When we arrived, we had requested early check in (2 pm). They were full the night before and the room wasn't available, which is totally understandable. When we did get into our room, the thermostat read 85 degrees. We asked for some help cooling it off, and they sent somebody immediately. The maintenance person was not available, so they offered us a new room.
Our second room was a little cooler but even with the cool air on full blast, it never got below 76 degrees. Which was way too warm for sleeping.
The room was spacious. It was nice to have a separate space for sleeping, and one for sitting/socializing. The tub was very decent for a standard hotel room, and since the pool was closed, it was nice to have a hot bath at the end of the night. However, we did not like the layout of the bathroom. The sink was outside the bathroom, which makes it a bit awkward.
The linens looked to be clean and fresh, but some of the amenities looks to have been used? Our little bottle of lotion was almost completely empty. There was also some staining (drips) on the walls, and inside the drawers.
A free breakfast in the morning is always a plus. The coffee was decent. The waffles and sausages were good. There was a good selection and the man who was cleaning and keeping things stocked was very helpful to me as well as other guests in the breakfast area.
Overall it was an ok looking room, but the lack of amenities and the heat made it a poor stay. I don't think it was worth the price we paid considering the pool was closed.
Saturday we got a new room and then at 3 pm 2 guys with working keys entered our room saying this was the room that the front desk gave them. I phoned the front desk, with my cell phone and they were mortified promising this wouldn't happen again. We found out that our keys were disabled and needed re-keying. Second night none of us slept well. When I asked to speak to a manager, there was no manager until Monday and I was given the hotel general email and told this was the manager's email. I emailed the manager my issues with this place. The woman at checkout knew of our troubles and told us she wouldn't charge us and would be fighting for us to not be charged. I received an email from the manager upon returning home telling us that because we stayed at the hotel (hoping that all of these situations would be corrected) she was still charging us for this HORRENDUS stay. On top of that she's apparently fired her staff because of what happened to us.
We were initially given a room that smelled like we just walked into Bed and Bath after somebody dumped a whole bottle of their bottle spray on the carpet. The scent was overwhelming. I opened the window and turned on the bathroom fan to try and get rid of the smell. I wasn't sure about calling the front desk as I figured the smell will hopefully disappear and Nicole had already been so helpful in getting our reservation corrected.
Nicole, fortuitously called to check on how our room was and I told her the problem. She immediately came upstairs with a set of new room keys and moved us, apologizing for the overpowering smell.
Our new room thankfully was odour free. Our beds were comfortable, the room clean.
The location is closed to the University which is exactly where we needed to be. II highly recommend staying here. The hotel is across from Calgary's light rapid rail station so if you want to use transit to get around it's super easy. Parking is no charge for guests.
The room was comfortable and the air conditioning worked very well. My second quibble is the lighting in the room: it was terrible for reading. Light over the bed rather than to the side would be good. If you do a reno, please think about that.
We enjoyed our stay in spite of my minor issues, and likely will be back.
