Nothing feels more like Victoria than the Pendray Inn and Tea House (formerly the Gatsby Mansion). A boutique B&B experience in a historic Victorian mansion where each of its 10 rooms has its own distinct characteristics and charm. A heritage building, the mansion does not have an elevator and may not be suitable for guests with mobility issues.

Detailed Reviews
My wife and I recently stayed here for the weekend on our 5th anniversary. We stayed in the same room when we stayed there over 6 years ago, and we absolutely love the décor and changes that have been made. We also had our wedding reception there and this place never disappoints. From the charming character, to the way staff make you feel so welcome, The Pendray House is truly an exceptional place to stay. We loved our view over the courtyard and part of the Inner Harbour. The cleaning staff were exceptional and were treated to "turndown service" each night. The handwritten greeting card we found in our room was nice personal touch along with a prompt call from the front desk to confirm that we were happy with our room. The location is fantastic as all of the downtown amenities are within walking distance. The quaint breakfast that comes with your stay in the dining area is fabulous and delicious and you are made to feel so special as they are more than willing to cater to any dietary needs that you may have. We cannot say enough about how The Pendray House exhibits charm like no other hotel in the area, and the history that is attached to the house makes you feel like you are truly experiencing something out of the ordinary.
Just a word to those that may have difficulty with stairs; there is no elevator so prepared to carry your luggage to your room.
We will definitely be going back to this hotel in the future. A hidden gem in downtown Victoria !

This delightful B & B was originally a mansion built in the 1800's and now converted into 9 lovely rooms. The Inn still maintains it's grandeur of a bygone era with a beautiful fireplace, stain glass window, wooden banister and antique furnishings. We had the Queen Anne Suite which was lovely. It had a separate seating area from the bedroom and a small balcony that overlooked the harbor. The bathroom had a claw foot tub that I don't think was authentic but kept with ambiance of the era of the house. The bedroom was beautifully decorated in blue as was the sitting area. The included breakfast was wonderful and served on white table clothes and real china. If you are looking for sleek and modern then I would not suggest you stay here but if you want elegance and charm this is the place. There are no elevators or air conditioning but fans are provided in the room. We found just opening the window was enough to keep our room cool and comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful. As an added bonus the Inn is close to wonderful restaurants, and within walking distance of China Town, Parliament Building, the
harbor and Beacon Hill Park. The Inn also offers free parking. Can't wait to go back - if I could I would give this place 10 stars!

I cannot recommend Pendray Inn more! This place is steeped in history and you truly feel it as you walk around the home. From the creaking staircase to the painted ceilings, it's hard not to be completely enveloped in another place and time. This manor is from the 1800s, so you'll have to expect no elevators, small cracks on the ceiling, and bathroom doors that don't close quite right. None of that bothered us. We thoroughly enjoyed the included breakfast in the tea room as well. I cannot wait to return!

Our overnight stay at the Pendray Inn was above and beyond our expectations! Not only is it Victorian charm at its greatest, but the location is perfect for visiting beautiful Victoria, right across the street from the Clipper terminal, which we took from Seattle. The staff were very friendly and helpful, from Ashwin, the lead concierge, to Megan who served us the wonderful complimentary breakfast, which was comparable to the beautiful high tea we experienced there on our second afternoon. This historic family home has only 9 rooms, each beautifully furnished. Our huge bed was very comfortable, and the soaker tub was perfect after a day of walking at the famous Butchart Gardens. The Inn is even more gorgeous lit up at night and is a short walk to the Parliament building, which is also lit at night ,and another lovely colorfull waterfall lit up along the way. The Empress Hotel where we started on the bus tour was also a short walk from the Pendray Inn. Around the corner the other direction, it's another short walk to the Coast Hotel where we had a fabulous meal at the Blue Crab Seafood House. There is no elevator or air conditioning, but for early spring when all the flowers are blooming, it was no problem. And Ashwin had already taken our luggage up to our room when we returned from the garden tour. He even served us complimentary glasses of champagne, too! We were allowed to leave our luggage at the hotel while we toured Victoria the second day - very secure! The high tea was fabulous! We finished just un time to walk across the street and get on the Clipper ferry back to Seattle. We couldn't have had a better experience anywhere else. Highly recommend the Pendray Inn!

Dear Guest, Thank you immensely for your gracious review of your recent stay at the Pendray Inn. We're absolutely thrilled to learn that your experience surpassed your expectations and left such a lasting impression. It brings me great joy to hear that you found our Victorian charm captivating and that our location proved convenient for your explorations of Victoria. Ensuring our guests have a seamless and memorable experience is always our top priority, and I'm delighted that both Megan and I could contribute to your enjoyment of our complimentary breakfast and high tea. Your kind words about the comfort of your room, the enchanting ambiance of the inn at night, and the proximity to local attractions truly warm our hearts. I'm glad that our secure luggage storage service provided peace of mind during your explorations of Victoria, and I hope the complimentary glasses of champagne added a touch of luxury to your stay. Your recommendation means the world to us, and we eagerly anticipate the opportunity to welcome you back to the Pendray Inn for another exceptional experience in the future. This place is a real step back in time with plenty of period features and furniture. I stayed in the attic room which had both a bedroom and separate seating area as well as a bathroom with an old fashioned standalone bath which was wonderful.
They also had complimentary macarons in the room which was a lovely touch.
Check in was not a good experience however as the place was locked up when we arrived with no instructions and it wasn't till I went next door to the adjoining hotel that I was advised that check in was actually there instead. This is something which should have been communicated in advance and the computer system also appeared very slow as it took a good 10 mins to get the keys. Maybe an old fashioned paper booking diary would have been quicker!
There was breakfast included in the price and it was a lovely setting in one of the old dining rooms at the Inn. However it was styled like an afternoon tea and there wasn't much of it, more like small canapés than a hearty breakfast.
I also managed to leave my coat behind in one of the many cupboards in the room and initially I was able to communicate by email and ascertain that they had the coat and could post it on for me which was great. However after this initial email exchange there was silence for a week with me not knowing if it had been sent and when it was likely to arrive. After lots of email requests and 2 phone calls along with some mis information someone did come back to me to say it had now been posted but it still took a further week for the coat to arrive at address I'd requested. I know it was my fault for leaving it behind but they need to work on their customer service as one email with a tracking number would have saved a lot of time and worry.
Overall the Inn itself is an amazing experience if you like your history and it's in a perfect spot in between 2 harbour areas but I hope they can bring the service up to the same level.

Hello Helen, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We are very sorry about the confusion with the check in process. During Covid we did centralize our check-in to the main front desk at Huntingdon Manor and unfortunately with the ongoing staffing shortage we have not been able to fully reopen the Pendray Inn Front Desk yet. We are working on this though and as of this summer we have been able to re-open our Pendray Inn Front Desk with limited hours. We are also very sorry about the delay with getting your coat sent out to you. We are working on better team communication to ensure tasks like this are not falling through the cracks. We hope you enjoyed your visit to Victoria despite these issues and we hope you will stop by for a visit the next time you are in town.

Following receipt of my confirmed reservation for October 9-13, 2023, with the Pendray Inn and Tea House (Victoria B.C.) I phoned to confirm the rate the following morning, January 30, 2023. They initially said they would honor my rate but then put me on hold and came back and reversed their position refusing to honor the rate. I asked to speak with the manager and was advised she was busy but would call me back. A half hour later Julia Canton, Sales and Marketing manager (with responsibility for both the Pendray Inn and Tea House and the Huntingdon Hotel) phoned me claiming they had made a mistake on the computer pricing and they would not honor the price for which I had a confirmed booking. They offered me a discount which I did not feel appropriate and refused. Clearly my calling them to confirm the rate had alerted them to a rate problem they had posted both on the Booking.com website as well as on their own hotel website. This could/would have impacted many other guest bookings and created significant problems (their pricing mistake covered a three week period in October of 2023) which my follow-up averted for them.
Not satisfied with Ms. Canton’s offering, I attempted unsuccessfully to speak with Erin Cassels, the General Manager, several times on successive days asking her to return my phone calls. Two days later someone by the name of Chamil called extending the original 25% discount offer adding free parking ($12/day).
It is common practice to honor posted prices even when that posting is incorrect, or at least until a disclaimer is posted. I did not want my reservation cancelled. Nevertheless the Pendray Inn and Tea House cancelled the confirmed reservation.
I am NOT IMPRESSED.

Dear Guest, It's quite remarkable to receive your review a full year after the event, nonetheless, we welcome the chance to address your concerns. To clarify, last year, a technical glitch resulted in our rooms being advertised at an exceptionally low rate. This was swiftly corrected upon discovery, and we reached out to all affected guests, including you, with a sincere apology and a fair compensation offer of 25% off our best rate, considering the bookings were just made for stays still over 10 months away. We understand your frustration at not benefiting from the incorrect rate, but as you can imagine, maintaining them, which were over 90% lower than our normal rates, is not sustainable for any establishment. However, despite our several attempts to explain the situation and offer viable options in an empathetic and professional manner, our staff and management team were faced with undue hostility and a lack of cooperation in working towards a reasonable solution. Our decision to cancel the reservation was a last resort, made under challenging circumstances, and we do find it unfortunate that this was the outcome. Sincerely, Julia Canton Director of Sales & Marketing The Pendray Inn and Tea House

I just stayed in the Notre Dame suite and the website said it had a king size bed. The bed was more a double- maybe a queen. That was very disappointing. I also went to take a bath but there was no plug for the drain. Also no lock for the bathroom door as it had clearly been broken off a long time ago. I mentioned the bed situation at front desk and they politely argued with me that it was a king bed. Clearly they had not been in the room for some time because you can see right away it is not a king bed. I would not of booked this room if I knew the bed was small. Very misleading. The hotel is nicely situated in the inner harbour but i was disappointed in the room we stayed in

Dear Guest, Thank your for your feedback, we're sorry that we did not meet your expectations. There was indeed a mistake on our website stating that the Notre Dame room had a king bed while in fact it is a queen. The room recently changed bed type and we forgot to update the information on the site. Please note that at no time this was intentional false advertising and the error has now been fixed. The front desk has also been reminded of the change, so we should not expect any issues moving forward. Sincerely,

While at the inn, spotted a rodent running around the foyer and dinning room. Also very bad animal odour in Queen Ann suite. Complained to management and showed video of rodent running running around. Offered 50% off our last night there as we no longer wanted to sleep with rodents and stated they would charge me the cancellation fee. Told me that since they are near the ocean I should expect to see rats and mice. Photo attached is from the video I took of the scurrying fellow. Very poor service would not recommend

Dear Guest, Thank you for sharing your experience at the Pendray Inn. I deeply regret the unexpected sighting of a mouse in our dining room. During the recent heatwave, we prioritized the comfort of our guests by keeping the doors open for better air circulation. Our inn, given its proximity to the harbour, historic nature, and surrounding gardens, can occasionally face challenges like this, especially when wildlife seeks respite from extreme conditions. We have robust pest control measures in place, and the occurrence you witnessed was certainly an exception, not the norm. Our team's response, waiving the cancellation fee and offering a 50% discount on your last night's stay, was a sincere attempt to acknowledge and address the situation. I would also like to address the mention of "animal odour" in the Queen Ann suite. This is the first we're hearing of it, and it was not brought to our attention during your stay. We take all feedback seriously and will certainly look into this. We appreciate the time you took to share your thoughts. Kind Regards, Mercedes Granados, Front Desk Manager

An elegantly designed hotel, with some nice amenities, but in need of some updated maintenance. We had a very nice spacious room with partial views of Victoria Inner Harbour. The bed was wonderful and nicely furnished. The bathroom was well appointed. The room was several flights upstairs, and had a beautiful wooden staircase.
Fortunately, a nice young man carried up our luggage. As far as updates, the room lacked air conditioning, and it would have helped greatly if the windows had been dual paned to keep out the heat and outdoor noise. It is evident that the exterior is in need of a paint job. A wonderful three tier breakfast was a great edition to our stay. They needed some help at the front desk, one the lady we dealt with was very nice, but had a very thick accent that made it difficult to understand. We had to go to a neighboring hotel to check out, because no one was at the front desk at the time.

Dear ww11hort, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your stay with us. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us and we are happy that we could make your stay memorable with our stylish breakfast and unique comfortable rooms. As you stated we have a Concierge on site at the Pendray inn who helps guests with check-in and luggage. However, at times due to labour limitations, check-in or check-out may be done by the Front Desk at the Huntingdon Manor which is adjacent. We appreciate your point on the exterior paintwork and in fact there are several restoration projects planned during our off season and hopefully you will see a rejuvenated Inn in your next stay with us. With regards to the air conditioning, since it is a heritage property and due to several obstructions, there are some difficulties having air conditioning at the Inn. However, we value your feedback as this helps us to improve our services. We look forward to hosting you again in the future! Kind Regards, The Team at Pendray Inn & Huntingdon Manor

We took our Harley for late summer run to Victoria. I chose Pendray Inn mostly based on the delicious looking breakfast! And it didn't disappoint! We loved the building and the history of it. We loved our little suite with a harbour view. I hope the Pendray Inn will survive the Covid times and gets a good fresh coat of paint as it's looking somewhat neglected on exterior. We rented bikes from next door to Pendray and had a great scenic biking day all around the peninsula. Great trip!
