Mountain Glacier Viewing Heaven!!!

The views are unbeatable for any mountain glacier lover. Just a quick walk, or drive, from the hotel gets you to the toe of the glacier! 360 degrees of endless views. Lots of hiking trails as well. Easy access to the discovery centre & it’s gorgeous shop. The room was very spacious & super modern in look. Also, it’s very quiet both inside & outside the room. Staff were very friendly & super helpful! Not a single staff member was rude or impolite. From the moment we parked & unloaded our luggage, we were greeted in the parking lot by a lovely staff member who helped us bring our luggage to our room. They invited us for to their welcome cocktail hour (between 5-6pm) but we had our tour booked at the SkyWalk & unfortunately missed it! It was definitely a gorgeous drive to & from the hotel as it’s one of the few properties you see/pass.

The price of a room (even though it’s modern in look & newly updated) for one night IS truly a bit steep for what you get. No hotel “extras” in ways of a pool or hot tub BUT that did not upset our choice in staying here. We also found the restaurant pricing a bit high as well & decided to drive into Jasper for dinner. We booked in for 4 guests, 2 adults & 2 children, but were stocked with minimal towels. No extras to be found but honestly didn’t bother too ask for more either; we just made it work.

Note: The stretch on 93 between Jasper & Banff is stunning BUT be sure to gas up because you won’t have many, if any, options.

From the minute we arrived in the parking lot, we were met by amazing staff who unloaded our car and sent our luggage right to our room. Every staff member we came in contact with ( and it was a lot) was so friendly, welcoming and did their best with humour. The hotel was super clean, food good (but expensive) and the view amazing. Another perk you might not think about is that no one was around before 9am. You basically have the whole area for just hotel guest. So peaceful!

We stayed at the Lodge on July 14 to 15, 2020 and had great weather. We took the Skywalk tour on the evening of the 14th, and the glacier tour the following morning. During our stroll in the air, we saw beautiful white mountain goats with their tiny kids blithely walking along vertical rock faces. Took great photos.
The tour to the ice field the following morning was cool but truly informative. Everyone who values clean, fresh water will appreciate it all the more for standing on this incredible mass of ice, and learning not only its history but also how it ultimately reaches the water taps in our homes. Our driver and narrator, John, has spent many years in this area, and he commented on the fortitude of early explorers such as David Thompson who found their way through these incredible mountains with challenging conditions.
The Lodge is wonderful. We had a glacier view room and kept the drapes open all night so we could see the mountains. Dinner was excellent (my test of a great dining room is the ability to order a beef tenderloin “blue” and mine was perfect!), and we enjoyed an outstanding breakfast the following morning.
The reservation system is a true challenge. To make or change a reservation demands patience and perseverance. Because the system call centre serves several locations, the response time for a change or return call is slow.

I am not entirely certain if the issue is resulting from the covid attrition of guests but we found our 2 night stay to be lukewarm at best. The entire area locks down very early in the evening and the restaurants are limited in both the hours of operations and the menu options. They seem to have put in place some good covid protocols but on the same token, they open the shops and acess to busloads of visitors during the day that are circulating in the same areas as all other lodge guest except for the rooms corridor wich is not much protection when you come to think about it.
Our most upsetting issue is surely from the restaurant breakfast hours ending at a mere 9:30 am. For us it was an issue, specially when the lunch restaurant did not open until later, which created a gap that we got caught in. We were turn down for breakfast at 9:38 am, 8 minutes after the last serving. We did not expect that.
We paid huge dollars for our 2 day stay and not having a restaurant at our disposition in the middle of the morning was a peeve that I will not soon forget. Over rated and under served. I will not recommend this place to anyone. We have been to the icefields before and thought the lodge would be a great place to recharge during our 2 weeks holidays but if you can't even sleep in on the first morning without having the risk of not getting breakfast, why pay them all that money in the end? I will have infused over $1,500.00 at this lodge for 2 nights including meals and activities and yet, I felt treated no better than a 3 star hotel with no expectations. Over paid, over rated and under served.

With continued uncertainty of travel restrictions we decided to stay in Alberta for our anniversary. This was a great place to stop between Banff and Jasper although it was a bit pricey. The rooms were good and had no carpet which is nice to see. The lobby is amazing however we found the chairs were always occupied and the people were always on their devices instead of enjoying the view. It would be nice to have the area as device free so those who wish to can enjoy the view.

We also ate at Altitude - as there are limited places to eat that are close. Rocky Mountain Soap amenities were nice however for this price I would like to see nicer Kleenex and toilet tissue products, not the commercial generic kind.

Stayed one night this last weekend, and also took the Icefield Adventure Package with the hotel stay.

The hotel is a bit on the pricey side, but overall the rooms were exceptionally spacious and well-designed. I was told the rooms were renovated within the last year or so. There was also a wine/cheese/meats reception in the late afternoon prior to our departure to the Skywalk for a private tour. And private it was...normally, the tour is private to all those guests that have booked the package, which is pretty private to begin with. But we got really lucky, and we were alone on the Skywalk with our guide.

By the way, shoutout as well to Hanna, Duncan, and Evangeline for their knowledge, experience, and care in guiding us out on the Skywalk and later, the next moring, to the Athabasca Glacier.

There is a dinner available following the Skywalk tour, but we did not attend.

After spending the night in our fantastic glacier-view suite, we were provided breakfast at Altitude restaurant, prior to heading out for our private tour of the glacier. Again, we were extremely lucky in being alone with our guide Duncan and our driver Evangeline on the ice. Duncan gave us hot chocolate, and we were shown around the ice.

This wasn't a cheap hotel stay and tour in any way, but the hotel was beautiful and the tour guides and private tours make up for the cost. Overall, we really enjoyed the stay/adventure and would recommend it to others.

The ONLY negative I could say is the Glacier View is really out of the way of other attractions...I'm not sure how well the hotel would work if you wanted to use it as a hub for your time in the Canadian Rockies.

An incredibly relaxed and personal stay. No pool or gym, but other fun options like board games, stargazing with a guide and the skywalk. Ask for Kelsey as your guide, he’s so friendly and knows all the best spots in the area. This lodge has an epic Swiss coffee machine with endless refills, Banff tea, and all the bathroom products are from Rocky Mountain Soap Company. It was beautiful and quiet. The perfect place to unwind.

I spent over 500$ hotel fees, will I take worth 2 dollars soaps which we haven't seen them when we settle in at first beginning.

Hotel offered good view of Athabasca glacier. Room was very comfortable and spacious with good amenities. The lounge offered high quality tea & coffee and daily happy hours (hors d'oeuvre with drinks) were a bonus. The restaurant has fixed menu every day and a bit pricey but the quality of food was good. Karan did an outstanding job by providing us good suggestion on the menu and was very attentive. Front desk lady was also going out of her way to help guests in any way she can. Only thing to improve was the shower, shower pressure was very weak. Overall, we had good experience and would recommend this hotel to others.

We spent one night at the hotel. I was traveling with my two sons. Our room was nice with 3 queen beds so very comfortable for me and two tall boys who each needed their own bed. Only issue with the room is that the thermostat didn't work and we were unable to adjust temperature in the room. That was very annoying but we were too tired to notify the staff and have them come and fix it. Cappaccino machine in lobby was a nice amenity. Front desk gal was very helpful. You should be aware that the hotel is co-located with the Columbia Icefield tourist attraction and the property is swarming with tourists. You only get some privacy when you take the elevator to the third floor which is where the hotel is located. We were very disappointed in the restaurant as service was very poor. At dinner, we sat for 20 minutes before our waitress even came by and then said "I'm sorry I didn't know you were here". Lovely. It took over 30 minutes to get our entrees and my second cocktail arrived after we had paid the bill. That's how disorganized the place is. It appears understaffed but they need to address the problem as we paid $180 for dinner for 3 people. The hotel is expensive and for those prices service needs to be much better. The problem is that there are no restaurant alternatives as its the ONLY place you can eat if you stay there. The location is good as its probably the only place to stay between Banff and Jasper along the Icefields Parkway. Sadly, though, I would avoid the hotel again due to the service issues. It's also expensive as we paid $500 for the room with all the taxes included. Seems too high to me for the experience offered. Its too bad there isn't some competition nearby for the hotel and restaurant as I think it would help them to sharpen their operation.

Dear birdieman123, Thanks for visiting us at the Glacier View Lodge and leaving a review. We value each guest and read each review as we strive to provide the best experience possible. It's great to hear you found the room layout comfortable for your family. The loft rooms are one of my favorites as well. I'm sorry to hear that you found the arrival at our location a little overwhelming. We strive to provide our guests with a relaxing experience and I'm happy that you noticed a contrast between the floors of our shared location. It's unfortunate that you had trouble with the temperature in your room. I'll be sure our maintenance team adjusts the temperature as we prepare for our colder season. I was disappointed to read about your experience at Altitude. It's actually one of three outlets at the Columbia Icefield Discovery Center: Altitude (the upscale casual a la carte dining option), Chalet (our quick service option), and Starbucks is new this year offering your traditional beverages. I will be sure to pass your comments on to our team so we can address the issues you faced. It saddens me to hear that you didn't find value in your stay with us. But I am happy that you mentioned our great front desk staff (I'll be sure to pass your kind words on to Bronte and Erika) and that you enjoyed the additional amenities like our complimentary gormet coffee machine and ice water. Thank you for visiting, I hope you enjoy the rest of your time in the Canadian Rockies. Kind Regards, Duncan Poulsen Hotel Supervisor
