We have just returned from a trip to Tofino. What a find in Harvey-House. Newly built, decorated and furnished - very cosy, well equipped, just superb. The hospitality from Nicky and Chris was second to none.
Imagine having your delicious, freshly cooked breakfast left outside your bedroom door to be collected and consumed in your own room overlooking the rain forest. If you're feeling really lazy it could be breakfast in the superbly comfortable bed - the sheets were like silk.
Nicky and Chris were brilliant in offering their local knowledge and were only too pleased to book trips or make restaurant reservations.
Don't go there - we want to keep it to ourselves!!!!

We picked the Harvey House B&B largely because of its excellent reviews on TripAdvisor and very glad we did. To start with, this B&B is in a quiet location and very close to Chesterman Beach and its vast expanse of open beach. This B&B was opened about 2008 and has recently changed hands which might give some people a degree of concern but it certainly lived up to all of the rave reviews it has received over the years from our perspective so the current owners are certainly committed to the same very high standard that has been set over the past several years.

We opted for the Rainforest Room which was the most spacious room we have ever encountered in a Canadian B&B and comes with free Wi-Fi. The room was absolutely spotless with a spacious sitting and dining area and a full ensuite bath. The large windows overlook the rain forest on the eastern boundary of the property. Those who might wish to hear the roar of the pounding surf on Chesterman Beach might want to consider one of the other two rooms which face west in the direction of the beach.

The breakfasts we had over the course of three days were excellent in all respects. Breakfasts are brought to the room at 08:30 but those who may prefer a B&B with communal breakfasts and conversation with guests may want to consider other B&B options in the area. However, in our case, we were both coming off a rather stressful several months and welcomed the opportunity for total privacy and quiet. For those couples who might want a quiet, intimate getaway without distractions, I can think of no B&B in our experience that offers a better setting and services than does The Harvey House B&B.

This B&B is but a few minutes drive from the town centre and is a short walk of no more than five minutes to Chesterman Beach so I can think of no better location anywhere in the area. The room rates are most reasonable especially given the quality of this facility which equals or exceeds any Canadian B&B we have stayed in. This is one B&B we would not hesitate to recommend, especially for couples looking for a quiet getaway, and we will definitely stay at it again next time we visit the Tofino area. Top marks all the way around.

This is reminded me more of a boutique hotel than a B&B. Our room was very big and the furnishings are modern and stylishly European (the owners are British). Flat screen tv, leather chairs, that kind of thing.
We really loved that breakfast was delivered to our room. This is one of the reasons we chose it over places where everyone sits together over breakfast as we prefer to be alone. They advertise it as "continental breakfast" but it's really way more than that. You get a tray packed with great food and baked goods. We had hot baked eggs one morning and smoked salmon the other.
The owners are great and provide the perfect combination of friendly helpful chat and advice about where to go and what to see with allowing you your own space and privacy.
The owners live on the first floor and the B&B rooms are all upstairs, so it is easy to be private as you don't feel too much like you're in someone's house as you don't share space with them.
There are plenty of little thoughful touches in the rooms, great bathrobes, toileteries, games, everything for tea and coffee, your own phone line and our favourite thing was the DVD player with a selection (small but very good) of DVDs.
All the little extras took the place to a standard way above our expectations. And it was great value as we had their 3 nights for the price of 2 winter deal which meant our room worked out to $86 a night.
They do housekeeping in the rooms every day, which we've not had before in a B&B. It's one of the cleanest places I've ever been. I peeked under the bed and even though there are wooden floors there wasn't a dust-bunny in sight!
You cross the street and walk down a cute path to a fantastic beach which we walked the long length of each day.
The owners recommended The Shelter restaurant which was so good we ate there twice.
Tofino is beautiful, but a very long way from everywhere (maybe that's why it's so beautiful?!). We drove from Victoria and it took just over five hours and there was a bad section of snow on the road across the island. We travelled in December and the owners told us the conditions ares only like that for a couple of months during the winter. But it's something worth being aware of.
All in all a fantastic, relaxing experience with top quality accommodation and service for a reasonable price.

While the house is new and therefore everything in it is new too, I'm not big on ikea furniture( something I had a a poor college student, but promptly got rid of ASAP). I found the room very sparse and unwelcoming. We stayed in the largest room as that was all that was left. I expected way more for a $200 per night price tag.

Since when do your bring your own bar of soap? Or facecloth? Also the liquid handsoap was empty so we basically had no soap at all!

The breakfast was mediocre at best. We stayed in 4 B&Bs while on the island and this the only one that didn't have a 3 course breakfast. We had fresh croissants and muffins a piece of cheese and roled up lunch ham. Rolled up ham for breakfast? Gross... I sent mine back

This was by far the most expensive place we stayed at while there and we totally got the feeling of " give me your money so I can make my mortgage payment ,and leave me alone". We will not return.

Response from HarveyHouse, Owner/Operators at Chesterman Hideaway
Responded Aug 13, 2007
We remember the people who wrote the two previous reviews very well. They were two couples travelling together, so their comments can not be taken as two separate experiences. We have thought long and hard about whether to dignify these reviews with a response, but we feel so personally hurt and upset by these comments, as we take such pride in the high standard of accommodation and service we provide, we decided we have no choice but to deal with the points they raise: 1. Ikea furniture: We do have a handful of items all of which are clearly visible on our website. We are not ashamed of the few items we have which we selected carefully and believe are of good quality and in-keeping with the style of our B&B. 2. “Sparse and unwelcoming”: We simply know of no one who would agree with this opinion. All of our suites, but particularly The Turret Suite in which those guests were staying, always illicit "oooo"s and "aaaaaaaah"s from people when they walk in. One peek at our website will tell you why. 3. Price: We challenge anyone to find a room of comparable quality, facilities, size and location in Tofino for less than $200 per night during the summer. 4. Soap: We have had only one other guest request bar soap (which we happily provided for that guest) so presumably most other people do, indeed, travel with their own soap/shower gel, as do we, as we find hotel bar soap is generally pretty horrible. We have put considerable time and effort since we opened into trying to source toiletries of a quality we feel happy to provide in our rooms and are now very happy to say we have reached a deal with Neutrogena. So, from around a week from now, each of our bathrooms will come complete with a set of Neutrogena shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and lotion. As for hand-soap - although full, the pump dispenser in this guest’s room had become blocked, hence why they may have presumed it was empty. We unblocked the pump and fixed the problem as soon as we were aware of it, unfortunately that was not until their check-out. 5. Facecloths: We do not, and will not be providing these. We personally feel they are unhygienic. We’ve noticed that many people do, in fact, bring their own with them as, presumably, they feel as we do that they are such personal items few people would wish to use one which had been used by many different people before them. 6. Breakfast: Our website clearly states (on four separate pages) that we provide a continental breakfast delivered to your room. Under no circumstances is anyone led to believe they will be sitting around our kitchen table while being served a multi-course, cooked breakfast. These two couples were both vegetarian (something we are always sure to check at time of reservation) so we most definitely did not serve ham to either of them. However, as far as we are aware, ham is a very common constituent of a continental breakfast and not a "gross" inclusion. Neither of these couples "sent back" anything, they merely left on their tray anything they chose not to eat. For sake of clarity each of our continental breakfast trays consists of three elements: 1. Savoury items - e.g. smoked salmon, ham, a variety of cheeses or pates with either freshly, home-baked, bread rolls or croissants 2. Sweet freshly baked goods - e.g. a variety of muffins or cinnamon rolls 3. Fruit - a large bowl of fresh exotic fruit e.g. pineapple, mango, kiwi. 7. "Give me your money and leave me alone": We are always delighted to help all our guests in any way we can. We adore Tofino (indeed we moved half way around the world to live here because we fell so deeply in love with it) and we seek to share that passion with all our guests and it is our goal that they go away feeling as we do about this beautiful part of the world. We spent considerable time with these guests booking restaurants for them and explaining all the details of the whale and bear watching trips provided locally and eventually making their reservations for them - which they then cancelled shortly after. No amount of help or information is useful to people who are just not interested in the amazing experiences and opportunities that our unique little town has to offer. We find the comment about our personal financial situation deeply offensive - these people have no idea whether or not we have a mortgage. 8. Weather: How we wish this was something we could control! At check-in these guests were joking that they would probably still be chilly as they were from India and so even a hot day in Tofino is pretty cold for them. And indeed the fireplace was used each day in one of the rooms - we know this as each time we went in to clean it had been left on. So we were very surprised when they asked us for a fan. Unfortunately we do not actually possess a fan and so were unable to provide that particular facility. Anyone familiar with the climate in Tofino would be aware that it is not a commonly owned (or requested) household item in this area. We do, however, possess a multitude of umbrellas. We were honestly shocked to read these scathing reviews as at check-out these four people all told us how much they had enjoyed their stay. I hope this response promotes a realization that we are not a faceless chain hotel, but that anyone who stays with us is a guest in our home – a home in which we take great pride – and we can not allow such unfair, unreasonable and personal comments to go uncorrected. However, we are delighted that they did appreciate our, undeniably, high standards of cleanliness. Chris and Nicky Hoskins

We went to Tofino for our Honey Moon. We spent 2 days at the Wickaninish and then 2 days at Harvey House.
We had a great experience.
The house is brand new and the decoration is really european and fit perfectly into the "ocean/nature" atmosphere.
I have to say that the breakfast were amazing. Everyhting was so fresh and home made.
In few words I recomand this b&b to everyone !!
Jerome from Montreal.

I stayed at the Harvey House recently on a vacation to Vancouver Island. My experience at this B&B was one of the best I've had. Upon arrival the hosts were friendly and accommodating, recommending great local restaurants and sight-seeing options. The room was warm and comfortable, and the soaker tub in the bathroom of the "Turret Suite" was a fantastic retreat, allowing you the opportunity to relax with a view of the rainforest. A quick 3 minute walk took you to Chesterman Beach, which was a spectacular sight and made the location ideal. Fresh baked goodies were available for breakfast in the room every day, and a quick drive down the road brought you to many other great eating options. The hosts have set up a movie library with DVD players in every room, which was a fun way to wind down in the evening in the big comfy bed. Even though it rained for most of my stay, the B&B offered a beautiful view of the forest and a relaxing vacation that was not dampened by the weather. The rain storms on the ocean were specatular! All in all, this was a fantastic experience, which I would highly recommend to anyone in the Tofino area.

After a two week holiday travelling from Calgary over the Rockies, we arrived here feeling pretty tired (don't underestimate the drive over from the ferry)...but we immediately relaxed when we saw the quality of our room in this B&B, superbly presented by the welcoming hosts Chris and Nicky. The turret room is practically a suite, with dining area for breafast, huge bed and massive bathroom - all presented in a modern minimalist style - just how we like it! (If you are looking for chinz then don't go here).
Chris made us feel very much at home, suggesting fantastic restaurants (we loved Shelter) and booked tables for us each night. Also sorted out sea kayaking - which is well recommended. A short stroll takes you right onto Chesterman beach which has to be seen.
Many thanks Chris, we loved every minute of our stay and would have no hesitaion in recommending Harvey House. Check out the website, it is everything they claim and more.

We recently spent 2 nights at the Harvey House and are very pleased to report that this B+B lives up to it's number one ranking. We stayed in the Turret Suite which was immaculately clean, beautifully furnished and with a cosy gas fireplace. On our first morning we were served delicious croissants (right out of the oven), fresh fruit, muffins, cured meats and cheese (European style) along with coffee and orange juice. For the second day, breakfast was a delicious omelet, fresh baked buns, more fresh fruit and orange juice. The food was wonderful. The location of the Harvey House across the street from Chesterman Beach was also excellent as it was only a 5 minute walk to the beach. Perhaps the best thing we can say and what underlies everything else was the warmth and helpfulness of our hosts Chris and Nicky who were amazingly attentive and gave us great recommendations for local attractions and restaurants. We recommend Harvey House highly without any hesitation. A wonderful place to get away from it all.

We spent 3 nights at Harvey House and had a wonderful experience. The room was well-appointed, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The location was great, close to town and less than a 5 minute walk to the beach. The surroundings were peaceful and the rainforest setting beautiful. But the best part of the experience was the service provided by Nicky and Chris, who were warm, welcoming and went out of their way to make our stay so nice. And the breakfasts....oh, the breakfasts! Absolutely delicious and we looked forward to seeing what was on the menu every morning. We could not have asked for a better place to stay and we'll definitely be going back!

The rooms are large, light, quiet, and spacious, and the breakfasts are delicious. The hosts are incredibly personable, they helped us with several specific requests without batting an eyelid. Plus their attention to detail was superb. The location across from North Chesterman Beach is hard to beat. Definitely worth the value.

Hello. We are an adults-only B&B. We are so sorry we are unable to accommodate you this summer.

If you can rent a bike go for it, but I wouldn't walk. The walk is quite long and by the highway (so not exactly scenic). It also means you'll be spending a lot of time walking and if it's later at night it's not all that well lit. have fun!
