that we had for St. Croix was that it is very easy to get lost, roads aren't marked very well. Also, there are some poor sections that you shouldn't wander into at night. But overall, St. Croix is a very beautiful caribbean island paradise. All the people are friendly and helpful, and accomodating. The beaches are awesome (Grapetree Bay on the south east end was excellent), the restaurants are very good (Savant, Tutti Bene), and the prices aren't too high.
*Note: DON'T RENT A CAR FROM OLYMPIC RENT-A-CAR ! They were incompetent, didn't have the car we reserved, and then gave us a higher priced car (but with a 10% discount - still higher than expected) that was very scratched and banged up, where several accessories in the car didnt work (radio tuner, door lock, cig. lighter, no windsheild washer fluid, wipers smeary and terrible!). They did the Bait and Switch. And it happened to a couple other people while we were picking up our car--they didnt have the cars that were reserved! If you want a good car, stick with one of the agencies at the airport (Hertz, Budget, Avis), its more convenient and the prices are the same or only a dollar or 2 higher per day.
