The Strathcona Hotel is frequently acknowledged for its excellent value, offering guests clean rooms and a strategic location at competitive prices, although a few find the cost slightly steep considering the amenities. While the service garners high marks for staff helpfulness and efficiency, some guests have called out the noise level as a concern, particularly from the street and the nearby nightclub. Despite this, the central location near key attractions and the overall cleanliness of the hotel consistently earn rave reviews from travelers.

Staff at front desk were quite rude. Make sure you speak to staff at the hotel about everything that is including and get confirmation because by the time you get there you may not get everything that you paid for. Breakfast was suddenly no longer available when we arrived and staff had no intention of doing anything to remedy the situation.

Hi! Thank you for taking your time to write a review and share it with others. Can you please specify what exactly was not confirmed to you that you paid for? As for continental cold breakfast, it was cancelled in the beginning of July, and we were very open about it, so you definitely have confirmation with reasoning and compensation options. Kind Regards, Olly Khrebtiievskyi Hotel Manager

This is the first time I'm have stayed at this property. Perfect location, very friendly and helpful staff. Huge room. Very nice, lovely bathroom,

BUT...the card entry system really needs updating. You swipe a card with a magnetic strip and doesnt always
work. Really annoying. If you swip r card normal speed, doesn't work. You have to swipe so slow....waste of time!

I would definitely book here again .

Oh, I haven't had the breakfast yet as I write this. Just be warned however that I was advised they only, serve a cold food continental breakfast(cold, except hot coffee.

If you want a hearty warm breakfast, you'll have to go elsewhere in which case I would recommend CORA'S, across street and down a block

Hello Goldersgreen, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on TripAdvisor. I am happy to read that you enjoyed one of our newly renovated rooms in our great location, and that you got to experience our helpful and friendly staff. In the next year or so we will be updating our entire key entry system to one that does not require "swiping" a key card. I am not sure if this will be done the next time you come to stay with us, but we look forward to welcoming you back. Kind Regards, Tara

Upon entering the hotel, I was greeted by a polite front desk agent who gave me a room key and was able to give me my room early (before 4pm) which was greatly appreciated. I spent two nights in that room, it was a double queen room, spacious albeit dated amenities and an older bathroom but it was clean. The room had zero view, I actually looked out onto an alcove of air conditioners and other windows, but I didn't mind that. I didn't set the bar too high with this hotel as it advertises itself as a 2 star. Checking out from this hotel was a breeze and they were able to store my luggage at no extra charge which was very convenient for me.

A few nights later I returned to this hotel, and after dealing with a very inept and unfriendly front desk agent, was given a different room, this is my 1 star room. It had 1 queen bed and an extremely dated bathroom that was from the 80s. It had no air conditioning and instead had two tower fans in the closet that could be used. The room overlooked the patio of the bar next door which made me concerned and rightfully so as the windows were definitely not sound proofed and the noise/music lasted right up to 1:00am. I barely slept a wink that night and it was my worst hotel stay I had ever had. The bed was lumpy too. The next morning I checked out as late as I could as I tried to get some sleep to make up for the awful night. I was so happy to leave this hotel and was shocked that one hotel can offer two completely different experiences. I would not recommend this hotel.

The location is excellent. Nice and friendly staff. In my case breakfast was included in the price and even though breakfast buffet was not possible due to Covid, they provided single breakfast bags. The room was clean with everything you might need and the hotel is quiet at night.

We were so impressed by the wonderful staff at front desk! So friendly, kind and personable! The hotel is beautiful, from the lobby to the renovated rooms. Beds were so comfortable and best pillows!
The bagged breakfast was a nice alternative as regular breakfast not safe during Covid times. We were offered a full sanitization of room on fifth night of stay but declined.
It is noisy at night being on the main street but we just turned window fan on and had wonderful sleeps!
Thanks to all for a wonderful stay!

This place was in a great location. There is also a couple restaurants in the hotel with easy take out and a liquor store too! The parking was pretty straight forward, just pull up to the curb to get settled into your room. Then the clerk will give you directions on how to find the parking lot that is across the street from the hotel on Courtenay St. They still provide a Covid friendly breakfast, which was really great. And the room was good for the amount we paid.

We were fortunate to be able to book one of the King suites on the 5th floor, likely because it was peak season and all the lower priced rooms were gone. But this probably worked in our favor because it then eliminated some of the issues that I believe people may have with other rooms due to the age of the building itself (lack of AC, no view, street noise). The all-in rate of about $375 per night will not work for everyone, of course, but during peak season and being able to get a very quiet, comfortable room with most of the comforts and amenities one would like was worth it for us. We’ll stay there again, for sure!

The hotel did not inform me nor state on the booking there was no AC in the room I booked. Upon arrival, I had to pay extra fees because the hotel intentionally omitted these details, most likely so they can sell these rooms off. Staff informed me they've had this issue with many prior guests, yet after speaking to the front desk manager she still has not fixed the issue nor offered to waive the extra fees. Bedding was cheap and uncomfortable, they couldn't afford duvet covers so they sandwiched the duvet between two bed sheets. Would not recommend for the price.

Hello Nabeela, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with Trip Advisor. We are sorry that there was some confusion with our differing room categories and rates, the amenities available in each room, and the way our amenities are advertised. Typically hotels do not advertise what they do not have, but instead opt to advertise what services we do provide. We have advertised which rooms come equipped with AC, the coffee/tea station, and a microwave; however, if the room type does not offer these items they are not noted in the list of amenities in that room. Our room types that do come equipped with AC or a coffee/tea station for example, have been renovated, offer more modern furniture, updated washrooms, and are larger, as such there is a difference in the room rates for different room categories, but this is not an "extra fee." Our property uses triple sheeting in the hotel as we find duvet covers to be awkward for both guests and staff for many reasons. There is a fitted sheet on the mattress, then a top sheet, the duvet, and then a thicker flat sheet on top of the duvet. Pre Covid we also had decorative bed scarfs, but we have removed those for the time being. It is unfortunate that you did not enjoy your visit with us, but I am happy to see that you enjoyed our great location, and were able to experience Victoria. Kind Regards, Tara

Extremely Dissatisfied

Checked in Friday night with no issues and addressed we would also be checking back in under another reservation the next day. This time into a different room as we would be having more guests joining us for our Saturday stay and we would require an additional bed.
As we checked out on Saturday morning we asked if we could store our bags as our new room wasn’t ready yet for us to check into. We advised we wouldn’t be checking in until probably after midnight as we were at a wedding and we were told this was not an issue. Now flashforward to 1:15 am when we arrived at The Strathcona we were told we did not have a reservation. We just wanted to go to sleep and now we are told we don’t have a reservation. I had proof of my email with my confirmation number, I showed the correct spelling of my first and last name (including the incorrect spelling of my first name on the reservation they created and still they couldn’t find us).

How does this happen??
After around 40 mins of back and forth not knowing if we had a place to sleep the night desk Attendant Jesse was lovely and managed to get us into a room that was meant for emergencies/ the newly renovated. However, this room only had one bed and a pull out couch.

The next morning at check out we thankfully were only charge the initial rate that we booked under. However there was no additional compensation. After speaking to the front house manager he told us this was our “free upgrade” to the nicest room in the hotel as compensation. Sure this may have been an upgrade for 2 guests however, since there were 3 of us one person had to sleep on a hide a bed and had a terrible sleep. We booked this hotel anticipating (and BOOKING) a 2 bedroom room and that is not what we ended up with. The manager said it was weird that this happened as he could see our reservation the next day and that our room was left unattended all night.

I am not sure how a reservation could get lost in space then reappear. I’m thankful for Jesse who managed to find us somewhere to rest our heads for 8 hours. However, extremely disappointed with how it was handled by management. This room we were given was not an upgrade to us as in did not meet our needs (2 beds).

Hopefully this is a learning curve for the front end team and they can prepare for this to not happen again.
