Sandman Hotel Vancouver Downtown is lauded for its modern atmosphere and convenient location near Rogers Arena and a host of restaurants, with guests enjoying the modern amenities in some rooms. However, the hotel's service often falls short of expectations, with numerous travelers reporting experiences of dismissiveness and rudeness.
Although the rooms are generally clean, some visitors have encountered issues with unpleasant odors and noisy air conditioning, and many feel that the hotel's offerings do not justify the price, citing outdated facilities and a lack of value.

Detailed Reviews
Mixed reviews. Fabulous check in staff. We chose the Sandman Downtown Vancouver mainly due to location. For that - we were not disappointed! We were able to walk everywhere. However, we also had to do a lot of walking inside the hotel (up and down the stairs) due to the fact that only ONE elevator was operational. Considering it is COVID times and they limit elevator occupancy to just TWO people, the line up for the elevator was frustrating. Fortunately, we are fit and able to handle the stairs, but other guests were not. Additionally, they must be understaffed. We read a posted sign that said, "to protect guest privacy, room service would not be provided and had to be arranged through the front desk if required". We are tidy people, so we felt we'd be fine to sort the room ourselves for the three nights were were staying. However, ONE roll of toilet paper would not suffice for a family of four. When we called down to ask for an additional roll, we were told we had to come to the front desk to pick it up ourselves (another trip down and back up the stairs...). On our final day, when we had all of our bags packed and waiting to board the elevator, a member of the housekeeping staff refused to allow us onto the elevator. Se claimed that she would be boarding next and that the elevator would be going UP, and not DOWN to the lobby. The customers had to wait. Like I said, mixed reviews.

Hello R5063JQsteveh, Thank you for your wonderful review and feedback. While it is fantastic to hear that you were able to enjoy our great location in the heart of downtown Vancouver, we are sorry to see the difficulties that you experienced during your stay with us. For the enhancement of our guest experience, we had begun renovations on our elevator which has caused delays to our guests. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience that this has caused you! The great news is that the renovation has been completed and all of our elevators are back working! If you would be so kind as to provide us further feedback in regards to your stay and the housekeeping team member in question, that would be absolutely wonderful. Please reach out to me at gm_vancouver@sandman.ca and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you again for your stay, and we look forward to hearing from you soon. The location was fairly convenient. The room was clean, spacious and the beds and pillows were very comfortable. I asked for a quiet room and on my 2nd day, they put right in front of my room someone with 2 dogs (I didn't know this hotel accepts dogs) that were barking all day non-stop, 2 days in a row. Luckily another manager (Sid Dhupar) helped me to change to another room and since then my stay was much better. In general, the hotel was Ok, the location despite being central in Downtown was not very close to shops and businesses so for the price one would expect something a bit better.

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
The room we got was pretty shabby (wallpaper peeling, hole in wall) but clean. There were no plugs (usb or otherwise) available beside the beds. Also not much space to put our belongings while staying there. The front desk person who greeted us when we arrived was quite grumpy-seeming, but everyone else we dealt with during our stay was polite and warm. It's not great, but it's clean and well-located.

I usually stay at sandman's in freak with them all over Alberta and British Columbia. I have stayed at this hotel before as well but this city was horrible right from the get-go.
As a business traveller I pick my hotels based on their facilities, in my case I very much enjoy the hot tub to help me relax after a Long Day's Work. I called the hotel the day of the booking, a mere hour before my arrival and confirmed that their pool and hot tub was in fact open and in operation.
Unfortunately upon my arrival I found that the pool and hot tub are closed until the month of March. Clearly this should have been known by the staff and communicated to me when I inquired and booked. However the staff chose to lie to me and tell me one thing when they knew the opposite was true.
Not the end of the world but it was a bad start to what would only be a worse experience.
I was out late that evening entertaining clients and injured my foot. When I arrived at the hotel I asked for a small bag that I could put some ice in. I was advised at this point while they had operating ice machines on three different floors, they were locked as they did not want to disturb other guests.
At the time there were three different individuals at the desk and I offered them $5 to quietly go and get some ice from one of the three available and working ice machines so that I could ice my injured foot.
I was told that I should walk a few blocks on my injured foot and go get my own ice, as they were unwilling to accommodate my request.
In 10 years of traveling on business I have never been to a hotel with such poor guest services and a complete disregard for a customer's safety.
But on the bright side, the 3 front desk employees got to continue their conversation and not have to assist or lift a finger for a guest in need.

Dear Graham S. Thank you for your continued loyalty and for sharing your feedback. We strive to provide exemplary guest service to all our guests during their stay, and we regret to hear that you felt ignored and unappreciated. At the time of your request, our ice machines stopped running as programmed to eliminate noise hence for the quiet enjoyment and sleeping comfort of our guests. We wish to clarify your comments regarding our pool closure as it is temporarily closed less than ten days for our annual preventative maintenance and is clearly communicated through signage posted in common areas including the front desk check in counter. We do apologize if this was not made clear at the time you made your reservation. Please reach out to myself at gm_vancouver@sandman.ca or 604-646-4313 to discuss further or help with any future Sandman reservations. Best regards, Jesse Steele General Manager

Cozy Queens are smaller and completely Dark and quiet with heavy lined dark drapes drawn. The quiet is tremendous given the location in the West End area of downtown; a dense area even in a global sense. The VCC Sandman has a pool and hot tub, and two Bars and Grills: the Sharks Club, which carries lots of sports on its many screens, and Moxie's Grill which is more restaurant like, though both are fully licensed.
Service is pleasant though some might find it off-putting to bear their own luggage. These qualities have been consistent since 1989. Meeting and conference areas of various sizes.

Called in advance to book a pet friendly room we even clarified that we would have our dog who is 60lbs with us they said that was no problem and let us know the pet fee for each night. We arrived and apparently all of the pet friendly rooms are under construction so they debated in front of us whether they should allow us to stay in another room. The room the then put us in is so small I can not even set up my dogs kennel. Also love my view of the disgusting windows. Just checked in and this is my impression.

Dear JillanA2000, Thank you for taking the time to share you review. We have specific rooms for pet friendly rooms in the hotel. Our rooms with 2 beds that are pet friendly are larger with more space in the room. We would be happy to offer a room move by calling the front desk. Please reach out to me directly to welcome you back to the Sandman Hotel to show the quality of service we have to offer. Best regards, Jesse Steele General Manager

+1
I try to be as neutral and unbiased as possible when reviewing anything, but this place is one of the worst properties I have ever stayed at! The room we had was beyond unclean. Dust accumulation that was visible to the naked eye, cheap furniture that was damaged and worn to the point of the particle board it’s made from visibly crumbling, stained sheets, a bathroom that hasn’t been maintained properly (looks like someone gave a toddler a caulking gun and let them go to town with it), peeling wallpaper, and a view from the room of the other side of the hotel’s exterior covered in pigeon crap. Aside from the sanitary/cleaning/maintenance issues, the staff suck. They refused to do a currency exchange for a small amount ($100 USD➡️CAD), despite having it in writing that they do exchange for small amounts. Another note, the main entrance to this hotel is NOT accessible, meaning folks with disabilities must enter through the parking driveway which presents a load of safety concerns for them!
I will never stay at another Sandman property again, and would advise against anyone else staying too!

The location of the hotel is convenient for access downtown Vancouver however the room was not clean, smelled like cigarettes and had dated furniture . The cleanliness is especially concerning during the Pandemic. We had a few nights booked however we opted to check out after one night. There are much better hotels located on the same street/block that have better facilities and rooms at a similar price point.

Where do I start, first room we booked was a cozy queen and didn't think the room we were getting was going to be the size of a closet. Had to upgrade for the king size room which was a nice size. We get into the room and it was hot, checked the ac and turned it to the lowest we could get it at which was set for 19 degrees but it never reached that temperature, we were lucky if it even got to 21.5. The ac never worked properly and slept most nights hot, we weren't told about having to request housekeeping for our stay which is ridiculous. They said there was a piece of paper left on the bed for this which in both rooms we were in didn't have that paper. We requested extra towels and pillows that never showed up and called for a third time in two days to only be told to go to front desk for extra towels. Only had the room cleaned the night before we checked out. For the amount of money we spent for 3 nights we expected better service then that. When taking a shower water was spraying out from the shower head onto the ceiling and over the curtain and all over the floor near the toilet. The water faucet for the tub wasn't properly secured and was crooked. This was one of the worst stays and experiences I've ever had staying in a Sandman hotel. They should be spending the extra money fixing these rooms properly and replacing out dated stuff like the ac unit and shower heads. Oh and for the tv lol whoever mounted the tv should learn to use a level because that thing was crooked as well. I would never go back to that hotel again and I'll pay the extra money at a better hotel next time in Vancouver as they lost business from a returning customer.
