Hotel's Favourite
We stayed at the Fort Garry Hotel during a road trip this past summer. We liked it so much we stayed at the Fort Garry again on the way home. The rooms were quiet and comfortable, but have so much more character than a generic modern hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful, and were happy to take us on a tour of their magnificent ballroom (as seen in several Hallmark movies). Breakfast indoors at the restaurant, and dinner outdoors at that patio were both superb. The hotel is located not that far from the "The Forks" historic district, or the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. My wife says it's her favourite Canadian hotel. I don't disagree.

Absolutely terrible experience at this hotel. We stayed here 11 years ago & thoroughly enjoyed it, but I will never stay here again. Rooms are small, hot!, with very few electrical plugs. When we checked in we opened the door to our room & it must have been 85 degrees! The heat was going full blast, no way to open a window to cool it off. All the hotel did was offer to bring a fan to the room. We had an excellent meal the first night, but it quickly went downhill after that. The worst eggs Benedict I’ve ever had, completely inedible. Waited forever to be seated for breakfast both mornings, one server was responsible for the whole dining room as well as seating guests. Attended a welcome dinner with a tour group & my vegetarian meal was a large hunk of roasted (?) cauliflower that was completely inedible. Tried to contact the front desk by pressing the indicated button on the phone in the room, but could not get the call to go through. It turns out I was supposed to press “0”, how was I to know that? Was not able to connect to the hotel WiFi, received a message saying there was no guest by that name registered in the hotel. I could go on & on. Just a really unpleasant experience.

Watch out for racially motivated discrimination at the restaurant! My wife and I went for what we thought would be a pleasant Christmas getaway at Fort Garry Hotel and went down to the restaurant for Christmas breakfast only to end up with our very first taste of racially motivated discrimination by the restaurant head, Mr. Mike Stans who specifically ignored us for well over an hour and a half. Mr. Mike Stans's body language and attitude from the moment we walked in made it obvious we were not wanted there (at least by him). We had initially put it down to some other delay in the breakfast delivery until we noticed that EVERY single guest that arrived well after us was being served. When it became painfully obvious that we were being overlooked (we were the only black people in the restaurant), we asked for some explanation and finally got a rather smug apology from Mr. Mike Stans. By this time, our Christmas breakfast experience had already been ruined and we were deeply disappointed that we would have such an obvious display of racism in Winnipeg's iconic hotel and on Christmas day for that matter. So sad and unfortunate! E.K

The hotel building is beautiful, a little extra at Christmas with all the decorations. We stayed for four nights. The room was lovely, decorated in a style to suit the age of the hotel. Comfy bed, feather pillows, robes in the room. We added a romance package one night, which included wine and strawberries plus breakfast the next morning. It was well worth the price. Good shower, lots of pressure, nice amenities provided. Shower could use an exhaust fan or an opening window in the room to avoid steaming up the whole room! The gym is small, but very well equipped. Location is great. It's an easy walk to the train station, The Forks and the Human Rights Museum. Heated, underground parking was great and seemed very secure. I'd stay here again if I returned to Winnipeg.

Went for a one night couples getaway. Had been at the hotel before but never as a guest. Service was great and they adapted quickly to pets. They have underground heated parking which is nice in the winter. Rooms were spacious and well kept. Had two meals and restaurants on site are busy so you will want to make a reservation if you want to eat there. Service was always friendly. Always amazingly decorated. Overall a great stay.

We had a delicious lunch in the Oval Room a very elegant and most delightful room! The service perfect and the food was exquisite! Made for a very enjoyable afternoon. We enjoyed a long conversational lunch and did not feel rushed. We both enjoyed the presentation of our food as well as a delicious dessert. A place to enjoy ambiance and delightful cuisine.

We were told that this was the best hotel in Winnipeg. If so, there is a very low bar to achieve that. This was a grand old hotel built during the hay day of the railroads. It was designed to impress guests with power and wealth of the railroads and the elegance and prestige of travel by rail. It’s a good location especially if you are traveling by rail. The hotel staff are friendly and reasonably efficient. Our bags were in our room by the time we finished check in. The lobby and public areas maintain much of their original grandeur. That is where the good stuff ends. Upper Floors and Rooms The hallways were done in darker shades of gray that gave me the impression of walking down a prison gallery. They are dark and quite dreary. The rooms are in the same shades that seem depressing. The furniture was probably chosen to keep a 1920’s feel. The problem is that wrought iron bed steads make reading or watching TV in bed a challenge. There is no comfortable position. Storage space is limited as are electrical outlets The bathroom seems to have updated last in the 1990’s. The ceramic tiles had been drilled and patched a number of times. The random designs are those typical seen in home design magazines 40 years ago. Again, counter space and store space are limited. Towel racks and other wall fixtures were of a very cheap variety—think entry level Walmart style. Some were falling off the wall. Food. Food at the Fort Gary would be called mediocre, if we gave it the benefit of the doubt. The breakfast buffet is very poor. The egg dishes were an imitation of Benedict of Florentine. Those dishes really need to be prepared fresh, not allow to sit in a buffet tray for half an hour. The Benedict sauce had no flavor. The English muffins were soggy and stuck to the bottom of the pan. Really, scrambled eggs would have been a vast improvement. The Oval Room does not do any better for dinner. Food is overcooked, overpriced and under flavored. I had a $55 veal chop that I asked to cooked rare. It came medium well, and that was how they left it. We did two group dinners in a private room. The quality of the food…well, I risk repeating myself. It took staff about half an hour to serve a salad. Then it took another full 60 minutes to serve entrees. That was after our hosts went to the kitchen to see what the problem was. Many of our colleagues did not bother to finish the meal. My advice is to check out other hotels in the downtown area. You have to be able to find better.

Hello Shuarjefe, thank you for taking the time to share your detailed review of your experience staying with us as we value your honest feedback. We are happy to hear that our staff was friendly and welcoming. However, we are disappointed to read the rest of your review and are sorry to see that you did not enjoy your experience. Our hotel is a 110 years old. so that does come with its challenges but we are consistently updating and renovating the hotel, yet keeping all of its historic beauty.
