I needed a simple, safe, clean, and affordable place to stay for one night. I trusted the reviews of the Buccaneer Inn and decided to support this independent business rather than rely on a chain or franchise hotel. Don't let the outdated look put you off, this place is epitome of cleanliness!

I stayed in the "Cozy Studio" which is located at the far end of the ground floor. The room was spotless and had no fragrance whatsoever. Sheets and towels were soft and fresh like you would find in a high end spa.

The only downsides were hearing guests using the metal stairs to the upper floor (luckily that happened only once as most guests used the main stairs closer to the office) and hearing the occasional truck drive by. Both instances didn't really bother me, but may be bothersome to others.

I would definitely stay here again! Above and beyond my expectations.

Thank you so much Guido for your glowing review. We are so happy to know that your stay with us was above and beyond your expectations and that you had faith in the reviews fellow TripAdvisor members left. And thank you very much for supporting an independant, locally owned and operated small business. We try to be as local as we can be in all our purchasing decisions and are happy you were too. All of us that are part of The Buccaneer live locally and their wages and ours stay in the community. Our Cozy Studio is our only room with the bedroom at the front of the motel so there is, as you noted, a bit of noise. All our other rooms and suites have the bedroom at the back of the property and might be a better choice for other guests. Thanks for pointing that out. We look forward to welcoming you back Guido. And perhaps you can try a different room type next time. Kind regards. Your hosts, Dave and Marlene

I have no idea how many hotels I have stayed at over my career as a consultant but whenever I am in Nanaimo I always stay at the Buccaneer Inn. It's not fancy but it is, to use that horrible word, authentic. It is owned and operated by locals who clearly love Nanaimo and love what they do. The rooms incorporate local art and there is a wonderful visitors' guide (which includes a Nanaimo Bar recipe). In the time of COVID I felt completely safe and comfortable at the Inn.

We had the smallest studio which was perfect for us for our one night stay. We wanted somewhere straight off the ferry where we could rest and recharge ready to start our explanation of Vancouver Island the next morning. The Buccaneer Inn fitted the bill perfectly. The facilities were spotless, the bed comfortable and the supplied fans provided us with all the ventilation we needed for a sound night’s sleep. The walk into the Nanaimo Old Town will take a good half hour but there is the option of taking a scenic route along the harbour.

Thank you so much Anne. It was nice to have hosted and spoken with you. We are so glad you enjoyed our Cozy Studio. At 160 square feet it packs in a lot of amenities (shower, fridge, microwave, tv, queen bed, table and two chairs) and has a wee view of Newcastle Channel. It is a very popular choice for folks like you who are looking for a short stay, straight off the ferry who want a spotless room and good sleep at an affordable rate. We hope you enjoy the rest of your visit to Vancouver Island! Your hosts, Dave and Marlene

There are not enough adjectives to describe this motel....clean, immaculate, cute, comfortable, convenient, homey and the list goes on. Dave and Marlene have created an oasis and you truly feel like a guest in their “home”. Every detail has been well thought out and pride of ownership shows. The beds and pillows are really comfortable, the kitchenette has everything you need and was nice to have for a quick breakfast. During our stay, Nanaimo was having a heat wave and the rooms are not air conditioned but fans are supplied and a nice nightly breeze helped to cool off the room. Both Dave and Marlene suggested fantastic places to eat and visit. Would absolutely stay here again! Thankyou Dave and Marlene!

The reviews were right - the Buccaneer Inn is spotless and the hosts friendly, offering great advice and tips! Thanks Marlene for encouraging us stop at Qualicum Beach on our trip to Campbell River - we had a great lunch and even dipped our toes in the ocean.

It was good to get insights from Dave too. We enjoyed our chats with him!

The rooms had everything we needed for our stay, comfy bed, good kitchen (though we only used the fridge, kettle and coffee maker), great bathroom. It was very quiet inspite of being on a main road and we slept really well.

The information pack has loads of really useful (and honest) details. From places to eat and visit to TV channels available. And if you can't find an answer to your question the team were there to help.

The Inn is very close to Nanaimo which we really enjoyed visiting. It's not especially geared up for tourists but we found friendly people, some good places to eat and interesting locations to visit (Protection Island is fascinating).

Would definitely recommend!

One of the highest rated properties in Nanaimo. Nothing spectacular about the property or amenities but the owners and staff have exceeded all requirements for cleanliness, etc. and our stay was very comfortable. Centrally located, nice view of harbour and bed was very comfortable. Nice little suite with everything you could need. May need to stay longer next time :) Highly recommended.

Recently stayed one night as was coming from Vancouver ferry and needed accommodation near downtown. Owners have taken care of this motel, and I was amazed on how clean our room ( suite 201) was. They must meticulously clean, paint and touch up each room. Met Marlene upon check in, and Dave on check out. Found out we even knew some people in same circles. Will recommend and not hesitate to come back. Next time, will try some of their local restaurant recommendations.

Looking over the manicured garden surround the parking lot, to the marina and wooded island beyond.....basking in lots of space, really well maintained facility, and thoughtful touches like a wood burning fireplace including Duraflame logs, books to read with the fire going, a fully equipped kitchen, and a really comfy bed. Family run, and you can feel and see the pride!
I’m just here overnight for a work trip, but would be a good base for a longer stay exploring the Island. Busy street when the ferry comes and goes, but quiet at night. I did get a suite.....haven’t seen the standard rooms, but highly recommend the top floor suite!

I have travelled extensively throughout Europe and North America and my stay at the Buccaneer Inn was memorable for the best customer service. Friendly knowledgeable staff from the moment we booked to our departure. In fact we couldn’t find my son’s favourite hat on our departure day. Dave phoned me later to let me know they had found it. Since he knew we were travelling by bus he actually drove the hat to the old quarter where we were having lunch!
The rooms were comfortable and extremely clean. Great for families!

Thanks Amelia! It was lovely to have met you and your family and so happy you enjoyed your visit to Vancouver Island. Glad your suite was extremely clean and comfortable. Our son lost something very valuable to him on one of our trips and he was despondent for a long time, so we know how important it is to get things like favourite hats back. Glad it all worked out. Hope to see you all again on your next visit to Vancouver Island. Your hosts, Dave and Marlene

My two friends and I stayed at The Buccaneer on August 1st. When we arrived, we discovered we'd been upgraded to a very nice room with a king-size bed and a hide-a-bed, however, since my friends are brother and sister, it wasn't ideal. The manager called the owner, who showed up within about five minutes. She graciously offered to put me in a separate room, and my friends remained in their upgraded suite.

I was so impressed by how quickly the problem was resolved and by how compassionate and understanding the owners were (we met the husband the next morning as we left). I truly have never met with such graciousness and consideration for their guests from any "innkeepers" anywhere I've traveled! They truly understand and practice the notion of hospitality and are definitely in the right business!

As for our rooms, they were lovely and truly spotless! Based on our experience, I have no hesitation about giving The Buccaneer five stars!

Dear MarciaL, Thanks for your question. During these challenging times we have changed our cleaning protocols. Usually for a 3 day stay we would provide you with sufficient towels, coffee and other amenities for the duration of your stay and not enter your suite. We offer an exchange system where you can leave out any towels or linens you'd like replaced and we will replenish them and leave them in the laundry hamper outside of your room. Garbage and recycling can be left outside of your room and we will collect it. If you would like to discuss this further please call us toll-free at 1-877-282-6337. We look forward to welcoming you. Travel safe. Your hosts, Dave and Marlene

Thanks for message Art. A few options. If you are hiring a car you could select a company with an office at the airport and drive into town. About a 20 minute drive. If you're on your own then the Nanaimo Airporter may be your best value. Believe it is $25 one way per person. Two or more and a taxi might be more cost efficient. Believe it is $40 or so one way to us. Hope that helps. Your host, Dave

Easy, yes but to get there from Nanaimo, explore for a few hours and get back is a full-day project. The distance from Nanaimo to Tofino is a bit misleading. A portion of that road is very slow, there is semi-permanent road work and a lot of traffic.

I don't think so. It is a long drive to Ucluelet and Tofino from Nanaimo. Move as soon as you arrive by ferry towards Ucluelet and book one night in Nanaimo a day before the ferry. I really recommend Buccaneer Inn for that. While driving to Ucluelet don't forget to stop at Cathedral Grove. Fantastic memories from there.
