Hacienda Xcanatun, Angsana Heritage Collection, earns rave reviews for its cleanliness, with guests consistently applauding the immaculate upkeep. The stylishly designed rooms, complete with outdoor showers, are popular among travelers, although some suggest improvements in lighting and air conditioning. While the beautiful pools and serene yoga deck are highlights, the underutilized spa and gym, along with service inconsistencies, have been noted. The hotel's atmosphere is generally appreciated, but the loud music can be a detractor for those seeking tranquility. Visitors' perceptions of value vary, with affordability being praised by some, but others point out concerns regarding service and location.

Hacienda Xcanatun is truly an oasis in hot Merida. We stayed with a friend and enjoyed it very much, the rooms were beautiful, we stayed in the old building, the garden is lush with many interesting native plants, there are 3 swimming pools - of which one is Olympic size. Two restaurants, we enjoyed Casa de Piedra, very friendly and attentive staff. A 3-day stayed totally recharged us, it was a complete enjoyment and relaxation. All the staff were amazingly attentive and helpful.

Excellent hotel on every level- good value and unique. Staff were superb.

Best checkin experience I had since the beginning of the new regulations. They are attentive and are following all sanitary procedures in a very elegant way with no need to mention the words pandemic, virus, covid or any other potential trigger words. With ‘new situation’ they cover every interpretation of this period with so many differing interpretations. Well done Banyan.

Whoever says Mexico is careless about the virus doesn’t know what they are talking about. Temperature checks and sanitizing gel are obligatory every time you enter any establishment but they are presented in a friendly and caring way. Europe has a lot to learn.

Our trip to Merida was a last minute decision to get away from the coast and hurricane Delta. The way that we found out about this place was that the people at Banyan Tree Mayakoba recommended it. I felt pretty lucky to have gotten the last room.

When arriving, I was worried because it's relatively far out of town and the surrounding neighborhood is a little shabby. My concerns were alleviated once we arrived at the property. I will list the pros and cons.

Pros
The staff is polite and tries hard at customer service, from the bellman to the restaurant staff to manager who is great at remembering guest names. They were flexible in accommodating us for an extra night due to our hotel in Playa del Carmen being closed the day we were supposed to check in. Our room was spacious with a sitting room, comfortable bed, large bathroom with skylight, and covered patio with a light and fan. Wifi was good and strong when the power was on. This may be silly, but I loved that they had a garment steamer rather than an iron, so convenient. The cocktails and food in the restaurant are good and reasonably priced. The grounds are pretty and nice to walk around.

Cons
For it being one of the more expensive hotels in Merida, there are things that could be improved. Certain touches just seemed incomplete. I'm not sure if it was due to the storm, covid, or recent rebranding. It was small things, like having a mini bar menu, but nothing in the mini bar. Televisions in the room description and picture, but not in the room. I don't normally watch television on vacation, but my husband would have liked it while being stuck inside. There are pretty fountains on the grounds, but they are empty. One of the pools is completely drained. The other pool wasn't cleaned until around 5:00 the day after the storm cleared although it was hot and sunny. There were a lot of power outages while we were there, but I don't blame that on the hotel as there was a storm.

Overall, I would definitely consider coming back here if we ever find ourselves in Merida again.

Dear Ms. Claudia On behalf of the entire staff we sincerely appreciate your valuable feedback and the time you took to share with us. We are very happy to read your thoughts and definitely we will put extra attention on those small details you mention; it is true, we have some new practices due to COVID in order to maintain our guests safe during the stay. Regarding the Minibar we put a QR code, as minibar products are items that might be touched, it is necessary to remove them, about the empty pool initially was part of the COVID practices but Eventually we will be reactivating our new normality according to governmental regulations. TVs were part of the new renovation and now they are installed¡ Ms. Belle, it will be a great pleasure if we have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future as Mérida is a beautiful and traditional city to enjoy. when we checked into this hacienda for 5 nights, we were absolutely thrilled. Very nice suite, well appointed room and spectacular garden. The next morning was a rude awakening. At 8.00 AM the nearby construction work, bulldozers, drilling etc. started. When we complained at the reception, they simply said nothing, nor offered anything. We realize the hotel is very annoyed by these construction works, all the rooms suffer from it, but they they could have been apologetic, offered a free cocktail or something. Definitely not up to the service of a 5 star hacienda they pretend to be, and not up to Banyan Tree standards.
On the restaurant service, we can be quick, it is very slow, 20 min wait between a margarita order and its delivery, then 35 min wait for the food.
We ordered a few times for delivery to our terrace. They managed to serve us a yoghourt and granola (nothing else on the order) with a fork. Another time our breakfast order was only half delivered. Another time the order was delivered with cutlery but no plates. The staff is very poorly trained, they have no clue how to serve food or how to deal with customers.
Given the lousy service and arrogance of the reception staff in not recognizing the issues mentioned by the customer, I strongly recommend NOT to stay at this hacienda.
Lastly a very positive comment, a compliment really for Salvador, one of the bellboys. He certainly behaves as if he is well trained to provide a 5 star hotel service . Remembering our name, always greeting us, handing us over fresh towels when we casually told him we were going to Progreso beach

The hotel is easy to find following GPS. It is located in a suburb next to Merida, a car or taxis are must if you need to get in/out as there almost is nothing around.
The hotel facilities are amazingly charming, you can immediately feel the luxury of finishing and feel warm as soon as you cross the gate, then step into the lobby.

We have booked a Kij Junior Suite and were immediately offered an upgrade to Sayab Master Suite, which is quite of a difference as there are other room classes between the two. Very nice of them.

The suite was as spotless as everything else in the hacienda, with modern luxurious finishes… too good to be true.. indeed… as the room was facing a construction site (within the premises of the hacienda, most likely an extension) and that drilling and machines noises countinued even after sunset… we were far from the hacienda experience we were expecting.. the gardens and exteriors are limited due to the construction and will be even less important once the new rooms(?) will be built.. a pity that might turn it into just another luxury hotel.

The restaurant experience was a mixed one as the waiters were cold and failed explaining dishes, the food was average giving it’s price. Also note that on the two nights we were there, the restaurant was hosting corporate dinners, so a bit loudy, but ok. The breakfast was okay, but confusing information were provided as 1st morning when we asked to add the note to the room (it wasn’t included in the room price we paid), the waiter insisted it was included, we even asked him to verify and he confirmed. On the 2nd morning, it was no longer included, so quite confusing here…

We also booked a romantic dinner next to the outdoor chapel, but unfortunately weather was too bad, with lot of rain, which obviously isn’t hotel responsibility. The restaurant staff set up a romantic dinner at what seemed to be a meeting room (or a manager office).. to be honest this completely destroyed the whole experience. We would’ve preferred they apologize (which we would’ve understood, totally not their fault) or have a nice table at their restaurant rather then being behind closed door.
Anyway, they charged full price for the scene even though it’s clearly not the same experience.

I was expecting a lot from our stay at Hacienda Xcanatun during our Yuctan trip.. I have to say the hotel has lot of potential, and lot of charm, but is beeing destroyed with the extension, and with poor attention to guests (it was the coldest personnel we face in 2 weeks in Mexico), I can relate some examples :
When we asked recommendations of things to do in Merida, they handed us a 50ish pages magazine (loaded with ads) asking us to read it first.. seriously?
When we ordered from room service, the plates weren’t collected, as consequence the coatis spread the leftovers all accross the corridors.

So yea it can be a cool stay (confortable but noisy), but they need to be more caring about attention to guests (not just by offering upgrades, but by being more human)

This place could be so much more.

The main part of the hotel is a historic hacienda with beautiful exteriors and verandas. Semi tame Jodi’s roam the gardens, so it could be cure and tranquil.

But there are some unforced errors.

The rooms in the hacienda could be forgiven, it’s tough to get lighting, layout and furniture right in a pre existing space. But for goodness sakes, put in a couple of lamps….. our room is like a tomb.. They have popped down 25 modern villas that clash architecturally with the hacienda. It’s a nice pool, but the hip hop music being pumped in to cover the construction noise includes the f-bomb in the lyrics over and over. Oh now they are playing the theme from Kill Bill.

This music palate is dumb. Like the architecture choices for the new building, it seems to reflect the choices of someone who is trying to turn this Hacienda into something it never was, and shouldn’t be. They should restore the bocce court and not plan a disco.

Staff is pleasant but clueless. 20 minutes to get a menu or coffee at breakfast and ten minutes with my wife at the podium to get a check printed. Only one person appears to be authorized to provide these - the most senior of the serving staff. Those below him can’t serve without breaking the hierarchy. A very nice young man who actually put a fork down with my plate half an hour after I arrived (thanks)gave me an empty pepper shaker. The point is that the staff is very nice but they are not being well managed.

Now at the pool for half a hour. There’s only one other couple here, but none of the three staff members have approached to offer a towel or a drink.

Ok credit where credit is due. Armin finally came around and pleasantly offered. But seems like the service ethic is generally lax, though folks are very nice.

Spa and gym sit empty. The venues are attractive, but there’s very little effort to promote the services, and the spa pricing is daunting. If a massage was reasonably priced, I would probably get one.

I used to run a hotel management company….I’d put this all on them.

Check in took 1.5 hours because my room was not ready. They tried to give me “an upgrade” to an older room when I had booked a new one, without informing me. I booked a naj king room on booking.com. According to the photos the room has a pool view and a private balcony with lush tropical plants for privacy. The photos are fake since all king rooms are on ground floor with no view. The room and bathrobes was dirty, the toilet had a horrendous sewage smell and worst of all they had faulty electricity sensors so every 30 minutes the lights and AC cut off after a huge bang sound. This went on all night and I got no sleep (not to mention the ongoing contruction noise).

I reported these issues to the receptionist around 830pm who informed me there was no manager on duty (what?) and maintenance would come. No one came. Meanwhile I tried to order a bottle of wine and was told the only option cost $100 USD! The next morning I was given the run around by the manager who eventually turned up to my room without asking and entered even though I was not dressed properly. He proceeded to check the water and inform it was hot (as I had mentioned the shower was cold). Yes that’s because it stays hot for about 5 minutes at a time and that’s it. He did nothing to fix the sewer smell or anything else. He told me he would try to find me another room.

3 hours later I was still waiting. I did the long walk to reception to get an update. Eventually (another hour later) I said I wanted to go home however they would only refund me 1 of the 2 night stay which is extremely upsetting since I had reported these issues the previous night, and was told nothing could be done because no manager was there.

Because my check in took 1.5 hours I had been given a food and beverage voucher at the time of checkin (so before any other issues) and they also tried to say that would no longer apply and my 1 nights refund would have that amount deducted. I don’t believe Ive ever experienced such a bad service. The least they could have done is provide a full refund (2 nights). Absolutely disgraceful.

Dear Ms Webber First of all we are really sorry that you didn't spend a good time during your last stay with us even though all the efforts that we made since the beginning to offer you a really Xcanatun experience, that's why we gave you a upgrade to a better suite than you reserved, as we made to our preferent guest when we have availability. As we are part of Banyan Tree Group, we are strongly committed with our global sustentability program. We are the first luxury hotel in Yucatan that have motion sensors in the rooms in order to avoid the waste of energy that could happen. We understood that for you it was uncorfortable and we offered you the option to turn it off, even if it was against our sustentability program. Despite of all the efforts that we made to surprise and delight you, we knew that unfortunately your perception of our product and service was not what you expected from us and that's why managment approved the early departure without any penalty. We hope that you could give us a chance in a near future to show you the real Xcanatun Experience. Do not hesitate to contact us first. Best Regards Waded Cano- Front Office Manager

Beautiful, elegant property, large pool is gorgeous, very relaxing and calming, very romantic, excellent service, I liked that more locals come here to visit, it doesn't feel touristic, has more authentic feel. The property has obviously the hacienda style but also mixed with Asian style, which I love. The spa was beautiful inside, and also an amazing experience, was second best massage I have ever had, the Banyan Tree in Bangkok is better, the experience was similar but not on the same level as Bangkok. The food was excellent, flavorful (except the verde chilaquiles, a little bland, but that probably not the region's specialty), the pibil and lime soup was best I ever had next to Kinich restaurant, I loved the molletes, it was really good, different style than Mexico City but very good and filling, loved the pickled tomatoes on top. I love that they support the local community and buy food from them, this is really nice that the hotel gives back to the community. My suggestions, since they are expanding is add free environmentally safe citrus spray to guests for mosquitoes like they do in Thailand, we stayed in the Xcanatun room with private pool, maybe have that pool a little heated, the bathtub in the room really for just one person, maybe make it big enough for couples to take a bath together, that would be really nice. Also, I am very picky about my cocktails, I get it, this location is in an obscure place, but it is part of Banyan Tree Group, people are paying a lot for the rooms, they need to up their game where drinks are concerned, why can't I get a mezcal sour (with egg white) - maybe they should compare with Mexico City's Four Season's Fifty Mils Bar and Carlotta at the Ritz Carlton, drinks like Lola Bunny with carrot juice, habernero syrup, beet shrub, lemongrass, gin or spicy cucumber mezcal sour at the Ritz, with chapulin salt - the cocktails at Xcanatun they think adding Sprite to cocktails makes it a good combination, Sprite is worst thing you can add to a cocktail. Also you shake the cocktails with ice but generally if you put ice in the cocktail it will melt and water down the drink. Albeit, my husband said this is the best room he has ever stayed at, that this was better than Qualia in Hamilton Island....

What a beautiful place the Hacienda Xcanatun is! If you are looking for a true Yucatan experience in Merida, the Hacienda has it all. Full of history and charm, the place is so relaxing and yet so close to Merida and all the sightseeing around the Yucatan region. The Suites are beautifully appointed and all renovated, the restaurant is delicious, offering true local food and all the team is extremely professional and kind. I highly recommend the place!!

We stayed in one of the new villas and the room was beautiful, with a bathtub, inside and outside showers, very cool design and a big patio. It was quiet and peaceful. The property is big and has a typical hacienda mustard-terracotta colors, very stylish, great to walk around. There are 3 pool, one of which is Olympic size and for those who love to swim - it is a spot! There is a restaurant by the pool and in the main building. The duck tostadas, avocado toast, Chilean salmon we tried were very good.
