Nestled in a convenient and scenic location, Barceló Maya Tropical is celebrated for its cleanliness and diverse amenities, including a range of dining options and pools. However, some guests have noted that the rooms could benefit from updates and the additional costs for premium services can affect the perceived value. While the atmosphere is vibrant and the grounds are meticulously kept, the service quality appears to fluctuate, and the exuberance of the hotel's ambiance may occasionally be overwhelming for those with young children.

My husband and I returned from the Barcelo Tropical last night (2/29/2020). It is a great resort with beautiful beaches and pools. This was our 5th visit over the last 8 years. Each time we come we marvel at the expansion. Because we have visited 5 times, there was a bottle of champagne waiting in our room and our wristbands were upgraded to premium at no charge. We were offered premium liquors, restaurant meals every day, free WiFi, among other perks. The family friendly parks, pools and facilities have been greatly added to, attracting many young families. They also have added a huge adults only hotel if you prefer that. We like the tropical the best because the beach has better sand and it’s location is central to what we like to do. The food is plentiful and varied. We especially enjoy the staff who all wear great smiles and aim to please. Our favorite server, Carlos Ortiz greeted us with a smile every morning, paid attention to our need of fast delicious coffee and happily kept our cups full, bringing a to-go cup as we left. Our favorite bartender, Antonio Perdomo remembers I like a pre dinner glass of champagne and greets us with a friendly smile and attentive service.

Unfortunately the sky didn’t cooperate and it was cloudy, windy and cool much of the time, but the tropical pool aerobics and recreation team did a wonderful job keeping everyone busy and entertained. Laura from Columbia (I don’t know her last name) taught the best poolside dance classes. Our only complaint poolside was we miss the Mexican Music that they played in previous years and the music was mostly American pop and techno styles played extremely loud and we did have to move our chairs away from the action. Getting old, I guess. Also we’ve always visited in May or Sept and this February trip is the first time the weather wasn’t perfect. The resort is quite a bit more crowded this time of year as well, but the huge able staff handles the crowds well. All in all, we had a wonderful time and we will be back again.

We just returned from a 2 week stay at the Barcelo Maya Grand. We were given a room in the Beach resort, but the Grand package means that you can play at any of the 4 hotels that make up the majority of this resort. We had great service at all of the restaurants on this property, but had 2 noteworthy experiences at the Steak house located on the Tropical property. We ate at that restaurant on 3 different occasions and had the same server combination for 2 of those occasions and these two individuals really provided service above and beyond: Samuel Ruiz and his serving partner Hugo. We had many positive dining experiences at this resort, but these two individuals were absolute stand-outs on both occasions. Very professional, personable and efficient, anticipating our needs before we could even express them. We were very impressed! I was particularly impressed that Samuel had remembered serving us on our first visit, even though it was days before. Given the number of diners these individuals serve on any given day (and especially over the course of a year), this really impressed me. We just aren't that noteworthy! Thanks for a great experience, Samuel!

We were at Barcelo Maya Tropical for 11 days and whereas it was nice, I wouldn’t go back. Our room was fine and didn’t have a dampness problem like some other reviewers mentioned but the room key card would usually only work on the 4th-5th time.

The staff was for the most part very good, especially Mara Lopez in guest services, Bryan the Mayan (Zumba instructor), and the ladies at the Barci club (Mariana, Sara, and Tammy).

The beach was great, we had the best snorkeling experience with coral reefs, stingrays, turtles, eels, and even a swordfish. I’d strongly advise bringing water shoes because the rocks on the sea bottom will hurt you!

The buffet food was ok, it was largely lacking flavor (probably because it was targeted towards the mass audience) though I must say they did a great job on the Christmas Eve spread and setup, it was beautiful and had a larger variety than usual. The specialty restaurants were wonderful though. We dined at Marenostrum and Kyoto twice and once each at Capri, La Fuentes, Santa Fe, and Mexico Lindo. Reservations were a bit tricky with it being during the Christmas break but we found that even on the days that the only available dinner times were as late as 10pm, we were able to go in earlier and have our reservation moved up. We even managed to get a hibachi table whereas we were told none were available while initially making the reservation. The chefs at Kyoto were very friendly and entertaining. Mexico Lindo was our least favorite because it was grossly understaffed with only one older waiter working the handful of tables. It took forever for him to take our orders and bring our food out and he kept forgetting a lot of the things we asked for.

We didn’t spend much time in the pools but our kids loved the water park!

The entertainment crew was great. Our first night at the resort they had a full-blown Nutcracker ballet (a shortened version)! We also loved the Magic Show (which we saw twice) and the kids enjoyed the one with all the characters.

I felt like the resort was just too big for us. It was great to be able to walk a lot but the pool/beach area was a bit too crowded.

Dear Yelena M We first would like to thank you for choosing our Barceló Maya Tropical for your holidays in the Riviera Maya and for letting us know your concerns relating to your time in our hotel as it gives us an opportunity to look at areas which may have for improvement and for that we are grateful. On the other hand we thank you for pointing out the kindness and enthusiasm of our staff, their friendliness and helpfulness being our hotels’ main strength we will definitely congratulate them all on your behalf for their contribution to your wellbeing whilst staying among us. Moreover, we lament reading that our buffet offer did not live up to your expectations as our professional Chefs strive to surprise our guests with a high standard gastronomy and the possibility to savor the best of the local cuisine as well as the finest international delights, however as we receive guests of all nationalities and ages, we do not over spice the dishes in order to please all palates, nevertheless there is a wide spice station in our buffet for our guests to help themselves and season their dishes to their liking. Best regards, Barceló Maya Grand Resort.

This is our 3rd stay at Barcelo Maya and will probably be our last during peak season, we went during Christmas and the summer during the other two visits. With the opening of the adults only hotel with 700 new rooms booking restaurants and services is near impossible. On our previous Christmas vacation we didn't have this problem. Between 4 rooms we couldn't get a single a-la-carte reservation over 7 days for 11 people. Only after we offered to pay $20 per head were we able to get a reservation, felt like a total scam. I understand its high season over New Years but we paid high season rates to get a very poor experience. Unless you are going to the adults only portion who I strongly suspect get extra priority over everyone else I would never go again during high season, I would visit again at low season. It's a shame because the resort is very nice and family friendly.

We love this resort. People on reviews complain about checking in. We have never had a problem. Check-in time is 3pm and you don’t get your room key till 3, but there is a changing room off of the lobby (so pack your swimsuit in your small bag) and you get your wristband upon checking in. We arrived by 11:30 am and went to fitness class at noon, and a couple of cocktails and relaxed at the pool till 3. No problem for us.

People complain about weak drinks. Just ask for double or whatever number of shots in your drink and you’ll be served with a smile. We saw plenty of people over indulge so if that’s your jam, go for it.

The resort is very clean. We ate in the buffets most of the time during a pandemic. Our country requires a Covid test to return home. There are testing cites in another hotel on the property (next door Palace). You make your appointment at the customer service desk off the lobby. It was a little stressful not knowing what to expect but it was literally no big deal. We had our test 24 hours prior to departure and it cost $20 and just took a few minutes. We had our results instantly. We know of nobody who tested positive during our stay and spoke to many people.

I want to give a shout out to a few servers that were outstanding: Our meal at Marenostrum Seafood Restaurant was wonderful. Order the seafood crape! Our server Leonardo Hernandez was top notch. We enjoyed his service so much we were talking about him later that evening in the Bar Tequila. The bartender overheard us and introduced us to Leonardo’s Wife, Isabel Hernandez, who was a server there. Both Isabel and Bartender Josue Penaloza in the Bar Tequila catered to us with great service and humor each evening. I also want to mention Carlos Ortiz at the Mariachi Grill where we had lunch every day. He remembered us from previous visits and treated us like royalty.

We met plenty of other guests, from all over the USA, from Mexico, from Canada, from Portugal and from Russia and had so much fun with them. We look forward to another visit soon.

This has been the second trip to this resort, the first time was 20 years ago. The hotel has expanded greatly since then and now covers 2 bays. There's an adult only hotel at one end and the rest are family friendly. I highly recommend any of the hotels in this resort, although I didn't experience the adult only one but expect they would be just as great. The staff ALL work incredibly hard. At night you even have staff raking the beaches so they look perfect for customers first thing in the morning. There is plenty to do on site, our children enjoyed the entertainment team, quiz's at the pool, aerobics too were a real laugh. The beaches are clean with beautiful white sand, the sea is clear and good for snorkeling, although we recommend, you feed the fish at the end of the pier, there must be over a 100, and if you can get some fish food from a gift shop, they'll charge all around you. The food is amazing, they really took both COVID guidance and controls very seriously, and food hygiene was excellent too. I recommend you book into the restaurants with the tickets you are given, but go early to the service desks for booking as waiting and queuing takes forever when they are busy, so get up early and book. The best restaurant for entertainment too is the Japanese ones as they do a great show with knives, singing and a little food show, right at your table. Take clothes for dressing up as you need trousers and dresses etc for the booked restaurants. I also advice you buy the thermo mugs at the gift shop to reduce any risk of cross contamination with the plastic cups and ensure you have a nice chilled drink whenever you want. We enjoyed sailing on the Hobbie Cats, but get up early and que at 9am to book, they are more than happy to sail with you if you feel uneasy or not experienced. The only thing we weren't happy about was the dolphins. We don't believe anyone should have the in captivity, and certainly not to be used for peoples entertainment and to push people through the water with their noses, maybe one day the world will change and see that this is wrong, the swimming space for these creatures too are far too small. We did go to the spa during our stay and enjoyed the hydrotherapy treatment. So overall, the place is paradise! Staff all work incredibly hard, the food is amazing, the place to spotless and all looks recently decorated. Mainly Americans, Canadians and some Mexicans at the resort. I'd be very happy to return again, but its a small world so we'll see. Great value for money. Love the all inclusive. Thank you and well done Barcelo Team!

Was very underwhelmed despite many good comments of this resort. In a nut shell, felt like we were walking, walking, walking all day long. Our room was so far from the pool/beach. Did not like the feeling of having to tip for all of our service. The servers never made us feel this way but everywhere we looked, the guests were tipping therefore we always felt obligated. I have never stayed at an all inclusive where tipping is even allowed. There was music piped in everywhere...on the walkways, blasting from the pool...we couldn't escape it. We could even hear it from the beach which became particularity annoying if you didn't enjoy the genre of music. The food was good, excellent selection from the buffet at the Tropical hotel. The 3 restaurants we dined in were enjoyable. The staff always very friendly. Did not sleep well in the double beds. We are fit people and found this sleeping arrangement too small to sleep well in. Baffles me that it's not standard to have all beds queen size given the size of the average adult these days. The hotel and grounds were absolutely beautiful and my husband and I were constantly noticing how hard the employees worked at cleaning and maintaining the property.

We took an 8 day family trip and overall the experience at the Barcelo Maya Tropical/Colonial was amazing. Jose Pagan from the beach bar was incredible so friendly and always smiling. Margelly Hau from the beach Grill restaurant was absolutely lovely and very attentive. Our favorite restaurant was the Mediterranean and we enjoyed La Trattorio (thin crust pizza was awesome). Spa, gym, and Dolphinarius show was spectacular. The beach was unbelievable and we spent our entire vacation there. Crystal clear waters. Just a few negative things the door in each room is easily opened our 21 month old opened it all on her own. I suggest putting security locks with chain high enough so a child can't reach. The pillows were not very comfortable. Also, I think its pretty ridiculous to have ice cream machines at every buffet, but not letting anyone get ice cream till noon. The kids were begging for it and its just unnecessary. Also, the biggest issue we had was that the bars don't serve alcoholic beverages till noon. This is a new rule as usually all resorts start serving drinks at 10am.

This is our 3rd stay in 8 years which we used to love this resort. Our last stay was in March of 22' was very disappointed. This resort is starting to show its age. Out of the four families that came with us, 2 rooms had air conditioning units not working. We had a toilet that kept running. The tub drain needed to be fixed because you would stand in ankle high water while showering. Room cleanliness was not good. Floors only got swept never washed. The maid service was never on a schedule, they came from anywhere at 12pm to 5:30 pm. Ourselves and another family found clothing that did not belong to us laying in the room when we checked in.

Food was ok, you could always find something to fill the stomach. But the quality of the food was at a lower standard from our first two previous visit. The adult drinks were so watered down that majority of us switched over to beer. That was the other thing that was hard to understand, the resort served 3 kinds of beer, but each bar only had one choice not 3 to choose from. So, we had to find the better quality at the other bars.

Mask were required at 1/2 of the bars, why not sure on the reasoning??? Bar service was slow at ALL the pool bars.

We stayed at the Colonial section 5 years ago and found we spent most of our time at the tropical part so decided to book it this time. We booked for 12 days and had 3 other couples staying as well. We all booked under premium except one couple that booked much later than us and they could not get the same location as us as it was sold out. They had a superior room only and were told $650 usd to upgrade to premium but still in same room. They said no.
We had a junior suite ocean view that was in a great location as far as the beach and buffet. The ocean view was a stretch but our second floor balcony was the best.
We enjoyed our stay for the most part. When booking premium you are supposed to get better access to the specialty restaurants but we found in 12 whole days only one night was a reasonable time to reserve. Forget booking for 8 people. We found that premium didnt really mean much other than 10% off in shops and free one hour a day in the spas pool area with sauna, steam room and hit and cold pools. Unfortunately unless you pay for it you are left on your own with no idea as to what you should be doing. We only went once.
The premium booze was the same as those that didn't pay to upgrade. The premium lounge was sort of a joke and nobody ever told us anything about what we should have gotten or you could do. We have been premium guests at other 5 star resorts and this was not even close to the other resorts. Definately wouldn't pay for premium here unless you want the building close to the beach.
Food was pretty good for the most part, very little gluten free. Chocolate and vanilla muffins on day one and two, day three was just vanilla muffins and then day 10 there were big muffins with apple slices on top. That was it other than some bread. We only did one specialty restaurant - the steak place, didnt waste our time on any others
This resort is huge with having 5 altogether and allowed at 4. The mall area and shopping gave you something to do in the evenings. Not much for entertainment at night. We stopped at a couple but it was so loud you couldn't enjoy it. There is also a ton of walking, last time here you could get back and forth with golf carts but i guess with covid that had to end, however the double decker bus still made its rounds so that was good. We tried out the mini golf one morning- free during the day, we were given pretty beat up clubs that should have been thrown away. Was a very hot morning but we enjoyed being in under the trees. There is a new area with go carts and zip lines that a few tried and said they were ok. We also went across the highway to the Cenote Azul, it was still beautiful but so much busier now. We went for sun, beach, and spending time with friends so it was fine. Our weather was perfect and we all enjoyed ourselves. If you are wanting a premium experience check out the Ventus or the Hard Rock - much better

Yes that is correct, the people saying they made a reservation every night must’ve been staying at the palace or adults only.

Beside if you try to get peso for dollars then try to get unused peso converted back to dollars you will loose money . Like selling a car to a dealer then turning a week later and buying one . The dealer makes money both times, and you loose .
