This is an older dated property especially the rooms but they make up for it is so many other ways.
The food was very good cooks displaying proper hygiene practices.
They even have a falconer to keep the birds away I have never seen that before what a great idea entertaining as well, 2 birds with one stone.
Beer is Corona and they serve it in frosted glass mugs it tastes so much better that way, they only use hard plastic at the beach for obvious reasons. They have a good selection of the name brand liquors not the bottom shelf cheap stuff.
There is a mall within a 3 min walk down the street where they have a Starbucks with wifi unfortunately this resort does not have free wifi they should.
Bugs were not bad at all.
The beach was fantastic and goes on forever.
Overall this is a smaller clean, well kept and managed resort. The staff are very friendly, hard working and attentive especially Karyna who was very helpful although I do not believe she is there anymore.

We have stayed at a number of Barcelo properities and this was our second stay at the Occidental. As before we were impressed with the hardworking, friendly and helpful staff. Special mention - Darcy, David and Melanie from the buffet, Gabriel, the concierge plus the wait staff in the Italian restaurant and the beach waiter.

Since our last visit there have been changes for the better - the rooms were updated and the Mexican buffet expanded and moved to a new location and a Japanese restaurant option added. However wifi is still at a cost, the adult only pool is now limited to Royal level guests and smoking is still permitted in the common areas.
Currently there is construction of a new wing going on the south side of the hotel 7 days per week from 8am until 9pm. Our room was located on that side. The jack hammering and other construction noise was extremely loud and made it impossible to be in our room during the day. it is very disappointing that no mention is made of the construction on the hotel's website or any other booking sites nor is any discount given.

This is not an exclusive high end hotel with exquisite food and highly personalized attention to detail. But it is a very comfortable hotel that does most things right. First, some good things about the hotel: it is in a good location, walking distance to the pier, restaurants, grocery store and airport. The hotel also has a very nice beach with palm trees for shade.
Unfortunately, the hotel is also very loud. The lobby is all tile open about 7 stories and a lot rooms face this open lobby. All the noise from the lobby and the bar in the lobby travel up to the rooms. It is very loud. The rooms also don't have balconies, which makes drying cloths difficult.
The food was also ok. None of the bars have snacks, so if you get hungry you have to get dressed and walk to a restaurant. We were in the royal level, so we had a special pool and beach. Both of these were nice. However, no one comes to your chairs to sere you drinks. I also felt that most of the staff were begging from tips. The pool bartender was very obvious about wanting tips. In addition, I stubbed my toe pretty bad on the beach and required a little first aid. The life guard came to help and even he was subtly asking for a tip!!!!
All in all, the rooms were nice and the restaurants were ok, but I would not recommend it or stay there again.

Everything was very good except there was no disco or dancing in the evenings. The most useful invention is the chip with the wrist band to open the room, to get the towels, etc. You don't need "to forget or misplace " your room key!!!
A welcome thing is: no food outside the restaurants, no straws for drinks, that equals to cleanliness, also a pray bird to scare away unwanted animals and birds from the eating area.

From the first interaction with the Bell Boy we knew the staff was going to be great at this resort. That being said, we encountered a problem upon checking in, where our room was basically shaking from the construction, and we were told to go back the next morning to change rooms. We went back the next morning at 9 AM as requested, and it wasn't ready, so we went on with our day. Later when we came back they said they had given our new room away as we weren't there? Anyways we got it sorted after two noisy mornings waking up to construction. Our new room was far away, and we had a peaceful rest of our week.
Other than the bad first two mornings, we had an amazing stay thanks to the hospitable and friendly staff, and great food at all restaurants. We're a couple in our mid 20s, and would say that the average age is around 55, but that's to be expected at a resort priced above the average. We met a few people our age that we hung out with, played beach volleyball, and participated in all the poolside competitions.
Tokyo, Los Olivos, and the Mexican restaurant were all amazing experiences, and the buffet was very good too. The only time we could book the Habachi part of the Tokyo restaurant was 10 pm, as Royal Level guests get first dibs. We did this one our final night, and actually preferred the regular version of Tokyo. Taco Bar at Lunchtime is awesome, and the omelette bar at breakfast is the perfect way to start your day.
All of the bartenders and poolside servers were exceptional, with a special shoutout to Erik, Ulises, Irun, Oscar, Julio, Rene, and Mara! We need to shoutout the entertainment team who keep the energy going all day: José, Adrian, and Araceli made every day more fun and lively. Also, Gabriel the concierge gave us an incredible recommendation for a taco restaurant "Taco Contento" which was a 10 minute taxi away.
The resort is quite small, with one pool, beachside beds, and the only hot tub reserved for royal level guests, but this area is the one nearest the construction, so we spent most days by the main pool or far side of the beach. We used the tennis court (one rental racket is broken, the other was good), and the bicycles which were in good condition. We went 25 minutes north to Bucerias where the majority of it is on a bike path, but the last 10 minutes are on difficult cobblestone roads.
Overall we would give this place a glowing recommendation based on the friendliness of the staff, and the quality of the food. The rooms and common areas are very nice, and of course the sun was shining all seven days during our trip.

We upgraded to the Royal package so had a beautiful room on the 6th floor with a balcony (warning- balcony doors automatically lock behind you if you go out on the deck!). Everything was clean and well stocked. Beds were comfortable and AC was good. Food was decent. If you book at Japanese I would recommend getting a hibachi booking where the chef cooks in front of you. We weren’t told there was a difference so ended up with just sushi at a corner table. The resort is dealing well with Covid as far as masking, taking temps, sanitizer etc. The beach is beautiful and staff are mostly friendly. Good service around the pool. Warning though - I had a phone taken from my safe. I had to waste a morning filing a report and having 3 people come up and search my room and go through every single belonging of ours, just to have them tell me they certified that NO ONE had been in our room. Which is wrong as it had be CLEANED.

If you don't want your vacation turn into a horror movie, do not stay at this hotel. Hotel staff is extremely rude! The ocean looks brownish color with black stuff swimming in it, it looks nothing like in the pictures. I am fully vaccinated but I got tested positive for COVID before my flight and hotel staff treated me super rude during my stay. They did not pick my phone calls including their emergency line I suppose to call if I have a medical emergency. They don't have a clear procedure for COVID-positive guests. They kept asking me when I am going to check out. They also told me people get tested positive all day every day all the time, so I should not be worried! After my quarantine, my test result came back negative, they questioned why I am outside of my room and told me to go back to my room. They disabled my room key when I left the room knowing that I still have another day to stay until my flight. Hotel does not clean the room while you are quarantining. Since they never pick up the phone, it is difficult to request clean items daily, they provide me the items once at the beginning of my quarantine and that was it. They questioned why I was using room service by hotel staff when I was not allowed to leave my room to get food. They also cut off my wi-fi internet in the room that I was paying for, so I had to spend hours to call them to get my internet re-open. I would never stay here again. I could give them a zero star or negative if I could.

Overall we had a wonderful experience. We have a 19 month old who was on her first trip to Mexico. I was very pleasantly surprised by the pools. So many 6" and 18" deep areas for her to swim, play and jump without us worrying. The staff is fantastic and quickly moved us rooms when we were initially placed in a room over the lobby. We knew this would be very loud a night and with a baby did not sound like a good idea. The royal level is a must! The extra amenities, better service, better meals are worth it. Learning lesson - we should have called before we got there to make dinner reservations. The hibachi was fully the entire time we stayed. The sushi was great though and they will customize the rolls if you ask. Every roll has cream cheese so we asked for them to be made without. The resort is relatively small so it is easy to get from your room, to meals to pool/beach.
Cons:
The construction. It goes on past 5pm and was going on Sunday. It is directly over the royal level pool so we just gave up on using that. The staff needs to play music earlier than noon to drown out the noise.
Food. It is bland and basic in almost every restaurant. I understand they are catering to midwestern and Canadian tastes, but wish there was some spice or some more local cuisine. Disclaimer my husband is a chef and we really do like good food. Not the worst all-inclusive food I have ever had, but not the best.

My wife and I booked Occidental based on several positive reviews of this all inclusive resort.
For the most part the experience was pretty good. We got mostly consistent service in a few areas, the resort was well kept/maintained, and staff were friendly and ready to please.
We appreciated the intimate setting (the resort is on the smaller side, but this was appreciated), and the food was quite good (compared to several other resorts we have been to).
However, there were a few negatives:
1) Construction of a new wing. We were not informed by the resort (vs. other guests) that construction was going to occur in close proximity of the Royal Club area. As such, we and other guests were subjected to constant hammering, jackhammering and sawing noises that disrupted the peacefulness we were looking for. Some guests we talked to were informed via an email, however, we were not.
2) Level of service was not consistent in all areas. Service was quite good at front reception, concierge, pool bars and cabanas. However, the service at the restaurants left something to be desired. It seemed as though there were not enough trained staff to serve guests in food areas.
3) The Royal Club. We paid extra to receive the perks of this supposedly top notch service. However, on my father in laws birthday, we did not get served our appetizers until approximately 30-45 minutes after we sat down for our dinner reservation at 7:00PM. Entrees were served at 9:00PM, 2 hours later! We have 2 small children, and one was falling asleep before our main dishes were served. My wife had to leave to put her to bed. And when our entrees were served, 3 of the 4 were lukewarm to cold. To be fair, the front of house were excellent and profusely apologized to us and tried to make it up to us. I suspected (formerly being in the catering business) that the back of house (kitchen) had major issues with the cooking and timing of food. Given this we all just left hungry (lost our appetites) and went to the buffet for dessert.
I did mention our displeasure to the Operations Manager (Eliana) and she was very apologetic and accommodating. She constantly apologized and we ended up negotiating some compensation that met our needs and which was to our satisfaction.
Negative aspects aside, we did appreciate several staff who went out of their way to serve us. A big thanks to Daisy at Spa Wellness for a great hot stone massage. And an even bigger thanks to Luis Robles, Maria and Agustin at the Royal Club Pool Bar/Cabanas who were spot on in serving us our drinks in a timely manner. They were super friendly and always had a smile on their faces.
Overall, we would still come back to Occidental given that the positives did outweigh the negatives. Hopefully management will read this review and endeavour to make some changes to improve their service level in all facets of the resort.
