The facilites are clean, however the design is old. Everyone from the staff was really nice except from one guy at the counter who said there were no more rooms and also refused to call a cab for us, which we could find both things on our own. Food is not good, everyday is almost the same meal than the day before, the only delicious thing are the hamburgers from the snack bar. The open bar only includes drinks from an unknown brand, if you want any familiar brand you have to pay extra. The schedules are really tight so restaurant and snack bars open really late and close really early, leaving you no choice than going out of the hotel if you wanna have anything past 11 pm.

The hotel is amazing... the staff is really nice and polite. They make you feel at home. Everything was on schedule and they work hard to make you feel comfortable. I highly recommend Aquamarina hotel, specially if you are going to Cancun with family. The location is also great with amazing beach!

We had a group of 6 that stayed at the Aquamarina from Jan 5-15, 2006 on the all-inclusive option. We booked 2 room, but when we arrived, our rooms were on different floors and opposite ends of the hotel. We asked if we could get 2 rooms next to each other, but instead they gave us a penthouse suite at no extra charge. It was wonderful. The rooms were clean, service was great, and the food was fine, I noticed many negative comments about the food here, but most of the "buffet style" resturants at the hotels serve about the same stuff. Even at the 4-5 star resorts that I have stayed at.

The only downfall is the beach area. It's great for sunbathing, but swimming is kinda out of the question. There is alot of seaweed, and the bottom is soft. You can swim out about 70 yards and there are sandbars you can sit on. I recommend taking a bus to the beaches on the east side of the island if you want to swim and play in the waves. I also suggest taking the catamaran trip to Isla Mujeres. Just look for the sign out on the beach. It costs about $40, but includes snorkling, a wonderful lunch, drinks, shopping, and a great crew.

Overall the hotel is great for the cheaper prices you pay. It's a great hotel for partying. The drinks are always flowing, and the bartenders are wonderful.(try the "hoochy koochy shot!" This place is mostly popular with the 20s & 30's age group. We met tons of fun people, and would stay there again. The hotel is close to downtown, but also a quick ride to any of the discos and shopping malls in the hotel zone. If anyone has any questons, feel free to contact me.

Poor service, the staff is rude... It was 3 pm and my room still wasn't ready, the hotel is neglected, there were hairs in my room, you can hear everything from everywhere, the buffet has few options, and there's no place to work.

I do not recommend at all, we had to switch hotels, we had such a bad experience.

First let me encourage all english speakers to please come. Yes the staff aren’t fluent but hey it’s Mexico and they need to practice just like we do. The pools are pleasant. The rooms are fine and the air conditioning works. The neighborhood is safe after dark and much quieter than other areas in the hotel zone. The staff are adorable and so pleasant and helpful. The food at the hotel is good but if it’s not to your taste, there’s several restaurants in walking distance. It is on the caribbean but it is next to boat docks and almost no waves. If the open full on wavy ocean is your thing it may not be up to snuff. Overall this was a great experience and I would return.

This is a small resort. Friendly staff some who have worked here 30 years. They do manily speak Spanish... bc it's Mexico. We did fine with our limited Spanish and google translate. The food is traditional central Mexican food. That's not enchiladas, tacos, or taco salad. We had fresh fruit and veggies everyday. This is not a smoothie, vegan, special diet place. This is like Anthony Bourdain took you on a tour to a neighborhood in Mexico with great food, wonderful bar and opportunity to make new friends. Thank you to Jose, Osmond, Manuel, Clara, Ivan, Jerry, All front desk staff and all the activities directors. We were there for 4 days. Always a clean room, cold drink, quiet beach and friendly staff.

Check your 5-star expectatons at the door! Don't believe all that you read!!! I read the awful and wonderful reviews of the Aquamarina, and was a bit nervous about what to expect. All the worries were unfounded. We had a wonderful vacation there. The staff is the best, and very accomodating. Sure the beach had seaweed, but so did ALL of the resorts including the 5 star resorts. It's on the gulf for goodness
sake!!! The staff was out in the mornings cleaning up the beaches, and I found no problem what so ever!!

Remember, any hotel can have it's problems. It's just the luck of the draw which room you get. If you are unhappy, you can always say something to change the situation! Sure if you come from a 5-star resort expecting the 3-4 star to be the same, you are deluding yourself!! This hotel was not as bad as some have said, and it was VERY clean.

The food was very good as well. We did not go the all inclusive route, but we didn't feel we needed to run off to a different place to eat.

Make sure you keep an eye out for Angel. He is an artist that comes in the evenings and does the most AMAZING paintings with spray paint of all things! He is truely an artist!

Enjoy your trip to the Aquamarina Beach Hotel! It really is a very nice place to stay.

As a double visitor of the Aquamarina, I thought Id give my honest opinion of the hotel.
First things - Many people go to the Aquamarina because it is reasonably priced in comparison to the larger resort hotels in the centre of the hotel zone (about $150 for 2 all inc. as opposed to $300+) So this needs to be borne in mind by the people who have concerns about the plushness of rooms and reception.
What I can absolutely say however, is that $ for $ this is one of the best hotels I have stayed in for its ambience and dedication to making sure that you have a holiday to remember. It must be said that this is almost wholly due to the staff - and I mean all the staff. The waiters are allways on hand by the pool, the barmen are friendly and have your drink ready and poured - before you can even ask for it sometimes! The cleaning staff, the restaurant staff are all very courteous. The real stars of the team though are the entertainment team. Whether it's the games during the day or the trips out in the evening (try at least 1 trip out in the evening) they are always on top form and looking after every one of their guests.
With regards to the standard of food, I would say that it is varied and tasty - although as with any all inclusive, you really have to try and eat dinner out at least twice a week, so that you can taste the wonderful local restaurants. (my favourite is the shrimp bucket about 2 miles up the road)
I've just tried to get a room at the Aquamarina for my trip on the 7th of Feb, but it's full - enough said!
By the way, a word of caution - Sometime in March or April there is an American holiday known as the spring break. This is where 10's of thousands of American 18-20 year olds descend onto Cancun and other unfortunate places that have an 18 plus as opposed to the US 21 plus drinking age - and turn it into a 24/7 ---... I cought the tail end of it on my first visit and great if you like it, but a nightmare if you don't - Be aware
All the best - John

We stayed at Aquamarina the begining of this year (2005), and have to say that the hotel is fine.

For the price we paid (approx £800 each for 2 weeks all inclusive inc. flights etc) I have to say that I thought it was fantastic value.

The hotel itself is what you would expect from a 3 star. We never had any problems with the food, although very rarely did we eat dinner as we were filling up at lunch and from the snack bar (Burgers are great...tastes just like Wimpy burgers in the UK!). The few times we did eat dinner there was always a good selection and everything we tried was nice. Breakfast was the best meal, loads of pastries, cereals, and hot food. Omlettes cooked fresh to order. Help yourself to fresh juice, tea, coffee and toast.

The beach was good, although couldnt really swim in the sea there due to a rather 'cramped' feeling (with little piers and boats) but this only added to the charm and gave you something to walk along and watch the fish, and watch the birds dive-bombing for their next meal!.

The rooms are clean, have a tv with a few English/American Channels and most if not all have sea views. Again they are typically 3 star but for the amount of time you spend in them , they are perfect. If you want masses of room, a jacuzzi and such like, pay twice as much and stay in a 5 star hotel. BUT, is it worth the extra when all you do is you sleep and eat there?

The pool is nice, with a good swim up bar where the barman will poor you a drink before you even order! (if he knows what you are drinking, which after one or two he does). Its a great place to socialise. There is entertainment which gets a bit dull, but you have to hand it to the staff and their enthusiasm. They dont pressure you to join in at all, so you can just get on with relaxing and enjoying the sun with a cold drink in your hand.

On a final point, there is a small hut on left as you walk on to the beach which offers water sports and excursions. We had one the the BEST trips from here where we went out on a catermaran for the day over to Isla Mujuers. We had all drinks included, the best lunch I've ever had (seriously fanatastic food) and to top it all off, the skipper just made the trip. He got everyone drinking his tequila, rum and God knows what else, and was sooooo funny. He really made the trip. You could tell how good he was as out of 16 people on board, I saw at least $100 handed over in tips as we got off the boat. Cant recommend this enough. We paid $25 each I think, which is fantastic value. I think most tour operators offer this trip, but will charge you double, so do yourself a favour and just walk up to the hut and book it. Snorkelling equipment is included, and is was some of the best I've ever done. Hundreds of fish includeding parrot, eels, angel and barracuda.

In short, would I stay at Aquamarina again? YES! and without a doubt, do the Isla Mujuers trip from the hut on the beach in front of the hotel. Also, go to Isla Mujures for the day, walk left off the boat towards North Beach, stop for a drink in Jaks (a great little bar - Corona 50 pence a bottle!) and then keep walking along the beach and follow it round the corner to, what can only be described at the best beach I have ever seen.

Strongly recommend. Any questions, post them here.

Yes. If the rooms are ready. We checked in early. What I didn't mention before was we had two rooms one for our teenage sons and one for us. They originally had us on separate floors. But once my husband explained, they gladly changed our rooms putting us closer to our boys even though it meant a room upgrade for us! We weren't charged the upgrade price (I don't think...I'll have to double check with my husband). The new room wasn't ready so we just got our wristbands and went out to the pool and ate. My father in law's room wasn't ready early so he did the same thing but we were early so no big deal. Some of our party were able to go right to their rooms because they were ready even early.

Not really but it is right in the beach and just a short walk of the ferry to Isla Mujeres, the La Isla Mall is only 10 minutes away taking the bus that passes in front of the hotel and there are some water attractions.

Hi, so sorry for the late reply. It is about 10-15 minutes on a bus to the main Cancun nightlife spot. But the buses are literally every minute or 2 all through the night, amazing service!
