Detailed Reviews

We booked 3 nights accommodation from the UK. At the time (this has now changed) the information said that the Manor Guesthouse had free on street parking. We therefore rolled up in our hire car to discover that the on street parking was for permit holders or for 2 hours during the day only. There were 4 guest parking spaces round the back, but these were all full. The staff did not have very good English, so we could not ask them for alternatives. We spent our 1st evening trying to find a car park close by that we could use. Fortunately, half way through the evening, someone went out in their car, so we took their parking spot. However, during the other 2 nights of our stay there was a free space.
One reviewer said that there were 8 rooms. I actually think that there were about 15 rooms and ours was the dingiest of the lot!
However there was 1 huge benefit to our room. We were down in the basement (so more limited natural light) in room G2B. There was 1 other room in the basement, room G2A, and these 2 rooms formed a little self contained flat (apartment) that would be great for families. The basement was next to the car parking spaces, had its own (tatty) table and chairs outside, had its own kitchen (the oven didnt work), bathroom, high dining table with bar stools and sofa bed (which presumably could be used if there were 6 of you instead of 4).
G2A had a larger bed and TV than G2B, but our 5 ft bed was still very comfortable. The headboard was not fixed to the bed though so it banged against the wall every time we moved. My husband wedged it with a pair of his socks and this sorted the problem.
There were free hot drinks and biscuits on the front verandah, numerous outside seats, a book depository and laundry facilities in the basement. Everything was tired, but clean.
This Guesthouse is close to the metro and it is only 3 or 4 stops into central Vancouver, but as it is on a residential side street, it is very quiet. A Safeway and numerous eateries are just around the corner. The location is therefore ideal.
NB I have added photos of rooms G2A, G2B and the dining table and chairs, so you can see what I am talking about.

We were ultimately satisfied with our stay at the Manor Guest House, but I am not absolutely certain if I would book there again.
On the positive side, the breakfasts were fantastic. There was a nice slection and variey each of the three mornings we were there. Breakfast did not begin until 8:30 however. we usually arrived in the kitchen a few minutes prior and everything was ready - no waiting. ANd there is a bit of outdoor space at the front garden which was very nice to sit in on a summer afternoon. It apparently is a labor of love and it shows - even more so considering the lack of rain in Vancouver this season.
.Frankly, these were the only experiences that put a true smile ion my face.
When our party of three first arrived, we were greeted by Brenda, the owner. She was friendly and let us know that we were to stay in the building located next door. She guided us to the basement "garden" unit - which was not the accommodations that we booked..(Two rooms with private baths) She went on to explain Manor Houses' involvement with the nearby hospital and that there were individuuals going through a recuperative process that was taken longer than expected and that they were still occupying our rooms. Of course we understood the predicament and did not expect that they would be forced to vacate the rooms so decided we would make the best of it.
As a resident of a major city full of "garden" units, we are used to these types of accommodations however this one had the character and charm of a basement. It felt like the ugly stepchild of the main house. Although I did not see the rooms above grade, I would hiope that they are far superior. There was nothing special about the 2 BR one bath. The beds were uncomfotable, there was no place to hang clothes within the bedrooms (armoires in the main "living" room and these bedrooms are intended to be let separately), the toilet ran continuously, we could hear water and effulent loudly trace through the the waste piping in the ceiling above the bedrooms, the living room was dark on a sunny day, the furniture was worn and unattractive and there was a faint musty smell throughout the unit. The bathroom was OK, except for the toilet matter and the tile looked new. I would expect that if you are going to rent a basement unit, you would create an oasis that folks would actually like to stay in.It is certainly in need of a remodel.
In short, I did express my disappointment and satisfaction to the management at the close of our stay. To their credit they were accommodating to a point that was reasonable. I hope appreciated my constructive criticisms.. .

We stayed here on the day we arrived in Vancouver because we were unable to book our preferred B&B for this particular night. It is a $30 taxi ride from the airport.
We were greeted by a young Czech student who seemed to have a holiday job there. The room had lots of antiques but was dull and not particularly ‘uplifting’. We walked to down town past City Hall and over Cambie Bridge [45 minutes] which gave us a good feel for the city centre.
We had a comfortable night and the next day Dave – a really friendly guy – presided over a good standard breakfast of various cereals, breads, omelette etc.
This B&B seemed OK at the time but as we experienced other B&Bs on our trip though Canada, this B&B continued to slip down the rating chart.
It was the joint most expensive B&B on our trip [with one in Banff] and when we later found the exceptional value and experience to be had at another B&B in Vancouver for $40 per night less, we could not justify recommending Manor House as it was poor value for money.

This was very poor accommodation, even the bed sheets were not ironed. Very funny smell from the floorboards which woke me in the night. No home comforts what so ever. It should also be noted that you do not stay at the address given on Booking.com, you stay at a house 3 or 4 doors up the road.
The Owner only wants cash from you for the stay - who carries that much cash around when you have just landed in the country???

My boyfriend and I are from Vancouver but needed a place to stay for the night as our university residence was supposedly locked for prep on the night of Jan 1. We booked through booking.com the "Loft with two double mattresses and shared washroom" for 49.50$
We walked into the manor and opened the front door, creaky and eery. No one was around and we stood awkwardly for a minute or two calling out "hello" with no one there to welcome us. The host or owner or whatever he was (didn't introduce himself to us or tell us what his role was at all) popped out and asked for the booking name then disappeared to get it. It's ironic they advertise "We speak your language!" when we could barely understand what was going on for the first 5 minutes. I am an immigrant and I understand that English is not everyone's first language but I was shocked. We could barely understand each other.
Nevertheless he continued upstairs to show us our "bedroom". As we were halfway through to reaching the second floor there was a stank and strong stench of heated grease flowing throughout to the point where I almost gagged and had to cover my nose. We reached the third floor and saw another tenant cooking in the very small kitchen to where the smell was probably coming from. The host shows us the shared washroom which is in a disgusting and unclean, completely unacceptable state. My boyfriend and I still await to be shown our "loft bedroom" and the host smiles and laughs awkwardly. We take a step back and there is a ladder right beside the kitchen counter with maybe 10 or so steps to an overhead floor maybe 4-5 ft below the ceiling. That is also in the centre of the entire third floor facing the staircase.
Very uneasily, he said this was our "loft" and was not at all surprised at our consequent outrage. Immediately the host offered to be upgraded to a room for another whopping $30. This meant we would be paying $80 to stay in another room in this old house where the service is confusing, dishonest, and frankly very unsettling. Obviously, staying in this "loft" was not an option as everyone would be able to see, hear, and even approach us throughout the night. We would both sleep with no sense of peace.
He kept on repeating he didn't understand while we complained about how there is no way we were staying in this room and overall the house after this surprise. He kept saying "email, email, email" and "no refund" to whatever we said to him. His wife yelled up at him in their language and then they both proceeded to yell to us "email and no refund" for the remained of the time we spent there.
We checked the confirmation email sent by booking.com after booking the loft to see if it ever clarified the state of the "loft". It did but also after booking there is no way to cancel and no way to ever receive your money back so that "considerate" message explaining you'd essentially be sleeping on a total stranger's couch surrounded by other total strangers for $50 was completely useless.
Of course a loft was expected but the level to which was presented towards us was horrendous. I was absolutely not okay with upgrading to another room and paying more towards their ridiculous plot and in fact after the whole ordeal I checked reviews online for the "loft" and EVERY one has upgraded because they had no other option. We decided to stay elsewhere and were lucky to have sorted but we have not (and will not) receive a refund from the manor for not staying there.
I felt extremely insulted and the principles proven by the distasteful actions of the manor have ensured I will never ever recommend this place or head back there ever again.

An employee quoted us the rate for our room when we checked in. When we received the bill upon check-out, we were charged a higher rate for each night. The employee agreed that there had been a mistake but said that the manager was not available and the staff was not authorized to correct the bill. When I tried to correct the problem later with Brenda (the manager), she claimed that we must have been mistaken and refused to make any adjustment to the bill or refund the difference to my credit card. She will probably describe this review as "libelous," but Brenda was not there for the conversation and has no knowledge of what took place, so I do not appreciate her implication that both we and her employee were mistaken or lying, nor do I appreciate her refusal to stand by her employee's representation.
The guest house itself is alright, but I could not possibly recommend it to anyone after the experience we had there, which apparently was not unique. Believe the reviews and stay somewhere else. The house is on a quiet, tree-lined street, not far from downtown Vancouver, but far enough away that you will need some way to get around (car, bicycle rental). The rooms were comfortable but average, and the ones in the main house all have a musty smell. Not very quiet. Breakfasts were average.

We did lots of research to find a special accommodation while vising Vancouver. We decided to stay here because our party of 6 could stay in the "penthouse" and have a view of downtown. We were told we would have 4 beds. We arrived and the rude and harsh owner told us we had been "upgraded" to a house down the street. We went to the house only to find 2 beds and a small pull out couch in musty rooms. My 20 year old brother and I were expected to sleep on a small pull out couch. We are a little too old for that. There were 2 towels for 6 adults. There was a very nice porch, but absolutely no view of downtown. Even though, upon checking in, the owner said we would have a great view of downtown. My mom went to the real B&B which had music blaring through the entire house. She rang the door bell and left a note that we needed some service. 4 hours later, we still hadn't spoken to anyone. We went to the main house again, music blaring, rang the door bell, and knocked to finally talk to the manger. He was very rude and abrasive and said there was nothing he could do for us. He then went to his room and called the owner. We could over hear him saying that he couldn't believe she knowing overbooked the penthouse because the other people wanted it for a week and we only reserved 2 days. When he came back out he was more pleasant He did give my brother and I another room in the main house. Breakfast in the morning was run by a girl who looked like a deer in headlights with the kitchen packed. During breakfast (at 8:30 am), new guests were already given the key to the room I stayed in the night. My belongings were removed before I had even gotten showered and dressed. I had expensive jewelry and my wallet sitting in my room that I thought would be secure. I then had to go the the house down the street to shower in the hall bathroom. The second night we were able to move into the penthouse since the people spending more money had checked out. As the owner has responded multiple times, it is a shame how one person can "have a unique capacity to make life miserable for everyone." With hundreds of other places to stay, I would never stay here again. I cannot imagine how this "business" has kept alive for 15 years with this kind of service.

To begin with, this is NOT a guest house. We never saw the owners, and the "resident manager" was just there to hand the keys (no hello / no welcome) and to collect payment.
The furniture of the unit was in a very bad shape, and some pieces probably came from a dumpster. The bed was smelly, the sheets had holes, stains and we were probably not the first "guests" to use them since the last wash...
The only positive of that place was breakfast, which was quite good. Just too bad there were not enough tables for all the guests to sit (some ended up sitting on the stairs, with their breakfast plate on their knees) and the breakfast room was as dirty as the rest of the place (don't put your elbows on the table, you remain stuck to it).
This place is just a money-making machine, which limits maintenance to a very low minimum and uses very cheap labor (poor girls from South America and Eastern Europe) to maximize profit. My advice: just avoid it.

Response from ManorGuestHouse, Owner at Manor Guest House
Responded Aug 8, 2014
I have been an innkeeper for 22 years and have never seen such a malicious, and potentially libellous review. Whereas we welcome constructive criticism and are always striving to provide our guests with a very positive experience, this review leaves little room for credibility. The guest who wrote it was with us with her family for 5 nights. If these allegations were true would they have stayed as long as they did? And perhaps more to the point, would we be in business? Would we have earned an accredidation from the British Columbia Ministry of Tourism? Perhaps most ironic of all, we were awarded the 2014 Certificate of Excellence from Trip Advisor. I am personally saddened that there are people in the world who feel the need to inflict their misery needlessly on others.

We booked the Manor House on line after talking with the owner. We reserved the Penthouse suite. In this suite we were to have a loft with a queen bed, a private bedroom with a queen, a pullout queen bed, and a king bed in the main sleeping area. With this came a large bathroom, sitting area, kitchen, and roof top veranda...Sounds great hugh?! When we arrived we were told we were "upgraded" to a completely different house about 5 doors down. Our upgrade consisted of two rooms but only had 2 beds and a pullout sleeper. In our group were: my parents who were celebrating their 30th anniversary, my two grown adult siblings, and my husband and I also celebrating our 4th anniversary. Now with 6 adults (2 couples) and 2 grown siblings (one female and one male) the sleeping arrangements did NOT match what we were originally guaranteed. By the way...there were only 4 sets of towels, not six, and NO sheets, pillows, or blankets for the sleeper sofa for my sister and brother. When we went to complain no one answered the door and there was blaring music coming from the office. We went back a few hours later and tried again. We were never given an explanation as to the "upgrade" but eventually found out it was because they double booked the nicer rooftop suite. The owner never got back in touch with us even though the office employee called her to relate our frustration. We also reserved this because it was a bed and breakfast. You can imagine our surprise when our "upgrade" consisted of walking to the original Manor House to sere ourselves breakfast, not actually the "upgraded" house we were moved to. We reserved this place for two nights, the second night our beds were not remade and we once again did not have enough towels. I will say, the office employee, David, "tried" to appease us by offering extra beds to my sister and brother so they didn't have to sleep together and in the same room as my parents but there weren't towels in those rooms and even though we were told we could have the extra rooms for both nights, my sisters things were placed in the hallway at 9:30 in the morning when she was at breakfast because another guest arrived that was supposed to be in the "extra" room. So I guess they had double booked the "extra" room since David had promised us we could have it due to the circumstances. There was never any monetary compensation for us not getting the suite we reserved, nor was there any real concern for our dissatisfaction. I would never recommend this place to other travels given the dishonesty, the lack of basic amenities such as towels and sheets, the double booking, etc. It was a huge disappointment and an unfortunate end to our family vacation.

Closer to a hostel setup. Expect that you're just paying for a place to crash in a hot area of town.
There are several designated parking spaces behind the Manor House. However if these are taken you will have to park on the street.
