This midcentury modern hotel sprawls over several gardened acres and is very peaceful and architecturally distinctive, as are many of the Camino Real hotels of this era. This one feels like it could use a bit of a refresh; it's starting to look a little worse for wear. Service was very good and the brunch was bountiful and delicious.
Our rooms were definitely dated but clean.... Everything worked. The staff was very helpful in arranging transportation. The hotel location is very good and was convenient for visiting friends, business and some site seeing....
Reached 29th November and left 4th December 2019. What a beautiful, old world style hotel...not the modern multi-storied glass and steel modern monstrosities but all other facilities are equivalent. The Hotel has only two storeys but a SPRAWLING campus with all sorts of hideaways to sit and chill! The Room I had was large and had an open air balcony with two chairs and a table over looking a beautifully manicured lawn and at the far end I could see the open area where we had breakfast everyday. There were two doors (one wasnot locked just blocked with a heavy piece of furniture) leading to the two rooms on either side,so opening that up would turn the three rooms into a suite...but check lock for security. The bed was large and comfortable. The breakfast! Ah, the breakfast...one could write poems on it...what a lavish spread...after such a breakfast I often just had a fruit for lunch. Dinner at the Maria Bonita restaurant was quite a spread too..but the breakfasts I will remember for a long time. Hats off to the hardworking staff in the kitchen. But a word of advice. The Grackles (dark coloured birds that look like koels to Indians) are bold and sneak bits of cut fruit from the laden bowls...given that the also dig in the soil and donot use sanitizers on their beaks...be careful about cut fruit. The rooms are well furnished. I particularly appreciated the "alna" a piece of furniture to hang clothes on; I spread my wet towel on it and it was dry by the time I returned in the evening. There was a TV, a safe, an iron, a mini bar (nothing inside) but NO TEA KETTLE (horror!!!). There was a nice paddded chair with foot rest and a table too. Toilet was large and furnished with shower facility and complimentary bottles of toiletries. Although I was not charged for the small bottle (about 400ml) of water in the room...the notice said it was for 40 pesos....Housekeeping carts had similar water bottles that were ONLY handed out on request. Once I drank the entire bottle and returned the empty bottle but no record was kept (I did not sign anything) nor was I billed. Very confusing this. The grounds are LOVELY. It is a bird watcher's paradise. I could have happily stayed on campus for weeks just watching the birds and strolling around. From around 7AM when dawn breaks and till about 9 or 9.30 AM when I went for breakfast, I used to simply patrol the grounds (there is a tennis court too and multiple swimming pools) looking for birds...saw many new species. Just Gracias and Por favor were enough to get me what I needed...many staff members, but not all, speak Spanish. No complaints? I do have two. The Hotel is very noisy. I woke up multiple times every night because either someone was mowing the lawn at an unearthly hour or the bathroom was making all sorts of noises or someone next door had the TV on HIGH or was speaking on the phone.... the worst was the bathroom fan. Not having a tea kettle in the room was a major pain. But apart from that, the general stay was very relaxed. I loved the compound. There is an EXXO store within stone's throw and I went and got large bottles of drinking water because the Hotel's policy on supplying drinking water in rooms was not clear to me and I did not want to be hit with a huge bill at checkout (12 noon). Best to drink bottled water in Mexico. The mall La Gran Plaza is just a six or seven minutes walk and I went there to buy Mexican chocolates and small gifts. Camino Real fixed us a half day city trip with Tequila Grand Tour at a reasonable rate. We were picked up and dropped at the Hotel. There are other options for tours but I only had time for the half day tour that also took us to Tonala and Tlaquepaque...where souvenirs were affordable and in greater variety as compared to the two Souvenir shops in the hotel. Some stuff in the Hotel's shops had better finish though. The litmus test for a Hotel stay is if you answer YES to these two questions: First: if you go back to the city will you stay here again and second, Will you recommend this Hotel to others. It is a resounding YES! to both. Thank you smiling staff and the lovely birds at Camino Real. I am so happy you have maintained the charming old-time look and feel of the Hotel. Plus the free wi fi...a modern touch.…
Lovely patio-style rooms with verandahs in front. Very laid back and comfortable ambiance. Lots of greenery, excellent variety of birds twittering around the property. 2 pools, one outdoor and a heated one as well. Well outfitted and spacious rooms. Great Mexican food in their breakfast buffet and their restaurant, La Huerta. Excellent service and housekeeping.
It is an open, gracious property. The breakfast is most excellent and the call of many birds is heard, at breakfast-time. The Mexican Grackles (medium-sized, black birds with an alert look about them) come quite close to you while you sit there. The Mexican food is very good and both the room service and house-keeping are excellent. Best of all, the warmth and hospitality of the Mexican people makes it a great stay. The Mexican people are exceptionally warm and emotional and this is reflected in the very personal service you receive at this hotel.
