Greg and his team are professional and experienced and understand how to provide a top notch wilderness fishing experience. This is certainly the best lodge on Gods Lake. Food and accommodation at this lodge are very good and the lodge staff is excellent. I had an issue with my guide and Greg was quick to resolve the situation. I was at the lodge for eight days and saw every type of weather that the north can throw at you in July, be prepared for sun and flat water and whitecaps and driving rain. Fishing ran from slow to exceptional as the week progressed with one afternoon producing over 60 pike half of which were over 30 inches. In my opinion a fly out for brook trout on Gods River is a must, the fly out for pike not so much. I've been to numerous lodges across western Canada I will return to Gods River Lodge.

For my 4th visit to God's River Lodge, I went in early August 2017. This is the first time I have not gone in early June, when there has still been some ice flows on God's Lake. God's Lake is a large Lake in northern Manitoba, with God's River draining it north to Hudson's Bay. The lake offers up terrific fishing for lake trout, pike and walleyes, but it is the river and it's brook trout that are the draw for me. Having grown up in Wisconsin, my experience with brookies usually happens in the 8 or 9" range. Double digits happen but are a rarity. In Manitoba a trophy class brookie is 20", although the 17 to 19" brookies from God's River are thick and strong and would be fish of the year for most brookie fishermen. I don't count fish, but I have to imagine I am over 50 trophy brookies from God's River in my 4 visits, not counting the non-20" brookies and a whole lot of Walleyes and Pike. I got 9 trophy brookies on my August 2017 visit. If brookie fishing got a little slow, we didn't have to look for pike, they found us. If we could get past the pike, we boated a bunch of walleye too. I'm retired and not made of money. Still, fishing is my favorite hobby. I am always looking for new places to go and crossing places off my list that I'm not interested in returning to. I currently live in Illinois, but in 2017 I will have fished in North Carolina, Missouri, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Utah, Montana, Washington, Vermont, and yes, Manitoba. Many of those are repeat visits. Some, I will return to, some probably not. God's River Lodge holds a definite spot on my hope to return list. I've never targeted lake trout and have never caught one. Next time, maybe I'll give that a try. But in the mean time, God's River and God's River brookies will draw me back for as long as I am able. God's River Lodge has the absolute best access to the river. For me, it is a very pleasant and reasonably priced place to visit. I enjoy revisiting the people that work there.

I stayed here for one night for business reasons during the off season so I my review is not concerning service by staff or meals, merely the accommodations. I stayed at the main lodge, which while nice a closer look reveals the need for some TLC as evidenced by a prized 40lb trout caught by a Tennessean which is about to loose a couple of fins. It is as one would expect for a fishing lodge, private rooms (well kept, though needing door locks) and shared common room & bathroom facilities (overall clean given multiple users). While there is Wi-Fi, it works better closer to the kitchen. The internet connections up the North are usually much slower than lower Canada, so don't expect to play on your phone or tablet, and VoIP calls (Skype & etc) will have a delay. One recommendation I would make to prospective customers is bring your own mattress. The single bed I slept in may as well have been made of rock.

I have been to God's River Lodge several times in the past ten years (An industry group - Not planned by me). The fishing is FANTASTIC. The service has been poor to terrible. "Guides" falling asleep while at the tiller and boat crash resulting (Lodge guests on board) to start with the worst. Theft from cabins by locals has happened nearly every trip. At a minimum the "Guide" will insist on a 30 - 45 minute boat ride to get to the fish.... My buddy and made our guide check out water within 10 minutes ride and caught Pike between 30" and 41" until we said "uncle". I'm researching Manitoba lodges for a future trip and GRL is NOT on my list.

Short review. The fishing is THE best you could ever hope for. The Laker I posted was 42" and probably 35 lbs. That particular day it was in the 40's, and raining all day. Our guide had no problem taking us out even though most of the guests decided against going out it waas so bad. The rooms are nothing special but spacious enough to sit around and have a few beers. There is a wood burniong stove in the cabin so I do not know why the other guy did not have heat. The fly out to Semmons is a must at least once in your limetime. Me and my buddy caught over 100 northern that day. We had 10 masters between us (over 42'). We must have had 30 or more that were over 40" but below the master limit. I caught a master on my first cast. Absolutley incredible. The brook trout fishing is world class. Check the manitoba records and most of the masters are caught on God's lake each year. You'll get them as big as 20" to 25" or even bigger. Crazy. The guides, and all of the Indians for that matter, are very quiet and non talkative, they seems almost depressed. you would too if you lived 300 miles form the nearest road and had only four month of tolerable weather. they were by no means mean or angry at the customers. That just how they are so deal with it. The fishing overshadows any minuses. We'd even go out after dinner for 3 hours for a $20 tip from each of us to the guide. Bring a carton of cigarettes with you. A few packs a day given to the guides is much appreciated. I've been there twice and I will not go anywhere else. Alswo, unlike the other review, there were may other people that were repeat customers while we were there. Also, God's lake is definitely in God's Country. The lake is absolutely beautiful. Oh, and the pic below in which we have $2 rainsuit on, American Airlines lost our luggage (and tackle) so we went ot Walmart at 4 am and got Snoopy poles and a few lures. We caught our 6 am fly in to camp. Those walleyes were caught before noon after about a little over two hours.....with snoopy poles and in a little rain. This place will not disaapoint if you are a true fisherman.
