It's always ni e to be greeted by name it makes you feel appreciated and valued this is my 3rd time staying here love the staff love the hotel and it's cozy, safe, clean, environment. The location can't be beat central to everything beach, bars, stores, transportation, restaurant's,the gayborhood, the melacon everything this time I stayed on the first floor # 3 it's small but perfect for 1 person or even a couple a nice size bathroom walk in shower and a closet a refrigerator a counter top a air conditioner and powerful fan it worked for me it was clean and secure. A communal microwave across from room if needed. Was another great stay here.

My favorite go-to hotel while I PV just like being home. Everyone here from front desk to cleaning staff treat you like family always friendly outgoing and welcoming. Always clean and professional and on point. Little hidden gem. If you don't want to be bothered they leave you alone if you need anything there always willing to go above and beyond to help you there also very honest had my clothes washed and left money in my pocket. By the time I got back later that evening it was on my bed with a note there very honest humble and hard working here love it here there is no other option for me but hotel hortencia.

If you are looking for an affordable place to stay while in Vallarta look no further. I stayed at this very small, quaint, family run hotel for two weeks in December, 2002. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. This was my 6th time in Vallarta and my 1st time every travelling on my own. At all times I felt very safe in this little hotel and the staff there were the best I've seen (even in 5star hotels). They knew you by name and would always take the time to talk to you and ask you if you needed anything. The rooms were clean, had a TV and fridge. (Ask for a room with a balcony)The location is great! About two blocks from the municple flea market and within walking distance to some of the best restaurants and nightlife in Vallarta. The only down fall....no pool. Not a big deal, the beach is just a short walk away. This gives you an excuse to stop at the ice cream store on your way, definitely the best I've ever had. (only 9 pesos)All in all, I would recommend this hotel to the traveller who is a little more experienced, likes the beach and loves a great price and family hospitality.

If you want to spend extra money and stay in a construction site, stay here. I was horrified to find out that the hotel was half torn-down and that my room was in a bad shape and smelled like mold. Your window is in a full view of construction garbage. I'm pretty low maintenance. I wasn't expecting a 4 or 5 star hotel. But for the price I paid per night and glowing reviews I've read, it just didn't make any sense. I've stayed at Hotel Pasada de Roger and Hotel Rio Malecon, both of which were CHEAPER and thousand times BETTER than this horror house. Hotel Eloisa and Hotel Encino looked like better options too.
I feel bad for leaving a bad review because the staffs were incredibly nice and sympathetic. Unfortunately, they were incompetent. They didn't know how to handle this kind of situation. I immediately voiced my concern, but the staff didn't know what to do. Later that night, a manager agreed to let me cancel the rest of the stay. To my surprise, he said he didn't know how to reverse a credit card transaction, and he'll be charging me 20% tax on the nights I cancelled. He said he didn't know how to refund the tax so he'll be charging me. It just baffled me, but whatever. I just wanted to get out of this horror house as soon as possible.
Look at the pictures and see for yourself.

Upon entering the hotel you are immeadiately impressed with a clean, friendly atmosphere. This is a family owned hotel that is very convenient and helpful. Personalized attention to help you enjoy your stay in Puerto Vallarta. It is in a safe, quiet neighborhood 5 blocks from the beach. The spacious inner court yard is a great place to meet fellow travlers. The rooms are spcious and have nice firm beds with fridg and TV. It is located just South of the river in the older part of town with some of the best dining in the area.

I stayed at the Hotel Hortencia over New Years 2002/2003 and I loved it.

My friends and I stayed in their suite and found it had everything a traveller would want; on a shoestring budget. As you know, staying anywhere during the New Year celebrations costs more. And the Hortencia proved to be the best bargain, for what ya got.. Fridge, A/C, T.V., stove, perfect location to all amenities and friendly curtious service were just some of the finer points. It is a little walk to the beach BUT, because of that you find yourself snug deeply into the cultural areas of Old Vallarta; far removed from the commercialization Puerto Vallarta has fallen victim of.

I would not suggest this hotel to anyone looking for pampering, but rather to the traveller looking to experience some culture.

I will be back New Years 2003/2004! See ya soon Hortencia.

I have been here for 3 days, and cannot say anything bad about the hotel. The staff is wonderful, Jorge and his son as well as other staff speak English. The room I have is on the street side with a balcony and of course there is traffic but not unbearable. If you have a problem sleeping, use earplugs, but I really did not need them. Air conditioner is extra, but even in June, with the temp around the 30C mark, I found the ceiling fan was enough to circulate the air. The large room has 2 double beds, a tv, and a separate large bathroom and a large balcony with a screened patio door, which does a great job of keeping the noise out of the room, but I did not close the door at all, except for when I left the room. I would definitely recommend this place, and if you go to their web site, there is a toll free USA phone number and if you ask for Jorge (George) and stay for longer than a day or so, he will give you a great rate. I have checked out other hotels in the Romantica Zone, including the Yazmin and Posada De Roger, but prefer this hotel, as it is brighter and does not seem to have as many gringos in this area.. It is like a typical Mexican neighbourhood, with lots of taco stands & Mom & Pop restaurants. For a bright room and a great location, some 5 blocks from the Malecon, to me this is a 5 star hotel. BTW the comida corrida lunch meals in the area are about 50 pesos with complete meal and very filling. I went to the flea market, upstairs, and had a great meal for 35 pesos.

Everyone wants a clean, safe, convenient, well-priced place to stay, and in Puerto Vallarta, the Hotel Hortencia offers all of that. But if you travel a lot, you also search for something else, the quality of hospitality. After all, you are laying your head on somebody else's pillow, no matter how much you paid. That innkeeper either gives you the benediction of welcome or not.

The ancient Greeks knew this. They would like this place.

If that all sounds like nonsense to you, stay at this hotel for the good price and location, the clean sheets and hot water, and the fluent English and good advice about PV.

But, if you are are in search of hospitalitity, know that although we arrived by car and the hotel has no designated parking, Jorge took our keys and parked us within sight of the door. And worked with grumpy me to find a room to my liking [on the street, although I told him I wanted quiet, because it turns out I didn't really], and welcomed us like old friends when we returned two weeks later. All I can say is, we felt like they saw us, and welcomed us, and sheltered us, and we would come back again, with great happiness.

The beds are spotless but hard; there is no elevator. The tamales on the corner are the best in the world. If that sounds good to you, stay here.

I didn't know anything about this hotel when I came in to ask if they had any rooms available. Luckily for us, they did. Our room (#19) was on the 3rd floor facing the street. It was a bit noisy, with lots of traffic going by, but you can also hear music, birds, people talking as they go by, and I found the sounds to be very nice and even quite relaxing.

The rooms are pretty big-- two double beds-- with a TV, fridge, lots of closet space, and a modern bathroom, all painted a tangerine color. Everything was very clean.

It is a few short blocks from the beach where there are lots of beachside restaurants, and in the old part of town to the south of Rio Cuale. Close to bus stops, taxi stands, etc... I was very pleased with the location.

The people working at the front desk were very friendly, and always had a smile and a few kind words as we came and went during the day. They were eager to help, too, when we asked them logistical questions, often consulting among themselves to give us the most accurate information.

There is also wireless internet in the rooms, which was a welcome surprise, and helped a lot with planning.

We stayed here 8 nights, and were very happy with it. Of course, if your style is more those all-inclusive mammoths further up the beach, then you won't like it here!
