The Grand Sunset Princess garners mixed reviews, with guests calling out the spaciousness and cleanliness of rooms, while also noting they can appear dated and occasionally suffer from noise and mildew issues. Service experiences at the hotel vary, as some staff members receive praise for their friendliness, whereas others are criticized for a lack of professionalism. The resort's pools and grounds, along with local wildlife, are popular among travelers, yet some feel that the hotel's additional costs do not provide good value. The atmosphere and cleanliness are also points of contention, with the former receiving both acclaim and critique, and the latter generally seen as well-maintained despite some housekeeping inconsistencies.

This was my first stay at the Grand Sunset. We actually ended up being put in a room on the Riviera side. We had a swim-out room in building 6 and it was incredible. The pool was nice and warm and got all the afternoon sun. Basilio and Laura came around to take drink orders regularly. The pool was clean and well maintained. We booked a king room and ended up with two doubles. They came and pushed them together for us but there was still that bit of a gap in the middle and we felt like we were sleeping separate at times. We appreciated the well stocked fridge and the room was tidied daily. In speaking with other guests it does seem like some people get extra perks based on who is cleaning the room. A little towel animal or something. We didn't get that which was disappointing. A consistent service standard would go a long way. We opted to dine at Chill Out the first night and enjoyed having beach access the remaining week. The padded chairs and prompt service were nice to have. Our favourite a la carte was the teppanyaki show at Miso for my sisters birthday. The food was great and the portions were huge. We paid for shrimp and it wouldn't have been necessary. The buffets and other restaurants were good but nothing spectacular. I appreciated the ability to make arrangements via Facebook messenger and email prior to our arrival. They were quite accommodating for our small group. I think we would choose platinum or villas should we return. Thanks to all the staff for a great stay

Overall: Beautiful grounds, well kept and clean. The resort is making an effort at being environmentally friendly, Reusable cups, no straws and opinions for laundry. Variety of options here depending on what type of vacation you want. Quiet places to sit at night, a party in the square or a disco. Lots of choice. If you have mobility issues may not be a resort for you unless you have a chair. Elevators available

Rooms: Large had a deluxe suite in 2000 building. Quiet, well serviced. On the 3 level view of the pool. Room was in the middle of the resort, so depending on your speed, 5 minutes in either direction to the beach or the main building.

Food: Buffet, always a great variety of food, should be no issue for even a picky eater to find something to eat. Fresh Fruit and veggies everyday. The mangoes were amazing! Al a carte, went to 3, seafood, Mexican and gourmet (la Fleur). Best meal of the was definitely at La Fleur. Others were just OK. Taco station, 2 beside the pools, and beach food was available but did not use.

Pools; We are not pool people but were impressed by the amount of pools available. The people there certainly seem to be having fun. Of course lots of towels on empty seat through the day as people tend to do. It was really hot walking up through the pool area back to the rooms. Bars in the pools always busy.

Beach: Beautiful beach could walk in either direction for a distance. We would arrive around 11 am to beach and could find a seat, maybe had to move around to find shade but there was availability. usually ended up on the far edge of the resort beach, which was less crowed. The are some rocks and seaweed but it is the ocean and that is a natural occurrence. The water had an enclosed area, it does not get very deep and to the edge of it is a small coral reef so watch your feet. Staff do well keeping it clean but smokers could be more aware about disposing of cigarette butts, lots of ash tray available, please use them! Beach bar always a long line up, just walk a few minutes into the resort other bars much quicker. People selling stuff on the beach if you are interested, they were not aggressive a simple no and they left you alone

Entertainment: Opinions available throughout the day, went for a quiet vacation so didn't participate in much but lots of people having fun.

Gym: Probably the best resort gym we have been to, lots of options for equipment, just the typical human issue of not wiping down equipment when done, not the fault of the gym.

Staff: Courteous and friendly

I stayed at the Grand sunset February 7-14 2020. The resort is beautiful. The rooms are very spacious (Double junior suite) and modern. We had a few problems with the safe in our room, the reception made sure to resolve the issue within minutes, then followed up to make sure everything was okay. The food was average; buffet was ordinary, The Mexican & Steak house weren’t the best but the Italian was very good. The Chill Out was the best diner amongst all but you do have to pay (Very reasonable prices for the quality and portion of your meal); this gives you access to the chill out beach club throughout your stay which is great. All week, the waitress by the pool was Yara, amazing service ! She was always topping off our drinks and bringing us new ones, by the 3rd she had already memorized our drinks and always new what to bring us. The beach was beautiful, there was seaweed only on the windy days but they clean it up very quickly. I definitely recommend this resort for family’s and couples. I will return next year !

We stayed at this resort the second week of January 2020. It was our first time on the Sunset section, but we have previous stayed at the Riviera and Yucatan adult's only so we had an idea what we were getting into. This time around we had a Villa Laguna room. The room was was great but at first we were given a smoking room and the AC was terrible, we were required to fully check out by noon the second day and wait until 3pm to check back in. The room they gave us was vacated by 10am and was cleaned by 1215. We saw the staff in the room from the pool. So why make us wait 2 hours plus even though I asked?
The second room had a clogged drain but it was fixed in minutes.
The food was just ok and we had breakfast at the Chill out all except 2 days. We could find no bacon at all either at the main or Riviera buffets. Never been to a resort without bacon before.
The Chill out dinner was good, the lobster large and the porter house steak huge, over 2 lbs.

Shows were alright but not great.

What makes the resort so good is the staff, I think they have the best employees anywhere and this was our 11th visit to Mexico.

The resort has been showing its age since our 1st visit 7 years ago but for the price it was very good.

Note that this is a very friendly family resort, if staying as adults with out kids do the Villas, much better than the Yucatan side and cheaper

This place disgusting and unsanitary. For Five star hotel it wasn’t living up to its standards. We found a used condom behind a trash can and an empty Pepsi bottle left on the counter to our “cleaned room”. The hotel could accommodate me and my family to have joining rooms which was important as one of my daughters were boarding with her grandfather. There were no drawers to unpack our cloths and the cupboards were falling off the hinges. There were no robes or slippers provided as well. This pjs e left a dirty rag on the coffee table of my fathers room. The restocking of towels were not provided and we had to constantly call for service. For an all inclusive , room service was being charged to us and not included for my young children who were tired and couldn’t make it to the only timing given to us for dinner at their restaurants(which they said was full, and when we went it was 30% full and minimal staff).

The pools and the hotel it self were design awful for any one who has a disability. There were no stairs with railing in the pools other than two of the many they had. Towel service was very far from the areas of the pools that were child friendly. And the resort only had two elevators located at either ends of the hotel and the restaurants and entertainment were on two floors. You had to walk to the elevators to the middle of the hotel and then have to walk back to get the elevators to go to you desired floor and have to walk back to the middle to enjoy the entertainment. So inconvenient. There’s no use using their shuttle buses and it doesn’t even run on the schedule that’s posted. And again still have to walk a fair distance to get to where you need to go. There was no pool side service and or at the beach. You had to wait In line for 20 mins at their only beach bar to get your drinks.

The buffet was awful. They had a 8x10 printed paper on top of their food station and numbered the items and had drawing of the plates and you had to find the item and correlate it to the picture. The labeling was so poorly printed and in small print you couldn’t even understand it. And with children it wasted so much time. On top of that the food was mainly pork and beef and really didn’t accommodate for people who didn’t eat that. They did have fish and chicken, but not in the authentic dishes that you would like to try.

There was minimal employees and can never find anyone to help. If you weren’t staying at the family club house or the platinum club you could have access to the kids area and would have to pay extra if you wanted to use it which was told to us it was included. Also if you wanted shrimp at tempanaki you had to pay extra. It just seemed this resort didn’t care about pleasing their customers and always trying to up sell you to something else. Awful resort and would never recommend this place.

Enjoyed our stay first week of February 2020. The rooms and resort are very clean and comfortable. We went with family and stayed in the Grand Sunset Princess and the kids and grand kids stayed at the Family Club. We were still able to get rooms pretty close to each other considering it is a very large resort consisting of the Sunset, Riviera, and kids club which are all side by side. We did see the monkeys first day which was fun but that was the only day they visited. However, there is plenty of wildlife which the kids enjoyed. I was told they can go weeks without seeing monkeys and then they show up several days in a row. The pools and garden areas are all very beautiful and clean. The reason I wouldn't give this a five star is a few reasons: First the concierge service upon arrival was not good or friendly. We did receive champagne and little desert dish the following day which may be the result of that, but not sure as there was no explanation for the delivery. If from USA bring plenty of small bills for tips if want to get good service. ATM's will only give large bills and not easy to get change. The front desk may give change but from my experience they never had quite the full amount resulting in a guaranteed tip to the attendant if you wanted to get change. We tipped our room cleaner every day except one as we needed to get change and did not get wash cloths or our bar restocked that day. My husband and I always tip especially for good service. Last reason for not giving five starts is the food is not great. For dinner definitely make reservations and would try to contact them by email ahead of time to do so. The buffet is good for breakfast, and the pool side grills are great for lunch, but for dinner the restaurants are much better than the buffet although still not 5 star and the seafood is as others said not great. Fruit which you expect would be good is also not. Went to Belize 3 weeks earlier and the fruit and seafood was delicious everywhere we visited. Last and probably one of the most annoying issues as others have noted are the timeshare sales. You really have to be rude to ignore them as they said things to me as "won't you shake a Mexican man's hand", which makes you feel rude but it is flu season and as nice as they pretend to be they are just doing anything to make you stop and talk with them. Another man rubbed my back as we walked which I felt was very inappropriate. You should not have to deal with sales on vacation and in today's world it is rude for any stranger to make physical contact with you. The resort should not allow this and if there was a reason I would not return, this would be it.

Overall, good for families. If my kids wanted to go back I would but I would be a little smarter this time and wouldn't feel rude at all in telling time share sales to stay away or I would get someone from front desk. Hope this helps others that may be considering a visit.

This vacation was nothing but amazing! I must say going into this vacation I was very hesitant because of all the negative reviews, but we did not run into one problem! I’m glad the reviews did not stop me from booking!

We had a junior suite deluxe with a swim out pool which was worth it because you are guaranteed to be close to the beach and of course right by the pool. When we arrived we had a smooth check in and were greeted by friendly staff. We did arrive early so our room was not ready yet, but they told us to enjoy everything on the resort and check back soon to see if it was done. We did get to check in a little early. Our room was very clean and we had no problem there. Each day our refrigerator was restocked with four bottles of water and other beverages. The beach was beautiful, but just like any resort if you want front row you must get up early other then that seating isn’t an issue. There was one beach bar and grill too. The pools were all so big and never felt too crowded. The main pool had a swim up bar and the bartenders were super friendly and fast. The nightly entertainment was great, each night they had a different live band which was nice to just sit around and listen too. As for the food, there was multiple options chose from in the buffets and 6 different restaurants. I enjoyed this because it gave you something different to try each night. The food was good nothing to special but no complaints. Overall, this vacation was amazing the only complaint I would have is the constant cigarette smoking. The whole resort is open which allows people to smoke. I do wish the resort had a designated smoking area because it was starting to get annoying, everywhere you walked smoke was getting blown in your face or enjoying the band and smoke was getting blown in your face. Over all definitely try this resort out it was a great vacation!

I loved this hotel. We visited last summer, it is beautiful, the staff are great. There are lots of pools and restaurants.

However, compared to the many, many luxury all-inclusive resorts I do think that as a couple, this would only be worth the money if you book the villa package. It is an amazing huge suite with an outdoor rainfall shower, a large jacuzzi inside, and large balcony area.

You also get free included room service, a concierge for the villas (there aren't too many) at the villa exclusive pool, which had great cabanas you could book. It was a shame though that there isn't nearly enough for everyone who had a villa, and this was during off peak season (September). There is also an a la carte breakfast at the beach restaurant which is much better than the buffet and it is also included for free for the villas.

We are both vegetarian and the food was not amazing but this is to be expected, and much better than lots of other resorts we have been to. We had a couple of restaurant reservations done for us by the concierge before we arrived which was great. We have been to resorts with better a la carte, I think it was a shame there was no outdoor eating (I don't know if this is still the case). I felt the restaurants were kind of like imitations of restaurants. They should definitely expand their vegetarian choices in these. The teppanyaki show restaurant is a must though! Also, not many were open when we visited in September due to off peak, which did disappoint us, as there was no mention of this on the website beforehand as we checked everywhere, as we had had this problem in another country the year before.

Nightlife was a bit meh which was a shame. There just wasn't much on each night, the theatre performances were strange, the club was quiet.

We had one issue where there were no cabanas left and a lovely family said we could have theirs after they checked out at 12, and so we told the concierge this. We went down at 12 and he had given it to someone else, telling us that we were not allowed to dictate the beds in that way, even though we told him the day before and he said nothing and wrote it down on the reservations. You can also book them only a day in advance, yet, there were some couples that seemed to have the same ones booked out for the whole week which I just found unfair. That was the only issue, we did complain at the hotel to the head concierge who was very kind and sent us champagne, but obviously this did not resolve the issue, and as it was the last day of our holiday, it was a poor ending to an otherwise lovely holiday.

I really do recommend as it was a stunning resort and think it was great value for money, and we are super picky about where we stay! Just a couple of things would have made is 5*.

First I wish I could rate a 4.5.
We returned last Wednesday. Our first day I was overwhelmed. I usually stay at large resorts but this seemed too big. After 3rd day it was good I got my bearings. Lots of walking but there are carts available every 10 to 15. We stayed in platinum. Loved that area and all the staff but we preferred to 2 larger pools as the atmosphere was a little more fun and upbeat then at ours. Although the beds around that pool looked pretty awesome. I believe we hit all the ala cartes except the fondue which was booked for first night, thought it at lobby but it was back by our room so chose to skip and hit the buffet. Food good there to but it's very noisy. Enjoyed all meals except were not overly impressed with the lobster we paid for. We were only bothered once by time share and although persistent so were we and we were not bothered again. They did very well coping with COVID as we watched them put out hand sanitizer stations and also noticed railings were being washed, including the bridges to the beach. My 2 recommendations to bump me to a 5 are that no kids be allowed in sports bar after 8 and that they have more designated smoking areas as we found there was smoking all over and some were not respectful of not doing it where the rest of us had to breath it in. We also ended up with a smoking room which I'm sure they would have moved us had we asked. Room didnt smell like smoke but odd time you had to pass through smokers on way to room. There was not one staff there that didnt deserve praise from the grounds keepers to conceirge they all had a big part of us enjoying our stay. We kind of want to go try different locations in our travels however we would return if we come back to the area. Also the Disco was awesome. I danced all night when there and find the ice cream parlour. Its worth it too.

I loved this resort! The nicest one I’ve ever been to!
It’s huge! I did 15,000 steps a day without trying!
Lots of pools to chose from and to a to do! They have activities and even rain day schedules. There’s a casino and sports bar for more adult fun.
We did the hydrotherapy baths in the spa and a couples massage in the bungalows, that was an unbelievable day!

Keep in mind this hotel has time share sales. They are not overly pushy. I listened to the presentation and was rewarded with the spa passes, a voucher for my son to go to the “good” kids club on the family side and $50 American voucher for spa treatments! Also a nice welcome breakfast and a bottle of tequila. The timeshare even seemed worth it but upon researching reviews didn’t want to go ahead because we’re not risk takers.
You get to book 3 a la crates ahead of time but I’d you go to the counter each day you can snag cancellations and stuff so you can do them every night if you’re flexible.

The buffets have a theme every night to keep you interested and they seem pretty good with allergies. I’m lactose and gluten free intolerant and I didn’t have any issues.

The staff was always so pleasant! The grounds are so well maintained! It has an animal habitat so we saw monkeys, iguanas, coati, and even a crocodile!

We did the deluxe junior suite and the room was big and nice! We had a 2nd floor room so that sucked for all the stairs every way with a lazy husband and child lol but that’s my only complaint and it’s not their fault.

Access to the family club varies from $150-200 Mexican pescos/day per person. You get to use the ice cream shop, the pirate buffet, “good” kids club, and fun pool with slides (we received $600 mxn p toward this for doing the presentation).

The evening entertainment was excellent! My favourite was grease and the Mexican market! It’s also good timing for little people. One starts at 730 for kids, 8 for something else and 820 for the big show where they have popcorn and drinks available.

Honestly this was the best trip I’ve had with my family. I highly recommend this resort!
