I stayed with my daughter in a double room and it was $343 before taxes. The room was tiny as was the bathroom. The pillows were horrible although the bed was comfortable. The view was ugly as it was the side of the building. Had to lug my large suitcase up the stairs from the Parkade as there was no elevator. Severely overpriced for what you get. I had a reservation for a couple of weeks later for our 40th anniversary for a suite but found out it was falsely advertised. I have usually stayed in suites because it offers a separate bedroom. My husband is an early riser and I prefer to sleep in. Had I not asked we would have been given a “studio” for the price of a suite. I have never seen a hotel advertise a studio as a suite before. Poorly done

Hello Cynthia, I’m so sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy your stay with us. The room you were staying in was a standard double room and not a suite, which is why it was on the smaller side. As far as the view, our hotel is shaped like an E, so some of our rooms look towards the other side of the building. In the future, you can request a room with a view and we will do our best to give those requests priority over the rooms with an outward facing view. I apologize you weren’t told a head of your arrival that the upper parking lot comes straight into the lobby of the hotel and that you would not need to take the stairs. If you could kindly let us know where you saw that our rooms were being advertised as studios, we would like to correct the information. We have a variety of standard rooms and suites only. One of our front office managers will be reaching out to you directly for some additional information. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. -Fort Garry Hotel

Hotel's Favourite
We stayed at the Fort Garry Hotel during a road trip this past summer. We liked it so much we stayed at the Fort Garry again on the way home. The rooms were quiet and comfortable, but have so much more character than a generic modern hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful, and were happy to take us on a tour of their magnificent ballroom (as seen in several Hallmark movies). Breakfast indoors at the restaurant, and dinner outdoors at that patio were both superb. The hotel is located not that far from the "The Forks" historic district, or the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. My wife says it's her favourite Canadian hotel. I don't disagree.

Staying at the Fort Garry has been on my to-stay list for most of my life. Being that I am originally from the region, my understanding is that it has always held the highest level of prestige for hotels throughout the province of Manitoba (though it has been a while since I lived there), therefore I felt inclined to experience it for the 2 nights I was in Winnipeg before my flight home. The exterior of the building stands out against most of the downtown architecture; it is French gothic, built around 1913, and is a sharp (and intimidating) contrast to the block shaped 60's-70's era buildings across the street. One immediate area that out dates this building is the historic site of Upper Fort Garry less than 40 metres from the entrance. Other points of interest with historical significance is the Railway station (specifically for VIA rail transport) and the center of the prairie universe: the Forks! Both are a short walk away and visible from the hotel. The lobby retains an elegance from bygone days in a way that could have it mistaken as part of the Fairmont Collection. Intricate crown modling, italian furniture, marble floors, and the MB signature Tyndall stone. The Oval Brasserie restaurant is a must dine in experience - eggselent eggs benedict and fine wine selection! I highly reccomend exploring as much as you can gain entry to in this building to really appreciate it. Since I only booked for myself I stayed in the most affordable and standard room. It was quite small, but that was more or less expected being that it's an old building. It did lack a mini fridge and I found the desk a bit narrow and the shower a tight squeeze. The bed seemed to have a sink hole in the centre, but was still comfy to sleep in. There was a large closet in the room, though it seemed to allow the most noise through - the sound of sliding hangers nextdoor was as if it were infront of me. The room, bedding and towels were very clean. It had hardwood floors and the bathroom was tiled with a small window that could be opened for fresh air. The soap and shampoo products are by L'Occitane and are quite fragrant. Service was exceptional. Staff are trained to a high standard which was made evident upon check in. The staff are also knowledgeable about the history of the building. The noise through the thin walls and the awkward layout of the room were considered in this review, however both are understandably uncontrollable factors relating to maintaining historical integrity. Will definitely be staying again, but might upgrade to a suite next time (worth it)!

What a delightful place to stay! The staff is so warm and hospitable, the food is delicious and beautifully prepared, the rooms are comfortable and the overall feel is from a grander time. There are bunches of places to sit and read a book, if you want to get out of your room. Good wifi and charging stations are concessions to modern life. If you are looking for a huge room with a jacuzzi tub and monster shower - don’t expect that. But if you are looking for elegance at a modest price right near the hub of the tourist area, look no further. We were here on a group tour, so we didn’t make the choice for accommodations but we would stay here again and recommend it to friends.

Went home for a funeral and chose to stay here. Love the Bar. Love the beautiful architecture. Love the historic aspect. I heard there is a ghost. She didn't visit me....all good. Did not love listening to the man next door snorting, peeing, hacking...you get it.

My husband and I stayed one night to attend a a New Years Eve wedding held in the Crystal Ballroom. We were met by very friendly, helpful staff. The room was a double queen. The beds were very comfortable, crisp clean hotel sheets and wonderful pillows. The bathroom had very nice L’Occitaine soaps, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotions. The rain shower was wonderful. Very quiet hotel, rooms very dark and the temperature just right. Checkout was a breeze and staff again, very friendly. Would definitely stay again. I felt like a VIP in this elegant hotel.

My parents had booked two rooms for a night away with their airmiles (for my partner and I this is a big deal as we have 3 youngesters at home) we got back to the hotel late as we were at a concert, walked in and crashed. When we woke up BOTH beds were full of crumbs and ours had multiple stains on it! When I mentioned it and showed the front desk the lady just said “oh sorry we will tell house keeper”! HOW IS THAT OKAY! I am absolutely disgusted and extremely disappointed. Idc that we “paid” with air miles this was suppose to be an enjoyable get away at a higher up hotel stay. And to top it off- the concert wasn’t even enjoyable for us either.

Our daughter is studying at the University of Winnipeg and we flew there to help celebrate her birthday. She lives walking distance from the Fort Garry Hotel so we decided to try and get a room at this beautiful hotel that was formerly part of the CP hotel chain. We arrived and the hotel is truly beautiful. But there were no bellmen and we had to lug our bags up many stairs on our own. (miss) We arrived at 2 PM and our room was not ready. So we went to the Oval room for lunch, just off the lobby. Our lunch was fantastic (a hit), but a little expensive ($250 for 4 people...a miss) and by 4 pm I went back to check in and our room was still not ready. (a miss) Eventually, we got a room. We reserved a King suite. It was advertised to have a King bed in the bedroom and a Queen size sofa bed. We assumed the sofa bed would be in the living room area of the suite, allowing the guest (our other adult daughter) to have some privacy too. However, after we arrived, we discovered the sofa bed was in the bedroom, so we had to order a rollaway bed. It had one flimsy blanket with it and was not that comfortable. Our daughter did not sleep well during our stay. (a miss) The King bed, however, was one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept on (a hit) The fitness room was nice but my room key never worked. Had to get into the room other ways. The equipment was well kept but only one of each type of equipment was there and some of the pieces I have never seen before and no instructions on how to use them was present, so the many patrons who worked out in there avoided them completely. (hit and miss). On the evening of our daughters birthday we ate at a local steakhouse. I did not want to drink too much, so we came back to the hotel to have a drink in the hotel lobby restaurant (Oval Room). We arrived at 1045 PM and the hostess just looked at us, turned the 'open' sign to 'closed' right in front of us and walked away. And since room service stops at 10 PM, we were given no option for an evening nightcap before bed (without having to leave the hotel on a cold winters evening). We were flabbergasted at how poorly we were treated (big miss). Check out was fine but the Choice Hotels app did not allow me to check out remotely. I had to go to the front desk and wait for someone to help me (miss). The hotel is beautiful. The rooms are lovely and furnishings and design first rate. But the 'misses' really left me wondering about whether I should return here or try another hotel in the future.
