Nestled on a stunning beachfront, Thompson Zihautanejo, a Hyatt resort, garners praise for its direct beach access and tranquil vibe. Guests appreciate the well-maintained and comfortably modern rooms, though there are occasional remarks about tardy housekeeping. The cleanliness across the resort receives high marks, adding to the peaceful ambiance, although opinions on value vary. The staff's attentive service is frequently commended, despite some slow service on the beach. While the vibrant atmosphere is generally enjoyed, the loud music at times can disrupt the serenity.

I absolutely love the Thompson Zihuatanejo! I have stayed there two times, once in 2019 and again in December 2020, as an escape and I felt totally safe in times of Covid. From the moment you arrive and enter the beautiful outdoor lobby, you are greeted by Hector, who takes your bags and brings them to your room while you're checking in. The people at the front desk are so warm and accommodating, making sure you are happy and have everything you need for a comfortable stay.

The rooms are spacious, modern and beautiful (and many with their own plunge pools) with all the luxuries you would expect. Even the shampoo/conditioner and body lotion is exquisite. In non-coved times, the rooms are cleaned twice a day and in Covid times, you can request them cleaned when you want or not at all.

The resort has several pools, including the adults only pool in the center, where you can have food and drinks brought to you right there. Palapas line the beach with the most comfortable loungers with tables behind them for when you’re ready for your beachside lunch. The service is top-notch, every single person who works there has a smile on their face, so friendly and kind. Alfredo in the HAO restaurant always gave wonderful service for our delicious breakfasts (acai bowls don’t disappoint), Juan in the afternoon to bring us cocktails and fresh appetizers poolside (tuna crudo is a must try!). Unfortunately, I can’t remember everyone’s names but they are all so wonderful, so helpful, they really bend over backwards to ensure you are having a wonderful vacation.

Of course I can’t forget the wonderful ladies at the spa who give the most incredible massages! Rosealba and Modesta are healing angels. I had four massages with Rosealba over my two stays at the Thompson and she truly has magical hands! The spa is very beautiful but in times of Covid, they moved it to an open, airy beach suite, which is even more relaxing with the ocean view and sounds of waves crashing as you are massaged.

Finally, the beach (La Ropa) and the water is a dream, it’s so warm and calm, clear with smooth sand and lots of fishes swimming around! From here you can hire a boat and sail around Ixtapa (highly recommend! Find Victor to coordinate and his nephew, Ernesto is the captain) or go parasailing or jet-skiing. The waters are so calm, it’s easy breezy to do everything!

Thank you to everyone at the resort and all the people in Zihuatanejo for your kindness, generosity and exceptional service! Everyone was very diligent about wearing a mask and giving enough space, it was truly a reprieve from the pandemic. This will definitely be a yearly tradition and I can’t wait to go back!

I can’t say enough great things about the Thompson on Playa la Ropa in Zihuatenejo. First off, it has the premier location on the beach - nestled into a flat coconut grove right on the beach (most other resorts there are built on the hillside). You can walk from your room, to the restaurants and the beach in flip flops or bare feet - it’s truly a beach vacation. In addition, all the staff is friendly, professional and helpful - that makes such a difference when you’re on vacation. For our last dinner, they set up a special table for us on the edge of the beach, with candles and torches, and made us the most delicious lobster dinner we’ve ever had. Lastly, the rooms are beautiful, well laid out with lots of storage to put your clothes away, and individual AC in each room.
We look forward to our next visit!

The Thompson is a wonderful hotel with a stunning location right on the best stretch of the perfectly clean and lush, Playa de la Ropa.

The rooms are lovely and spacious. We had a beach suite both on the lower level and the upper level. The upper level beach suites enjoy more privacy, but being able to walk off the massive desk and into the sand is such a rare and wonderful experience. We had a hard time deciding which room we preferred. Both are private, but there are times during the evening, when you feel like you might want to close the blinds on the lower level. Not a major inconvenience as the beach was relatively quiet and there isn’t a lot of foot traffic.

We loved the food - ordered the rib eye tacos almost every day. Their passion fruit margaritas were delicious, as well as the varieties of ceviches. The front desk also made some outstanding recommendations for dining in town - which is a quick, 80 peso $4 USD taxi ride.

Taxis are plentiful and we felt very safe the entire time. The people were nothing but kind and welcoming.

The town of Zihuatanejo is a bit sleepy at present due to the pandemic, but everything is very clean, the food scrumptious, and the locals are eager to welcome back tourists.

A special thanks to Bruno and Isabelle for being especially gracious and kind during our short, 4 night stay. We will be back, for sure!

We spent a week at the Thompson Zihua and experienced a direct hit by hurricane Rick during our stay. The staff was exemplary in the way they handled the situation. They moved all three rooms of our family to rooms away from the beach to higher ground and made sure that we were safe. We were provided with box lunches and had plenty of provisions since the Hao restaurant was closed in the morning. The staff also did an amazing job cleaning up the property after the storm, including removing downed trees and substantial debris. As always, the beach experience at the Thompson is wonderful and Francisco made sure that we had everything we needed, including special habanero peppers to spice up our daily lunch menu. Our room had several disappointing maintenance issues, including a non-working entry door lock, a black-out curtain that fell to the ground, a bathroom faucet that didn't work and some threadbare bathroom towels. I was also a bit disappointed that the breakfast menu for those of us who paid for the breakfast package was quite a bit more limited than it was during out last visit just six months ago. Finally, the hotel no longer pays for the Covid testing you need prior to returning to the US. Having said that, the Thompson is still the best place to stay on Playa la Ropa and we will undoubtedly return.

My family and I recently enjoyed a beautiful time at Thompson. The lodging was more than spacious and extremely comfortable. The grounds were immaculate and beautiful. A nice blend of modern and traditional aesthetics. Had a restful sleep every night. The housekeeping staff was very accommodating and provided any necessary towels or toiletries promptly.
The location was amazing, located front and center at Playa La Ropa. The sunsets did not disappoint. All the restaurants have a beautiful backdrop of the beach. The waves were perfect for those seeking a relaxing time. Special thanks to Juan and his support staff during the day by the beach, facilitating our appetites and to Felipe and his support staff at Ceniza at night. The dinners at Ceniza were absolutely delicious and pleasing to the eye and palette. The service at Thompson was very warm and unforgettable.

We recently had a 4 night stay the Thompson and from the moment we entered the property, we were treated like royalty! A huge shutout to some staff: Eddie, Christina, Marco, and Bruno were the friendliest and most welcoming staff I've ever had the pleasure of encountering at any hotel. They all should deserve a promotion, and they are the embodiment of superior customer service. We've made it a priority to visit Zihua at least once a year, and will always choose the Thompson because of the cleanliness of the property, the best staff in the world, amazing food, and the best location in all of Zihua. I hope nothing ever changes, and I look forward to saying hello to Eddie, Christina, Bruno, and Marco very shortly. I love the Thompson and all of their staff! PLEASE DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING!!! P.S. I would highly recommend paying for a Beach Suite as nothing compares to the views and waking up to the sound of the ocean every morning.

We were staying at the Thompson as it was blocked for a wedding we were attending. The location is beautiful, but the details were missed and did not make it worth the $.

I was quite excited to have a plunge pool, but don’t waste your money upgrading as the filling device turned off at night, so when we tried to go in at 9pm the water only half filled it. To top it off the plunge pool was basically a mosquito breeding ground. Our shower and some of our companions never got hot, lukewarm showers for over $300 a night was not enjoyable. I couldn’t get over the strong scents of the provided toiletries, the hand soap was so heavily scented it almost made me nauseated. When people wanted to use the tennis court, they wanted to charge $15 rentals, when you are spending that much money I would expect it to be included. Also they have a form for dry cleaning and laundry, but then when we went to the front desk they said they don’t have dry cleaning, why make a form that says they do?

When I went to Hao to have breakfast, the meal was supposed to come with a roasted tomato and potatoes, but they didn’t have any, so for $14 I only got eggs and refried beans. I would have thought they would have offered extra beans or a different side, because that meal was definitely not worth the cost. Basically all the food and drinks were super expensive, but the fish tacos and ahi tostadas were delicious.

The beach was beautiful, but I expected more from the Thompson for the cost and being a “luxury resort”

This was out third visit to Thompson Zihuatanejo and we hope to return every year. The hotel is set on the beautiful Playa la Ropa, one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Mexico, perhaps the world.
We have stayed in three different room types and they have all been wonderful; the lagoon suite, the king with plunge pool and a beach front suite with a plunge pool.
The food is amazing at both Hao and Cenniza. The tuna crudo and any of the ceviches at Hao are a must. The breakfast pastries are made in the bakery on property and worth the splurge. The paella at Cenniza was the best we've ever had.
Rosie at the spa is amazing and the gym has a Peloton bike!
It's the staff at Thompson and their personalized service that sets it apart from most beach resorts. From the moment you arrive, Oscar and Bruno at the front desk make you feel welcome. Hector helped with the bags and is so sweet. Many of the staff have been there over 10 years. Juan, Ediberto & Alfredo on the beach made it so nice. Venusino at Hao was great every morning.
Can't say enough good things about The Thompson.
Until next year...

What an amazing week we had at Thompson Zihuatanejo! Our first trip to this lovely oasis and just a few short hours flight from Southern California! 6 very particular travelers and a staff that literally bent over backwards to ensure our stay was nothing short of perfect. Their COVID protocols were flawless and taken extremely seriously. You certainly felt that guest safety was an absolute priority for the entire staff! We worked with Vanesa at the front desk (and Oscar too) in advance of our stay to arrange for everything from transportation to reservations. Everything was executed with grace and perfection! Juan was assigned to attend to us at the beach for the entire week. Personable, friendly, professional, helpful, gracious...just a few words that come to mind of Juan and his service for us. And Chef Bernardo! I cannot say enough about this amazing young chef! They knew we would be taking a number of dinners at the hotel, and Bernardo and his team went out of their way to ensure each and every meal was it's own experience. The tasting menu he prepared for us the first night was one of the finest meals I have ever had...anywhere!
The location of this beautiful resort couldn't be better! A picture perfect location where we enjoyed our days swimming in the warm waters, jet skiing right off of the beach, playing cards and backgammon, reading, napping...the epitome of relaxation coupled with gracious, wonderful service. We enjoyed it so very much that we are already planning our return in just a few weeks.

Not sure. My guess is they use beach personnel for cocktail service at that pool. That’s what they use at the main pool. Only pool with dedicated bar and swim up service is the kid pool.
