My wife and I stayed at the Iberostar Tucan April 3-11. This was our 11th stay at an Iberostar. We have spent the last 30 years going to various all-inclusives in Mexico and the Dominican Republic. The Tucan is a beautiful property and well cared for. We had booked the Tucan, but we Actually stayed in the Quetzal. It was very nice. The beach was beautiful , very little seaweed. The food was very good, only issue was the Smokehouse Restaurant . Not so good. I would say they should turn that into a steakhouse. This is the first all-inclusive I have been to that did not have a steakhouse. The pool is big and very nice, little deep in the middle. The staff is wonderful . I want to mention some of these amazing people. Israel and Jose at the swim--up bar. These guys are awesome. So fun and attentive. Alondra, Luis,Israel,Arleta Andy,Frida, and Alycia on the animation team ,energy and kindness. Mirian is a waitress at the resort and she is so very nice . Took great care of us . To all my amigo and amiga.....Que Pasa Calabasa ! Lol.....Cony and Alfredo at the reception area .... Thank you for all your help and kindness. Overall I would say you will enjoy this resort. I did wonder why they did not stock my fridge with beer unless I called.

Hotel's Favourite
2023 Iberostar Tucan Playa del Carmen, Mexico November 19 to Dec 17, 2023 With the exception of 2020, we have stayed at this resort every year since 2016. MOST IMPORTANT FOR A FUN TRIP – DOWNLOAD THE APP YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE A ROOM NUMBER, LOG IN AS A GUEST ROOMS: Large, bright and airy. They are working hard to modernize all rooms. The hotel opened in 1997,and she is showing her age a bit, but nothing to dissuade from the comfort. Most rooms have 2 super double size beds ask for a King when you book. Also a TV, fridge, air conditioning, ceiling fan, no charge safe, iron, ironing board and shower (no tub). Do take a power bar if you have lots of electronics in case you are in one of the older rooms. Keep your doors closed and your curtain closed during the hottest parts of the day and you’re your room will stay cool. Patio doors have a safety lock at the for nighttime. GROUNDS: If you are a nature lover, this is a place for you! In the span between the rooms and the lobby, you have a jungle. Complete with all sorts of critters, iguana, flamingo, ducks, peacocks, coatimundi and agouti, that wander all over. Please DO NOT feed them, theymay become aggressive and it is sad to watch them take food out of an unsuspecting child’s hands. It is so joyful to have your morning coffee and a peahen walks up to look at you as if to say “good morning”. There are many cats as well. You will hear the Howler Monkeys before you see them. They go from tree to tree all across the resort. There are pools with fish and turtles at every corner and you will find larger turtles near the sport pool. There are some parrots in the daytime in the lobby . The gardeners work hard to keep the ground in tip top shape. Do bring repellent, as the mosquitoes like the jungle as much as I do. The floors are a beautiful marble, but please be careful, very slippery when it rains There is a special section set aside for children with its own fenced off pool and play area THE POOLS The main pool is huge. For the most part, the pool is 5 feet deep, the shallow areas are near the towel hut and outside the Uxmal Restaurant. We love having lunch and watching the kids play games in the pool. There is a lovely small kiddie pool and a playground with sand just for them. There is a separate adults only pool bar and there is a sports pool as well. Omar, the pool concierge does his best to help out with seating – please see them if you can’t find a chair. RESTAURANTS There are two fully enclosed buffets and 5 al-a-carte (Japanese, Italian, Mediterranean, Smokehouse and Mexican – you need to make reservations for these). Check the apps for menus. Reservations can be made at the Concierge desk or on the app. Smokehouse and Japanese have a pre-selected menu. The food is carefully prepared and there is plenty of variety. They really work hard to provide for special needs (dietary, babies…) do not hesitate to ask. At lunch time, there is also an outdoor burger stand – no cover ups required! – with burgers, hotdogs, nachos, salad and fruit. Also, several times a week, they serve Paella and Mexican food near the beach. BARS/DRINKS There is no wait service at the beach or the pools. You can find ice cream and flavored water in a hut near the towels and there is a walk up bar near the beach. Bring your own reusable mugs/cups and straws. Remember – whatever they make with alcohol, can be made without alcohol! ENTERTAINMENT: There are many daily activities – on the beach, in the pool and at the gym. Tennis, horseshoes, rifle shooting, darts, volleyball, ping pong, billiards… check the app, or ask the very friendly Star Friends – shout out to the whole team! (Very enjoyable, even if you just watch!) The Kids Club provides some wonderful fun and activities, and the opportunity to meet new friends. Saying hello to Gabi, Sarah, Paro, Vivi, Nicole and Karen. (Ages 3 – 12 and activities are divided by age) Evening entertainment in the theatre rotates weekly and watch the app for entertainment in the lounges. SUPPLIES There are a few shops that carry a lot of necessities and souvenirs, as well as a photoshop. Also, about a 15 minute walk from the Hotel, there is a small shopping center, where you can purchase almost anything. Prices are reasonable and you can avoid the hubbub of town (like I do!), although many enjoy spending an afternoon in Playa Del Carmen (5th Avenue) about 5-10 minute drive) and taxi rates are reasonable ($5). EXCURSIONS Can be booked right at the resort. There are many folks who can help you choose. There is a desk in the lobby and a counter near the Uxmal Restaurant. Just ask a concierge if you need anything! PEOPLE: There are so many people who work so hard to make our trip enjoyable, I am going to miss naming someone (please forgive me), but I wish to express appreciation to: Jessica, Alexi, Maria Jose, Vegonia, Gaspar, Adriana, Mario and Javier for their outstanding Club Concierge services Star Friends Entertainment Giovanni, Andy, Ivonne, Charley, Luis, Arlette, Mariel, Abraham, Frida, Alicia, Alandra, Martin, Beto, Angel, Jesus and Waldo. Rebeca, our room steward did an excellent job of keeping the room clean and the fridge filled. To hotel Concierge – Janaire, Seyme, Scanda, Luz, Yaheli, Yuremi, Jorge, Alfredo, Edgar and everybody at the reception concierge desks – no matter who you are, they are pleasant and will get you what you need. To the Cart drivers and Bellhops – Luis, Alex, Raul, Eliver, Eduardo and all. The staff in the dining rooms work so hard to ensure you have what you need. Shout out especially to Apolonia (Chef), Jorge Roldsn, Mirna and Leticia in the morning Cozumel Buffet, Jesus at lunchtime in the Uxmal and Laureano and Francisco in the Cozumel Buffet in the evening. Thanks to all the others who took such good care of us as well. All the bar staff, especially Lucely, Consuela, Micaela, Yadira, Mariela, Neicey, Shamady, Ricardo, Gamamel, Victorio, Manuel. Special shout out to the gentleman who work endlessly to keep the pool clean and to the men who clean up the seaweed at the ocean every day. Thank you to the Managers who make this place shine (literally at Christmas time) ; Anna, Thiago and Priscilla, who take the time out of their day to say “Hello, how are things” and listen when you tell them! Hello to Ariadna in Public Relations. DON’T FORGET Make sure you download the Iberostar App for the resort. For the most part, works wonderfully and provides lists of all activities, meals, evening shows, etc. I found myself taking part in a lot more activities, simply because I did not have to go looking at the board. If you don’t know, please ask. Sometimes there might be a bit of a language barrier (I have taken to using Google translate – many of the staff are very chat friendly!), but if you make the time to find someone to help, your holiday will be much more enjoyable and if you are friendly, you can literally make someone’s day. We have already booked our next visit! See you on Nov 14, 2024!

Perfect holiday in every way! The hotel adjoins the quetzal hotel and you share all amenities. This hotel is spotless. Super clean, staff tirelessly work to a high standard. We had an amazing time - we travelled with my disabled mother, special thanks to Omar who noted we were trying to find a shaded seat for her and he immediately provided us with shaded sun loungers which he ensured was reserved for the remainder of our trip. Outstanding service and we were so appreciative. The food was of a very high standard - we ate buffet for lunch and breakfast and al la carte for dinner. Lots of variety on both. Always different pasta and pizza options as well as 2 fresh fish options, chicken, steak, salad etc. cakes, always fresh fruit. The a la carte are a turn up and queue apart from the Japanese restaurant which you need to reserve. My favourites were Mediterranean and Japanese. Japanese is like a show, my 4 year old son was very proud he caught the rice ball they threw at him in his mouth first go. Room was very clean, slightly dated but didn’t bother me. Air con was good. Big room. Didn’t spend time on the balcony but looked nice. Liked the stocked fridge in the room. Lots of wildlife - we saw monkeys, coatis, agouti (not heard of them before) peacocks and flamingos. The hotel is located in playacar which is an area which is in a tourist enclosure. There appears to be security gates to access and if and proof of reservation is needed to gain entry. It felt very safe. We went to playa del carmen by taxi ($10) it was ok. Need to haggle for everything including the taxi ride back. I guess that’s just the Mexican way. Will definitely recommend and come back.

This was our first trip to Mexico and although we have been to other places in the Caribbean we were unsure what to expect and reviews of all hotels we liked at can be variable! But we need not have worried as our stay here was amazing from start to finish! My husband and I have 3 children aged 13, 10 and 7 years old and everyone loved it! It was a lovely time of year to visit as it was hot and sunny but not too humid. What a fabulous hotel! It is so clean and well cared for. We stayed in adjoining rooms and the rooms were nice and air conditioned and had a stocked fridge at all times! They had everything you would need and looked out into a tropical area where you could watch the howler monkeys play in the trees from your balcony! They liked to hang out in front of our rooms in the morning as the sun came up! We really liked the eco efforts the hotel made and the refill water from the coolers was a great touch. The jungle area was fascinating and added another fantastic dimension especially for the children. They got to spot all sorts of wildlife wandering around on the way to the pool or beach - such as monkeys, coatis, agoutis, peacocks, flamingos, tortoises, Iguanas and geckos to name a few and this was a constant source of amazement to the kids! I was apprehensive that due to this area we may get feasted on by mosquitoes but we only got a couple of bites each and the hotel provides a natural repellent lotion which worked a treat! I think we got most of our bites at the airport to be honest! The beach is wonderful - just a tropical paradise of white powdery sand and turquoise sea! This hotel do a great job of removing the seaweed that you find along this coast to leave the sea so clear with little sand banks to paddle to, truly beautiful. The pool is large and has different areas and was great for the kids as they were able to stand and play in the water as well as swim in the deeper areas. The team constantly ensure the pool area is clean and tidy and meticulously look after the pool water. There is a swim bar area for adults and a kiddies pool with slides for little ones which is fun! Whilst you sit in your lounger you can see the monkeys swinging in the trees above - so funny! The all inclusive cares for everything you need and we were wary that we might need to pay loads of extras but apart from giving tips to the staff we did not have to pay for anything. The bar near the pool and beach only ever had a queue of one or two people, and there is also an area where you can help yourself from the machines too! The cocktails were great and I sampled quite a few! You could eat somewhere at all hours of the day and most of the night! The ice cream bar was enjoyed by the kids everyday! The buffet for breakfast lunch and dinner was excellent and had something to please everyone. We visited the Mexican, Mediterranean and Italian too and had great meals. There is a beach bar serving hotdogs and burgers too which is great if you don’t want to have to go to the main buffet and there is a smaller buffet near the beach which was great too! I have coeliac disease which means I have to have a gluten free diet and this can be difficult when travelling. In the buffet there are lots of allergen signs next to the foods and the main chef took me around and was very knowledgeable in telling me which foods I could have and gave me deserts and offered to cook gf pasta etc from scratch for me. I never got ill and always had plenty of choice! He was so kind and thoughtful and didn’t make me feel like an inconvenience which you often experience as someone with coeliac. It was always delicious and everyone loved it! You do get asked if you want information for the spa etc a couple of times a day if you are by the pool or on the beach but if you say no thank you - you are never hassled by any staff. The enthusiast entertainment team were great and ran so many activities for kids, teens and adults and there was always something to do if you wanted! We just wanted to relax but it was fun seeing some of the pool side games in the late afternoon! We never really bother with evening entertainment at hotels but there was always something on - if you wanted to watch it! The fire show on the beach was really worth watching though - get there early as it gets really busy! There really were no major downsides to this holiday at all - just a couple of points. If you are travelling with a young teen they count 13+ as an adult for the all inclusive. When we checked in they queried if we had only paid enough for a child instead which we knew we hadn’t but couldn’t easily find the evidence. After a bit of back and forth and looking at how much we paid they agreed that we had paid the adult fee for her. We booked through an agent - but might be worth taking proof that you had put their age in as 13 months on the agents website to show them! Although they have a no reservation policy for sun beds this is impossible to enforce and people get up at 6am to reserve at the beach and pool. I’m not sure what the answer is to this really! The hotel can’t possibly remove all these towels and then re wash them! It’s unenforceable really! We happen to always wake early and start the day so we never struggled to find a lounger! We made some amazing memories on this adventure that we will keep with us forever and I am so grateful to the staff for making our stay so special in this beautiful country! X

This my first time here, my sisters fourth and our friends third. Loved this resort! The grounds were beautiful!! So lush and well kept! The beach is lovely to walk along and swim in - it was very windy during our stay (first week of April) so the waves were amazing and so fun! The pool is big and the water is heated - hate those icy pools at some resorts. The rooms were nice and cleaned well each day. The food was phenomenal! We ate at the buffet 4 nights, the Japanese one night which was very good and fun! The Italian - very good! And the Mediterranean which was okay but I wouldn’t say I wouldn’t recommend it. It was nice that there are no limits on the a la cartes. You do have to wait a bit if you arrive after 6:30/7:00 but worth it and not too long. Have to make a reso for the Japanese which we did our first night. The staff were all super friendly and helpful! Thanks so much! I’m sure I’ll be back!

This is a review for Iberostar as a company, not Tucan which was a five-star experience. AVOID IBEROSTAR HOTELS ALTOGETHER. They attempted to scam us the day before arrival to Tucan in Playa del Carmen. We couldn't log into the app, so we called to get help with this. Upon calling the reservations department, they told us that our reservation in fact was not confirmed (despite receiving a confirmation email when we booked months prior). They told us that when we booked online (directly through Tucan's website), someone else had booked at the very same time; this caused our booking to be invalid and not in the system, according to them. To confirm our booking, we needed to pay the current rate, which was 70 USD extra per night. We were freaking out that we had just flown all the way to Mexico and did not have a confirmed booking, and totally outraged that they were JUST NOW telling us this fact and demanding more money from us. After MUCH arguing and demaniding to speak to a supervisor, and then their supervisor, they agreed to reduce this rate by 50% (first sign this was a scam). We stood our ground and they finally waived this altogether. We then demanded to speak with the front desk at Tucan, who said our reservation was indeed confirmed and we were good to go. So that proved that the whole "you have no confirmed booking" was all a scam by the reservation department of Iberostar. This caused us the most insane amount of stress the day before arrival; half the family was in tears, and we were about to pay this extra money they claimed we owed because we had no other choice (or place to stay being Easter). Luckily, we held our ground, and getting through to our resort directly resolved everything. This experience completely caused us to lose all trust in Iberostar in general, and despite a wonderful vacation at Tucan, we will NEVER book a stay at any Iberostar in the future. It's such a shame that they run such a shady operation and try to get more money out of customers who are already paying such a premium. Such a shady dishonest company. Sadly, when we explained our experience at the front desk of Tucan, the receptionist completely disregarded our complaint and changed the subject! So that was disappointing. But aside from that horrible initial experience, we had the most amazing time at Tucan. Can't say enough good things about this resort. Lovely staff, beautiful grounds, and fantastic activities for both kids and adults. However, we won't book again because who knows what scam they'll try next time. They've lost our trust.
