Traveling from Australia we needed a room for the Stampede. First approach is was Opps but the room was adequate, clean and roomy. Stiuated in walking distance to the Stampede grounds. Excellent. The food was very good and staff were helpful. A tea tottler in a pub environment. The pub is very dark but you get used to it. I did worry about the noise. It was minimal for the gigs they had on. Hardly heard it. Great value. On the fringe of the industrial area you do hear the traffic occasionally. This is the local watering hole. We willbe back.

When I first come to the entrance I was like Damn. But the staff were nice and tried to accommodate my requests. When I got into the room. I was decently satisfied. For $75 a night. This is really decent. The room is not too big nor small. I like it. This is a budget friendly motel. If u travel in budget and have a car, come to this one. It's really not too bad. Anywhere better u will have to pay $30 more at least

The staff try hard, but the fact is, it's a noisy, dirty bar. Try to get a room at the location across the street, as it's at least quiet, but I stayed there 4 days, and the room wasn't cleaned even once while I was out. Plus a lengthy check-out process, as the desk clerk had to run to my room to make sure I hadn't trashed the room while I stayed there. Very under-staffed, and not terribly expensive, but spend the extra money and go someplace else.

The Shamrock Hotel has operated in Calgary for decades. I have not visited the place for many years but I heard of an awesome blues jam on Saturday afternoon. This is a boutique hotel with a few rooms. The area is older with both large houses and small "railroad" houses and with industrial businesses. It is an "out-of-the-way" place. Entering in the front, it was very clean with really nice staff. They had a restaurant fire a few years ago and rebuilt their kitchen. The food was very good and very reasonable priced. The blues jam started at 4PM and it was very entertaining with a myriad of musicians. About 9PM the Blues Brothers came on. WOW! They had a 10 piece band with three horns playing. Before "Jake and Elwood" came on, they had this awesome singer - not just a singer but a professional performer from Calgary. A bit later, Jake and Elwood came on. True to their name, The Blues Brothers put on a fantastic show. Cover charge was $20.00 and it was well worth it. I'd recommend as a go to place for blues music or just for lunch. As I said, you can't go wrong with the menu - cheap, good food with an assortment of Canadian and Chinese meals. But definitely, check out the music too.

Oh my God! if you are planning to stay in this hotel, please change your plan right away! This is most disgusting hotel I ever saw. We had to forgo one night's money as we checked in and found out what we found out. The area is smoky, carpets are dirty and old, washroom disgusting. The people you see are very shady and suspiciously looking. The hotel attendant was not helpful at all and could not accommodate our demands. The hotel location is industrial and noisy. There is a train nearby and could disrupt your sleep. Never be deceived by the pictures of the beds. They are not as they look. So small. For 10 or 20 bucks you can get a nice hotel like Ramada.

We saw mixed reviews for this hotel and were a little reluctant to book. However with most of the downtown area booked up, we took a chance. Luckily we were in the building across the street fro the bar. Our room was clean, quiet and comfortable. Although the décor is dated, it was roomy and fit our needs. Dave, the owner, was very nice and we chatted with him at length in the parking lot. Our only disappointment was booking through Travelocity, which I won't get into here.

So, so, so bad. I have stayed in some dive hotels as I like a good deal but this was by far the worst. The lady who checked us in was rude, and charged us more for the night than we had booked at. We stayed in the building across from the main building/bar/office, although others have said their accommodation was nice... ours was not. You are greeted by a disgusting smell of stale smoke when you enter the building. Even as a smoker, I still say it was disgusting. Posters on the walls that say "no smoking, you are being video taped for security" which is clearly not true due to the putrid stench. Bought some frito's in the candy machine, only to discover the expiry date was about 6 months prior to my eating half the bag. Got to our room and it was disgusting. Garbage on the floor in the bathroom, a double bed and a single bed, crappy furniture that looked as though was bought at a garage sale, bars across the window were actually a bonus as felt safe in a sketchy neighbourhood. Not worth the $100 they will tell you it is worth, but actually charge you $150....

We selected the Shamrock since it wasn't far from the Calgary Stampede and thought we could walk to the event. No way. As we drove up, we could see that the area was a dilapidated industrial area with lots of boarded up businesses. There was a woman with tattoos, smoking heavily and pacing back and from in front of the place. My wife didn't want to get out of the car, but since I had guaranteed the room, there was no turning back. It turns out that the Shamrock isn't a conventional motel; it is a combination bar/nightclub/motel. There is a marquee above the door announcing the bands playing until 2:50 AM. I walked in the door to find a tiny room, maybe 8 x 10 with one door leading to the bar/nightclub another door probably leading to some motel rooms and over by the side there was a window similar to a ticket window at a movie theater. There was no one there. A few minutes later, a great big heavy set guy came in and asked me what I wanted. I explained that I had a room reservation. He was friendly and we chatted a bit until the room clerk came back. I asked him if he worked there and what he did. He said "I watch the bar." He was the bouncer. Meanwhile my wife was huddled down in the car with the doors locked and saw what she thought was a prostitute (based on dress) hanging around the the front of the place looking for guys. It looked like there were two sets of rooms. One set adjacent to the bar which is probably for people in the bar who meet and want a room for a short period and another set across the street for overnight guests. I didn't confirm this, it just looked like this. Our room was across the street. The inner hall was protected by a key code. Each room had a no smoking sign on the door that looked new. The hall reeked of smoke and when we opened the door to our room it was even worse. I'm guessing that they put up the no smoking signs that day or at most a few days before. We tried to air out the room with some success but the window had no screen and was facing the parking lot so it didn't seem wise to leave it open. The sink had lots of stains where cigarettes were allowed to burn into the counter. The room was clean but in poor repair with missing tiles and some tacky repairs such as the shower curtain rod was wrapped in electrical tape to cover the rust. The room was completely devoid of any decorations, no pictures etc. There was a tiny TV, maybe a 15" screen but it wouldn't work. It was a bit cool so we turned on the heat - it didn't work either. We went to bed and fell asleep. About 3 AM all hell broke lose with people yelling, and walking fast or running, cars starting etc. My wife was terrified. The room door was steel and seemed secure and no one bothered us. We figured that the bar had just closed. As "pleasant" as this stay was, we have decided to never return.

There are good point to this hotel. The beds are good and the doors lock. The location was good in the respect it was only a short walk to the stampede and near to bus stops. The free wifi worked well, even if you had to keep signing in. Having a washing machine and dryer on our floor was a huge help though. The bad list is a little worse. It is right next to a chicken processing plant, which stunk our room out during the afternoon. The room we had was right above the smoking area outside so we couldn't leave the window open im the evening. The lack of air conditioning was a killer. The towels where either too small, threadbare or a mix of the two. I understand a bar will be loud but I found it a little over the top. When I went down to complain the staff member couldn't tell me what time it was going to stop. The phone in our room was broken and the staff member seemed annoyed at us when we didn't answer the phone that wasn't ringing. The blinds did an ok job of keeping light out but curtains would be better. My suggestion is if you are looking for a one night stop over or are looking to spend your time in the bar then this place is for you. If you are wanting a relaxing holiday with family I suggest finding somewhere else.

Probably one of the worst Hotels I stayed at (for the value of money) It was like a hostel that was over priced. 1. They had no extra towels (our shower leaked so we cleaned up the floor with one of the towels they provided and would not give us extra - they couldn't even cause they had no extra towels on hand! 2. Breakfast doesn't start till 1030? Yup which doesn't make sense for a hotel. Most places start at least by 7. (Funny enough on Sunday as we were checking out, there were people in the bar getting CUT OFF (so drunk they were not allowed to drink anymore) at 10am and breakfast didn't start till 1030.... ummm? something is not right. 3. Coffee pot was dirty in room and asked if I could have a clean one. Like the towels, didn't have any extras, so I asked if they could wash it for me. So the guy went to the bar and splashed some water on the outside of the coffee pot and was like "good enough?" sigh 4. Hotel is attached to a bar and bad crowed. Cab driver even said to me NEVER TO STAY THERE AGAIN. Bad things happen. Other notes. Most staff were very nice (not helpful though), the hotel is very poorly ran, hotel over all clean, next to train - so loud! If this was a hostel in a shady a area for a quarter of the price I might understand why it is the way it is. but for an extra 20 dollars a night you could stay somewhere so much better. DON'T STAY HERE.
