I stayed at this fabulous B&B for 4 nights and it instantly felt like home. The house was beautiful and very well laid out for guests in terms of the amount of separate space available to use in addition to the actual bedroom. Guests had a spacious living/breakfast/computer/TV area, including kitchen with complimentary snacks, drinks, coffee, tea etc available for their use at any time. The actual bedroom suite was a great size, very tasteful and extremely comfortable. The provisions for guests were first rate, from a basket of snacks and a fridge full of drinks to an abundance of fresh fluffy towels and other bathroom amenities, to complimentary wifi, and everything in between that one might want or need. Unobtrusive servicing of the room was offered but for me it was not necessary as my stay was short and the room was so clean, tidy and comfortable anyway. Joanne is an exceptional hostess. She is welcoming, warm and helpful in every possible way. She is also an extraordinary cook - the breakfasts she made were AMAZING! Every day she would tell me what was on the menu for the next morning and my mouth would start to water. The location of the house is very central, walking distance to many places and only relatively short distances by bus or taxi to others. I had a car during my stay and parking on the street was never a problem. I would happily stay at this wonderful place again.

Our 4th visit to Vancouver, every time at a BnB. Our stay was excellent due to Joanne’s non intrusive hospitality and warmth. House on Dunbar is located on a quiet and very charming street close to UBC. Our room, 2010, was clean and very well equipped. 24 hours coffee and snacks in the basement were an added comfort. Would love to stay here again.

We stayed for 2 nights and is was great. Nice owner: warm and friendly but also not too friendly keeping in mind our privacy. The breakfasts were good and sufficient. The location is a bit far from downtown, but we stayed there before so didn't need to be close by. Bike rental is close and you can bike (or walk) through the forests and the really nice neighborhood with beautiful houses and great views on the ocean. Nice and not too crowded.

While booking a place to stay in Vancouver, I discovered that an average middle-class person could not afford a place in the downtown unless one want to stay in that one hostel with poor reviews. Even stranger is the fact that rest of Vancouver (UBC area and south Vancouver) have very limited options for stay. North Vancouver hotels near to Stanley park are not budget friendly either. So only way an average Joe can afford a place in Vancouver is stay miles away from the touristy spots. This is how I chose House on Dunbar B&B.
It is a great leafy neighbourhood and away from the hustle-bustle of the city. Bus 7 is your lifeline to the city, which takes a good part of an hour. The house is ~10 mins walk from the bus stop. We stayed in the UBC room, which has an ensuite. Joanne is very helpful and responsive when you communicate with her re questions prior to your stay. She also has a very helpful guide for all the touristy things to do in Vancouver.
Joanne, the host, is a very sweet host and treats you well. However nice and sweet, she is no hospitality professional. Which means we were not showed around the house and the facilities in the 6 nights we stayed. The cleaning was poor as there were hairs and dust in our freshly "cleaned" room. Ventilation is poor in the B&B (in the basement) and the whole place smells of mould and damp. Your clothes, shoes and bags start to smell of the mould and damp after the stay. Although she is a nice friendly lady, her cooking is not the best. The breakfast we got served - pancakes did not taste nice and were raw, omlette and quiche were average. This B&B is screaming for a professional cleaner and a cook to run the place properly.
If you cannot afford a hotel in Vancouver downtown, this place is your best bet.

Disliked : The room was small and crowded, it was not clean to our standards, we asked the owner to clean it again and she did. We stayed in a second floor room and we had to walk through the private residence where the owner often was sitting, and her bedroom was next to ours, overall lack of privacy. It was awkward and unlike our other experiences at B & B's or Airbnb's. The front steps are treacherous and my spouse, a builder, said they would not comply with most building codes. At breakfast you have to sit on these hard cold ceramic stools, quite uncomfortable. Other guests we talked to felt the same. The location is in a residential section with nothing much in walking distance, the bus stop is several blocks away.
Liked :The hot breakfast was pretty good. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was spacious.

In advance: I am not fussy about cleanliness and condition of electrical installation. For less tolerant guests, however, I advise against this accommodation.
Room
I had the room 2010 with attached bathroom. The bathroom was clean and sufficiently large.
The video on the homepage is at least misleading as it only shows the private area of the hostess. Guests can use an area in the basement.
The kitchen there needs basic cleaning. This also applies to the guest room.
Service
The hostess is very eager and gives tips for sightseeing and restaurants.
The "continental breakfast" consists of coffee for home cooking and optionally a muffin or a croissant as well as a small bowl of fruit salad. Not as in the Expedia description "Great breakfast".
Location
The B&B is about 30 minutes by bus outside Downtown (line 7). You are therefore quick and easy in the city.

I'm sorry to say that this B&B was the worst experience in our 6 weeks travelling through USA and Canada. We spent 6 nights here, and it wasn't enjoyable. Joanne the hostess was a strange lady and when I confronted her as we were leaving I mentioned that I was sad that I wouldn't be able to give her a favourable review on Trip Advisor and her reply was "I don't give a dam what you say about me"!! I previously read reviews for this property and most people were positive and enjoyed the breakfasts. The first morning she cooked Japanese Omelette (okonomiyaki) which was very nice. We were told if we wanted breakfast before 9am we would have to have a continental breakfast but wasn't sure what that would include. At our first brekky we were told the next morning she would be cooking a quiche. I mentioned that my husband didn't like quiche, so would there be any cereal? The reply came back that she doesn't have cereal. I asked if she had any juice but she didn't have that either. For the rest of our stay (another 5 nights) we were never offered a cooked breakfast, but I must add that she asked us what cereal we would like and what juice and she did purchase that for us. We had been there 4 nights and not once was our room serviced so I asked her on the 4th day if she could service the room for us. My personal opinion is that the front of the home needs a lot of work. The front steps were unsafe and there are huge trees which were knocking against our window and during a very windy couple of nights, I felt really unsafe

What you see in line is not what you get if you are unlucky and get a room in this dank moldy basement. We booked this for a four day writers getaway. We had to getaway after one night. We had to negotiate a refund and one received 1 day refund. The owner told us Vancouver is damp and smells. She made excuses for the smell, the uncomfortable bed (no box spring she said good mattresses don't need one) she minimized every complaint and wrote me a nasty email when she erroneously believed I posted a negative review online. I have called Vancouver health department because of respiratory distress and poor air quality in the basement.

Fay I continuously strive to provide the very best environment for my guests and I am sorry to hear that you do not feel that I have attained that goal. If you check the other reviews on Trip Advisor, the vast number of my guests are very happy with my B&B. You should remember that I stated that Vancouver is very humid. I would never make a comment that Vancouver smells as this is just not the case. I am sorry that you felt that I minimized every complaint as I was merely trying to explain my side of your statements. You, in fact, did post a negative review online. This one is actually the second one that you placed. Most of my guests feel the bed is comfortable. I reiterate that most beds do not use a box spring as it is just not necessary. I wish you kind regards, Joanne

We stayed here for 6 nights and wished we could have stayed longer. The location is great, close to bus stops and in a particularly pleasant part of Kitsilano. The home is nicely decorated, has a beautiful kitchen and great places, inside and outside, to relax and read. We had a very comfortable bed and found our room a nice retreat with all we needed in it. We are not the easiest of eaters, with no meat and otherwise relatively strict wishes. This, however, was no problem for Joanne, who made us beautifully fresh and delicious fruit smoothies, and a variety of very creative and ultimately tasty breakfast dishes. It has been a wonderful stay and, with the price in mind, I think one cannot do much better in Vancouver.

We traveled to Vancouver for a week of vacation. Joanne's B&B gave us a terrific place to call home while we were there. Our room was tastefully done and we enjoyed access to the kitchen and refrigerator downstairs as well as the treats left out for her guests. This B&B is centrally located and Joanne has a wonderful book of top Vancouver sites and how to get there whether you have a car or are using public transportation. The breakfasts were the best food we had while we were in Vancouver. We enjoyed many walks around the beautiful neighborhood. Joanne's winsome smile and helpfulness made her a pleasure to be around. We recommend The House on Dunbar without reservation!
