West End
A hodgepodge of landscapes, the West End combines verdant gardens and blocky modern architecture, with Victorian bits and Edwardian bobs in between. It is a paradise for takeout food, take-away coffee, and perhaps incongruously, some of Vancouver's most languid lines of beachfront. English Bay and Sunset Beach invite swimmers, strollers, and picnic-lovers to take in dusk settling over the water, or to jog along with the sunrise, offering breathtaking views at any time of day. The West End merges together so many looks and flavors probably because it functions a hub: its the leafy pit-stop between nightlife and entertainment venues along Davie Street, and the shopping paradise that is Robson Street, offering visitors beautiful parkland to rest on, and quick, easy food to re-fuel with in between ventures.

Competitive rates consistent with the offer and a quaint change from corporate hotels. The plumbing upgrade should fix dated, cold, bathrooms. The menu needs attention; speciality ‘Sylvia’s Pot Pie’ (fish) is reliable, the chicken wings and oatmeal resemble gunk used by plumbers.

We had an overnight stay to celebrate a birthday. The service was excellent, our room was lovely, and we were impressed by the attentiveness of the staff. We brought our dog and were delighted to see how pet-friendly the hotel is. We had a very good dinner, and both food and se

I'm looking at a black and white postcard of 6 lifeguards circa 1936, standing in a beefcake line in front of the Sylvia! This hotel is part of Vancouver's heritage, and now its part of every trip we take to the big city. What stands out most in my mind? The staff are wonde

The Sylvia has been a fixture of Vancouver's West End for a century, and I last visited it (as a child) in the 1950s. The location is unbeatable, right on the beach in English Bay and in a quiet area, though there are lots of neighbourhood restaurants and shops on Denman Avenue

I booked the Sylvia hotel for its location too. I liked being just across the beach ( English Bay ) and the little shops/ cafes eg Starbucks / Tim Hortons / Burger King / 24 hour mary around it .

I also like heritage buildings. But perhaps I had the romanticised idea of an upd

I’m interested to see an earlier answer regarding rooms without a view. We booked in January and booked for a higher priced room but were allocated a room facing the back wall of the restaurant , so how early do you have to book to get a sea view?
Sorry, did not see the question until just now. hmmm. In answer to the question, a friend of ours has stayed there on a number of occasions and has asked for a room on the older side of the hotel. He's been pretty lucky at getting one with a view every time.

parking for the restaurant?
There is ample parking under the hotel and on the street. Paid parking is in effect on most of street parking but there are free spots on the adjacent streets but very difficult to find as most are reserved for residents with permits!

We are staying at the Sylvia for 1 night. What is the cheapest way to get there as we won’t have a car. Does the sky train leave right from the airport and get close to the hotel? How much would it cost for 4?
with 4 people its best value to take a taxi from the airport directly to the hotel. It will cost you about $35 which is very good for 4. Its fast, comfortable and simple. You can take sky train but it does not take you very close to the hotel so you have to transfer to a bus which is too much trouble with luggage. I am not sure how much the sky train and bus would cost but likely similar for 4 persons.
