Detailed Reviews

Spent the last 2 nights of our trip at this hotel. Good location in walking distance to downtown Banff. Clean rooms. Overall, nice staff. My only complaint is we came by the hotel in the morning to see if we could arrange for an early check in as we were coming back from camping and was hoping to relax a bit. The front desk said he would prioritize getting our room ready early and would call us when we could come check in. We never heard from him and just ended up coming back at normal check in time at 4 pm. They did allow us to park our car in the garage prior to checking in, which we greatly appreciated.

We were met at reception by a trainee, and then had to wait for the 'expert' member of staff. But it didn't feel like much of a welcome; minimal info was given, we weren't even pointed in the direction of the lifts, there was definite ambivalence.
The entire hotel had the feel of a 1980s care home. It absolutely needs updating. There's a large room to the right of reception that has a few armchairs in, not enough to fill the room, maybe it's the 'entertainments room' - but nothing entertaining there for sure! The bar was always more or less empty, and the lady hosting the restaurant also had to nip to the bar to serve drinks.
The bedroom decor is depressingly dated. But if dark and old fashioned, 1980s furniture, plus an archaic shower doesn't bother you, then you should have great night's sleep - because the beds and bed linen are extremely comfy.
The room wasn't cleaned until late afternoon, making it awkward to return earlier than around 4pm. After check in, we barely saw any staff; housekeeping, the bar/restaurant lady, and the lady on reception (who never acknowledged us as we walked by), that was all.
Location is okay, but still around 15 mins walk to the centre of Banff. The car park is useful, but expensive.
The menu was limited and the restaurant had barely any customers whenever we looked. We would've preferred to eat there but there was nothing to entice us.

We really enjoyed our 5 night stay at the Royal Canadian Lodge. It's true that this hotel isn't the most modern, but neither is it old (it opened in 2000, per our guidebook), and our premier queen room seemed nicely remodeled. The room was clean, with high ceilings and large windows. The bathroom was spacious and had two sinks with a sliding door in the middle, allowing two people to get ready simultaneously, which was convenient. There's a cozy saltwater pool and hot tub in the basement, which our kids enjoyed. The secure underground parking is convenient and costs a reasonable $20 CAD daily. Downtown Banff is an easy 10 minute walk away. Finally, and most importantly, we got a great rate - while all accommodation in the Canadian Rockies is really expensive in August, it was a pleasant surprise that this hotel was among the cheapest options not just in Banff but also compared to places in Canmore. Would definitely stay here again.

This review is coming, not from a disgruntled customer, however from someone who has high expectations of a four-star hotel. We stayed at the Royal Canadian Lodge in August 2024 based on recommendations of family. The hotel was very nice. Front desk staff were extremely welcoming. They were particularly helpful when we had to extend our stay due to the wildfires in Jasper. The one major issue occurred when Housekeeping failed to clean the room appropriately. Almost daily, the room service included fresh towels, and making the bed, but nothing else. They did not vacuum nor did they clean the bathroom. There was areas of dried dirt on the floor from our hiking shoes that was never cleaned nor vacuumed and dirty coffee cups were left unattended. The epitome was when my wife and I came back from a long day of hiking, looking forward to a shower, at 6 PM the room was never cleaned. This was escalated to the operations manager, Joseph McKinnon, who, after personally getting us some towels, only offered a drink at the bar as service recovery. After this, he openly avoided us. A bit surprising coming from an operations manager.
A big shout out to the front desk staff who stepped up and offered a much better service recovery option and were very pleasant and professional about it.
Having your room cleaned properly when you stay at a hotel is one of the tenets of that stay. This is whether you’re staying at a local motel or a five star property. The failure of this property to properly clean the room put a stain on what was otherwise an excellent experience.

We recently stayed here for 2 nights after having to extend our stay in Banff due to our Jasper accommodation being cancelled due to the bushfires. I would say from first impressions entering the hotel, I thought it was going to be a great stay as all looked good but for over $500 per night, we would have expected a bit more - room was very small with not the most comfortable bed and lumpy pillows although on upside shower was great. Our room was not serviced at all, which wasn't a critical thing for us except for the price per night we thought it should have been part of the service. The couple we were travelling with had flat batteries in the TV remote and blown globe in bedside lamp and also their room wasn't serviced either. We went to inform front desk about this and they said that they would waive the $20 per day extra payable for parking and that was all they could do so a disappointing experience overall considering that this hotel was nearly double the price per night of anywhere else we stayed whilst travelling around the Rockies as well as being by far the smallest rooms we had.

The grand entrance makes for beautiful start to your romantic getaway! The rooms have a very cozy royal vibe with an extremely comfortable bed. You don’t have to leave to find the perfect place for a date, the Evergreen lounge overlooks outside and has a very polished look making it inviting, easy to start up conversation and the service at dinner is exceptional. The staff are knowledgeable and kind. Banff was beautiful but the best part of our day was retreating to the steam room & mineral pool to unwind before bed.

I've stayed at the Royal Canadian Lodge many times over the best decade. In recent visits I thought its standards had slipped since it ceased to be a Delta branded hotel. However, I thoroughly enjoyed my most recent stay and can say that its level of service and comfort have improved since my previous visit.
The amenities in the room are very good. Rooms come with a small fridge, a single serving coffee machine, bath robes and even slippers! Toiletries are good quality, with toothpaste and mouthwash included. Very nice soaps.
Though I still miss the free coffee and cookies in the lobby.
Having stayed in a lot of the hotels on Banff Avenue this is my favorite and I will return.

This is an extremely disappointing hotel, they make up the rooms only every three days apparently, so one has to go down and get towels and soap etc. as necessary. We tried breakfast and were told there was a 15 minute wait. That was optimistic it was more like 40 so outside eating is recommended.

We checked in and the receptionist didn't even welcome us; very poor customer service, we felt like an inconvenience to them. I asked several times for things like advice on activities etc. and they are totally not interested in helping guests with anything. Due to the covid restrictions, the pool has to be booked in advance, and they will not give you ANY advice on when to call etc. I called at 7:30 AM to book, and everything was already taken. When I asked when to call to actually get a spot, the receptionist was annoyed and said: it's all in your confirmation email, you should read it.
Room service is only available till 9 PM. There is no water that you can purchase or order, so if you don't have change on you to get it from the vending machine, you can't get water. No attention from cleaning staff either, not even offering to do any housekeeping, you have to call for someone to bring towels and empty the garbage. Our view is on a dumpy backyard overflowing with empty cans and bottles! No joke.
This is definitely NOT a 4-star hotel.
PS the one good thing, and reason for 2 and not 1 star is that the beds are super comfy,

Dear NorthStar, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your recent stay with us. We are disappointed to know that you did not enjoy your stay. The pool booking is a difficult situation to navigate based on the demand and the limited amount of spots available, we definitely try our best to accommodate all of our guests. We recognize that you were only able to use the pool twice during your stay and we apologize this was not to your satisfaction. In this current environment it is very important that we manage our guests expectations since so many services have changed, your comments have brought this to the forefront and will be discussed among the management team. Once again, thank you for your feedback. Sincerely,

We did have a reasonably good time in this hotel which is in walking distance from the town centre. It offers well appointed and reasonably equipped rooms which are are quiet and clean. The problem we had was with the staff who obviously lacked experience (probably due to the recent pandemic) who offered little or no information when approached though they were very friendly. The Concierge was never seen again after having promised to fore=ward some local information to us and the staff in the Restaurant unfortunately had some trouble to explain parts of the menu. To our surprise they even suggested that we have to pay corkage in order to take our half drunken bottle of wine that we purchased with the dinner and decided to finish in our room.
The bar here is rather small, but t=well stocked and the bar steward was a delight when compared to his colleagues. Still, we did not dislike the hotel and there is no reason for not recommending it to other visitors to this wonderful town
