HI-Athabasca Falls is an idyllic mountain retreat. Five cedar panelled cabins sit amongst the trees at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. The mighty Athabasca River tumbles over the nearby falls. Horseshoe Lake with its enchanting mirrored water or spring-fed Leech Lake make for ideal summertime swims. In the winter, wake up in the cozy hostel and get ready for a day of cross-country skiing on a groomed trail that runs up the Geraldine Lakes road, or if you prefer the thrills of the downhill, Marmot Basin is a short drive away.HI-Athabasca offers a large common room, wood stove, firepit and deck. The accommodations are comfortable but basic: simple bunk beds, shared dorms, and no running water. In the summer, there is an outdoor "cowboy" shower for those not willing to brave a morning dip in the river. No Internet, no bar, just the forest cabin that you always dreamed of. Nothing will get you closer to getting away from it all.The Fryatt Valley and Athabasca Pass are easily accessed from the hostel offering cross-country skiing, hiking, and mountain biking opportunities. This is a wilderness hostel with limited creature comforts - no running water, no showers, and no flush toilets. We do have purified water for cooking, a refrigerator, stoves, and solar-powered lights. Due to our wilderness location, accessibility for the physically disabled is challenging.

My favourite wilderness hostel. The common area it's just so cozy and very wel organized. Also it shows that the managers are trying to keep the place clean and tidy, which definietly helps. The only bummer was that when we were there it was a lso a big group, which kind of prevent us to connect with other travellers, but they were still nice and respectful. Also the bedroom was quite spacious, and all the little details, like some kind of curtains between bunkbeds, make the place really special. It really shows when someone puts the effort to make a place nice, much appreciated.

We had a great stay here, the hostel is in a fantastic location just a short walk from the falls.

The common area is very well looked after and there is plenty of cooking equipment, seating etc. Unfortunately we did have a loud snoarer in our room for 2 nights, but this is something to be expected with shared rooms! Just remember to bring some earplugs just in case.

The gentleman running the hostel was very knowledgeable and more than happy to help where needed, also siggestions on where best to visit in the area. We stayed in Sep 22 when there was a wildfire that closed most of Jasper town, he was mote than willing to help other travellers with changes to their ownward journeys.

I would reccomend going to the falls early in the morning, they are absolutely stunning.

We stayed here in June 2022 and had a really memorable and lovely experience. We have been travelling Canada for one month and this was our favourite place that we stayed! The hostel exceeded our expectations and we were very well looked after by Jeff; he was so attentive and helpful and made sure that we had everything we needed at all times during our stay. It was a pleasure to meet Jeff and we look forward to staying here again in the future. Highly recommended! Jen and Bee x

This has to be the best hostel experience that we had on our Canada trip. It was one of the cleanest most welcoming hostels with every amenity that you could need. The communal kitchen and lounge space was fantastic and so homely. Not having a shower didn't bother us at all as it wasn't that warm but there was the option to shower at the HI in Jasper. We loved the peace and quiet and it was an easy 20 minute drive to Jasper.

The hotel is labelled a wilderness hostel. It's a nice set up that could use a shower. Don't expect it to be in the wilderness as it's just off of the highway.
The staff here are the worst. If you are not part of a packaged tour, They make you feel unwelcome. It's advertised as having a kitchenette but don't expect the employee to use it to make a cup of tea after a day of hiking.
The employee here thinks it cute to mock strangers he doesn't know. He also is very rigid with rules like being allowed to make your supper or a cup of tea that he seems to make up as he goes as long. He's not a people person and could work on his people skills if he wants things to be so rigid with the customers.
The worst is his 830am wake up call when check out is at 10. He makes it clear from check in that he doesn't want you there as customers are treated as being a nuisance.
Not only does he micro manage your wake up but also does the same with your making breakfast and hangs looking over your shoulder to correct you on your scrub technique cleaning the dishes.
I would highly recommend staying at one of the many people friendly hostels that are located in Jasper and avoid this one at all costs.

We (two adults and three kids) spent a wonderful few nights at Hi Athabasca. Think, really cosy Scottish bothy type accommodation mixed with clean facilities, a roaring fire and really comfy beds and you have Hi Athabasca. Situated next to the waterfall and an easy 25 minute drive north of jasper, the hostel is surrounded by natural beauty and great days out. All of this, however, would be nothing without the mighty Jeff (the warden) who looks after and cleans the hostel daily. He is an excellent host, ready to help and full of knowledge. I cannot recommend this place enough.

First things first, this is a wilderness hostel. There is no running water, no flush toilets, no wifi. What this DOES offer is an immaculate rustic lodge with great management and great travelers. The manager, Jeff, takes a great deal of pride in this place and works his butt off to ensure everything is neat, clean, and above any standards the guests could have.

There is plenty of kitchen equipment, so making meals is a breeze, and while you're cooking and eating you get the pleasure of meeting outgoing adventurers from around the world. The sleeping arrangements are very comfortable, although the dorm I was in slept 12. A couple nights I had someone in the room who would snore loudly, but that isn't anything some earplugs can't fix.

I can't say enough good things about this place. You absolutely will not regret staying here.

I stayed here as part of a small group tour and had booked a private room here. I have to confess that as I am not use to staying in hostels anyway, and the fact this was a 'wilderness' hostel, I was nervous about staying here as I do like my home comforts. But after staying for one night I LOVE this place! It far EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS and actually ended up been one of the best nights of my entire 3 week trip. The hostel is VERY clean and obviously managed well. The log burning fire in the main lounge and kitchen area makes the place so cosy and welcoming and was a great place to meet other travellers. The private room/cabin I had was large and the bed was comfortable and even as a solo female traveller I felt safe there. The outside toilets were also clean but I would definitely bring a torch with you for any night time toilet stops!! I would definitely recommend a night or twos stay here.

I have been coming to this hostel for over 20 years and it has never looked better. It is clean, comfortable and unique. Lots of upgrades over the years have made it a wonderful stay. Easy parking, safe drinking water, log cabin feel inside, clean rooms. One of the best wilderness, rustic hostels in the system. Thanks to Kumi for great hospitality recently and for Jeff who has been overseeing many improvements for years!

Rooms are large with many bunks, common room is available 24 hours. No wifi, drop toilets, microwave is available but you're asked to use the hob if possible due to the amount of energy it uses. Be aware of these things before you stay so you're not disappointed - because across the road are the stunning Athabasca Falls. Take a book, go sit by the river and watch the mountains. It gets busy there around 9 so be sure to go early for some tranquility. You are in the wilderness - make the most of it.
