I've stayed here for at least 20 years. The biggest failure of the renovations is the room ventilation. As I and others have noted, there is no air in the rooms and when a room is full even with the small window full on open it is very stuffy and hot. The other problem was noise. Door noise, people noise after 10. For several nights there was a loud group of (I was told) French visitors partying close to Burnaby street - from the hostel, I suppose as the clerk knew who they were. This has to stop. I was in a room on the very opposite end of Burnaby and could hear them screaming and shouting way past 10. I agree with a former traveler who noted the lack of privacy in the shower stalls what with a gap in the partition. Also only two showers were working; the third was out of service the whole week I was there due to 'tiling and grouting' - does it take a week to do this?

This hostel was alright but I wouldn‘t recommend it to others.
The dorm rooms did the job, there was a sink next to the door which I liked. However, I couldn’t properly charge my phone and powerbank because the socket didn’t provide enough power…

Also, the showers in the bathroom didn‘t properly work. Especially in the evening, there was little to no water coming out of the shower - the water that came out was in fact cold. When I told a guy who worked there, he just shrugged and told me to shower at another time.
I didn‘t like the kitchen and living room area either. I just found the light too bright, there were no windows and it was generally not a nice, cozy place to stay.
The area was alright and very close to the beach.
Also, the hostel hosted different activities. I took part in a free yoga class on the terrace which was fun and made it easy to get in touch with other travellers.
If you’re travelling with friends this hostel could be ask alright option. However, as a female solo traveller this place made me feel very isolated and I was happy to leave.

The hostel is still undergoing renovation when we stayed there in June. We have tried out the 4-bed room (3rd floor) and the private double room (2nd floor).

Location of the hostel is good, in a quiet spot but closed to Davie Street, where there are a lot of eateries, supermarket, pharmacy and convenience stores. There is also Bus 6 going to Downtown and passing by Canada Line's Yaletown- Roundhouse Station.

There are elevators in the hostel and we do not need to carry our luggage up the stairs.

The 4-bed room on the 3rd floor is OK.

The private room on the 2nd floor might need some further improvement.
1. Loud noises when doors are closed, maybe the automatic door closers need to be adjusted.
2. There is only one bathroom (toilet+shower) each for male and female on the 2nd floor, which is inadequate during the peak hours
3. There is lack of privacy in the bathroom, toilet and shower are next to each other but the panels separating them have gaps
4. Hot water supply in the shower is unstable, the water is sometimes cold or lukewarm.

I am sure small problems will be ironed out after the renovations.

In general it's a very clean and hygienic hostel which is located in a pretty calm environment near the beach.
But in the evenings and especially nights the rooms are wayyyyy too hot. Breathing and sleeping was very hard and I was always drained in sweat.
Also the wifi is not really working and the bottom beds are uncomfortable because you can't sit properly.

Additionally a big no-go for me was that when I booked the hostel (on hostelworld.com) they said there would be free breakfast but there wasn’t. If I would have known that I would have booked a different accommodation.

Definitely avoid this place! This is the worst hostel I've stayed at. I checked out within an hour of checking in to this hostel. On their conditions, it states that they will only charge deposit in the event of a cancellation but they instead charged me for all 3 nights. The staff at the front was very rude to me and basically ignoring me when I raised my concerns. In addition to that, I emailed management and they ignored my email.

I have stayed here many times and I am so disappointed in the way this hostel has gone downhill. There is open drinking allowed in all common areas. All night parties can be heard on different floors in rooms and in common areas. One of the nights a couple got into an argument that lasted over an hour and was heard from floors above and below. I was seriously scared to leave my room. There was no security and no cameras on the floors. I was there for three nights and left completely exhausted. The bed was lumpy and hard. Sagging in many different spot. Hi hosteling should look at pulling out their name from this one.

This is a thoroughly decent place to rest your head whilst staying in vancouver. The location is excellent and our room (double en-suit) was as good as many hotels i have stayed in over the years. the staff were friendly and there is a multitude of bars and eateries within a stones throw of the hostel. the only downside was a little noise from the pub downstairs but then that shouldn't keep you awake if you have had a few beers and a decent meal having explored the city all day

I would reccommend this hostel to anyone who doesnt want to go out and get drunk every night.
The other hostels in Vancouver, from my experience, seemed to be in noisy, less desirable areas (except for Jericho beach which is miles away from anything).
This hostel is in a great location - its easy to walk to all the big attractions, the sea wall is about 2 minutes away and the next street over is really lively and has loads of cheap cafes and shops.

The hostel itself is quite quiet and very secure. there is a games room, a 'library', a tv room and a fully equipped kitchen. the breakfast was a lot nicer than in most hostels i stayed in.

The rooms aren't huge but theres adequate space (and a sink which is always useful).

I would reccommend this hostel to anyone who's travelling and wants to see a bit of Vancouver. It was fully booked the whole time i was there so its probably better to book in advance.

Not at all what we expected. The room was dirty. The bedding had hair in it. We almost slept in our vehicle but instead put towels down on the bedding. There was holes and yellow stains on the backside of the upper bunk bed. The bathroom was not cleaned and smelled. We ended up going to the nearby Starbucks instead to use the washroom. Would not recommend or stay there again.

I was there for meetings with work for the week and then decided to stay for a 3 night weekend to tour the city- the accomodation here was better then my hotel!!!

Check in - staff were friendly and great! There was one agent the 2nd day that spoke in one word sentences (was like pulling teeth when asking simoke questions) and was quite rude in her quiet way but the other staff totally made up for it!

Room - I stayed in a 4 person dorm room and it was clean and the locker was big enough to hold a large suitcase. The bedding smelled fresh and the mattress was VERY comfortable! All my roomies snored and/or talked in their sleep in foreign tongues! But hey that's life. People that complain about nioisy sleepers when they stay in a hostel need to realize that this is what happens - and have no right to complain about it.

Washrooms - they were cleaned once a say (from what I saw) and are what you expect for a public washroom/shower room. I had no issues as the toilet paper was always stocked!

Dining Room - the kitchen/dining room was large and a great place to sit and relax. There was always music playing and the wi-fi worked without a hitch. The kitchen was huge and with alot of fridge space.

Other rooms - I only watched tv one day and the room was clean and comfortable. I didn't check out the games room, but it seemed to be vacant the few times I passed by.

Ambiance - there was everyone from families with young children to seniors staying here and everyone was friendly. This is a very happy place!

LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION! - The neighbourhood was not what you would expect for a hostel. There isn't a homeless person or street walker in sight! It is only a short walk to buses and just a few blocks to the ferry that takes you to Granville Island and the beach. Yet with all this gretness you are still right downtown and only a walk to everything. I was very impressed!

I would stay here again in a flash! I am a 29 year old business professional and it did not "cramp my style". I was looking for a cheap place to sleep at night as I knew that my days would be spent out and not in my room. I might splurge and get a private room next time though, as it would be nice to not to be forced to learn a foreign language from sleep talkers! LOL!

I'm glad you enjoyed your stay! Most people find that when they stay at hostels more they get more used to the sound of others in their room - and we've always got free earplugs at the desk if that will help! As far as the snippy desk clerk goes, if you had a moment to contact me at the hostel, I would like to hear more about that. It's certainly not the norm here! Alan Manager, HI-VDT
