The Hotel Grand Pacific garners high marks for its immaculate cleanliness and well-equipped rooms, set amidst an atmosphere that marries historical charm with modern comforts. Nestled in a prime location, guests have lauded its proximity to the harbor and downtown Victoria. While the hotel's amenities, including a restaurant and fitness center, are a hit, opinions on value diverge, with some guests considering it a fair deal and others less impressed. Service generally wins over guests, despite a few reports of inconsistencies.

My wife and I selected the Grand Palace as our hotel on a Clipper Vacation package from Seattle. The pleasant surprise was the short walk from the Clipper port to the hotel. The word grand does fit its stance on the edge of the bay and neighboring Legislative Building. The lobby area is stately and charming. You feel welcome just entering the area. Desk staff was prompt and courteous. Due to an arrival prior to normal check in, we were pleasantly surprised that our room was ready. Our room was on the 4th floor with a view of the bay and surrounding area.

After check in, we did a walk about to the area near the bay. Assorted hotels, eateries and beverage venues are a short walk.

After our walk and visit to various tourist sites, we felt like staying in. Not our normal pattern but we did room service for dinner. Food arrived at an eatable temperature(warm and crisp french fries) and were adequate portions.

The amenities, staff, room furnishings and overall feel of the hotel made it an outstanding stay for us.

A super nice hotel in a great location. Seriously. Walking distance to everything: Starbucks, downtown, restaurants, grocery, museums, Beacon Hill Park, Parliament, Ogden Point, Dallas Rd, Fisherman’s Wharf, Harbour, Market Square, Fan Tan Alley and so much more.

We were given a harbour view (booked a city view) and the view has been engrained in my mind. For $10 a stay you can get a microwave oven and with a Thrifty’s down the street, you can easily make a quick meal.

Our room was beautifully renovated with great WIFI, two beds, balcony, table, chairs, many USB outlets, robes, Kuerig, teas, fridge. The pool, hot tub, steam room and sauna was amazing. We did not get housekeeping service but often put out recycling and garbage outside our door in the morning and it was pick up almost immediately. Also had a list of items to be replenished and housekeeping put everything requested the in a bag NP. And who knew making the hotel bed was so difficult but it worked out ok. But I did miss the clean sheet and towel feeling when on a vacation. We found the room really quiet even staying on a lower floor.

Victoria is very quiet Monday and Tuesday’s as it seems that a lot of restaurants are closed and the tourist traffic is low. Lots of restaurants with happy hours which is great. Top 5 things I’m going to miss from our visit:

1. Gonzales Beach
2. Red Fish Blue Fish Seafood Chowder
3. Dallas Road
4. Beacon Hill Park (wild peacocks and farm!)
5. Drive through the Malahat/Sombrero Beach (too hard to pick)

Covid has definitely made an impact to Victoria (as with the rest) but we found everyone very welcoming. This was our first trip since COVID started and we couldn’t of gone to a bette place (without getting a covid test). Highly highly recommend this hotel.

Rooms are clean and quiet, all with balcony and amazing view. Staff are kind, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Pool and steam room are perfect and exercise room has all you could need for a great workout, even a separate room for balance and yoga exercises. I tend to arrive a bit frenzied, and always leave feeling rested and taken care of. The lounge has a neat speak-easy feel to it, often there’s local live music to pick you up or wind you down. The patio is sweet too, it faces the Inner Harbour with a pond and heaters and some of the best wines, whiskeys cocktails and edibles too. Can’t go wrong. I keep coming back.

So my wife asked about an impromptu visit to Victoria as her Christmas present, so I found myself scrambling just a bit to secure a nice hotel at a good rate. The rate I found for the Hotel Grand Pacific was quite good, and when I came here and saw the excellent reviews, the Certificate of Excellence award, and the blurb “recently voted World's Best, Top 500 places to stay by Travel + Leisure Magazine”, I was quite looking forward to our stay.

The Hotel Grand Pacific is very much the type of property my wife and I prefer; older, mature hotels that have been thoroughly refurbished and modernized. And the Hotel Grand Pacific does not disappoint with its lobby….starting with the snappily dressed doorman, holding the door open as you enter a large, lovely lobby was wood paneling as far as the eye can see. One thing that did differ about the Hotel Grand Pacific versus another recent stay of ours at a similar property was the hotel staff. Mature, polite, professional and efficient, they positively contribute to the “luxury hotel” vibe the Hotel Grand Pacific strives for. Add to this the presence of an actual Concierge, and yes, this was what I was hoping for.

Our room however…well.

Large enough, yes. But furnishings that were worn, and in one case damaged (a deep gouge). We actually reported it to the concierge to make sure we weren’t charged for it that is how bad it was. The gentleman handled the situation with the upmost tacit and professionalism, but it left me to wonder – how does that happen at a luxury hotel? Not the gouge – the hotel cannot control what heathens with money will do. But…why wouldn’t the piece of furniture been removed immediately after that guests’ stay? Are the maid staff not trained to look out for things like that so they can be dealt with? Does someone from management not inspect every room periodically (say, once a month)? It just struck me as...frankly…cheap.

The next disappointment was the hotel restaurant. At a luxury hotel typically the hotel restaurant is a decent one, and on occasion it might be one of the better places to dine in the city. At the Hotel Grand it was a “do not repeat” experience. We dined there twice, thinking the first time was surely a mistake. Nope – the food was indeed really mediocre, if not outright bad. Not up to the typical standards of a luxury hotel, and definitely not worthy of the prices we paid for both meals.

In summary, I would have to say our stay at the Hotel Grand Pacific was a “mixed bag”. Good location, great people, and a nice vibe in most ways. But the rooms leave a bit to be desired, and really, the restaurant should be better than that. Really.

No way is this one of the top 500 places to stay in the world, but if they had a good rate I would repeat. Barely. (Definitely not dying to return…)

Thank you for posting about your recent stay with us. I’m happy to hear that you appreciated the service and the welcome to our hotel. Please accept my apologies for the issues you had with the room. The room that you were in is slated for refurbishment this year, but you are right in expecting a higher standard from a hotel such as ours. We have had the item removed from the room and replaced. I’m also sorry to hear that you were not impressed with your meal at our restaurant. We take pride in the quality of our ingredients and the value that our menu offers, so your comments come as a disappointment. I would love to know more about the specifics of your meal so that I can pass along the feedback to our restaurant team. If you are able to, please contact me directly at 1-800-663-7550 so I can collect more information from you. Thank you again for reviewing your stay and I hope we'll see you again the next time you're in Victoria. Best regards, Reid James General Manager, Hotel Grand Pacific

We decided to do a last minute getaway to Victoria, and we chose this place based on the pics on the website. I was told that the only suite that they had available was called a "Signature Victoria Suite," which is described on the website as "newly renovated with bright fresh tones to delight business and leisure travelers alike," so of course we booked it. We arrived after 9PM, and the person who checked us in told my wife that we had received a complimentary upgrade; my wife was really excited because stuff like this rarely happens to us. When we entered the room we were amazed to see that the decor (carpet, sofa, bathroom tile, fixtures, etc) had not been touched in 30 years, it was authentic early 90's. We were a little disgusted (especially by the sofabed mattress), but we were ready to tough it out since we were only staying one night. But then, when our kids went to bed, we began to realize that they had stuck us in a room that basically enveloped the elevator shaft! The noise was loud and constant. That was the tipping point, I called down to the front desk and I asked why the hell they would stick us in that room. Amazingly they were able to find an available suite that was renovated, and so at midnight we moved our 2 sleeping kids and luggage from the 9th floor to the 2nd. The new room was impeccable, but that just made us angrier that they would stick us in the other room in the first place. And then, when my wife called the front desk for a late checkout the next morning, the same person who had checked us in was argumentative and unapologetic. I'm not sure how these hotels decide who is worthy of which room, but we visit Victoria often, and when we receive good service we are very loyal, so this hotel lost a potential long term customer by making a silly decision. My only regret is that I didn't take pictures of our first room (939 I think) so I could share them.

Dear Shane, Please accept our sincere apologies that your stay at the Hotel Grand Pacific did not meet your expectations. It may soften the experience to know that when our team discovered the purpose of your trip was to get away from construction, they responded in what they thought was in your best interest and found you a room on the 9th floor, far away from the construction currently taking place at the neighbouring property. The room that our team moved you to later in the day was in a higher room category that had previously been set up for a guest coming the following day (Hence the no late checkout policy on that particular room). I do apologize once again and have reviewed your comments with my team. Please reach out to me directly should you choose to visit us once again. Sincerely, Kirk MacMillan Director of Operations

Would stay here again for sure.

However...we think they could do much much better with keeping their rooms stocked with supplies. Especially seeing as there is no discount on the cost of the rooms.

We had to call for toilet paper, coffee, tea, cups, towels, conditioner.....Etc etc. Everyday. And then wait.

These things would be restocked everyday if we weren't in a pandemic. So one would hope that the property would restock these items everyday or call and check on what is required.

Instead we would have to call and then wait for them to come up with them.

I realize these are trivial in the big picture in life, but again, we paid a premium for the room and expect the same level of service when paying a full price while in a pandemic or not.

Otherwise, rooms are clean enough and nice.

Dear guest, Yes, you are correct, due to the pandemic and the current restrictions in place to keep our guests and staff safe and healthy, we currently rely on our guests to let us know when they require replenishment of their in-room amenities and supplies. Because of this we have been stocking our rooms with more supplies than normal and have found most of our guests staying for a couple of nights have not needed any additional supplies. But we do realize this can be frustrating at times when our guests need additional items. We can't wait until we are able to return to a more normal level of service, thank you very much for the feedback and hope to see you again soon! Warm Regards, Ian Wish Director of Sales & Marketing

We booked a family trip to Victoria and stayed 5 days at the Grand Pacific. We felt very safe and not crowded at this hotel. The staff were all very friendly and we had a special touch from the director of operations upon our arrival. Throughout the stay the staff were friendly, there were options to sanitize everywhere and signage reminding people to keep distanced. The restaurant had the best calamari ever and coconut mojitos that we have only been able to find in Vietnam. All in all just a fantastic stay at a great property with one of a kind location. Would recommend the Grand Pacific during these uncertain travel times as they make a concerted effort to keep you safe.

The hotel is spotlessly clean and follows Covid protocols thoroughly. It has a fresh well-maintained feeling. The room had a beautiful harbour view. Beds very comfortable. A mini fridge is a nice extra to find in a hotel room. Bathroom was clean and amenities provided are very nice. The parking lot has a complimentary EV charger which was an excellent bonus to recharge our vehicle. The restaurant food was absolutely delicious and the servers very friendly and attentive. Housekeeping staff were very obliging to our requests and promptly brought clean towels and coffee supplies. We accidentally left a package as we were checking out and staff turned it in to their lost and found. We were very appreciative of their honesty and they helped arrange for it to be shipped to our home. All in all one of the best hotels we have stayed at.

This hotel is the tournament hotel for my son's Squash Canada event.

Our one bedroom suite was spacious, comfortable and clean. The amenities on site for our son (squash court, pool) were easy to access. Staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful. Parking (at extra daily charge) was easy to access and we had no difficulties finding a spot upon our nightly return.

Location is ideal - an easy walk down to Government and Wharf Streets, with the right room (north facing), a great view of the harbor.

This hotel stay was bought as a package from BC Ferries Vacations and included the ferry cost to and from the island. The hotel service was excellent, the room was above our expected quality and the workout room was really functional and available. The restaurant in the hotel was very good, particularly for breakfast.
