The location of this hotel can't be beat, it's right in the midst of it all. Perfect for wandering downtown and the harbour and sightseeing. We really liked that. Parking was a bummer as we did use the nearby parkade, but that wasn't all that bad. The car had a place for the night and that's what really matters. Check-in staff member was very friendly. I really, really enjoyed the vibe of this place, the look of it and the charm! It has character, that's for sure. The only drawback was that the building is older and the plumbing was noisy at night. Overall we enjoyed this hotel and will definitely stay again another visit. It's not your average boring hotel!

Perfect tourist location, nice staff, great bed and larger room. Nice touch was a real Keurig coffee maker for those of us that can't leave the room in the morning without one or two cups. Government street in front of the hotel is blocked off so you can walk down the street and it's close to everything. As in many of the hotels in Victoria, parking is a big problem. You see people walking down the street with all their luggage trailing behind them. Our parking was about 3 blocks away and we got a deal with the hotel there. Only things they need to change is air conditioning and the use of safety bars in the bathroom. The air was a house type window unit that was down in the sitting area and the coolness didn't really reach the bed. While the bathroom was spacious, it was a bit weird. Toilet in it's own room and, if you're long legged or heavy, your knees are against the wall in front of you. That also makes it very hard to stand for someone who is tall and older, like me. A small help or safety rail would help a lot. And whom ever bought the shower needs to inform the poor renter how to use it! Very strange system that took a bit to figure out (One second freezing, then boiling hot). Also, the water comes straight down, like rain, cool right? But it's at the end of the tub with the curve so you can't stand under it without slipping. Again, no safety rails!

Location, location, location! The Bedford has the best accommodation location in Victoria and provides a central location for walking downtown. Close to great restaurants (the pastries at Murchies are 3 doors down) and pubs, bookstores (Munro's and Reed's), boutique shops, and the Bay right across the street! Close to the Empress and the Legislature buildings, two blocks from the harbour. Also easy (but longer) walking distance to the Art Gallery, James Bay and many other visitor sites.
The hotel is an aging beauty, a grand dame getting on in years, charming nonetheless. While there were some maintenance issues (a peeling bathtub, a TV remote that didn't work), they were addressed promptly and cheerfully and caused only minor inconvenience. Clean, comfortable rooms. Friendly staff.

I booked a room in this Hotel for Saturday December 15, 2024 through Expedia who are as useless an organization as I have ever seen. They take a fee and do absolutely nothing if there is a problem. It was raining on December 14, 2024. My luggage consisted of a large heavy suitcase for carrying items I purchased on Vancouver Island, an almost empty carry on bag, my personal bag and a case of wine. Government street is blocked off at times and you are unable to drive to their loading zone. I tried to get as close as I could, but traffic was very busy and there were no spots on the adjacent streets that were close. I contacted their front desk for help or suggestions and their service was brutal. The clerk kept repeating the same spiel about a loading zone that was inaccessible and what he called close by areas I could pull into while I checked In. I asked for help carry my luggage to the Hotel and was advised that they do not offer that sort of service. After a number of very frustrating attempt to find a spot to park while I checked in and slogged my luggage through the rain I finally told the clerk that I was not check in and expected a refund on any charges that they may have ran on my credit card. I went to a nearby hotel that has free overnight parking and that facilitated the transportation of my luggage to my room. I was told to contact the manager on Monday about a refund. I called and left a message for the manager and did not receive a response. I called back on Wednesday AM and was told that I would not receive a refund. I would never stay in this hotel again and would recommend that if you're looking for a hotel in Victoria look elsewhere.

Dear Guest, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We are truly sorry if you missed the parking information we provided. Details were sent to your email twice, as we always strive to keep our guests informed through both email communication and our website. While our location in vibrant downtown Victoria offers many benefits, we understand that parking can be challenging. Our team did their best to guide you to the hotel's designated parking area; however, the situation escalated, and your attitude, including yelling at our front desk agent, may have hindered effective communication. Regarding luggage assistance, we regret any misunderstanding. We do not provide porter services and encourage guests to plan accordingly when traveling with heavy luggage. To ensure fairness to all our guests, we strictly adhere to the cancellation policy outlined in your reservation, which is why you were charged only for the first night. We hope the rest of your holiday season is filled with peace and joy. Best regards, Guest Service Team

I had a pretty uncomfortable experience at this hotel. I changed rooms once because the vaping was bad on the first floor, so the manager moved me up to the fourth floor where there was no other guest staying. That improved the problem, but it didn’t fix it. It was better than the vaping I have experienced at other hotels, but it was still pretty bad. I found the smell coming out of something the wood in the closets by the bed were covering. It was likely ventilating up from the first floor where the original problem occurred. I was directly above it. On occasion, I was having trouble breathing, and my ears would pop too often due to the vaping happening. There was also a really unpleasant odor at times due to the vaping that made me want to throw up. The air quality due to the problem felt very unhealthy at times. When I called in advance to booking, the person I spoke with assured me that they take smoking serious, but when I asked about their enforcement measure once I started experiencing the problem, I was told there wasn’t anything they could do about it. If hotels are going to claim to be non-smoking, they have an obligation to provide non-smoking accommodations to their guests. Most hotels say they are non-smoking these days, but I am experiencing more smoking than I have in my twenty years of travel due to this vaping problem that the hotels are not addressing. They claim to take smoking seriously but have absolutely no enforcement measures in place when a complaint is made. This is a nice hotel in a great location, but if guests are risking their health and comfort to stay there, any amenity or positive aspect is just not worth it. If you are experiencing pressure on your chest, ears popping, musty or weird smells or general air quality issues, it’s likely that someone, or many people, is vaping in a nearby room.

I was disappointed with the room I got for the price I paid.
The first room #40, had large stains in the rug, broken lampshades and lifted tiles with grout missing in the bathroom. The noise from the pub below kept us awake past 1am. We got moved to #45 due to the noise and it was 2/3 the size of the first room. Minimal closet space, small bathroom and small window with no view…..for the same price….unbelievable.
If the blind was put down to keep the room dark, then the air conditioner was ineffective. Neither room had any drawers to put your clothes.
Another inconvenience is that the loading zone is around the corner from the hotel, and the hotel parking is two blocks away and $18 a day.
The location was great, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

Just for its location, I’d give this hotel a big 5. The staff are professional and helpful. The room was clean. However, our room (# 44) does not look like ANYTHING we saw online, except for the carpeting. The bathroom does not have a sink for one to wash their hands. Instead, the sink is next to the bed. It the bathroom, there’s only a shower and a toilet - no sink. No central air but a loud AC unit in the window. The TV set is placed very high on the left wall, way up there. One has to tilt their heads to watch TV. The little fridge (thank you) is almost in the middle of the floor. One could walk or trip on it. There’s an open space on the wall and below the TV set,not used, with a big pipe going through. There’s no closet to put one’s clothes but a sort of set of shelves without doors. I could go on. We feel we have been deceived because the photos we saw on Expedia are not an accurate or similar depiction of what this hotel gave us. We would have never booked and paid such amount of money for a room like this. We feel deceived. The authorities and/or regulating bodies should know about such deception. This place is not what you’d see online. Further, I wonder if the hotel gives this room to those who have booked a room through an online travel agency (e.g.: Expedia) and leave the best rooms for those who book a room directly with the hotel, I do not know but I wonder. A major disappointment.

I loved it! Anything in Victoria under $300 during the high season is a bargain, but not always up to snuff. No problems for me here, though. This is an older hotel, hasn't been jazzed up with all the latest trends but hey, it's Victoria, right? vintage is the theme and I'm tired of everything looking like a brand new condo! Bed was comfy, set into a charming arched alcove. Very clean. Older carpeting, pretty old pedestal sink in the room, you don't get a bathrobe or all the modern bells & whistles but you do get really nice staff, also a big main lounge area by the lobby with nice sofas, a fireplace, a big picnic style table and a service area with coffee, tea, microwave so you can bring your own lunch, read, just hang out or whatever. Some of the rooms, I understand, are noisy, facing Bastion Square or Government Street. Mine faced inward to an adjacent building and was very quiet. Finally, the location--right near absolutely everything a Victoria tourist would want to see, within a short walk. If you don't spend most of your holiday (or your money) inside your hotel, this is a great place for a good night's sleep in the heart of town. I felt like it was a little home away from home, will definitely stay there again.

The Bedford is a fine place to stay in Victoria and my wife and I will certainly stay there again, but only of we have a room toward the back of the building and not facing Government Street. The noise from the bar across the street was terrible. The music pounded and thudded far into the night precluding sleep. Earplugs issued with the rooms would be a fine idea. Other than that, the room was sparkling clean and tidy and full of thoughtful touches and supplies. Our reception was warm and business-like and very courteous. Happy to stay here again anytime, but away from the street noise.

It was good for one night. Front desk staff were good, but we never needed anything other than our room key. The lobby was lovely, I wish they’d spend a bit on the rooms, though. Nice location, but with no onsite parking. 18.00 per night to park in a parkade about 7 minute walk away. We asked for a quiet room, and we did get one. The room was very dated, but I’d seen pictures and thought I knew what we were getting. We called it unique, boutique and antique, with vintage thrown in. But, in reality, it was an awkward room. The bathroom is in parts, the water closest..is little. Advertised as a combined shower/ tub rain shower, but it is on the rounded edge of the tub, not centered and faced the wall so you basically showered against the wall. You had to lift your leg up on the edge, to be able to wash properly. No real door to it either, just a folding door. The TV was about 3 feet away from a sofa that was so well loved you couldn’t sit on it. It was inside a cabinet, and about the size of a desktop monitor. You pulled it out from the cabinet, and swivelled it towards the bed. That was interesting…but we weren’t there to watch TV, so it was ok. You could barely get by if it was open, though. On a brighter note. There was all the basic things you’d expect, iron, blow dryer, mini fridge, etc. They said our room overlooked the courtyard…which we couldn’t see.

you can not smoke outside the door for you have to be away from door.
There is a lot of shops on the street and to be the legal distance from a door is going to be tough. There are places to smoke but Victoria is a bit of a anti smoking town.
But you can find a place to smoke.
Parking is in a garage a block and a half away. The cost is around $11.00 plus tax for 24 hours. We felt this was very reasonable for the advantage of being in the heart of downtown. The facility is secure and you can come and go all day. When the garage is locked we got a card from the desk that allowed us to leave early in the morning or come back late at night.
There are more places to choose from in the Victoria area.
