Stayed here for 4 nights and it was not a good experience. Separated from my friend who was on the same booking when we got there and staff were not willing to work around this. The dorm had no plugs near the beds and the one that was in the same dorm didn't work well, any plug you put into the wall it just fell out. plugs available in communal areas but these were always busy. 6 sockets available in the bathroom but only 1 works. Bathroom was full of flies. Only 1 big light in the whole dormitory therefore if 1 person wants the light on/off then everyone is affected. Personal lighting and a plug by beds is recommended for vast improvement. Kitchen was spacious but not the cleanest and fridges always full to the brim so unable to use it half the time. Stayed in other HI hostels in Canada for similar prices and these were vastly better than this one. Big parking lot available out front but not free. If free parking is required you have to park further down the road. There are easy fixes this place could make to improve the experience.

Tiny room sold as a family room. No space for luggage on the floor. The adjoining 'facilities' consisted of a single shower and toilet. On the third night of our stay they rented the other family room to a family of five. The kitchen has room for 4 people. The beds are terrible. Metal frames, creaking and squeaking with even the smallest movement. Mattress was appalling - my wife and I had a bad back after the first of the three nights. Springs clearly visible through the fabric and you could feel each spring poking you lying down. Very expensive. We paid almost 800 Canadian dollars for a three night stay. Complete rip off. The management clearly don't care about the state of the rooms as they must think their business is all transient and non repeat and they may have a point. Do yourself a favour and book a much, much nicer place a few km further out of Vancouver for less money. Never again!

The good: 1. Very very very friendly and extremely helpful, patient and knowledgeable front desk. I've stayed in so many hostels around the world and I don't think I've ever had such an amazing consistent experience. They have great day trips, movie nights, nice things planned for the visitors. 2. The beds are comfy, have exhaustive charging points and I love how the provided cupboards have lock option.... provides great security for your belongings 3. Lovely area - the beach is a stone's throw away and it's just amazing to unwind and watch sunset after a tiring long day. 4. Hostel and neighbourhood truly feels amazing, ambient, peaceful and most importantly- safe. I saw single women hanging out past sunset by the beach by themselves (which is like 10pm in the summer!) without fear of any dodgy characters around. Such a blessing in today's world. I don't even think downtown Van feels this safe! 5. Nice building with history. It has a certain old world charm (of course, with mod-cons). 6. Ample ample ample parking place for those driving in. No parking by the side roads or anything.. just remember there's a CAD 14 fee per night. The not-so-good: Where to begin?! The efficiency and "soft product" experience ruins an otherwise solid "hard product" experience. 1. Extremely badly managed bathrooms - first off, they choose to do their daily cleaning during the hours of 9a-10a which is kind of when the hostel is at its busiest. One of the 2 big men's was being cleaned at the time, we were directed to the other one except that the shower area in that bathroom has been cordoned off. Result - loads of us stuck with towels in hand. I heard everything about how folks here are working on a voluntary basis blah blah...honestly it's a lame excuse. Try getting the volunteers or pay someone to actually clean it during off peak hours (like a 12p/1p) which is when most hostels clean up 2. No toilet paper in some of the toilets right after the cleaners left! I ran behind one of them to remind them and they said they forgot. How can you not stock toilet paper in a toilet? When I told the reception, I was told "it happens". LOL! 3. Poor wifi all over except in the noisiest part of the building: the reception. 4. Poor kitchen amenities - for example: this is the first hostel where there was a made queue for the coffee cups! Yes.... for such a large kitchen, they had less than a dozen. It was kind of sad seeing folks queueing up by the sink just to wait for someone else to wash their coffee up so we could grab it. Coffee mugs don't cost a lot at Ikea guys....buy some more! I wish I'd brought my own cups. 5. I had my own car but I heard from others that the public transport options were limited (although, in all fairness, it is called out clearly on the HI website) 6. I'm listing this as #6 even though it's not important to me personally: not the kind of hostel to socialise. It's so big a lot of people kept to themselves.

Surprisingly ok! I booked a 14 female dorm and though, omg, what did i sign for. But i turned out it was really nice, since there are 4 beds separations. And compared to some newer hostels, here there actually is space! And the room is not a little tiny hole with zero place to move (case in many other hi hostels). The kitchen is a bit crowded and half of the stives were out of order, but other then that i was really surprised how everything worked! And the dorm room was really silent. If you don't mind a bit of old building character, and to be honest a bit dirty floors and showers, everything else is worth it.

Fantastic location right by the beach! Easy, short walk to the bus stop for the #4, #44, or #84 into other parts of Vancouver and beyond. I loved the rural, laid back feel of the area. I enjoyed meeting other travelers in the very big common kitchen. Doors to the dorm rooms close loudly, but the four-night stay was well worth it.

The worst hostel of my trip! Having just come from HI Jasper, which was fantastic, this place is a dump. No free towels, which all the other HI places have had. The dorms and bathrooms are just large and “historic”, they seemed fine. But the kitchen was dirty and messy, with the fridges and food storage areas totally full (so I had to jam my food in the fridge and keep cupboard stuff in the dorm). It’s probably fine if you don’t want to cook but this place isn’t for me. I was supposed to be coming back again but have cancelled and booked elsewhere.

To flee... infamous staff, scammers, hostel very poorly located. This is currently my worst experience. I strongly advise against any stay at Hi Vancouver Jericho Beach. Leave you intimidated by their prices, which seem advantageous. You will finally pay more than in a hotel located in the center of the City.

HI hostels are usually quite good. No frills, but guaranteed to meet basic standards of quality of accommodation, cleanliness etc. The Jericho Beach location is by far the worst I've experienced and I've been to HI properties across North America and Europe. It's in a terrible location, remote and difficult to access by transit, the dorms are a cross between a jail cell and a military barracks and (unlike every other HI location I've stayed in) lack basic amenities like electrical outlets and lighting, both the dorms and washrooms are reprehensibly filthy (my bed sheets are stained and sprinkled with grit like they were dragged through the parking lot before being used to make the bed) and, finally, the hostel is poorly run with the front desk being in a state of total chaos. I really enjoy staying in hostels and have done so around the world. My experience here is so traumatic that not only will I never come back I think I'm done with HI forever. Don't make the same mistake I did by having faith in these people.

I stayed in the hostel for a few weeks last summer and again for 3 weeks this summer. My experience was very different on each occasion. In summer 2020, I had a pleasant experience and found the hostel to be quiet and tidy, but lacking atmosphere. However, I loved the location near the beach and this was why I chose to stay here again this summer. On returning to the hostel I found it much busier which was to be expected. However, my main reason for this review is how drastically the cleaning standards had dropped from the summer of 2020 to 2021. I checked into my dorm and there was balls of fluff, food scraps and litter under my bed. Also, the floor was sandy with dirty marks and there was no-one staying in the opposite bed, so it was not their mess either. A few days into my stay, I changed beds as I had previously been next to the door which are very loud in this hostel. I found a similar situation under the next bed too. On my first evening there was an altercation with 2 guys in my dorm, I thought it was going to end in a fight and staff had to get involved. One of the guys said he had been staying in the hostel for a year which put me under the impression he may have been working there and his behaviour was appalling. He then came in and out of the door throughout the night turning the lights on and off stating he had lost his phone. This could have happened in any hostel, however this added to my first impression of my 2nd stay and left me with terrible sleep on my first night. On my first time in the bathroom, I was in shock of how dirty they were. The urinals absolutely stunk and they all had mouldy fresher pads in the bottom which looked like they haven’t been changed in months. One of the urinals was blocked and about to overflow as there was so much grime in the bottom. There was toilet paper all over the floor and wobbly dirty toilet seats. The shower floors were incredibly dirty and there had been a black hair ball in the end shower for at least 3 days. There was a dirty mark on the shower wall which I used for the majority of my stay and it wasn’t wiped in my entire visit of 3 weeks. Still in a covid world these standards of hygiene are appalling. On numerous occasions, the bins (crash cans) around the hostel had not being emptied for a few days. The bin outside the entrance of the hostel was full for 4 days and had started overflowing. I had also seen a guest picking up some of the trash that had fallen out and putting it in a different bin. The bench area outside the front entrance is also covered in cigarette butts and doesn’t look liked its had a sweep ever. This is a terrible first impression for guests arriving. There is a small white table in the TV room that is very popular with people that want to work quietly on their laptops or study. The table has been situated right in front of the TV for my entire stay making me feel very uncomfortable on many occasions to go in and watch TV. There is obviously a need for desk at the hostel but this should be situated somewhere else, so other people can comfortably watch tv in the ‘TV Room’. One day the kitchen was closed for cleaning at 9:30am, when it was full of people cooking and using the fridges, sinks, hobs and toasters (and trying to use the kettle but is wasn’t working anyway). Without any warning one of the staff members put the chains across when people were literally half way through cooking. I was in shock and asked the staff member if this was a good time, she said ‘well it wasn’t done earlier so I’m going to do it now’. This really bothered me as there was no warning and it was crazy timing. My breakfast was ruined as I couldn’t get to the fridges to get the rest of my things. I tracked down the Manager and asked if this was acceptable? He didn’t look bothered and just stated ‘the hostel is at full capacity at the moment and this needs doing’….. at 9:30am when the kitchen is busy and everyone is making breakfast? Continuing with the kitchen: 2 out of 3 sinks make an incredibly loud noise when you use them which is extremely frustrating. There are no normal, adult, ceramic bowls for guests to use. They have some small coloured plastic bowls which look like they should be used for baby food. There is also a maximum of 4 mugs I have seen in total in the hostel. There is barely ever one available in the morning. It is fair to say I was frustrated on my 2nd visit and will not be staying again until standards have improved. The hostel needs some serious TLC. Everywhere, especially the bathrooms need a deep clean, some bleach, air freshers and mopping is needed. The mouldy urinals need attention straight away. The kitchen needs restocking with new mugs, bowls, pans and better organisation of the cutlery. The tv room need some new couches and less chairs so it doesn’t look like a hospital waiting room. This hostel has some serious potential. It is a stunning building with lots of space in a unique location but it definitely needs better management and some money spending to bring it back to life. I hope you will take this feedback seriously and consider some of the improvement that need to be made.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am truly disappointed that our cleanliness standards dropped while you were here, and we will certainly be doing all we can next season to consistently keep those standards up and meet your expectations. With the pandemic continuing on, we expected another quiet summer and were surprised by how busy it got at some points. During those stretches our smaller than ideal housekeeping team really struggled to keep up and I'm sorry to say that some areas lagged. I do hope we'll get another chance to welcome you back to a cleaner and better hostel in all the ways which you've identified. I appreciate that you put a lot of thought into your feedback and welcome you to contact me directly so we can address any issues right away next time at janice.kingsley@hihostels.ca. Best regards, Janice Kingsley

Stayed 3 nights with my family and while it wasn’t the best, it was somewhere to sleep. Clean rooms, clean bathrooms, but kitchen cleanliness was poor. People left dirty dishes out, didn’t wipe counters and the fridge was filled with many unlabelled items. That said, the kitchen was still very well stocked and usable. If I was a solo traveller and did not have a private room this would have not been ideal. The room lacked hostel necessities like privacy curtains and individual lights and charging ports.

I'm sorry to hear you found a mess in the kitchen even if the rooms and bathrooms were clean. I agree, no one likes to see dirty dishes left out. Although our basic dorms have limited electricity, we are gradually upgrading them. The dorm rooms that have been fully renovated have outlets and lights at each bunk, and additional privacy walls between each set of bunks. For next time I think those rooms will be more what you were looking for. Thank you for your feedback and happy travels!
