The Ocean Maya Royale is widely celebrated for its prime location and impeccable cleanliness, with travelers consistently commending its well-kept facilities and stunning setting. Guests have called out the spacious and clean rooms, modern bathrooms, and a vibrant atmosphere fueled by lively entertainment. Although the hotel's amenities, including pools and dining options, are generally praised, some guests suggest there's room for improvement in seating and overall value, especially regarding the cost for 'privileged' status. Service is typically seen as friendly and attentive, though it's not without its occasional lapses.

First let me begin by saying the staff were amazing and very approachable. The hotel is a nice size and very well kept. Lots of loungers and Bali beds available, and beach was very nice. However we booked Privilege and ended up at the back of the resort. What made it worse was we were in room#101. The stores room is right behind and there was traffic from 6:00am to around 1:30 am. Also the service elevator was across the walkway from us. Very noisy with the carts, walkie talkies, and so forth. They might as well been in the room with us. This room should not be used for guests. No privacy on our deck as workers constantly coming by, with garbage and those carts. Also according to the website, Privilege has access to top shelf liquor which is not the case. We feel this is misleading potential guests to book Privilege. On the day of check-in, we asked to be moved to another room, and even pay the difference if need be. The response was come back in the morning. We all know how that goes. The person checking us in wouldn’t even look at the computer to see if there was another room available. 5 days into our 10 day stay was finally able to talk with manager Luis. I laid out our issues and he did say we could change rooms, who does that halfway through their vacation? I feel he didn’t care as they already have our money. He tried to put it on AirTransat and then on our travel agent that we didn’t get what we requested at time of booking. Thing is you can only request a certain room with no guarantees. So how is our travel agent responsible? Booking Privilege is not worth it to be at the back of the bus.

Hotel's Favourite
This was our 28th visit to OMR since we first visited in 2011! And the single most important reason we continue to return over and over is THE STAFF! We cannot overstate this. Every single person who works at OMR goes above and beyond to make sure each guest has the best experience possible. Let me start with arrival at OMR. The valet/bellhops run to greet us and are always amazed when we arrive for a 10 day stay with only two backpacks. (Vacuum bags are the key). We drop our bags with them for safekeeping until we have our room assignment. Then on to Guest Services to check in. We are Privilege but we know most of the staff on both sides. The head of Privilege Guest Services is Luis and he is a true gem. He and his team, especially Omar, are all smiles when we come in and have our paperwork ready to sign. Drinks are soon brought in and all we have to do is get our room key and we are ready to roll. Over the years we have stayed in lots of different rooms. We are happy with any room we get because we don't spend much time there. We usually get a couple of extra blankets for the bed because the AC is nice and cold. On this trip we stayed in Room 607 which has a renovated bathroom that is very nice. The balcony overlooks the main sidewalk and it's an easy walk to any area of the property. We always have our first and last dinner at La Dolce Vita. Captain Jorge Casanova is a friend going back to our first visit and he started spoiling us back then and has continued to spoil us by always trying to give us a good table, always making sure our glasses are full and always making sure we have a delicious meal. His team of pro waiters work like a well choreographed ballet! Alberto, Jose, Lydia, Jared, David all participate to make sure every diner at LDV has attention. Even when the restaurant is packed and there is a line to get a table, these guys are cool and calm and manage to make it look easy. And if there is a line to get in, you just sit in the lounge area with the amazing ocean view, have a drink and chat up new friends! For breakfast, we use Hacienda buffet. It has so many choices that I guarantee you will not go hungry. I like to get a custom omelet. Lots of fresh fruit and veggies too. All the staff at Hacienda are also special to us! From Raphael and Sandi who greet us to Vincente, Alfredo, Charley and Octavio who serve us - we love you! For lunch, we were surprised by the new option at El Charro. It was formerly a small buffet but it is now a la carte. The options are several types of tacos and a very nice green salad as well as hamburgers. We loved the shrimp tacos best. We also ate lunch at Privilege a couple of times and the menu there also has some new items like coconut shrimp and bass croquettes. The day staff at Privilege also take care of us on the beach. Managed by Captain Carolina who is another longtime friend and she is assisted by Dani, Sofia and Augustin and sometimes Roberto. It is such a joy to interact with you each day. We also ate at the Blue Moon. Captain Javier is another special friend and his waiters Esubeio, Ermelio and Jose take excellent care of us. We love to cut up and joke with them and even though we don't speak Spanish very well, we manage to communicate! Yokosoo has become another favorite spot for us because we can go there and get sushi. In fact, you do not need a reservation for the hibachi if all you want is sushi. That makes it very simple. The wait staff there are also treasured friends: David, Manuel and Mary. Shout out to Daniel, who is one of the hibachi chefs, for putting on a great show! The dinner menu at El Charro has also been revamped. We ended up making a meal out of several appetizers washed down by some lime margaritas. We want to recognize all the bartenders who keep us well hydrated including Oli, Octavio, Jorge, Tiger, Antonio, Eber, Miguel, Jonny and Diego. I bring my own sparkly plastic champagne flute and carry it with me all day. As we have gotten to know the staff over the years, we have been through all kinds of life events with them from births to deaths. Each one has a unique story and if you take the time to listen, you will be blessed. There is one girl I got to know a couple of years ago who hands out towels by the pool. I noticed she can speak English well. We started talking when we were here in December and I asked her if she had any plans to move up to another position at OMR where she could use her English skills. She told me she was applying to be a butler and I was very excited for her. So imagine how happy I was when I arrived for this trip and found she has begun her training as a butler. Way to go Brenda! There are also a couple of sweet girls who work very hard in the lobby at night that we know as Jojo and Ana! Both are truly lovely both inside and out! Such energy! How do they keep up with all those drink orders??? We were also pleased to see that Augustine is back in Mikes Cafe. He left last December but he is now back where he belongs! Mikes is a great place to get coffee and a yummy treat. We don't normally spend time in the sports bar but we do want to mention Cristobal and know that he does an amazing job there. We also don't normally stay up for entertainment but this time we did see the fire show and the Broadway show which were both fun. We did eat dinner at the Hacienda buffet a couple of nights. The food there is always outstanding. Again, so much variety, grilled options, tons of desserts. The only downside is that it is loud in there and not as intimate. Sometimes, we go there just for the desserts! We also recommend that if you are thinking of booking OMR, go to their website and sign up for the H10 Club. Just give them your email. You get automatic 5% off and free transfers. They also send you emails about special discounts. We find we save a lot of money by doing this. There is also a FB page called Fans of Ocean Maya Royale that has lots of photos and information. It's always a pleasure to return to OMR and then to share our experience with others. We feel that we were meant for OMR and it has become a second home for us. It is more than just a place to vacation. It is an opportunity to reconnect with friends, meet new friends and strengthen bonds that will last a lifetime.

The staff was so fun, and engaging. Especially Kendell and Adela. Activities were nearly constantly going on around the pool. The resort itself is beautiful, and a lagoon is within walking distance to go check out. Only con being most of out group got sick at some point on this trip.

Obviously the major issue I have with the resort is the fact that both my husband and I got poisoned on the second day of our honeymoon, which most obviously destroyed our newlywed spark. To give context out of my own stupidity one day I was ill after eating an apple without skinning it, I was sick but not food poisoning sick.To say we were so high from our amazing wedding is an understatement and within a day of arriving we were so sick. We are 100 percent that we got it from the buffet, my husband had eggs that morning and he was projectile vomiting in while visiting Cancun (we had eaten nothing else). I had eaten only yogurt that morning. That evening I got food to the room (latter found out from buffet kitchen) and was vomiting within 2hours. I found out other people had also been poisoned that day too. The other restaurants in the resort are okay, one was nice enough (Mexican) but the Italian resultant food came out cold all of the time. We SO scared to eat, we lost weight on our honeymoon as we only eat when we needed to, out of fear of loosing more time being sick. In my opinion, by my Irish standard this hotel is more like 4 star not 5 star. The resort is pretty but not modern, there are much nicer resorts. I would be confident that I could have stayed in a much nicer resort for the same price (and not got food poisoning). Staff were hit and miss, so were so so nice some grunted at you. This resort does not provide transport from the airport which I later learned lots do. I have to say I was a little disappointed that the resort didn’t make the effort to through a few rose petals etc in our room when they new it was our honeymoon but obliviously they had no obligation, whereas Canadian airlines shared our excitement and gave us a glass of champagne. If you are looking to stay in the resort only, and feel entertainment is important to you, this resorts entertainment is okay, we usually went to bed as it was not worth our time. The fire show is good, the rest was poor. Other than food hygiene the resort was clean and tidy at all times. Overall for the price of a once in a lifetime holiday, I believe you could do WAY better in another hotel/resort. We went on to stay in a tulum air BnB and had the time of our life, for a 1/10 of the price.

OK....I am actually here right now, April 7 to 17 and so far I am a little let down. Normally, the Blue Team is all over and engaging but so far, I have hardly seen anyone. The activities have been limited, for example...today was supposed to be live DJ at 2pm and crazy game at 2.30....team got here at 3pm approximately. The team used to walk around all the areas to engage guests but I've only had one person talk to me this time and only because I was sitting near the activity....basically I feel like we have been ignored this trip. My butler is awesome...no complaints there. Food is hit and miss but that is normal. Night entertainment is the same as the last few visits. I was hoping there might have been some changes but I can't stay up late enough to participate. The resort next door starts their entertainment much earlier and I wish OMR would start a band or a dance at 8pm versus 10pm. Mexican night was disappointing as the vendors were so limited compared to previous visits but I don't fault the resort....I guess perhaps vendors don't want to come by. I will post a bigger more formal review after our stay...maybe it will get better.

We just returned from our first stay at OMR and would definitely return. We had a Privilege package and definitely recommend the upgrade since you get upgraded alcohol, a private section at the beach and pool and a butler (if needed). We had the H10 app, so you can book directly through there for restaurants. The breakfast buffet was awesome. We ate at the Italian, Japanese, Steakhouse, and Mexican. The Japanese was better than expected, and tacos in Mexico can never go wrong. Italian was so-so and the Steakhouse was not great. I recommend staying away from meat. The staff everywhere are super friendly, attentive and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. We also had spa treatments which were outstanding (see Wilfredo by the pool, and he'll get you a discount). Shout out to Omar, Fabian and Octavio for their assistance.

Pros - The staff were friendly. Beds and pillows were good. It was great seeing the wildlife at the resort - Coati, Iguanas, etc. Cons - Waited a long time for the room, despite paying for the privilege benefits. We were constantly being hard sold things like tours and massages from staff, even interrupting reading on the beach. The food was terrible. What was supposed to be hot was often room temperature or cold. The pork and chicken tasted the same, flavorless. We ended up taking a taxi into Playa Del Carmen for dinner every night in order to get good food and cocktails. It was never quiet at the resort. Either you could hear the DJ at the Ocean Maya Royal main pool or you could hear the resort next door from the Privilege beach. Beware there is an extra charge they'll ask you to pay when you check-in that's in the fine print when booking.

Yes, we are a couple that keeps coming back every year if not more often. We did try going next door one year, but the whole stay we wished we were at OMR. So, after traveling the world for 30 years we now have found our second home. The one thing I look forward to from the day I leave until I return is breakfast. You walk through door, and you are greeted by Sophia and her wonderful smile. She brings you to your table where you are met by one of the great servers Alfredo, Carlos, Jose, Alberto, and Francisco. They are best, by the time you get back with your food your coffee is ready and anything else you need. Now for breakfast itself. I grab my plate and walk by the egg station. As am walking by the nice lady (can’t remember her name) behind the grill smiles and holds up 3 fingers and I shake my head yes. I go about getting some breakfast items and when I return my 3 eggs are ready. Such great service, she is the best. Great job Rodrigo making El Charro a great place for lunch. The best hot sauce and it is perfect on the chicken sandwich. Oh, almost forgot thanks for opening the sports bar early so we could watch the game. And to Tiger for bringing us beers from the lobby bar every ten minute. Wow that was over the top. Special thanks to the lobby crew. Octavio and Jorge will always keep your drink full and will have it waiting for you when you arrive. Yovanetti (Yo) and Ana will keep you laughing all night long. Jesus has grown into very good bartender and a very funny man. Eber, we have known him since we started coming to OMR and he runs the pool bar. What a great crew – Jonny, Miguel, Diego, and Andres. Margarita and Kenndell keep us laughing all day long around the pool and Adrian works at privilege now, but always comes by to say hi. He is like part of our family. Thanks OMR for upgrading the gym. It is a great improvement. One last story about how great the customer service is. Couple years ago, they switch vodka brands which was no big deal. We were sitting in the lobby one night and the bar manager stopped by to say hi and see how our vacation was going. As we were talking, I asked why they switch brands. Without another word she walked over to the bartender and handed him a key. Oli (miss you) went into the backroom and came out with the old brand. He poured us drinks and said your vodka is in this cabinet. Went to the pool bar the next day and Eber reach under the counter and said this is for you guys. For the rest of the trip, we had our brand in every bar and restaurant in OMR. WOW!! THANK YOU Ayusi that was best customer service we have ever had. Miss you all – No Ma’s Toma’s

Pros: 1. The Blue/Azul Entertainment team! This team is the best entertainment team we've ever come across, and we've been to multiple resorts in Mexico. Kenddell, Adela, Jules, Margarita, and Arturo are a blast. They make the activities pool incredibly fun and are a huge reason why we had so much fun on our vacation. These team members need a massive raise. You will have a blast when you meet them during your visit. 2. The grounds in general are pretty nice. Well-kept and pleasant to walk around. 3. It's not a very long drive from the Cancun airport, which is a huge plus. It's also a short distance from Playa Del Carmen 4. Mike's coffee is a nice little spot to grab a quick bite or coffee. 5. They have an Ice Cream station near the pools, great ice cream. 6. Like I mentioned in #1, the activity pool was a blast if that's the type of vacation you're looking for, since the Blue team did such a great job. However, there is a quiet pool too if you don't want to party. 7. The drinks in general were good. 8. The sports bar was awesome! 9. The dress code for restaurants was not enforced. Which was fantastic because it gets hot in Mexico. So being able to wear shorts as a male was amazing. 10. The staff overall are fantastic people. Bring lots of tip money. If you don't tip in your culture. Well, get used to tipping here because the staff deserves it and NEEDS IT. They don't make enough. Negatives: 1. The biggest one, I'm not even sure if it's the resort's fault. But we suspect it might be. Nearly everyone on our trip got sick for at least 12-24 hours. Stomach issues. We suspect this is from food contamination at the buffet/pools. However, it also could have been some sort of virus going around the resort. We suspect it was the food, unfortunately. 2. A huge issue we found at this resort was they seemed to skimp on giving out water bottles. This was a massive disappointment and led to us not having water one night. I needed to walk to a bar and ask for a bunch of water cups since the sink water is not safe to drink. We have not had this issue ever in Mexico. But it was an issue at this resort. We would even call the front desk/room service to request water bottles. They would say they were going to bring some but never came. We had to ask three times once. We traveled with a large group and everyone in our group had the same issue and complaint with water. 2. The food overall got kind of boring compared to other resorts. For breakfast, it's just the buffet unless you pay extra to be "Privileged". It gets boring after a while. The sit-down restaurants were much better than the buffet but not as good as other resorts we've been to. The exception here is the Hibachi. The Hibachi was fantastic! 3. Wait times for restaurants can be VERY LONG. If you have even a semi-large group (4 or more people) get to the restaurant you want to eat at early or you might have to wait over an hour to get food. I wish they allowed for reservations. 4. While I mentioned the grounds were nice, the rooms and other buildings around the resort are starting to seem dated. They could use a face-lift/renovation. 5. This is a smaller resort (which is actually kind of nice). The issue with a smaller resort is that they lack space for more dining options. Wish there were more options for breakfast and maybe 2-3 more lunch/dinner spots. Hard to get around this one, but mentioning it. In Summary, this is a nice resort. The Blue Team made the trip memorable. However, I don't know if we'd return due to the negatives listed in this review.

Your praise for them is well-deserved, and we'll be sure to pass along your kind words to them. It's also great to know that you enjoyed our well-kept grounds, convenient location near the Cancun airport and Playa Del Carmen, and the various amenities like Mike's coffee and the ice cream station. We're delighted that you found the drinks enjoyable and that you had a fantastic experience at our sports bar. However, we're deeply sorry to hear about the challenges you encountered during your stay, including concerns about food-related illnesses, issues with water bottle availability, and the perceived lack of variety in dining options. Your feedback regarding these matters is crucial, and we'll address them with our team to ensure that necessary improvements are made. We understand your disappointment with certain aspects of your stay, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you experienced. Please know that your comments will be taken into serious consideration as we strive to enhance the overall guest experience at our resort. Once again, thank you for sharing your valuable feedback with us. We hope that despite the challenges, you were able to create some fond memories during your time with us. Should you reconsider and choose to visit us again in the future, we would love the opportunity to exceed your expectations. Warm regards, Ocean Maya Royale.

We were both ill during our stay but thank you to the staff for looking after us so well. We have already booked for next March and look forward to seeing everyone again.
