Hotel needs to enforce no smoking policy! Numerous smokers under the palapas!
The entire hotel is very clean and has a very good location. Thanks to Salvador and his entire team for making us feel at home

Restaurant is ok. But not great.
There are not enough chairs in the shade.
Pool is nice but usually very crowded. Lots of families so quite noisy. And lots of people playing their own music so again very noisy.
The rooms are ok but could use a good scrubbing. Mattresses and pillows need to be replaced. Hallways are very noisy at times (usually evening) with children running and playing.
The staff in all departments was excellent. They work hard.
The grounds are well maintained and are attractive.
We spent 4 days at the Posada Real Dec 27th to Dec 31/05. I wish someone had told me how small the rooms were, they were exactly as pictured on their web site, but too small for 4 people and their luggage. We had to get a second room. The beds really are rock hard too! The hotel was clean, staff was friendly although not all spoke english. Most of the guests at this time of year were spanish. The restaurant was excellant and the staff very helpful. The location can't be beat, right on the beach, it's not crowded like the surrounding big hotels. All in all it is better than average accomodation. The hotel is within walking distance to restaurants and shopping. The best restaurant in town has to be Mama Norma's and Deborah's. Deborah is Canadian, she serves breakfast for $5.00 and dinner for a family of 4 for $50.00, delicious too!
Another plus is the hotel restaurant. We had the drinks included package. From 11am to 10:30pm they serve you all the drinks you want. No, don't worry, the place isn't crawling with rowdy, brawling drunks. In fact when we stayed there were a lot of families with kids, and there were no problems at all. The drinks package is a real plus if you have kids because they can have all the pop, juice, etc. that they want as well. The restaurant and wait staff were excellent and very affordable. The menu is mostly seafood, mexican, salads, burgers, etc...just about everything you can think of. The seafood was the best and most affordable that I've ever had, and again, I'm from the Northwest so I know great seafood. I would say the average dinner for two was less than $20, lunch and breakfast were more like $10, and again this is for two people. If you're a big eater they have a nice buffet for breakfast. Remember, all of your drinks are free, and that makes a big difference in the price of a meal. The waiters are all very friendly and helpful. No problem if you don't speak spanish. I do, but it wasn't necessary because they all spoke sufficient English.
Now some helpful tips to save you time and money. When you arrive at the airport bypass all of the helpful people that want to help you get a cab, etc. Usually they are trying to rope you into visiting a hotel, and will offer you some kind of gift in exchange. They'll tell you it's not a timeshare, and that they just want you to visit, and may offer you a free cab ride, a visit to Ixtapa Island, a meal , maybe some cash, whatever. Ignore them or say that you already have a ride, and proceed directly to the cab area and get a cab yourself. These activities don't cost much anyway, and unless you want to spend several hours getting a sales pitch for something very similar to a timeshare it's not worth your time. A cab to the hotel zone in Ixtapa is only about $20 - $25. Coming back to the airport I only paid $15.
You can book almost everything else through the hotel activities counter. For things like Ixtapa Island, Zip Line, and the Booze Cruise this is fine, but for other things it's much cheaper to just arrange them yourself. For example, if you want to visit Las Gatas beach, which I highly recommend, just go into Zihua (by bus), go to the pier and get a water taxi ticket ($3.50 roundtrip), and take the water taxi out. You can rent snorkeling gear and get tips on where to snorkel for free from the guys on the beach so don't bother booking a tour. Also, if you want to deep sea fish, I would strongly recommend going directly to the pier in Zihua the afternoon before and ask around for a good captain, and then talk to the captains personally to make sure that you like them and their price before you go. Unfortunately I made the mistake of booking my fishing trip through the hotel, and the captain that I got was a total dud (captain Jaime on the boat Arena). He barely said ten words to me on the whole trip, and I never got to touch a pole (and no, language was not a barrier as I speak spanish and english just fine, and so did he). So talk to the guys at the peir first so you don't make the same mistake that I did.
For shopping I would recommend Zihua over Ixtapa. They both have shops and crafts markets, but Zihua is much cheaper. Don't be intimidated by the town. Yes, it's a little run down looking, but it's perfectly safe. There is a large crafts market on the street that goes to the pier. A cab can take you directly there from Ixtapa for around $5, or you can take the bus for 70 cents. The buses are easy and convenient, just make sure that when you come back to the hotel you get on the ones that say "Ixtapa Marina," not just Ixtapa. Always negotiate with the guys at the market. They'll always lower their original price, but please don't take advantage of them. These people are poor, and if you can afford something for a reasonable price show some mercy and just pay it rather than negotiating them down to nothing.
Anyway, I highly recommend Ixtapa/Zihua and Posada Real for a nice, budget vacation. The beaches are the cleanest and best I've seen on the Pacific side of Mexico, and Ixtapa is smaller and more laid back than PV, Acapulco, and other west coast cities. Have fun!
The infinity pool is beautiful and the other pool was nearly empty all the time. There were always deck chairs or loungers available.
Our room was small, but very clean. We were a bit horrified with the louver bathroom door - it did not provide for much privacy or sound proofing... The bed was rock hard and a bit springy. It needed to be replaced. The air conditioner provided much needed comfort from the Ixtapa heat. The maid service was wonderful - Marie went out of her way to accomodate us and managed to get every speck of sand off the tile floor on a daily basis.
The hotel food was delicious! We stayed on the breakfast plan, so our daily breakfast buffet was included. We ate dinner at the hotel twice and lunch twice. We never had a bad meal.
Ixtapa was amazing. The best vacation we have taken outside of Canada. After Ixtapa, we will never visit the Caribbean again. The weather was perfect, the people were friendly, the city was relatively clean, the restaurants were wonderful and the prices were fair. The only annoyance were the soliciters on the beach and in the streets trying to sell you everything from braids, tattoos, silver, and hats to time-share condos ("almost free, senora"). But they relent quickly as soon as you say no thanks.
I suggest taking a walk to the Marnina to see how the rich live and to visit the crocodile that lives there. Don't get to close to him though!
Ixtapa is not for twenty-somethings looking for night-life. It is for couples/families looking for a quiet place to play in the hot sand, dine in wonderful restaurants and bargain in the market place.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Posada Real. The infinity pool was fabulous as mentioned several times here. The staff were prompt and although they understood English were pleased to provide impromptu Mexican-Spanish lessons...even after we had had a few of those lovely margaritas during happy hour! I don't know if we were exceptionally lucky but the other guests were as friendly as friendly could be without being invasive! Seriously even the Mexican families there on holidays always had a big Hola for us!
The previous comment about towels reserving places by the pool was correct but we didn't find that too annoying. If the tables close to the infinity pool were all reserved there were plenty of other spots to lounge about including another pool and the beach or some exploring of the area to do. We do the mini-putt one time...what a hoot! The putters are at the front desk all ya have to do is ask for them.
We only ate in the restaurant a couple of times other than the complimentary breakfast but we enjoyed the meal both times very much.
The music in the lounge was fun and I did dance up a bit of a storm in the lounge one night!
Oh there is a "fluff and fold" close by (near Senor Frog's) not deadly cheap but the laundry was done on time, well-laundered and so neatly folded that is was worth it for us.
My only "complaint" is the slight musty odor of our room.
The other comments we read here were fairly accurate except for the one comment about lack of accommodation/accessiblity for disabled persons and cranky front desk staff (same review). There was a very happy young boy in a lounger wheelchair who seemed to take advantage of all the hotel amenties even the pool. There were some others with canes who got around very well. I have MS although I didn't have my cane and I had zero difficulties. There is a ground level entry gate at the side so if you look at a photo of the hotel don't be put off by the stairs. I can't think of anywhere but the land side of the swim-up bar that has only only one staired access point and who cares about that when you can sit on a stool in the pool in the shade sipping a Pacifico or get drinks delivered directly to your table. I did need my hubby's arm getting in and out of the pool when people were sitting on the stairs by the railings but that is what I brought him for anyways! LOL j/k. BTW buses are plentiful and cabs are very cheap so getting around Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo was no problem either if you aren't up to strolling too much. I found the front desk staff very warm, welcoming and informative especially Pedro.
I have already recommended this hotel to friends looking for holiday spots.
I like the rooms find them fresh, well equipped and bright and they always look and smell clean which to me is a major plus!
On the disappointing side, we were kept waiting at check in while security went to check the room...twice.. not really sure why but would have thought that if a room were ready we should be able to go straight into it and bearing in mind we arrived at 9pm and check out is 12 noon then we would have expected to be able to go straight in, having said that the receptionist was very apologetic and really pleasant. In the room there was no a/c control and reception told us they couldn´t give us one as they didn´t have any, this meant a/c was really quite ineffective and didn´t cool the room as we would have liked. I did like the fact that they were obviously painting corridors and maintaining the hotel but couldn´t help but feel that they had lost the attention to detail that I had seen before, rusty and crooked taps and dirty showerheads, towels frayed and with holes in are small things but details that make the difference between something that is just OK and something better.
All in all like I say I think I would stay here again but perhaps next time will try somewhere different just to see what else is on offer.
