the staff was not polite. The Manger does not have a pleasing personality to explain details about the billing. The breakfast was controlled as is you are stealing from them!
When we first arrived we asked to view a room as we were a little uneasy about the location and condition of the hotel - the room seems okay - a few things out of place but nothing we couldnt manage to get over.
Later in the evening we had a maintenance issue with the room - the toilet had plugged. We informed the front desk of the situation and they would not bring a plunger to the room stating that we would lose our damage deposit if we didnt come to the front desk and locate a plunger. I've stayed in many hotels and never been asked to come collect and plunge my own toilet. When the water started coming over the top of the toilet the front desk staff advised we would be losing out 200$ incidental fee - Excuse me, this is clearly a maintenance issue and should have been handled forthwright by the hotel.
An hour later after the toilet was flooding the hotel owner barged into our room threatening us with physical violence for arguing with his daughter the night audit lady for the toilet issue. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH - we called the RCMP who had to come mitigate the situation - we got our damage deposit and money back and relocated to the Delta Grande Okanagan Resort and Conference Centre - best decision -
Avoid this Hotel! - at all cost

He gave us our room keys which had our room numbers written in sharpie on them. My fear was that if I lose a card somebody can enter my room at night. It seemed like a great inconvenience for him to wipe that off. He did, however, make sure to tell us to bring the keys back at the end of our stay otherwise we would be charged $5 for a new key. We didn't realize our keys were made from gold.
We checked into our room and checked it over. I counted five hairs in the bathtub. The paint is peeling from the walls. Spider webs all over the windows. A few hours later our toilet plugs, which was my fault. I called the desk asking for a plunger and the girl, who I later found out was the man's daughter, told me that they don't have any plungers and that because I had plugged the toilet they would be charging me my $200 damage deposit. So I asked to speak to the manager and was told he was not available. A plunger should have been delivered to my room. I did not ask you to plunge the toilet, I asked for you to bring me one so I can do it myself. I asked for some customer service. After we argued with her to find a solution, the manager stormed into our room, slammed the door behind him, and told us we threatened his daughter by saying we wanted better service. Fine. So we got the police involved, who were able to get my $200 back.
We took our business to the Delta Grand and had such an amazing stay there, I don't even know why I booked at the Hojo in the first place. Whoever that man was should not be running hotels.
While traveling to Kelowna I got stuck in a terrible snow storm .I tried to cancel my reservation and was told that I was going to be billed in full .I decided to continue on and arrive to the hotel in Kelowna at approximate 23:00 .
To my great surprise I was told that my reservation was cancelled and I would have to make a new one . After a long discussion I was told that my reservation (which was paid in full )would be respected . I was then asked for a $ 200 deposit ! After another long discussion I was told that there was no other option . 2 of my credit cards were declined and I was told that they would do me a ''favour'' and accept a $ 200 cash deposit ...which I got from one of the cards that was declined ...I finally checked in at midnight....
To my horrendous surprise I found dirty and smelly hallways and a room where there was not a total of $ 200 of value ! Smell of smoking would actually be welcomed ! Being extremely tired after such an exhausting trip I,I decided to stay anyways.Unfortunately , I got woken up at 3:00 AM by a loud party on my floor .I called front desk and got no answer .This continued until 6:00 AM when the noisy group finally decided to check out .At this moment I finally reached the front desk where the person in charge told me ''Look buddy we already had a problem with you at check in '' .I have NEVER been spoken like this in ANY hotel in the more than 80 countries I have visited in my life .I went down to complain person , where I found a locked door . then called the front desk to compali again and was told to wait until 7:30 AM until th lobby opened !!!
While waiting for the lobby to open I received a visit from the Police , who I thought were called in because of the raucous of the party ,but to my great surprise they were called in by the rude front desk woman in order to evict me !!
I have never ,ever been so humiliated in my whole life. Even though this Howard Johnson is a disgraceful, dirt, smelly over priced ''hotel'' , that throws out a guest because he complains of not having been able to get a shut eye of sleep . Keep away !!!!!
When we pulled into this run down place, we were extremely confused by the very dark parking lot that we could not even see across (we felt a little worried about our safety). Too make matters worse, the parking lot and sidewalk surrounding the building was like a graveyard of old furniture and carpets (not very safe for small children to even walk). We were even more confused to walk into the main doorway and see that "Wayside Inn" or something to that effect was still etched into the main window (we kind of thought that before having a grand opening, the old name would have been removed! Makes good business sense! Don't you think?)
Going against our initial impression of the hotel, as we had already prebooked a room, and it was very late, we decided to see what surprises our room would hold for us... hoping for something half decent! (after all it was recently renovated!) Well, we had our surprise all right! The "completely renovated" room, actually was just the bathroom. The furniture, carpet and bedding all looked as if it was original from when the place was first built! (old and hardly the clean carpet we needed for our infant asthmatic son!) To make matters worse, we could hear multiple conversations from our different neighbours through the walls and people's footsteps in the hall. Even though, it was eleven o'clock at night by this point we decided to leave for the safety of our son's health. We would rather have had no room that night than this one!
When we went to the desk to complain, we were told there was no way the room was not clean as it had been "gutted" and completely redone (it was very obvious that this was not the case!) We were treated very rudely and did not even get a refund! The management was even worse than the hotel itself!!!) By the way we did find a brand new hotel with modern everything for $10 more across the street!
However, Howard Johnson the chain did come through and resolved this issue, so our complaint is only with this location!
