The hotel's neighborhood (Hastings and Main) is notorious for certain illegal activities. These activities occur frequently in and around this hotel.
I greatly feared for my safety in and around this hotel.
The manager is, shall I say, tightly wound. The lobby is covered with notices that the management can enter your room at any time without notice. The rooms are tiny with little more than room for a bed and a crummy little shelf with a broken tv.
Now imagine a place ten times worse than this, and you'll have an accurate description of the Hazelwood! It's a slum!
NASTY SURPRISE - they wouldn't let me in and through the voicecom said they'd changed their mind and weren't renting to me - no explanation, just a 'get lost'. Was it because I travel with a backpack? was it because I have an expensive folding bike, which they might have thought stolen??? I can't read their paranoid mind. Whatever it was, I was rudely turned away and just left standing there in dangerous downtown eastside with all my luggage. Luckily I still hadn't checked out of my arrival hotel; so I went back there. But their treatment of me was APPALLING and RUDE. There's a difference between keeping addicts out and keeping bona fide travellers/ students out who you previously had made an agreement with. I find it disgusting how they left me standing in the rain with my luggage and simply refused to speak or explain - except through impersonal and barely audible voicecom to 'go away', which I did after realizing the incredible fact of being treated like a bum, which I definitely am not. Don't trust them on their word - they break it.
For a student or budget traveler, it is difficult to find affordable accomodation in Vancouver's overpriced housing market. Indeed I arrived around the back to school period where it is virtually impossible to find a reasonably priced room, especially if you are male as rooms in Vancouver seem to be rented out exclusively to female students. Hazelwood was a convenient alternative, very affordable and conveniently located near downtown, its only 10 minutes by bus to the Harborfront and only 2 min walk to the scenic China town. Even though neighbourhood looks scary and yucky with its junkies and zombies, it really is not that dangerous because the police patrols very frequently and people who struggle walking erect arenot likely to attack you.
Possibly passable if you were eyesight impaired (blind) and had no sense of smell.
Why would a dump like this even make it on to your review board?
But then, if all you needed was a place to shoot up, try here.........
