The good and the bad. The pool area was good (towels were available, and the water temperature was warm). The bad was when my kids and I entered the guest room, we went straight to the balcony. The door of the balcony closed behind us and locked us onto the balcony. We yelled for someone to help us for 15 minutes (while my 7-year-old cried, frantic that we were stuck there), and we realized no one was coming, so my son had to hop over the balcony, shuffle along a ledge (we were on the 3rd floor) and grab on to the staircase to go get help. Once he rescued us, I went down to the front desk, and the manager told me, "Yeah, you shouldn't have let the door close behind you; it's happened before." Half an hour later, I had three guests arrive, and I received a phone call from the front desk saying that they don't allow guests, though they would make an exception this one time. The next morning, an alarm went off at 6 am that I didn't set. At 11:05 am, we were leaving, and the housecleaner knocked on the door and rather rudely told me that I needed to leave and that check out was at 11 am, I told her, that we were on our way out and to give me 5 minutes. 4 minutes later, the front desk called, saying that check out was at 11 am and that we needed to leave. Seriously, we were stranded on our balcony! If my son hadn't gone over the balcony it would have been over an hour before someone came to the pool area that would have heard our screams. Ugh.

Dear R72930Jchrisg, I am very sorry to hear about the experience with the balcony door locking on you and we will be investigating this immediately, including if the notice on the door was present. This shouldn't have occurred. I will be reaching out to you directly as this isn't how I want your stay to be remembered. Sincerely, Chris Dubberley General Manager Viscount Gort Hotel

Hotel's Favourite
My family often has to come into Winnipeg for appointments and we have been booking at the Viscount our past few trips and will not be booking elsewhere again! We are greeted by great staff, an extremely clean building (from COVID sanitizing, to entrance floors, hotel rooms, etc.). The rooms are always clean and offer enough space for us to enjoy comfortably. The pool area (my daughter's favourite part) is fabulous. There is a hot tub, a kid's pool, and a swimming pool with a water slide that we love to spend time at. The location is great for us, with everything we need to access nearby. We also enjoy (especially in the winter months) a covered parking lot. Would highly recommend this hotel for visitors!

Do not stay if you are sensitive to cigarette smoke and want to get any sleep. We entered the hotel and there were a number of guests loitering in the lobby. I found it strange there was a number of security guards on site as we’ve stayed in the past and never had this experience. Upon entering the room the smell of smoke was terrible. The rooms used to be nice and modern and I was surprised to see the shape they are in. I called the front desk to ask if there was a mistake in our room assignment and they stated that the hotel is full of evacuees and that they come and go all hours of the day and night to smoke outside and sometimes have been found to smoke in the rooms. They gave us the option to check out with no charge which was appreciated and really all they could do for us. But would have been nice to know in advance. I won’t be staying here again but do feel for the staff having to navigate that situation.

Dear Lise, Thank you for your feed back. Our hotel, like many in the city, are experiencing an increase in guests visiting the city for numerous reasons. Our hotel is open to all guests and they are free to come and go as they please - we do not restrict any guest to have to stay in the hotel, that is not our purpose. I do apologize for any smell of smoke you may have found. We do try to make sure that our guests are following the laws and smoking away from the building. We do not have any smoking rooms nor certain areas that might draw smoke into the hotel. We have renovated the guest rooms with new window coverings. linen, flooring and new furniture is coming soon. Our staff are comfortable dealing with a full hotel - sometimes our available rooms do not meet the needs of our guests. I do hope you will give us another opportunity to provide lodging for your next stay in Winnipeg. Sincerely, Chris Dubberley General Manager Viscount Gort Hotel

We had a two day conference event take place this week at The Viscount Gort, and we are very happy with the service we received. The snacks were excellent, the staff was very helpful, courteous, and kind. They all had smiling faces and greeted everyone with respect. The cleanliness of the banquet rooms were great and very spacious. I will be recommending the Viscount Gort to all partners.

I would like to thank Guest Services for the exceptional service our athletic teams have received from the staff and management. The staff and management are friendly and accommodating to our teams needs. The hotel is very clean and safe. The walking distance to restaurants and shopping which is ideal for a group of teenage athletes. Check-in was easy, which is not always the case with a large groups. We have stayed here at least 6 times and not once have we been disappointed. I recommend any large group to book at the Viscount Gort. You will not be disappointed Thanks Again to Jodi and all the staff! Oh yes and the beds are Top Notch!

Our golf league of 100+ ladies decided for the first time ever to have a hotel, The Viscount Gort host our end of season banquet this past week. We were simply delighted with how this event turned out. For example, the spotless banquet room set up and the beautiful table settings were lovely, every dish and cup was super clean, and the good quality and variety of the different meals we selected including options for food allergies, etc. exceeded our expectations. As well, the top notch serving staff with Janna and her team who worked quickly to get out the hot meals was appreciated. Mike the bartender provided quick friendly service despite some initial lengthy lineups. Even the front desk staff promptly made extra photocopies for us of membership forms we requested. This attention to detail and accommodating our needs all made for a very enjoyable banquet. This hotel staff is terrific and banquet manager, Anne made sure everything went smoothly. It was a wonderful experience for us.

All I'm going to say is "gross". Due to few hotel rooms available in Winnipeg last week Tuesday night , this hotel was taking advantage of price gouging . No breakfast , no shuttle to airport . Hotel was full of families that were bussed in due to fires up north . Kids running around everywhere and a few drunks as well. Everything in the room you touched was greasy

Responded Jul. 29, 2022
Hi jennyjenny6969, Just wanted to take a minute to respond to your review of the hotel. I am sorry that you feel the hotel was "price gouging" as our rates were lower than a majority of the hotels in our area of the city. We do have breakfast available daily from 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM. Low price of $4.99 or complimentary for guests booking direct with the hotel. The airport shuttle is currently not available as stated on our website. We can provide Uber service or Taxi from the hotel. You are correct, our hotel, as well as numerous other hotels in the city, have families that have been brought in due to forest fires that have threatened their community, destroyed Hydro poles and displaced hundreds of people. This includes other guests who have been with us for months due to their community being flooded and their homes filled with flood waters, or destroyed completely. I am sorry that the children inconvenienced you on your stay. I personally have been at the hotel daily for the past 3 months and have not seen children running around everywhere as most of the kids we have on site are infants. The others are older and we hardly see them at all. We are a full service hotel that has a lounge - perhaps the guests you are describing as "drunks" might just be guests enjoying the lounge. Or perhaps you are saying the kids were the drunks? It is hard to tell from your review. As for the comment about the room we thoroughly sanitize all surfaces in the room so I am 100% confident that it was not, as you described, "greasy". The hotel takes its sanitizing very seriously in all areas, especially the guest rooms. If you were located on the pool facing side of the hotel it can be a bit more humid than other rooms. Had you mentioned to the front desk that you did not care for staying in a hotel that have children and victims of natural disasters staying as well, they would have been more than happy to suggest and alternative hotel and cancelled your reservation. My husband and I and two friends booked at the hotel for Feb 14-16. I booked online, they booked through the hotel. We decided to come in a day early and we shared a room. When we got there we realized our friends had booked the deluxe room and we had the premium room and we were paying the same price. We asked at the front desk if my friends could be upgraded and pay the same price as us. The lady at the desk was very rude and said they couldn’t because they didn’t book online. I asked if we could cancel the reservation and rebook and she said sure but we’re charging for the deluxe room too. So they decided to pay the upgrade fee of $30 extra per night. When I went to check in to my room later that day the same lady in a VERY loud voice said “I don’t know who the pot smokers are but we had to shut down the room for tonight to air it out. You could be charged for that” First off we did NOT smoke in the room. We went outside and came back in. If our clothes had an odour on it, it wouldn’t have been enough to have to shut down the room. Second, there was other people in the lobby when she yelled this at us which I found extremely unprofessional. Marijuana is legal. We did not smoke in the room. There would be no difference then lingering cigarette smell on clothes or stale beer cans sitting on the dresser. The hotel also clears there parking lot of snow with a loader at 3am. It is EXTREMELY loud and the back up beepers keep you awake until they are finished. This happened 2 out of the 3 night we were there. The beds do not have bed covers, my top cover had stains all over it, and breakfast service was terrible. The hot tub also does not work properly. The jets do not work at all and it’s feels more like a bath water then a hot tub. I gave them 1 star on the review because I was unable to give zero. We’ve stayed here lots and we’ve never had an experience like this one. I am extremely disappointed and more than likely will not book here again.

Responded Feb. 18, 2022
Dear Pam935, I am sorry that you felt it was required to post a negative review without letting me respond to your direct email. As I mentioned in my response to your initial email I have looked into your claims made in your review. I am sorry if you felt that you did not receive the same rate as your friends. I would like to explain what was done on our end. You arrived a day early and spent the night with your friends and were not charged the additional guest fees that normally would be charged with more than 2 adults in a room. Therefore received a first day savings of $20. One reservation was made well before the other at an advance booking rate. There was no upgrade fee for changing rooms - the same rate was honored for the deluxe room to a premium. The front desk person who you claim yelled at you was informed by our housekeeping supervisor, guests on the floor as well as myself who came out of my office trying to figure out were the overwhelming smell of Marijuana was coming from. This included checking the stairwell, and the first floor to see if there was someone smoking in the hotel. the smell that came in with you was significant. You mention the legality of marijuana and while it is legal, it is not legal to smoke it outside of your own residence, just like you can't walk around drinking a beer outside, you are certainly not allowed to spark a joint in the lobby of a hotel while walking outside as observed by our staff. This is a non smoking hotel. When you smoke weed outside in our covered parking lot or other areas of the hotel it get pulled in by our fresh air vents and is then circulated through the lobby and other areas of the hotel, including guest rooms that draw air from the outside. If you compare the smell of a tightly sealed container of marijuana and an open beer can there is minimal smell. If you pour the beer all over your clothes and lie down on fresh washed sheets and pillows the smell will be ingrained into the linen and mattress. Our parking lot snow removal company does and exceptional job of clearing our lot so that we have an accessible parking area for our guests. Sometimes when nature dumps 10 cm of snow there is no alternative but to clear it overnight as that is when there are the least amount of cars on the roads and in our lot. Unfortunately the city is also clearing the main roads at that time as well as are the numerous business around the hotel including apartment buildings in the area. I wish snow removal was not necessary but access to our parking lot is important. Our beds are made up with a top sheet over a duvet as well as two more sheets underneath. If there were issues with the cleanliness of the linen we would have been happy to move you rooms or remake the bed. I am sorry that you found the service in the dining room not to your liking - we did try to find a receipt from your breakfast but were unable to. Our staff working in the dining room have a combined 60 years of experience at the hotel and I have yet to find someone who has not complimented them on their service. I made it a point to check on the hot tub. While it does not have the same kind of jets as a backyard hot tub the jets were functioning fine when turning the dial on the wall. The temperature was 104 which is the max our hot tub can be set. Perhaps there was an issue that I am unaware of that day but my maintenance person said all was working fine when they did their tests throughout their shift. You claim to have stayed her lots but our profile has you stay one other time and your guest making a reservation and canceling. I was hoping to look back and see the positive reviews from the other times you stayed with us but I was unable to. Perhaps your other stays were under another name? I am sorry that you felt that you were treated improperly, but we try to welcome everyone into the hotel like we are welcoming them into our home. When our other guests are impacted by someone or something we try to fix the problem directly with that individual, which was the intent of our front desk person discretely trying to make you aware of the situation and other guests complaints as well as what our housekeeping staff had noticed. I appreciate time taken to post a review, good or bad, and I am sorry we couldn't have dealt with the issue out of social media. Sincerely, Chris Dubberley General Manager Viscount Gort Hotel
