My wife and I visited the Earle of Leinster B&B in the middle of our two-week vacation in the Canadian Maritime provinces. We had found this place online, and it look cozy and "home-like," so we went with it. From the very moment we arrived, Dwight & Carol (the proprietors) made us feel incredibly at home. Dwight has a smile that never seems to leave his face, and they both try their best to make you feel very much at home. Our room, which was on the second floor, was in the front of the house, and was incredibly comfortable. It was decorated entirely in Victorian style, with all kinds of attractive decorations and furniture throughout. Dwight seemed to know where everything in the house had come from, much like a historian in a country museum. We were further treated to a WONDERFUL breakfast on each of our four mornings in St John, with plates laden with bacon, eggs, waffles, homemade jams, and lots more. And they always seemed to make sure that everyone in the kitchen was comfortable with one another, which made for great conversation. They even had a billiard table in the cellar. Dwight had warned us that the parking on the street could be a little bit tricky, but it was never an issue. They also kept us updated on all kinds of places to visit around the local area. In summary, WE LOVED this place, and truly enjoyed the help and friendship of the owners. I would recommend this to anyone, for a comfortable and affordable stay in St. John.

Unfortunately, our stay at this lovely bed and breakfast was only one night, but it was a fantastic night and morning. The owners called me prior to our arrival to ensure I had instructions for parking and how to get into the room and main space, as well as to get preferences for breakfast the next morning. We did arrive after they had left for the evening, but we were able to check into our room with ease.

The Inn is an old Victorian house near downtown Saint John. It features a number of rooms within the house, a couple rooms with private entrances attached to the back, as well as a carriage house that has a few additional rooms. It also has a lovely courtyard/garden with tables for chilling outside, which we did!

We stayed in the Shamrock Room, which was decorated in an old farmhouse style. The room featured a sink in the room and a small bathroom with stand up shower stall and toilet. It also had a small kitchenette with a fridge, microwave, and coffee maker, all of which was unexpected. There was a counter with stools for eating in the room. The bed was comfortable and soft, though the room got a little warm as there is no air conditioning. Thankfully, the air outside was cool and the neighborhood quiet. So we left a window open.

The breakfast the next morning was phenomenal, and the owners were very friendly and fun to speak with about the town and our travels. They were very knowledgeable about the area.

The only downside is that they only take cash or e-transfer (Canadian banks only). So I had to walk a few blocks to go to an ATM, which was not an issue. I'm pretty sure they told me it was that way when I booked, but that was several months prior to our stay. So I likely forgot (or assumed e-transfer meant Venmo or PayPal, as I am not Canadian).

I would certainly stay here again if I find myself in Saint John. It was a perfectly lovely night in a cute little city.

We arrived after hours without a place to stay not the wisest move but it ended up being a wonderful 3 days. We Called the Earle of Leinster Inn Style bed and breakfast, spoke to a wonderful man who met us at the Inn and showed us the last room available-it was wonderful.A century home with period style furnishings and eclectic Knick knacks making it warm and inviting. Also has a pool table in basement that was fun
Dwight and Cheryl were wonderful and full of great tips for making our visit to St John amazing.
The inn is close many tasty pubs and restaurants we parked our car and didn’t use it again until we were ready to leave
Cheryl made us a delicious stuffed french toast with berries and whip cream, side of bacon and good coffee.
We would highly recommend this Inn for anyone visiting St John and we will definitely be back. Thank you again Cheryl for all your visiting/travel tips.

On arrival we were offered a bigger room, which was much brighter than the one we'd booked. The room had everything we needed.
The shower was a squeeze but we knew that in advance.
It was slightly weird to have the sink in the bedroom rather than in the bathroom. Useful to have a separate kitchenette.
There was a large communal outdoor area for late night music, a glass of wine and a cigar.
Easy to park close by and to walk into town.
Breakfast of waffles and fruit was a delight, where the owners joined us and told delightful stories.

We enjoyed our two night stay. Our room was quiet, clean, interesting and relaxing. Parking wasn’t an issue, and the location was perfect for a stroll to Market Square. Cheryl makes a great breakfast- stuffed French toast, waffles with delicious whipped cream! Having a kitchen available to us was appreciated, too. We felt right at home.

We stayed here for almost two weeks and it felt like home. Everyday there was an amazing home cooked breakfast ready for us. It’s right in the heart of Saint John so there is a lot to do right nearby. The room was exactly what we needed for the trip and was very clean. We would recommend this to anyone. 5 stars all the way.

My wife and I stayed at the Earl of Leinster for 8 days. Innkeepers Cheryl and Dwight are just the loveliest couple. They made us feel like home away from home. The room was just as promised, very clean and well organized.
Breakfasts was wonderful.

Stayed one night in the East Apartment, which is on the third floor at the front of the house. The place was spacious and had good wifi. Included a full kitchen which we didn't use other than to keep our food cold overnight. The house is well located in the middle of Saint John, we were able to walk around quite a bit and see the city. Breakfast was good in the morning, though having more health-oriented options would have been nice.

We loved staying in this wonderful old home, fully restored and furnished to the period. The accomodation was pristinely clean and our host was delightful. Breakfast was large and delicious. The property was well located and we walked to Main Street restaurants and bars and of course the shops. Book early in season.

We had booked two nights here during our vacation through New Brunswick. We had looked at the B&B on Google Maps Street View, so we knew what the buildings of ''Historic Uptown'' looked like. In reality, the neighbourhood looks a bit run down, but several areas of St John have the same appearance. The B&B was built in 1878, a three storey brick house with a couple of extensions and out buildings. There are 12 rooms in total. All have names or themes, and are decorated accordingly. The owner showed us several of the rooms although we had already selected the ''Emerald”, which has a pine, country cottage theme. None of the other rooms appealed to us at all. The overall state of repair is not good, many features really need work, updating, or replacement.

The owners do not live in the B&B, so when we arrived we had to phone to let them know we were waiting to check in. Although we had booked our stay six months earlier, the room we had selected was double booked. As we were the first to arrive, we got the room of our choice. The owners, Cheryl and Dwight, are very anxious to please, and very enthusiastic about their B&B., but seem very disorganized. Apart from the confusion over double booking, our breakfast time was wrong, and breakfast preferences were confused. When we were sitting in our room in the afternoon, the owner came into the room to show it to some new visitors, with a comment ''Oh, I didn't know someone was in here''.

The owners have been operating this business for four years, but are making what can only be described as rookie mistakes due to a lack of organization. I would hesitate to recommend this B&B.

Response from dwight800, Owner at Earle of Leinster
Responded Jul 21, 2016
Even though this is our 4th year, we still feel very fresh at what we are doing and regrettably do make mistakes and can seem to be very disorganized. However, as the guest mentioned, our guests are very important to us and we do our best to make their stay as comfortable and pleasant as possible; and we always hope that is what our guests appreciate. We have several different types of rooms - from Victorian, to cottage, to wilderness to a large, beautiful apartment, and we were sorry most of them did not appeal to our guest as we think our range of choices can appeal to many different personalities. We are very close to our beautiful uptown Saint John which is unique in that there are some homes that are upkept and well taken care of and there are others that don't look quite appealing. Some reasons for this is poor economy but also our harsh winters are hard on exterior paint and while some homes may look run down on the outside, inside they are quite lovely. Our building is old and is getting some loving tender care it greatly needs as we are addressing as many of the issues as we can. This past year we have done extensive repairs to much of the building - both interior and now exterior - but unfortunately much of what we have done is not noticeable to guests - such as brick work, roofs, etc.. We are happy to say that already it is much better than what it was. We do not live on sight as we bought a house in Saint John 10 years ago and the B&B 4 years ago and see no reason to move as we love both buildings and we are only 5 minutes away and if we are not called ahead, you may have to wait 5-10 minutes - which may happen even if we lived on site. We are delighted that the majority of our guests enjoy their stay with us and we are only sorry this guest was not one of them.

What is parking situation, and which rooms are on 3rd floor? thanks

I cannot answer your question about the hotel as we stayed in the cottage located at the back of the property. There is a driveway alongside the hotel, but it is really a load and unload. You can park there at night as it accommodates 2 -3 cars. You will need to be available to move anyone you parked in if they are leaving in the AM. We parked on the street. No meters but you might have to circle the wagons to find a spot. We did not have any problems finding spots and the car was safe. Hope this helps and have a great time.
