I have stayed at the Carmi for 3 years in a row. The motel is very unassuming located next to the Dairy Queen on Main Street. The rooms are a throwback to the late 60's/70's, and many of the rooms are strange sizes and on the dark side. The motel looks like an Alpen style with white outer walls accented with dark brown beams. If you are looking for a Holiday Inn style hotel with the same generic look, there is a Best Western down the road and it will cost you. The Carmi's rooms depending on the season are generally $79 -$89 for a simple queen bed. If you were to try to get a room at one of the motels on the strip by the Okanagan Lake beach in Penticton, you would pay @ $129.00 per night. (Campsites in Kelowna can run you $75 a night to tent)
The rooms are clean, but as I said they are dark, so it is not for a family where cleanliness is the biggest factor in choosing a room. The beds are fine, not too hard, not too soft, but don't expect top of the line mattresses at these prices - you won't wake up with your back out of joint.
They do have a pool which is kept quite cool for cooling off during the hot summer days.
The shower's water pressure is ample, although the towels are a washed out chocolate brown (to keep with the decor). Yes there are chips in the porcelain sink and the furniture is literally from the 60's and 70's, but as I've said this place is all about saving you money so you can spend it eating out, or touring the wineries. Kitchenettes are also available (make sure you wash all the dishes and glassware otherwise they charge $30), and each room has an air conditioner (yes the old kind that hang out the windows.)
So, overall the hotel would rate an average to poor for it's look and dated decor, but the money you save for sleeping there for 6 to 8 hours a night will have you smiling the next morning. Many others have given this place negative reviews... and they probably expected much more but clearly they wanted the cheap price... you get what you pay for! (Next time, ask to see the room before you pay for it.) If you want a nice clean, pristine bright room... you're gonna pay over $120 a night for it... the B&B's are way over that price!

Our team stayed at the Carmi and it was a very good experience. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The staff was very accommodating and helpful. The team had a great time in the pool which was spotless and cleaned every day. It's not a 5-star hotel but if you're looking for a motel with a reasonable price, it's a great place to stay.

I've stayed here a few times over the years for conventions. In fact a good portion of the people involved have stayed here too. It's not a five star, but it is what it needs to be. The place is clean, there are fridges in most rooms, the beds are ok, and the staff/reception are always courteous.
I see a few other complaints here about the pool, but whenever I have stayed here, the pool has been clean.
It's one of the cheaper motels to stay at, and if you're trying to save a few $$$, then this is your place.

A big group of us stay here every year and we love it. Never once had a problem. House keeper is super sweet and nice, the family that run it are great, it's clean, very affordable and is near a lot of key places.

As the only other review of the inn mentioned: the receptionist was polite and accommodating. The room smells like it has been smoked in for he past 40 years. The pool was green with algea and motel in my opinion the inn should be condemned.

This was a great motel, We needed a room for one night and it worked out great for us. Not for hoighty people but for an at home feel this is the place. Wonderful Manager and a lovely garden. There is a pool but when we were there it wasn't in season same with the question about air conditioner. Didn't need to use it so can't say anything about it.

This place serves as a great base. It is in the middle of penticton, and close to downtown. The rooms are a little outdated, but unless you are hanging out in their, who cares. They have a nice pool to take a dip in and outside patio area. The wifi is very spotty and drops randomly, just use the DQ wifi it's easier.

I will be staying here again

We had planned to camp in Penticton, but made the mistake of arriving on a Friday - without a reservation. Of course, many of the hotels & motels were full as well, but we finally phoned the Carmi and they were able to hold a room for us.

This motel is located right in the middle of Skaha and Okanagan Lakes. It really is a central location and there are lots of restaurants and stores in the area.

There is no question that this is an older hotel. However, it had everything we needed. There was a fridge, micro, kettle and coffee maker (w/coffee). The room (2 beds) was very large and we had lots of space for the three of us. The bathroom was smaller, but it was clean. The cleaning staff seemed to do a good job of cleaning up and leaving clean glasses and cups. There was also more than enough soap, shampoo and towels provided.

The outdoor pool was very clean. There was plenty of seating provided and they even had pool toys like noodles and mattresses for guests to use.

If you are expecting something very modern, like a BW or Hilton, don't stay here. But, if you are looking for a clean place to stay, with everything you need without huge prices, this is a good option. For the three of us, it was just over $100/night (plus taxes, of course).

One other note, DH lost his cap and sunglasses. Turns out he left them at the front desk and they were there waiting when he finally thought to go and ask. Certainly they provide honest service!

It is with a heavy heart that I write this review..... So I will start with the good. The lady/owners at the front desk were super nice. We rolled into Penticton on a weekend at 2pm with no reservations, so we were lucky to get anything I guess. They showed us a room, we were horrified, asked them to hold it, drove around trying to find something else to no avail so we went back and they were true to thier word and held it for us. We had a room on the main level adjacent to the Dairy Queen parking lot so we had headlights and gay music coming in our room windows for the better part of the evening. The rooms had appliances salvaged from a mueseum. The washroom was so getto and nasty I threw out the sandles I used to shower with. The hotel room had that funky deoderizer smell and it was so strong it burned your nose. The walls had mystery stains on them. The sheets were clean but the materess felt like it belonged in a brothel. Dark and dank are the best words to describe the experince overall. Would be better off in a tent honestly. I wish I had snapped some pics to prove how bad it was.

We stayed here in the fall during the off season, which may or may not have accounted for the cheap price. After spending 2 nights, I regret not having paid more for a room in a chain hotel that might have actually cared about the guests.

When we first got to the room my girlfriend could barely open the door. I helped, and the door was so tightly jammed in the frame I'd be amazed if a less mobile senior could even open the door.

I would really prefer to write this review in a more professional manner, but I think the list an its explanations would be too much, so I'm just going to go with point form on this.

Cons:

*The majority of "guests" are permanent and therefor have various friends showing up at all times, with yelling back and forth as they come and go.

*Many of the permanent renters are outside almost all the time, often smoking.

*There were kids doing laps around the wooden walkways all around the motel on scooters. Although the noise was very loud, it was intermittent. This was a minor nuisance, but obviously one attributed to the fact this motel caters to permanent guests

*There is an apartment building almost just behind the motel. At various times of both nights we could hear yelling and music from behind our room. At one point we left for dinner and saw running vehicle (where the music was coming from) at the back of this apartment with what looked like homeless people hanging out around the vehicle.

*The carpets are disgustingly dirty. When getting into bed the first night I noticed the bottoms of my feet were almost black. I had been barefoot since we got to the motel about 2 hours earlier, and was sitting on the bed for half that time. I have never seen my feet this dirty, so I quickly washed my feet so they were completely clean and then walked around the room continuously for about 1 or 2 minutes. I checked my feet and they were brown. Even if everything else about this motel was positive, this alone would make we never consider staying again. I have never seen anything like this. I'm quite sure the carpets haven't been cleaned in at least a decade.

*Our upstairs neighbour was extremely loud and obviously very heavy footed. Every step echoed in our room and their TV was almost always on very loud, to the point where you could easily hear the words from the TV. After it finally quieted down around midnight, we were able to fall asleep. But then again around 2am the upstairs TV turned on at near max volume and the stomping began again. The next morning I complained and the manager said it was just a single retired lady (just another permanent renter), so basically no hope for the next guest. She said she'd tell the lady about the noise, and as soon as I walked back to the room I heard the upstairs phone ringing. The conversation went on for about 5 minutes, so I can only imagine what they were complaining about together (actual motel guests). The next night the TV was on again all night but slightly quieter, but the stomping was no different.

*The bed in our room must have been at least 20 years old. The springs/support were completely gone, and with two of us in the queen size bed the mattress would immediately compress in the middle and we would wake up being crammed together in the middle 40% of the bed. Neither of us is overweight, so the beds are obviously toast. The first morning I woke up with such a bad back that I made sure to keep myself on the very last 8-10 inches of the mattress for the second night, where the mattress actually still have some structure.

*The bathtub/shower faucet is completely worthless. I hope this isn't the case in every room, but in our room the faucet dial couldn't actually control the water temperature. After turning the dial to a good temperature, the water would quickly cool within a couple minutes. At first we thought we were running out of hot water, but then found the dial would deliver hot water, but only if you held the dial in an exact spot that it wouldn't stay on its own. If you turned the dial all the way hot, the water was still cool. You could force the dial past max and it would click, and then give hot water for about 5 seconds. The only spot on the dial to get reliable hot water after 2 minutes was to physically hold the the dial in this no-mans-land. This kind of works when filling a bath, but just imagine it when trying to shower.

Pros:

*It was cheap.
*Dairy Queen is basically attached to the parking lot (if you like ice cream)

Well, when starting this review I hoped it would be quicker. But, after getting into things I guess that wasn't the case. In the end, I can say I would never again stay at the Carmi Motor Inn. If it was free and I was desperate, then I would possibly stay here, but still, I'd rather pay $100 to stay somewhere else than to stay here for free.
