I thought I should write an updated review of this location. We checked into the jacuzzi suite Mar 15 - 17. Hotel staff are freindly, helpful and just awesome. The hotel is very clean and well kept. We checked into the room, and were immediatly shocked at the space, the bathroom was 18x8. I've stayed at New York hotels that were smaller than this bathroom. Very clean room, and spotless. Two large tvs, Kuerig machine, actual glassware, plates and stoneware coffee mugs (my biggest bug in hotels is paper cups only, they have both here). Plenty of towels. I have no complaints about this location and will definately stay here from now on when we come to Edmonton again.

My wife had an early appointment in Edmonton, so we looked for a room close to her appointment. We decided on this hotel since it used to be my go-to in west Edmonton.

The rooms are comfortable and the hotel is quiet. The attached Ricky's Restaurant makes it easy for breakfast.

The hotel is in need of a makeover as our room was looking a little tired. There were scuff marks on the wall, the sink in the bathroom did not drain fast, and the toilet was loose. The cleaning staff did not do a great job as they missed a stain on the nightstand (see picture).

The check-in was fast and friendly. The hotel also has a pool which would be good for families.

While the room was dated, the overall stay was good.

The hotel staff accidentally gave our room to another person, so when we arrived they spent 20 minutes trying to sort it out. The hotel staff DID NOT say a word to me. They had ample time to say something like “I’m sorry. There has been a booking error and we are going to sort it out. It was on our end, but we will resolve it.” INSTEAD, I had to stand at the counter and overhear all of that. One of the staff members also licked her fingers while pulling out our room keys. In addition to the check-in fiasco, breakfast sucked. Their main pool was freezing and the hot tub was so small.

Breakfast: They are attached to restaurant so this isn’t the normal Holiday Inn Breakfast experience. They only give you a few basic options and everything else you have to pay for.

On our first morning, our server took our order down incorrectly. I was the only order that came incorrectly so I kindly advised her it was wrong. She started arguing with me, to which my husband and daughter both said “That is not what she ordered. You got it wrong.” She unhappily return it and never made contact with us again. Unfortunately, the server was there the next morning and again wasn’t that friendly.

I honestly felt that it was a complete waste of our money. I would not stay here again, and if I knew a friend was, I would highly advise them to stay somewhere else!

Very quiet location. Staff were very good and helpful. Room was extremely clean and the beds were so comfortable we slept in. No breakfast due to COVID but Ricky’s is attached next door complete with a lounge.
Highly recommend again and close enough to West Edmonton Mall.

This was my first stay in this property and I was very impressed!

The check in process was very quick and painless. Francis, the gent that checked me in was very efficient and was kind enough to point me to all the amenities and facilities that the property has to offer.

Was upgraded to a suite due to my loyalty status and that was very much appreciated.
Welcome amenity points was credited to my account right away.

The property is along a busy boulevard and a few minutes from West Edmonton Mall but there are plenty of restaurants selections nearby. My suite was very quiet even though it was facing the busy boulevard.

The suite was quite spacious and well appointed with the typical Holiday Inn furniture and fixtures. It had a fairly spacious living area and a small bar area with a microwave and a small fridge. Bathroom was small but it's got everything I needed. The bedroom was small but had a very comfortable bed that made for a very restful sleep.

The facility has a small pool, a small business centre and a Ricky's Grill restaurant in house.

Would recommend this property to guests with family or guests that are looking for a small and quiet place to stay weather for business or pleasure.

After Driving for 3 hours with 3 children we were looking forward to unwinding. We went to the front desk and provided our reservation code and name. The gentleman at the front desk said we did not have a reservation under our Name. We asked him to check our reservation code and he said that we were not registered there but we might be at another Holiday Inn which he provided us the address. We loaded our luggage and kids back into the car and drove 20 minutes to get to the other Holiday Inn and Suites. We go to the front desk and two very nice ladies greeted us and we gave them our name and reservation number. They looked it up and told us that the reservation was at the Holiday Inn we just came from. They said they had taken our name down wrong. We asked “ why did our reservation number not work there and he sent us here”. They apologized and said that he should of know that and by checking the reservation code. Now we had to go back to where we just came from.

We reload the car, drove another 20 minutes back with the kids and walk back into the hotel and the Front Desk manager tells us it was our fault for not providing the correct name we were dump founded. We replied it was your hotel that took our name down and provided the reservation code. We also asked him why he could not find our reservation code and the other ladies found it right away and knew what hotel we were staying at!. He just told that our name was wrong and it was not his issue. We asked to talk to the Manager and he said he was the manager. Then we asked to talk to his Manager and he said she was not working today but gave us her card. When he gave us her card he said "let me spell my name "ANIKET LINAYE" so you get it right when you call". - WOW we were blown away. We thought he was quitting and was getting back at the hotel. We call the Manager, Violet Anderson. When talking to Violet she and we told her the situation she apologized but really had no concern in her voice. She said that she would talk to "ANIKET LINAYE" but he was the acting manager and was doing well. He was not quitting but was staying. It was the most shocking display of customer service I have ever encountered. I work in the hospitality industry and own a restaurant. If the management have no customer service skills and Holiday Inn and Suites do not do something about this, I will never stay at a Holiday Inn ever and recommend others do not as well.

Just a side note, the Holiday Inn was empty with no one around both times we were there. We ended up staying at the Courtyard Marriott which was fantastic and very busy. The front desk manager "Sagar Akbari" was amazing and very helpful. All the staff was great. It shows empty vs full and customer service. PLEASE BE AWARE!

Response from HIEdmonton, Front Office Manager at Holiday Inn & Suites West Edmonton, an IHG Hotel

Hello Michael I apologize if my attitude came across the wrong way when you were at the hotel. I do my job with passion and will certainly keep in mind the experience you had on that day and learn from it. I am not typically the rude and obnoxious guy that is portrayed in the review. It is important to me that I offer exemplary service to our guests although I recognize everyone may not agree but it is my attempt to do so. Every individual has different perceptions about an incident. I know you had a bad one and I apologize for your experience. Thank you for your candid feedback which we really appreciate. Regards. I booked 15 rooms for a sports team for two nights. Our stay was supposed to be a team rate that included breakfast vouchers for free breakfast each day we were there. We also wanted to be close to the West Edmonton Mall.

There was a bit of confusion as some Holiday Inn websites say that this hotel is on 179A St when it is in fact on 170St. The hotel is only a month old but it's probably important to get the facts correct on the web.

First problem:
When we arrived in Edmonton we realized that the hotel was in fact not near the mall. The map provided by the hotel, which is still on their website, is incorrect. Hmmm...Probably important to give correct directions since people staying at the hotel are more than likely visitors to the city and have no idea where they are going.

Second problem:
A lot of the athletes were under 18 years old so all rooms were booked by me on my credit card. However, when they arrived to check in with their chaperones they were told that they needed to have a credit card to secure any extra charges. That was supposed to be on my CC…do they give credit cards to 14 year olds these days? They were told that incidentals were not to be put on my credit card. Strange...I thought the simple fact that it was my credit card meant that I had the right to say what is and isn’t charged to it. The athletes had to wait until someone with a credit card arrived to put the deposit for incidentals on their CC.

Third problem:
Every room had 4 athletes assigned to them and a separate confirmation number. The hotel had this list of names. The adult team was arriving at different times so I gave them all copies so they could check in on their own (good thing they had credit cards). They checked in all 4 people regardless of whether they had arrived or not. As the other members of the room arrived they were told they could not get a key as the other room members had all of the keys. When they then asked for the room number they were told that they couldn’t give out that information...even if it was their room. Really? A hotel can't give you your own room number? Isn't that kind of important when you stay at a hotel? They had to call their roommates long distance on their cell phones to see what room they were in. BUT if you forgot your room key you can just say what room you are staying in and get a card with no questions asked...not even ID. That's safe.

Fourth problem:
Upon my arrival I discovered that they had the wrong credit card information and the contract they had was for 20 rooms and did not have my signature on it. They did not have the latest contract I signed for 15 rooms. Neat. I gave my credit card information and all seemed good until I asked for our breakfast vouchers. I was told that we don't get them and that it wasn't in my contract. I had the group rate but none of the group perks. That's odd. After lengthy discussion with the clerks and after the clerk talked to the manager I was told that there was nothing they could do. I'd have to call the agent...on a Friday night at 10pm. Thanks. They also said that I could talk to the restaurant manager and see if he would work a deal. He had already left as it was 10pm. Front desk were completely unhelpful and not very apologetic or sympathetic. I called my travel agent who probably doesn’t work late on Friday night or on the weekend. Needless to say I did not get through and my 60 athletes and their parents were not happy.

Fifth problem:
In one of the rooms they discovered an unclean sheet when finally settling in for bed on the first night. A "stain", most likely human, was found on the sheets. NOT a nice thing to see when you are ready to hop into a fresh new hotel bed. A picture was taken and the front desk was called. The clerk offered them to change rooms but as it was 1:30am and they had fully unpacked and gotten ready to sleep. They just asked for their sheets to be changed. The front desk clerk explained that housekeeping is gone for the night. They then asked if he could come and change it and he replied that he wouldn’t know where to begin as he had never changed bed sheets before. Wow...I’m guessing he still lives at home. They took the sheet down to him and he was disgusted by the stain and did not want to touch it. He then took them tot he laundry room and told them to pick out what they needed to make a bed and they can change the sheets themselves. How nice of him to offer them clean sheets. The next day I made a complaint about him and the situation. I was later called to come down and discuss the situation as the manager and housekeeping manager inspected the so-called soiled sheets and found no stain. I took the digital camera down and they squinted trying to see the stain in the picture. They were still squinting and stressing to see the stain after I zoomed in. Perhaps Holiday Inn should look into an eye care benefit for their employees. They still didn't believe me but apologized as they're probably told to do by head office, and said they'd give me a credit for that room...I had already brought down the "satisfaction guaranteed" policy they have posted in their bathrooms. Clearly they didn't believe us. I never did meet this elusive manager.

Sixth problem:
It says late checkout available. The 15th room was apparently not booked with our group even though it was supposed to have been. They called for late check out and were told that it was fine. When our rooms called for late checkout it was apparently not fine and not available...which is fine...I'm sure there are people who are clamoring to get into our 14 rooms on a Sunday afternoon. After it was brought to their attention that one room had late checkout room 15 was called back and told that they no longer had late checkout and had to be out ASAP. Vindictive? Maybe a little.

On the second day we ended up getting vouchers for $3.50 off our breakfast. Still not what I asked for but at least it was some mildly better.

I spoke to the agent when we got back and she was livid. She worked out a credit for us and was appalled by the horrible service we received. She had confirmed everything with the manager before we arrived to make sure everything was set. She was told it would all be taken care of.

I have yet to hear anything from a manager who I had asked to speak with several times. I have had no kind of apology.

The travel agent is going to give me confirmation when the credit is applied to my CC....hopefully that will actually happen.

Summary:

Ambiance: Very good...nice and new. Beds are super. Shower pressure a bit low.

Location: Not where the map indicated. Actually quite far from WEM.

Restaurant: Yummy! Great sweet potato fries!

Staff: Not good. Sometimes friendly but not knowledgeable or helpful. Did not make us feel welcome even though we were paying to feel welcome. Felt like a bunch of relatives you don’t really like but your mom said you have to let stay with you for the weekend.

Overall: Don't stay here. I will take my 15 room booking elsewhere.

Booked this hotel for a 2 night stay. Bed was comfortable and the room was very clean. Small problem with the hair dryer not working but that was minor. Quiet place to stay - didn't hear any outside noises from the hallway (but maybe we were lucky!). I didn't use the pool but I checked it out - it is your standard rectangular pool with a small hot tub - nothing fancy. Too deep for me to take my toddlers (no shallow end). The parking was absolutely atrocious both nights - not the hotel's fault (some people parked in multiple spots with trailers) but there is no one monitoring the parking lot (we asked after a truck and trailer took up 10 spaces!). Very close to WEM - not walking distance but a short drive. I'd recommend this hotel for the business traveler, adult couple, or a family who is just staying there to sleep (no fun extras in the pool for kids). The fast and free WiFi, location, and value are worth staying here vs right in the mall.

I booked this hotel for a ringette team. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE OF THE FRONT DESK IS HORRIBLE! They gave us a noise warning the first night and we quieted down. The second night we were careful to be quiet and did not get asked to quiet down. The next morning I was told that I was getting charged for other's rooms because I signed a group agreement and we were noisy. When I said I wasn't told we were noisy, the front desk manager said he told us the night before. He asked if we wanted to see the video of our team running in the hallways and we said yes. The people running in the halls were not members of our team, the were other guests!
We also asked to use the breakfast room for a pizza party and were told we had to clean up after. We asked for garbage bags and cleaned it spotless, putting every chair back in its spot. We had the garbage tied and ready to go. The coach was told HE HAD TO TAKE OUT THE GARGE TO THE BINS IN THE BACK! We paid for 16 rooms, for 3 or 4 nights each, and not once we're we treated as guests. DO NOT BOOK A TEAM HERE!
WHEN I COMPLAINED I WAS TOLD SOMEONE WOULD GET BACK TO ME IN 48 HOURS, IT TOOK A MONTH FOR SOMEONE TO CALL ME!
