We renovated Hotel Zed Victoria to celebrate our tenth birthday! Your stay will be soaked in groovy, swanky 70’s vibes. We’ve booted up our time machine to take our guests back to the 70’s with retro-chic décor that’ll remind you of the vibes of your granny’s crib. But only if your granny had the coolest pad on the block. If you book a Rebel Room, you’ll need to change the dial on the time machine. These rooms will transport you back to the bodacious 80’s, with neon lights and murals that’ll make you think you’re on the set of Miami Vice!

As a tourist destination in the high season, Victoria is not a cheap place. Relatively speaking, this establishment offers a competitive product. It may feel slightly underwhelming, but you are saving a bit by staying here. It’s located on a busy highway strip just on the outskirts of the city centre, and very convenient in terms of providing parking, access to BC Transit bus routes into the centre, and access to fast food, available at the KFC adjacent to the property and at the suburban shopping mall across the street. However, the neighbourhood is not the most salubrious part of town, and sketchy shenanigans, while not threatening, keep the proceedings somewhat interesting.

To cheer things up, Hotel Zed comes along as a refreshed vintage motel in bright, happy colours, and a cheeky attitude, which include minimal but effective mid-century furnishings. Thankfully, this property does tick all the basics: cleanliness, competent housekeeping, helpful and friendly staff, adequate room temperature control, noise levels under control (after 9.00pm – stay far, far away from the noisy, reverberant pool area), comfortable bed, good water pressure and water temperature controls in the bathroom, adequate toilet pressure, sufficient electrical outlets to charge your piles of modern junk, and workable wi-fi. While not as exciting as it may initially seem, overall, it’s a safe, reliable choice. We stayed here a few times for work, and your bosses probably will be pleased that you're not breaking the bank.

Absolutely adore the Hotel Zed chain. This was our second time staying here, and we couldn't have been happier. They have converted a dumpy old 1960's motel into a new and hip hotel, and it works. We first went the year they opened and stayed 2 nights which was fab, and now we returned about 6 or so years later and they are still fab. Didn't use their pool or slide, nor did we borrow bikes this time, but did the last time we stayed and had so much fun! The rooms are not air conditioned, but with 2 Vornado fans, and the fact that the sliding door opened and we could get fresh air while we slept? Fantastic night. Had our dog with us so they put us in a "dog room", which was still quite pleasant, and would definitely stay again. The adjacent restaurant has some of the best breakfast I have had in a while, had the chicken and waffles, can not go wrong. Love the customer service, the vibe and the whole experience. Happy to give them my hard earned money. I just hope they do not sell out and lose their charm, like so many hotel chains have done (looking at you Kimpton hotels). Can not recommend enough. If you do borrow a bike, make sure to ride the adjacent bike path for about a mile and stop at the lovely bakery Cafe on the path, the pastries and coffee are divine.

We went during a peak time and so hotels in Victoria were relatively expensive. We selected this place because it was less expensive than places in/very near downtown and it got good reviews.

The place is funky (in a good way - it’s a throwback of sorts), a little quirky, and everyone working there gets in on the idea.

There’s a ping pong table, a water slide, and bikes to use for free. There’s a mall across the street and plenty of busses to whisk you around - to downtown, to nearby locations, to the ferry, to buchart gardens and more.

Honestly it’s only about 2km/1.5 miles to town along the main route or back on the galloping goose trail. So it’s not that far from downtown. And do take the trail walking or on a bike! It’s worth it!

The downside is that this is a motel (doors facing outside and no interior corridors), it’s on the main road, and there are a large number of (admittedly polite) homeless people very nearby. It’s a little unsettling, though it’s not a direct reflection on the hotel.

The rooms are spacious, we got one with a kitchenette, and they are very clean. All of those make up for whatever downsides.

It was a fine stay and we were overall pretty happy.

Honestly maybe it should be 3.5 stars. I went into it expecting something not as nice and left with a good experience.

One note to travelers coming to Victoria: things tend to close fairly early. If you are off doing various activists and get back too late, you may have trouble finding places to eat dinner. That’s true near the hotel and closer to downtown.

Basically this is an old "summer beach" motel that was renovated to make it hip, maybe they should have invested a bit more to soundproof the rooms and update the bathrooms/plumbing. We were kept up at night with the folks above us walking around and watching TV. In the early morning, we had our side neighbor's kids providing us with an unsolicited wake-up call. Neither one of them were being particular loud, it's just that the walls are "thin". It is a cool place to stay, beds are comfy, the decor is great, staff are fantastic, the free bike rentals along with the laundry facilities for guests to use are awesome and appreciated. However, we found it to be somewhat overpriced and Ruby's, although delicious, was also overpriced.

Very impressed from the moment we stepped foot in the lobby. The reception was very welcoming. All the many cool things to look at in the lobby. Loved the special touch with the fresh ground coffee and cream. The room was super clean. No elevator so we had to use stairs, but they told us that at time of booking so it was no surprise. The decor was fun and amazing. Fun place to just relax in. Not just another hotel room. Even had a working rotary phone. And it was orange lol. I love it! We had the king room which had a microwave mini fridge, kettle, and French press in it. Along with glasses and mugs. The price was phenomenal. We used our BCAA discount. The bed was very comfortable. The pillows were great. The duvet was great. Had a little trouble navigating the TV, but that’s the way technology is nowadays. I’m always happy when I see charging stations on the bedside tables. We will definitely be back and maybe next time will be able to use the pool. I was in a cast this time so I couldn’t. Free parking came along with the room, which is always nice in Victoria as it’s very expensive to park. Mayfair shopping centre directly across the street if you’re wanting to do some shopping. There is a restaurant for breakfast, which we did not utilize, but definitely would next time. A few amenities that you could walk to. Restaurants, coffee shops, grocery store. Thanks Hotel Zed, from two Rebels who will be back 💕

What a wonderful surprise! We chose this hotel because of the proximity to our daughter's home in Victoria and because of the great little restaurant that is part of the Hotel. We were excited to have our meals at "Ruby's Cafe" but unfortunately, due to renovations, the restaurant was closed. We were generously compensated for the lack of the restaurant and treated to a discount which we did not expect nor ask for.

The beds were so comfortable, the pillows the best and the staff even better. This will be our go-to Hotel from now on in Victoria. We have usually stayed at $$$ Hotels on the waterfront but this one is so full of personality and charm that we prefer this. As well, extremely clean!

Despite it being a partial building site, the reception was a great welcome and the room was a delight with very comfortable furniture, good lighting, fresh coffee and tea-making facilities. Quiet and relaxing. Just what a mid-seventies couple needed. Don’t understand why Ruby’s wonderful eaterie is not highlighted on the website or did we miss something? Ruby’s has wonderful food! The staff were all round excellent.

Hotel Zed was very fun with funky decorations. My partner and I stayed in the “bachelor pad” room with our dog.

Pro’s: cool art, big shower, comfy bed, accepts dogs for a fee, fun water slide!

Con’s: room is VERY small (promo photos taken with fisheye lens), very loud bathroom fan vent, pool closes early with no adult-only time, expensive for what you get (basically a bed)

Stayed for three nights at the end of March with kids ages 10 and 12. Chose this hotel to be closer to my brother’s house (than staying downtown) and for the pool/water slides.

Hotel Zed does a great job playing up the retro theme. Website is a perfect representation of what to expect. We had a Sweet Suite and it was a great size for a small family. Not a ton of storage space but we made due. Love having a little kitchenette for snacks. We didn’t prepare any meals but you absolutely could! We had a little stovetop, pots, sink, fridge, microwave, dishes. The room had a bit of a musty smell but it wasn’t overwhelming or awful.

Beds are doubles and perfectly comfortable for this class of hotel. No complaints! They have obviously invested in upgrades and keeping the property clean and in good working order. It’s retro but not shabby.

The locations is great for being central but it is noisy. Between a busy road and a large construction site. They provide earplugs for a good reason. Didn’t bother us but it might for others.

Kids enjoyed the pool and water slide. They do a good job of putting in little sitting/hangout spaces where they can. Kids also enjoyed the ping pong lounge.

Our room was not serviced during our stay. Not sure if that’s normal or a covid thing. If we really needed it, I would have asked.

The wifi was pretty bad. If I had needed to work, it would have been a problem.

Overall, a great stay! Reminded us of the Kings Inn in San Diego but better kept and updated. 100% recommend!
