We generally choose adult only all inclusives because we find the vibe to be substantially more relaxed and sophisticated. Because of its reputation for great food, however, we decided to give GV a try. Along with Leblanc, Secrets and Excellence, GV is among the best. But our feeling about adult only properties remains intact. GV is a very large resort made up of three hotels, each with its own lobby. Ambassador (for families) and Grand Class for adults are in the main building near the beach and largest pool complex. Zen, which also houses the spa and its own pool is more than a mile away inland surrounded by jungle. It is not walkable, but there is a 24 hour shuttle service that is very reliable and fast. The entire property is beautiful and immaculately manicured. Rooms are modern, well appointed and clean. Butler service is provided, but there is a communication disconnect between the butlers and the house keeping staff. The result was no turn down service or ice on three nights of our week. We opted to hang out at the adults only pool at Grand Class. Completely different vibe than the main pool family area. Nice touches like sunglasses cleanings and treats. Pool waiter service was very friendly and attentive, although we must note that on at least two occasions the pool concierges ignored us upon arrival, even as we looked right at them. We would have appreciated some live music. The beach is protected by a seaweed screen and wave barriers. We suggest walking around the point to the left as you face the ocean, to access Mayakoba beach. Miles of sugar sand and clear blue water with few people. Pools are heated in the winter. Restaurants are spread between the hotels, with Chaka at Zen, and others in the main building. Only the French and Cucina de Autor are kid free, so no screaming, crying or running around. The food at all restaurants was very good but, truth be told, offerings at the kid friendly restaurants was somewhat pedestrian. The truly great meals were at Cucina and Chaka with chef Carlos and waiters Miguel and Martha. Chaka menu is regional Mexican; creative, tasty and unexpectedly good. Cucina de Autor is a true gourmet experience, as good as anything here in Vegas. Chef Nahum Velasco, who is also sous chef de hotel, is a talented culinary artist, inviting you to put yourself in his hands for a journey of taste and creativity. If you are able to wrangle a second visit, the menu will be different than the first. We also enjoyed the work of Sen Lei chef Jonathan and waiters Ismael and Christian. We usually enjoy breakfast buffets for the variety, but here the kids made for a much noisier and harried experience. We found it curious that some really good evening musicians were located in the Ambassador garden area, with nobody in attendance. One thing to note. If you book through a third party, you will not receive credit in the loyalty program which itself is run by a third party group. They will claim not to know what you paid for the trip, and the property itself will not lift a finger to help, despite having received payment for your visit.

We wanted to find somewhere where we could relax for a week with the children with great food and found this place! It was fantastic. It ticked all the boxes. We were greeted by Alexa who was our personal concierge who was on call for the whole week and was so helpful and engaging. Thank you Alexa. The pool was so relaxing and the children had so much fun. Luis, Miguel and Tayde were fantastic and super attentive. There were plenty of activities for the children and adults. Nicholas who ran the daily activities did a great job. We had such a great time and would definitely recommend it and look forward to going back. Thank you

Thank you, Jason, for sharing your praises for some of our outstanding staff, as well as your glowing photos of the property. One of your stunning pictures is of our majestic gates, which truly have to be the most eye-catching as one drives from Cancún toward Tulum. You can pass the many nice facades of various hotels, but none transmit the majesty that the Great Wall of Grand Velas does. As our guest, your arrival is filled with wonder and mystique as you pass through our gates for the first time. Once in, all the beautiful things that you envisioned start becoming reality, making you feel that there really is no reason to leave the property. Once you're checked in and ready to begin the adventure, that's when the magic starts, and you just know that you chose your resort very, very well. Jason, on behalf of Alexa, Tayde, Nicolas, Luis, and Miguel, I thank you for trusting Grand Velas to meet and exceed your lofty expectations. We look forward to guiding you into our main gates once again, but until then, we continue to place ourselves at your service for all your future needs and wishes. Take care, RODOLFO GONZALEZ DIRECTOR GENERAL GRAND VELAS RIVIERA MAYA

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left everything was absolutely perfect. The resort is absolutely beautiful and immaculately maintained. They achieve the always elusive feat of being at full capacity, but it never seeming crowded. The food was great and our kids who are picky eaters always found something they enjoyed. What sets this place apart from the other places we have been to is one word - SERVICE. I understand it’s the “job” of the employees to make you feel special, but I truly got the feeling they enjoyed doing it. Our concierge Alexa was always available with fantastic suggestions, daily schedules and even arranged for a doctor when one of our kids was not feeling well. She made us feel like VIP’s the entire trip. Orlando and Jorge at the pool seemed to anticipate everything we needed and were amazing. All of the wait staff at the restaurants were great but Alonzo at Azul was especially fantastic. The kids club staff was a 10/10 and I wish I had gotten more of their names but Abigail was a superstar. One of the unexpected highlights of our trip were the amazing pool activities for both kids and adults by Nicolas! In summary - if you want a place where both kids and adults can have a fantastic time, this is the place to be.

Ben, we couldn't be more delighted to hear that you felt your holiday was perfect from your arrival to your departure. Much of that success was the result of the service philosophy we employ at Grand Velas. You are quite correct in saying that the staff genuinely enjoys staying one step ahead of your wishes by being proactive and using that elusive 6th sense that, for generations, concierges have applied to deliver the best for their guests. That trait is best exemplified by our very own Alexa, who, day in and day out, displays a talent for juggling several tasks at the same time. And when the resort is quiet between seasons, you can find her sharing her experiences and advice with some of the newcomers to the staff. And that is what nurtures teamwork and inspires passion for the job. Ben, we look forward to reuniting you with the ever-dynamic Alexa. And you can be assured that all of her colleagues will be right there when you need them. As always, we remain at your faithful service. Thank you! This entire resort property is really exceptional in every way. From the moment you pull up to the property and see the entrance, it is obvious that this is above and beyond most any other all-inclusive resorts in the entire region. The staff during our stay were super attentive. Alexa, our concierge, was really accommodating when it came to helping us plan taxis for excursions to Xplor, Coco Beach, and Playa Del Carmen for getting a fairy to Cozumel when our original departing flight was cancelled last minute out of Cancun. Not only that but she helped us with new restaurant reservations after our plans changed so that we could still experience some really wonderful dining at Frida, Chaka, and Sen Lin while there for a short 4 night stay. The room service food was excellent as well and even though we didn't take advantage of the pillow menu options, it was nice knowing it was there. The in suite snack/beverage bar was also really nice. Try the dried papaya and pineapple and jicama chips too! We don't drink alcohol and so the staff at restaurants took it upon themselves to offer us really fun drinks based on our taste preferences anyway, making each dining experience special. While we were there we had an exhilarating time with our catamaran captain David that took us sailing/snorkeling in some decent windy/wavy conditions. I'm forgetting some things but other highlights include the Zen Spa Water Ceremony, the human LED show on the beach one night, and the Pre-Hispanic show on the beach another night. This resort has a lot of family friendly activities as well as things for adults. I didn't get to ride the bikes or do the eco-tour, but that's more reason to go back! And remember to put down your phone and watch the iguanas or pelicans and you'll maybe even be lucky enough to see the local spider monkey family that frequents the Zen portion of the resort. Cheers!

Eric, there are thousands of reasons why you should come back to Grand Velas Riviera Maya, the first one being your overwhelming delight on this first trip. Your wonderful review describes scores of themes and topics both within the resort and outside. Having a concierge as well-prepared as Alexa allows you to simply make the decisions, and she will do the rest. That said, Eric, we want you to return and explore more of Grand Velas and perhaps gain an even longer glimpse of our family of spider monkeys and maybe a glimpse of one of our nimble deer in front of Zen Grand. Until then, we wish you and your good friends all the best for an outstanding summer. Thank you! RODOLFO GONZALEZ DIRECTOR GENERAL GRAND VELAS RIVIERA MAYA

At Grand Velas Riviera Maya, we take pride in offering our upscale clientele an all-inclusive experience that's defined by refined abundance. Our family of four (2 parents, 14 year old and 10 year old) had a fantastic spring break trip at Grand Velas. This was our first stay (and our first trip to Mexico) and it did not disappoint. Before our arrival, we worked with the hotel to make reservations for airport transportation, dinner reservations, spa appointments, and an excursion. We started about a month in advance and had no trouble getting arrangements made. Airport transport went smoothly -- despite customs at the Cancun airport taking 2 hours, we had a driver waiting when we emerged. On check in, we met Aaron, our concierge for the week and he gave us a tour of the main areas and our room. We had reserved an Ocean View w/ Pool in the Ambassador section but were upgraded to an Ocean Front w/ Pool in the Grand Class section, 3rd floor. The room was great and had plenty of room for the four of us to relax. We tried all of the restaurants while we were there. Our favorites were Cocina (tasting menu), Piaf (French), Bistro (breakfast and lunch only - amazing service), and Azul (breakfast and lunch buffet). In the middle were Frida (Mexican) and Lucca (Italian). Our least favorite was Sen Lin (Asian), due to the smaller portions and some service issues that were very different from the other restaurants (items missing from order, long periods of time before food was served and between courses). We arranged one excursion through Blue Dreams, the on-site travel agency, to Xel-Ha, a water and nature theme park. Everything went smoothly from the Blue Dreams side, but we didn't have the best time at the theme park. It was mostly a case of "not right for our family that day." If you're thinking of going, I would encourage you to consider the private transportation option, as the group transportation makes for a very long day. We departed at 7am and were back at the resort after 7pm. Also, Xel-Ha appeared very well run, but be aware that most of the cool, interesting activities have an extra cost, on top of the admission price. I can't say enough good things about Aaron, our concierge. Every day, he sent us information on that day's activities and a reminder of our dinner and spa reservations. And he was always available for questions and requests like where to find the in-room dining menu, getting a glass of wine delivered to the room, changing spa reservations, and getting our room serviced on a schedule that worked for us. He really elevated the experience and we were so grateful. We spent all of our pool time at the Ambassador pool. My 10-year old LOVED the swim-up bar, where he could request smoothies, milkshakes, and shots of Coca-Cola at any time. The pool area was sometimes crowded but if we couldn't find seats, we would speak to one of the employees providing service in the pool area and they were always able to find us chairs. My husband and older son rented a jet ski one afternoon and a different day we rented the motorized pool scooters (I'm blanking on the name) and both were a lot of fun. We didn't spend a lot of time in the Teens' Club but did stop by on our last afternoon. There were video games, a pool table, air hockey, foosball, and more. Definitely try out the spa and get there early enough to enjoy the water journey -- definitely an experience. My husband had the "Manly Massage" and I had the Honey Experience and the Vitamin C facial. I was so relaxed by the facial that I fell sleep. We're already planning a return trip in January.

Thank you very much, Mary, for selecting Grand Velas Riviera Maya as the setting for your very first excursion to México. As first-timers to this beautiful land, you certainly like to delve into everything you can, and I'm delighted to read that you arranged most of your reservations and tours beforehand. There certainly is much to see along the coast of Riviera Maya, and I'm sorry to learn that you didn't feel that the trip to Xel-Ha was quite what you expected. I am thrilled to read, however, about the fantastic service Aaron provided you and the superior cuisine you encountered almost everywhere throughout the resort. I am aware of your ordeal at our Asian venue, Sen Lin, and have already taken steps to streamline and improve the service issues that you experience. Mary, all of us, particularly Aaron, will be excited to have you return with us next January. You can be assured that now that he knows much about your personal preferences, your complete itinerary will be waiting for you, just how you like, upon your arrival. Until then, we eagerly place ourselves at your faithful service for all your future needs and wishes, RODOLFO GONZALEZ DIRECTOR GENERAL GRAND VELAS RIVIERA MAYA

And our server at Lucca and Chaka were great as well. Room service and our room was great and always clean.
